Claud James McCollum

Shawnee resident Claud James McCollum died Friday in a local nursing home. He was 99.

McCollum was born June 1, 1901, in Dardanelle, Ark., the son of James T. and Ada (Stokes) McCollum.

He worked on the family farm in Holdenville, and later drove a school bus for several years.

He married Opal McDaniel on Jan. 1, 1923, in Holdenville.

McCollum began working in logging camps at the age of 16, and traveled through many states. He bought a farm in Holdenville in 1937, and settled there.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, five brothers and a sister.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Evertt and Cora McCollum, Everman, Texas; Robert and Rene McCollum, Cabot, Ark.; daughter and son-in-law, Lillian and John Fite, Shawnee; six grandchildren, including Carel Barnes and Dana Taylor of Shawnee; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Vernon and Debbie Marley of Shawnee.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Shawnee, with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Anna Ruth LaPach

Anna Ruth LaPach died Friday at her home in Seminole. She was 65.

Mrs. LaPach was born on June 5, 1935, to Granville E. and Ione (Tedder) Gervin. On June 8, 1951, she married Fred LaPach in Oklahoma City.

She worked at the Braum's in Seminole from 1984 until 1992. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Seminole.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a sister, Shirley Bua.

Survivors include two sons, David LaPach of Seminole and Edmond LaPach of Seminole; sister Betty Gevrin of Sacramento, Calif.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Clara Shipp of Choctaw.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Basil Keenan, O.S.B., will officiate under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Rebecca Ann Bishop

Rebecca Ann Bishop died Friday at a local hospital. She was 49.

She was born Oct. 3, 1950, in Shawnee.

Ms. Bishop was a graduate of Seminole High School and a lifetime resident of Seminole.

She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. She later earned a master's degree in reading specialty from East Central University in Ada.

She taught seventh grade at Northwood School in Seminole for 10 years and was a member of the Seminole First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Eugene Bishop on Oct. 22, 1997; and her grandparents, Herman and Opal Bishop and Clare LaVere Williams.

Survivors include her mother, LaVere Bishop of Seminole; her grandmother, Myrtle Williams of Oklahoma City; her brother, William Anderson Bishop of Denver, Colo.; her sister, Mary Amelia Schumacher of Dallas, Texas; brother-in-law, Dr. John Schumacher; sister-in-law, Murri Bishop; aunt and uncle, Arthur and Betty Williams of Dallas, Texas; and nieces, Casey, Lora and Sarah Schumacher and Chris Ann and Katey Bishop.

Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 N.E. 13th Street, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73104-5097.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, with the Rev. David Karges officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Richard Karnes

Little Axe resident Richard "Dick" Karnes, died Saturday. He was 73.

Services are pending under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Leo S. Wright

Leo S. "Stemmie" Wright of Seminole died Friday at a local hospital. He was 79.

He was born April 24, 1921, in Oktaha. He was the son of Curl Wright and Lillie (Walker) Wright.

Wright was a Seminole resident since 1945. He retired from Tinker Air Force Base on June 30, 1978.

Wright was a private first class in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Lester Wright of Tracy, Calif., and Reginald L. "Reggie" Wright of Seminole; two daughters, Fern LaTrese Hall of Dallas, Texas, and Lori D. Sterns of Seminole; six grandchildren, Harold Wright II, James Sterns III, Derek and Roderic Smith, and Stefan and Simone Wright.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. W.D. Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Milton Carl Seckel

Milton Carl Seckel died Friday in a local hospital. He was 79.

He was born Dec. 2, 1920, to George and Alma Otto Seckel. He graduated from Maud High School and worked as a rancher and automotive mechanic.

In May of 1942, he married Louise Seckel. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tecumseh and was a volunteer for the Senior Citizens Center.

Seckel was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and David Willis of Shawnee; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Kelly Seckel of Tecumseh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose Marie and Glen Sturgis and LoRene and Jack Akins; three sisters-in-law, Jane Seckel, Pat Seckel and Opal James; a sister-in-law, Anna Lee; a brother-in-law, Dick Morley; and three grandsons, Justin Seckel, Jeremy Willis and Cody Willis. He is also survived by special friends Jerry, Delitha, Jonathan and Karmyn Kolarik.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Tecumseh. The Rev. W. F. Crow will officiate under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Seckel donated his remains to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Memorials may be made to that organization.

L.P. Orr

L.P. Orr died Saturday in Oklahoma City. He was 74.

He was born near Wellston on Aug. 4, 1926. He was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County.

Orr's career in law enforcement included serving four terms as Lincoln County sheriff and as a U.S. Marshall for the western district of the state.

Survivors include his wife, June Orr of the home; cousins, Matthew Orr of Chandler and Jeannie Yates of Wellston; stepdaughter and her spouse, Cynthia and Michael Johnston of Oklahoma City; and many other relatives and friends.

Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Chandler. Burial will be in the Wellston Cemetery.

Charles Merle Sims

Charles Merle Sims died Friday. He was 83.

He was born April 6, 1917, to Bessie Mae (Moody) Sims and Charley Henry Sims.

He married Dorsa Lee Rose Sims. In the early 1970s, he owned and operated Sims Welding in Seminole. Sims also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After his wife's death, on Aug. 31, 1993, he married Jean Walthers Cheatham.

Sims was preceded in death by his parents; brother Arle Sims; grandson Johnny Merle Sims; and great-grandson Steven Jerid Dichson.

Survivors include his wife, six sons, Charles Sims, LeLand Sims, Coy Sims, Roy Sims and Starr Sims, all of Seminole, and Harold Sims of Houston, Texas; two stepchildren, LoraLei Wilburn of Tulsa and Danny Cheatham of Bixby; three sisters, Elsie Caster, Opal Malone and Hazel McCanless, all of Seminole; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Allen Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Little Cemetery, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
