John L. Bumgarner, 80, of
Norman, Oklahoma, died Monday, January
20, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Funeral
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M.,
Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at McFarlin
Memorial United Methodist Church in
Norman, Oklahoma with Reverend Cal
Brannon officiating. Interment will follow
at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Norman,
Oklahoma. Services are under the
direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of
Norman, Oklahoma
Mr. Bumgarner was born January 29, 1922 in Norman,
Oklahoma, to John Lee and Leona Stogner Bumgarner. He grew up
in Norman and graduated from Norman High School. He graduated
from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors in History, later
receiving a Masters in Education Administration also from the
University of Oklahoma. Mr. Bumgarner married Sadie Margaret
Covington on February 15, 1946. During World War II, he served
with the United States Army Air Force. He started teaching at
Pleasant Grove Schools near Seminole, Oklahoma for one year and
returned to Norman. Mr. Bumgarner served for a number of years as
principal at McKinley Elementary and was principal for twelve years
at West Jr. High. He then returned to McKinley and served as
principal until his retirement in May 1982. He was a charter member
of the Norman Sooner Lions. He was also a member of the
Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education
Association. Mr. Bumgarner was a member of McFarlin Memorial
United Methodist Church in Norman, serving as the Chairman of the
Board of Directors of the Kindergarten at McFarlin. Mr. Bumgarner
loved playing golf and was an avid O.U. fan.
Mr. Bumgarner was preceded in death by his parents, and two
sisters, Betty Lou Chase and Helen Kammerlocher. Survivors
include his wife, Sadie of the home; two daughters, Mary June Joseph
and husband, Joe of Satellite Beach, FL and Linda Lippe and
husband, Dennis of Austin, TX; one sister, Mary Ann Jahnke and
husband, H.R. of Henderson, Nevada; two brothers, Robert
Bumgarner and wife, Sharon of Phoenix, AZ and Phillip Bumgarner
and wife, Cathey of Bradenton, FL; and four grandsons, Joseph
Joseph III, Aaron John Lippe, Tyler Joseph Lippe and Calvin James
Lippe.
The family has designated the music program at McFarlin
Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd,
Norman, Oklahoma 73069 as appropriate for expressions of
sympathy.

James John Doherty
James John Doherty, 65, of Norman, Oklahoma, died
Thursday, January 2, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Visitation will be
from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, January 6, 2003 at
Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. Memorial Services will be
held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic
Church Parish Center Chapel in Norman with Deacon Jeff Willard
officiating. Graveside service will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the Ft. Sill
National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Ed Perry, Dennis McNally, Phil McNally, Glen
Wanzer, Leon Crowley and Chris Doherty. Honorary Bearers will be
the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Services are under the direction of
Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
Mr. Doherty was born August 1, 1937, in Hermosa Beach,
California, to Robert E. and Margaret McGlynn Doherty. Jim
graduated from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California.
He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from
Loyola University in Los Angeles, California. He was a veteran of
the United States Air Force, serving his country for twenty-one years.
Jim served one tour in Vietnam flying reconnaissance missions in the
RF-4C.
Mr. Doherty was preceded in death by his parents and one
brother, Robert E. Doherty, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Patricia of
the home; two sons, Brian of Norman, OK and Patrick of Houston,
TX; and a sister, Michelle O’Brien and husband, Hugh, of Torrance,
CA.

Darryl Wayne Elms
Darryl Wayne Elms, 42, died Thursday, Jan. 9 in Norman. Services will be held Monday, January 13 at 2 p.m. at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman with the Rev. Cal Brannon officiating.
Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Norman. Havenbrook Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mr. Elms was born Jan. 26, 1960, in Norman, to Don and Shirley (Moody) Elms. He was a lifelong Norman resident and attended Norman Public Schools. Mr. Elms was an auto mechanic by trade and worked for Brown's Garage for many years. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Elms was preceded in death by his father, Don Elms.
Mr. Elms is survived by his mother, Shirley Elms; brother, Terry Elms and his wife Donette of Norman; sisters, Tina Day and her husband Bruce of Nichols Hills, Autumn Brown and her husband Kendall of Edmond; maternal grandmother, Mae Paul of Purcell; four nieces, one nephew, and many other family members.
Bearers will be Larry Terry, Rick Logan, Russell Logan, Merrl Shingler, John Sager, and Les Sager.

Roberson, Carl Benge, died at the age of 73 on February 5, 2002, in the Continuous Care Center in Tulsa, Ok. Graveside services for Mr. Roberson were held Friday, February 8, 2002 in Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery. Interment was under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service of Nowata, Ok. Military Honors were accorded Mr. Roberson by the District 5 Rifle Squad. He is survived by his wife, Emma Jane, as well as by four sons, one daughter, three step-sons, two brothers, twenty-two grandchildren and by twenty two great-grandchildren.

Baker, Mildred G. Baker, age 91, passed away February 10, 2002. Services were held Tuesday in the Sneed Chapel of the First United Methodist Church under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home.

Burgess, Maggie Etta, a homemaker, died at the age of 82 on February 7, 2002. Services were held at the Adams Boulevard Church on February 11, 2002 under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home.

Franklin, James Dade, died at the age of 83 on February 5, 2002 at Avondale Cottage. Service for Mr. Franklin were held February 7, 2002 at the First Baptist Church with final committal rites in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Cushing, Ok. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker-Brown Funeral Home. Mr. Franklin is survived by four sons, two daughters, one sister, three brothers, sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Love, George A., age 64, retired Bartlesville School Teacher, died February 1, 2002. Services for Mr. Love were held at the Eastern Heights Baptist Church in Bartlesville on February 6, 2002. Arrangements were under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home of Bartlesville.

Meadors, Susan Lucille, 49, Administrative Assistant for the Phillips Petroleum Company, died February 4, 2002. Service for Ms. Meadors were held Saturday in the Dewey Church of Christ, under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home.

Mikel, Mary K., 89, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002. Private memorial services to be held at a later date with Stumpff Funeral Home.

Pennington, Lucille W., wife of Edward N. Pennington, died February 7, 2002 in the Jane Phillips Medical Center. Funeral services were held on February 11, 2002, in the Colonial Chapel of the Neekamp Funeral Home with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Pennington’s is survived by her husband of sixty years, two sons, a daughter, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Sayles, Harvey, 56, former cook, died Monday, February 4, 2002. Services for Mr. Sayles were held Sunday, February 10, 2002 at the Westside First Baptist Church in Dewey under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home.

Shiver, Amos J., age 85, retired civil engineer, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2002. Services were under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel and were held on February 7, 2002 at the Westside First Baptist Church in Dewey.

Toups, Edward C., Jr., age 76, died February 5, 2002 in the Jane Phillips Medical Center Following an extended illness. The funeral mass for Mr. Toups was held Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church. A private interment was held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Toups is survived by his wife, Lois Kathryn Toups, as well as two daughters and two granddaughters. Arrangements for Mr. Toups were under the direction of Neekamp Funeral Home.

Collins, Dorothy Mae, 77-year-old Nowata resident, passed away February 5, 2002 at the Jane Phillips Nowata Health Center. Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband, B. Joe Collins, one son and cherished friends. Graveside funeral services were held February 8, 2002 at Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Benjamin Funeral Service, Nowata.

Gray, Ree, passed away at the age of 87 on February 4, 2002, in Tulsa, Ok. Funeral services for Mr. Gray were held February 8, 2002, in the New Life Assembly of God Church. He is survived by his wife of more than 63 years, Ella, as well as by three sons, three sisters, thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Lane, Velma Viola, age 91, died February 7, 2002 in the Osage Nursing Home at Nowata. Funeral services were held February 11, 2002 in the Church of the Nazarene at Nowata with interment in Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service. Mrs. Lane is survived by one son, two daughters, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Lane in January of 1990.

Strain, Donald Joseph, died at the age of 88 on February 7, 2002 in the Osage Nursing Home at Nowata. Memorial services for Mr. Strain were held February 11 in Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service of Nowata. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda, in May, 2002. Mr. Strain is survived by his daughter, one brother, one sister and by other relatives and friends.

Swan, William James, Sr., died at the age of 59 on February 4, 2002. Services for Mr. Swan were held on Friday, February 8, 2002 in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel in Bartlesville, Ok.
