Lessie Ferguson
Lessie Ferguson, 94, died Monday in a local nursing home.
She was born July 8, 1905 to James Elbert Walker and Nancy Lucinda (Brammer) Walker in Woolwine, Va. She attended school at Woolwine and Davie High School in Davie, W.Va.
She was a nurse for Bluefield Sanitarium in Bluefield, W.Va., for 18 years. She worked in Mullens, W.Va., in ladies ready-to-wear for 18 years and Shawnee Care Center as activities director from 1969-1971.
In 1931, she married Walter Ferguson. She was the activity director for the Oklahoma State Nursing Home Association for eight years and was a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church.
She and her husband owned a grocery store and she taught art two nights a week in both West Virginia and Oklahoma. She moved to Shawnee in 1965.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son James Wilburn Walker, daughter Connie Walker, stepson Walter Ferguson, brother Herman Walker and sisters Lorne Walker Mildred Mills.
Survivors include stepson William R. Ferguson of Roanoke, W.Va., one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Juanita Walker of Shawnee, two sisters, Edith Thompson of Harrodsburg, Ky., and Geneva Belle Brewster of Twin Branch, W. Va., three grandchildren, Carolyn Romberg of Shawnee, James Michael Walker of Shawnee and Sandra East of Mustang, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Reed Lynn officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Memorial Park.
Dorothy L. Harden
Dorothy L. Harden died Monday in Prague. She was 76 years old.
She was born on June 11, 1924, to Zack and Alice (Riggs) Fennel. She resided in Prague and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Prague.
She married Melvin L. "Buster" Harden on July 5, 1941, in Shawnee and moved to California in 1951. She worked with the El-Real Bakery for more than 20 years and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Santa Clara, Calif.
In 1993, after the death of her husband, she moved back to Prague.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one grandson, four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law David and Debbie Harden of Prague, Melvin L. "Butch" Harden, Calif., Robert and Chris Harden of Watertown, Mass., three sisters, Doris and Bill Smith of Prague, Mary and Bill Bigham of Edmond and Bobbie and Don Gaston of Chilton, Texas, one brother, Zack Fennel of Shawnee, one granddaughter, five grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Prague with Tim Emmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Prague cemeteryunder the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Prague.
Ruby Mae Smith
Ruby Mae Smith died Monday in a local hospital. She was 54.
She was born Jan. 26, 1947, to Willie Bryan and Goldie Mae (Freeman) Belcher.
She graduated from Shawnee High School, then went on to work as an administrative assistant at Golden Rule Nursing Home. She was a certified dietary manager.
She married Derrill G. Smith Oct. 16, 1964, in Shawnee and was a member of the Gordon Cooper Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, father-in- law and mother-in-law Charles R. Smith and Betty J. Smith, and grandson Dylan Stacy.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Derrill Smith Jr. and Ramona Smith, Tim and Stacey Smith and DeWayne Gentry, all of Shawnee, two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Tony Foreman of Newalla and Lori and Chad Stacy of Shawnee, eight grandchildren, Trey Smith, Sami Smith, Toby Smith, Kalob Foreman, Kyle Foreman, Jake Smith, Scott Towne and Kara Towne, two great-grandchildren, one brother and sister-in-law Richard and Karen Belcher of Meeker, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Eula and Curtis Edwards of Georgia and Rada and Robert Hull of Shawnee, a twin brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merrill and Bula Smith of Shawnee, two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law David Smith and Chuck and Kathy Smith, all of Shawnee, three sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anna and Charles Jantz of Bristow, Terri and John Madden of Bristow and Betty and James Nicholson of Shawnee and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel. Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Northridge Church of Christ with Michael Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Johnson Cemetery.
Leonard Peterman
Leonard "Wayne" Peterman of McLoud died Monday. He was 56.
He was born Dec. 1, 1943, to Leonard and Dorothy (Whittet) Peterman.
He was married to Mary Totty on Nov. 12, 1963, in Shawnee.
Peterman served in the Army National Guard and was retired from Fred Jones/Autocraft after working 30 years.
Surviving are his wife, Mary of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and wife Renea of McLoud; Mark and wife Lisa of McLoud; Vernon and wife T. of Holdenville; five grandchildren, Kayla, Kyle, Chelsee, Sage, Vernon, and other family members.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Asa Smith Funeral Chapel in Harrah. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in McLoud.
Claudie Lyn Chandler
Claudie Lyn Chandler of Seminole died Wednesday at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was 78.
He was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Seminole County. He was the son of Lyn Kurtis "Kurt" and Mildred "Millie" (Edney) Chandler.
He worked at in supply and logistics at Tinker Air Force Base and retired in 1980 after 31 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of Seminole.
Chandler married Tessie Lorene (Drewry) Chandler Sept. 21, 1947. He was veteran in the Army and served in World War II in Europe.
He was a member of the Harvey Road Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion of Seminole. Chandler was active for many years with the Seminole Round-Up Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three infant brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Chandler of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Lyn and Patricia Kay Chandler of Holdenville; daughter, Marifloy Seifried of Seminole; grandchildren, Jamie Lynn Files and Steven Douglas Files of Seminole; Christi Day Lynaugh of Joplin, Mo.; Vernon Scott of Tucson, Ariz.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harvey Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Hightower and the Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Heritage House Site Council and the Harvey Road Baptist Building Fund.
Betty Cartwright
Betty Cartwright of Shawnee died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 78.
She was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Dallas, Texas. She was the daughter of Bennett Emerson and Georgia (Greer) Emerson.
She spent her late teen-age years in the Narrows, Brooklyn, N.Y., attending a business college and working in Manhattan.
She retired in 1985 from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, where she worked for 14 years in a number of positions, including assistant director of cooperative education, grants writing, the NASA program and as a consultant to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma under the leadership of Chief David Gardner.
She was formerly married to Ed Cartwright of Arkansas City, Kan. In the late 1960s, she was employed by COEDD in Shawnee, involved in the criminal justice programs, including the early programs offering training to police officers in an eight-county area of central Oklahoma.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Morrow Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Shawnee.
She was preceded in death by her friend, Carl Winchester, who died in 1998; her parents, Bennett I. and Georgia Greer Emerson; two brothers, Bennett Emerson II and Kenneth Emerson; a grandson, Jeremy.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Ben Cartwright and Jan Cartwright of Lexington Park, Md.; G. Michael Cartwright and Rose Cartwright, Arkansas City, Kan.; Thomas Lee Cartwright and Kris Cartwright; daughter-in-law, Penney Cartwright, Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Andrew Cartwright of Lexington Park, Md.; Amy Cartwright of Lexington Park, Md.; Christopher Cartwright and Matthew Cartwright of Arkansas City, Kan.; Joshua Lee of Oklahoma City; Shelbie and Zackary Cartwright, Shawnee; great-granddaughter, Kathryn "Katey" O'Hara, Wichita, Kan.; friend, Kandy Robbins and family.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Max Shumake officiating. Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
The family has designated the United Presbyterian Church Building Fund as appropriate for memorials.
Kirk Duncan
Kirk Duncan of Shawnee died Wednesday in Shawnee. He was 95.
He was born May 18, 1905, in Muskogee and was reared in Oil Center.
From 1942 until 1974, he lived in Shawnee. In 1975, he returned to Oil Center.
He had moved back to Shawnee a few weeks ago. On Jan. 18, 1927, he married Minnie Burk in Ada.
He and his wife owned and operated Duncan's Station and Grocery Store in Oil Center for many years. He had also worked at Tinker Air Force Base until his retirement.
He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Oil Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers five sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Duncan of Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Ruby Mae and Roy Curtis of Shawnee; granddaughters and spouses, Diana and Wayne Knight of Shawnee; Jana and Rusty England of Duncan; grandson and spouse, Burky and Terri Curtis of Shawnee; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pentecostal Holiness Church, Oil Center, with the Rev. Glen Eaves officiating. Burial will be at Maxwell Cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home. The family has designated the Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund in Oil Center as appropriate for memorials.
