Carl Van Bailey

Carl Van Bailey of Shawnee died Thursday at a McLoud nursing home. He was 85.

He was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Stuart to Van Austin Bailey and Hildra (Marshall) Bailey.

He attended Stuart Public Schools. Bailey was a retired painting contractor, a profession he served for more than 60 years.

He was married in McAlester on Nov. 23, 1935, to Lula Wilson.

He was a member of Blackburn Chapel of Shawnee, where he also served as a deacon. Bailey was also a member of the International Painters Union and the local painters union.

He had lived in the Shawnee area since 1980. Prior to that he had lived in Tulsa for about 30 years.

Survivors include wife, Lula Bailey, of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Evelyn Wood, Midwest City; Joan and Carl Carlile, Bethel; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Dolores Bailey, Oxnard, Calif.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, one brother, Frank Bailey, McAlester; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Eileen and Howard Daniels, Stuart; Eva and Guy Chapman, Ponca City; aunt, Pansy Carano, McAlester.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Sparks officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 4411 Highline Blvd., Oklahoma City, Okla.

Carolyn J. Nowlin

Carolyn J. Nowlin of Shawnee died Friday at an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 64.

She was born Feb. 23, 1936, in Scotia, Calif., to Jack Cannon and Thelma (Hixson) Cannon.

She was a graduate of Shawnee High School. Mrs. Nowlin worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City for 23 years.

She married Jack Nowlin on April 20, 1957.

Nowlin was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee. She lived in Shawnee most of her life.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Nowlin, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Cindy Nowlin, Shawnee; one grandson, Blake Nowlin, Shawnee; two sisters, Betty Black, Shawnee; Karla Cannon, Prague; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Martha Cannon, Shawnee; three nieces and husbands, Nancy and Don Casper; Cheryl Benton; Kathy and Bill Arnaud; two nephews, Jeff Rosamond and Jack Cannon.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Scott Nowlin.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Memorial Park, Trinity Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home Chapel.

Raymond Kendall Hayes

Raymond Kendall Hayes of Bloomfield, N.M., died Thursday. He was 60.

Hayes was born June 16, 1939, in Oklahoma to Perry and Edna Hayes. He had lived in Bloomfield since 1958 and was retired from the El Paso Natural Gas Co. where he was a plant operator.

Survivors include his two sons, Thomas R. Hayes and wife Cindy, Moses Lake, Wash.; Perry A. Hayes, Farmington, N.M.; daughter and son-in-law, Yevette R. and John Snyder, Bloomfield; brother and sister-in-law, David and Eunice Hayes, Maud; sister and brother-in-law, Floretta and Kenneth Wallgren, Tecumseh; and six grandchildren, Christopher Ivey, Jamille Ivey, Cameron Ivey, Chelsea Hayes, Seth Hayes and Colton Hayes.

Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Chapel, Farmington, N.M.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Chapel with Pastor Tom Dierdorf officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cummings Cemetery, Maud.

Marie E. Bryson

Marie E. Bryson of Shawnee died Saturday at a local nursing home. She was 92.

She was born Nov. 14, 1907, in Monroe. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Bridges.

She married Wade W. Bryson on Nov. 20, 1924, in Poteau. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1981.

Survivors include four sons, Glenn Bryson, McAllen, Texas; James Bryson and Ken Bryson, both of Norman; Blaine Bryson, Shawnee; one daughter, Joyce Haney, Dayton, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; brother, Clyde Bridges, Fort Smith, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Bernice Montgomery; grandson, Stanley Bryson; one brother and one sister.

The casket will be open until 1 p.m. Monday and will not be opened at the service. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Maxine Jane Waters

Davenport resident Maxine Jane Waters died Friday at her home. She was 80.

Mrs. Waters was born April 15, 1919, in Bell Plain, Kan., to James Pat and Olive Blanche (Robbins) Gunn. She married E.E. "Sam" Waters in Davenport on Aug. 24, 1946.

She taught school in the Davenport School System for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Davenport, Retired Teachers of Lincoln County, Davenport School Foundation and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Survivors include her husband, E.E. "Sam" Waters, of the home; son, James A. Waters, Ada; daughter, Jill Ann Waters, Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one uncle.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Davenport with the Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at the Davenport Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler.

Memorials may be made to the Davenport School Foundation or the First Baptist Church of Davenport or the South Side Hospice of Oklahoma City.

Adella Harris

Adella Harris of Shawnee died Friday. She was 83.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel of Shawnee.

Cliff Tinkle

Cliff Tinkle of Seminole died Sunday at a Seminole nursing home. He was 99.

He was born Oct. 22, 1900.

Tinkle married Esther S. Tinkle. She preceded him in death on June 28, 1984.

He was a longtime math instructor at Seminole High School.

Survivors include one nephew, Gordon Tinkle of Fort Smith, Ark.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Kelvin Moesley officiating, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Janis Elaine Cowan

Janis "Jo" Elaine Cowan of Cement died Thursday. She was 56.

She was born May 6, 1943, in Richmond, Calif. As a child, she moved to Shawnee, where she graduated from high school.

She married Dennis Cowan on March 3, 1963, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mrs. Cowan worked at Cement school as a secretary from 1969 until her retirement in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Juanita Glaze; and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Cowan of the home; one daughter, Carol Estes, Cement; one son, Terry Cowan, Chickasha; a sister, Toni Salsbury, Shawnee; brother, Walter Girty, Shawnee; and three grandchildren, Craig, Deven and Shelby Estes.

Funeral services were Saturday in the Cement High School Auditorium with Ralph Beatty, minister of Cyril Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in Cement Cemetery under the direction of Robbins Funeral Home, Fletcher.

Pearl Guinn

Shawnee resident Pearl Guinn died Saturday in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 88.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Central Church of Christ, 10th and Bell, with Dwyane Dennis officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.
