Edwin Brice Wright

Tahlequah resident Edwin Brice Wright died Sunday in a Tulsa hospital. He was 75.

Wright was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Dillard, Okla., the son of Willie and Doris (Brayboy) Wright.

He married Gaytha Burns on Jan. 9, 1943, in Tecumseh.

Wright worked as the superintendent of material for Oasis Oil Company in Tripoli, Libya. He was a rancher for more than 28 years.

He served with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant.

Wright was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Tahlequah.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Darryl E. and Judy Wright, Lindsay, and Rob Carr, of the home; three daughters, Connie Wright, Michelle Wright and Becky Wright, all of the home; three brothers, Willie Wright and Leniol Wright, both of Seminole, and Herman Wright, Midland, Texas; two sisters, Faye Seibel, North Carolina, and Lois Everhart, Henryetta, Texas; and three grandchildren, Casey and Courtney Wright and Katelyn Carr.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Little Cemetery in Seminole, with the Rev. Arlis Moon officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Dorothy (Souders) Downing

Dorothy (Souders) Downing, Redding, Calif., died Sunday, Aug. 27, in Redding, Calif. She was 78.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1921, in Shawnee to Velva and John Souders in Shawnee. She grew up in the Johnson area, graduated in 1941 from Earlsboro High School and later married Don Downing.

Mrs. Downing was a homemaker and retail clerk for JCPennney. She was a member of the Community Church of God in Redding, Calif. In 1947, she moved to Shasta County, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Ron and Paulette Downing of Redding, Calif., and Doug and Monu Downing of Shingletown, Calif., five granddaughters, one grandson and three great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Wanda Souders of Shawnee, six sisters and brothers-in-law, Jewel and Barnard McDonnell of Shawnee, Mildred and Gordon Longest of Shawnee, Lavede and Lee Dockrey of Shawnee, Evelyn and Cecil Anderson of Shawnee, Rita Tefertiller of Shawnee and Ruth and Claude Longest of Santa Maria, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Aug. 30. The Rev. Ralph Johnson of the Community Church of God, Redding, Calif., officiated under the direction of Allen and Dahl Funeral Chapel.

S.C. Sheppard

S.C. "Hoot" Sheppard died Monday in his home in Shawnee. He was 45.

He was born on April 25, 1955, to Robert M. and Ebby Ester (Townsend) Sheppard.

He attended Pleasant Grove Schools in Seminole. On March 9, 1979, he married Karen Sue Haddox in Sayre. He was a member of the Living Word Church of Shawnee and was a Shawnee resident for the last 20 years.

He worked as a custodian and also was in the lawn service landscape business.

He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Tiny Townsend and Lucille Sheppard; infant brother John Sheppard; and grandfathers, Nathan Guy Townsend and Maxwell Sheppard,.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; his parents, of Shawnee; three daughters, Misty Riddle of Shawnee, Shelly Sheppard of Warner and Ebby Christina Pugh of Whitefield, Okla.; one son, Mitch Sheppard of Shawnee; five brothers, Donald Wayne Sheppard, Rob Sheppard, Robert Sheppard, Guy Sheppard and James Sheppard; three sisters, Louise Castoe, Casey Goodall and Theresa Craig; three granddaughters, Cassidy and Destiny Pugh of Whitefield, Okla., and Abigail Riddle of Shawnee; and two grandsons, Nathan Riddle of Shawnee and Chance Sheppard of Shawnee.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Living Word Church. The Rev. Clifton Briscoe will officiate under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Margaret Ruth Thompson

Margaret Ruth Thompson died Sunday at her home in Okemah. She was 89.

She was born on April 8, 1911, in Hartselle, Ala., to Marion Walter Breedlove and Henryetta Sybert Breedlove. On Nov. 8, 1933, she married Jarrett Coleman "Tom" Thompson in Danville, Ala.

The couple owned and operated Tom's Market in Okemah for many years. She had been a resident of Okfuskee County most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and six brothers.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jarrett "Nick" and Johnnie Thompson of Beaumont, Texas, and Thomas D. "Tom" Thompson of Okemah, one brother, Bill Breedlove of Oklahoma City, seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Highland Cemetery Gazebo. The Rev. Jim Waller will officiate under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.

Louise Ashley

Louise Ashley died Tuesday in Shawnee. The long-time Chandler resident was 69.

Services are pending under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Chandler.

Alice Irene (Long) Goodnight

Alice Irene (Long) Goodnight of Seminole died Tuesday at a local hospital. She was 58.

She was born April 11, 1942, in Kinta. She was the daughter of Claude Dale Long and Beulah Pauline (Hall) Long.

She lived most of her life in Seminole County. She married J. Leroy Goodnight on Aug. 6, 1959, in Wewoka.

She was a homemaker. She worked at Blue Bell and received a 10 year pin.

She also worked at Custom Size and Big Yank. She attended Holdenville High School and is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Claude Dale Long on Sept. 6, 1996.

Survivors include her mother, Pauline Long of Cherokee, Kan.; husband, Leroy Goodnight of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Teresa Goodnight of Seminole; David and Cindy Goodnight of Seminole; one brother, James Allen Long of Wolf; nine sisters, Peggy Russell of Holdenville; Betty Crowe of Columbus, Kan.; Janey Johnson, Deborah Bennett, Nora Hoover and Mary Long all of Cherokee, Kan.; Nancy Plumley of Shawnee; Sheila Whittenburg and Kathy Frasher both of Cherokee, Kan.; four grandchildren, Brandon Scott Goodnight, Clarissa Lynn Goodnight, Cara Leanne Goodnight and Alyssa Lynn Goodnight all of Seminole.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Theone L. Grove Walkingstick

Theone L. Grove Walkingstick died Wednesday in Chandler. She was 91.

Mrs. Walkingstick was born April 23, 1909, in Beaver County to O.T. and Stella (Burkett) Grove. She graduated from Okmulgee High School and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.

She married Benjamin Taylor Walkingstick on Nov. 29, 1929. They moved to Tulsa from Shawnee in 1950.

She was active in Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Stephen's Alumni Association and served as a board member for the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ben T. and Bonnie Walkingstick, Chandler; three grandchildren and their spouses, Judy and Joe Gibson and Jeff and Kelly Walkingstick, all of Chandler; Jim and Janet Gotwals, Tulsa; eight great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Okmulgee City Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler, with the Rev. Hugh Willoby officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Benjamin T. and Theone Walkingstick Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 122 W. 10th, Chandler, 74834.

Vivian Karr Crowe

Vivian Karr Crowe of Tecumseh died Wednesday in Shawnee. She was 86.

She was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Tecumseh. She was the daughter of Henry Willis and Sallie (Epperson) Karr.

She was reared in the Tecumseh area, attending school at Liberty Hill and Tecumseh, graduating in 1932 from Tecumseh High School. In 1935, she married Eugene Crowe in Shawnee.

She was a secretary, working for Karr's General Store, Sanders Lab and Shawnee Production Credit, from which she retired.

Mrs. Crow was a charter member of Pottawatomie County Conservative Art Club from 1955 through 1985, and a member of the Tecumseh High School Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Lawrence Karr; her parents; two infant sisters, Luella and Panzy and one infant brother, Wilmer.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Dolores and Glenn Melot of Tecumseh; sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Jack McClure of Asher; grandchildren and spouses, Cindy and Ted Belshe and Tracy and Christy Melot both of Tecumseh; Derek Melot of Lansing, Mich.; five great-grandchildren, Chasity, Dallas and Ted Belshe and Matthew and Stephen Melot; great-great-grandchild, Keren Belshe.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Tecumseh Cemetery with her grandchildren, Cindy Belshe, Tracy Melot and Derek Melot officiating. Services are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
