Elza M. Rogers

Elza M. Rogers of Shawnee died Monday at a Eufaula hospital. She was 79.

She was born May 20, 1921, in Bald Knob, Ark. She was the daughter of Will and Lillie Stephens.

She grew up in the Seminole and Wewoka area where she also attended school. She worked at Girls Town (COJTC) until her retirement in 1986.

She married William E. Rogers Dec. 26, 1940, in Chandler. She was a member of the Church of Christ and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

She was preceded in death by her husband Aug. 30, 1998.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Boyd Pylant, Canadian; Sharon and Doug Gaines, Canadian; Sandra Smithey, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, William E. and Kathy Rogers, Midwest City, eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Margaret Stephens, Miami; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leonard and Eva Rogers, Shawnee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Bob Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Homer E. Lawrence

Homer E. Lawrence died Tuesday in Oklahoma City. He was 83.

He was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Egypt, Ark., the son of John and Letitia (Fort) Lawrence.

He was a longtime resident of Chandler and was the owner of Lawrence Hardware Store in downtown Chandler.

He was member of the First Baptist Church in Chandler and a member of the American Legion. He served as a major in the U.S. Army during World War II.

His parents, four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Lawrence, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Glenda Lawrence of Edmond; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lavonne and Michael Evans of Frederick and Sandra and Wendell Ogrosky of Rolla, Mo.; one brother, J.W. Lawrence of Wenatchee, Wash.; one sister, Opal McGough of Edmond; eight grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Chandler with the Rev. Rick Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Carney Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral home of Chandler.

James Leroy Bumgarner

James Leroy Bumgarner of Weleetka died Sunday in Shawnee. He was 74.

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Dustin. He was the son of Frank and Mary (Tucker) Bumgarner.

He was reared in Dustin. He lived in California for more than 30 years following his military service.

He moved to Oklahoma in 1984. He worked in air conditioning maintenance.

He worked for Rockwell International for more than 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brian Bumgarner; and one sister, Helen Lukens.

Survivors include one daughter, Janeen Grimes of Shawnee; two sons, Johnny Bumgarner of Oklahoma City and Jeff Bumgarner of Weleetka; two brothers, David Bumgarner of Tecumseh and Lonny Bumgarner of Henryetta; four sisters, Lois Chapples of Tecumseh, Velma Rachelle of Wynnewood, Noma Wike of Matador, Texas, and June Cox of Okemah; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held Monday at Wetumka Cemetery with Monte Wike officiating. Services were under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Verna Mae DeHart

Verna Mae DeHart of Denison, Texas, died Sunday in Denison, Texas. She was 82.

She was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Shawnee, the daughter of John and Kathryn (Denson) Gordon.

She married Charles Dennis DeHart on Aug. 15, 1940, in Shawnee and she had worked at the Shawnee Public Schools for 30 years.

She was a member of the East Main Church of Christ. She had lived in Denison, Texas, for the last five years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Wayne DeHart.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jani DeHart, Oklahoma City; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bud Caldwell, Bella Vista, Ark.; four grandchildren, Kelli Littlehead, Edmond; Scott DeHart, Ponca City; Chris Caldwell, Bella Vista, Ark.; Linden DeHart, Oklahoma City, and two special friends, Ruth Longsine and Roberta Allen.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery with Don Sullivan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Home Hospice, P.O. Box 2306 Sherman, Texas, 75091.

Julia Cowart

Julia Cowart of Choctaw died Monday at the age of 86.

She was born on April 10, 1914, to John and Melinda (Mixon) Taylor in Douglas, Ga.

She retired from Smith Hospital in Hahira, Ga., where she worked as a nurse. She moved in 1997 to Harrah to live with her granddaughter, Janice Hughes.

Survivors include two sons, W.D. Tanner and Sidney Tanner, two daughters, Carrie Jean Richardson and Joy Lynn Browning, two sisters, Eva Parker and Faye Hannah, nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Private family services have been arranged with Asa Smith Funeral Service.

Mary Ellen Pernicka

Mary Ellen Pernicka died Sunday in Prague. She was 81.

She was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Prague. She was the daughter of John and Marie (Simecek) Krajicek.

She had been a resident of Prague most of her life. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague.

She was married to George Pernicka on Jan. 31, 1947 and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1992.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Survivors include one brother and his wife, Eddie and Ruth Ann Krajicek, Sapulpa; three sisters and their husbands, Elsie and Vernon Holasek, Oklahoma City; ann Stastny, Prague; Betty and Charles Franks, Oklahoma City; one sister-in-law, Laverna Kraicek, Del City and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Czech National Cemetery with the Rev. Adrian Vorderlanwehr, O.S.B. officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Prague.

Mayme June Ellison Morningstar

Mayme June Ellison Morningstar died Sunday in Shawnee. She was 71.

She was born July 15, 1929, in Centerview. She was the daughter of Finis and Rhoda (Wilson) Montgomery.

She graduated from Centerview High School with the class of 1947. She was a retired bank employee, having worked at the Prague National Bank in Prague and the First Bank of Moore.

Mrs. Morningstar was a member of the First Christian Church of Moore. She was married to Lendon Ellison in Van Buren, Ark. in 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1968.

She then married Glen O. Morningstar in 1978 and he preceded her in death in 1987.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Pat Ellison, Shawnee; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mike Wood, Blanchard; two brothers and their wives, Adler and Leona Montgomery, Afton; Bob and Beverly Montgomery, Chanute, Kan.; one sister, Opal Licklider, Prague; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Prague with the Rev. David Licklider officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Prague.

Frances Lela Brundage

Frances Lee Brundage died Sunday in Shawnee. The Tecumseh resident was 74.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1925, to Floyd and Bertha (Warden) Bugg. She was a graduate of Tribbey High School. Mrs. Brundage worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a fingerprint specialist and then spent many years working for Sylvania and Western Electric before retirement.

She was a member of the Tribbey Church of Christ.

Mrs. Brundage was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joan Bugg.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Elmo Fullbright of Tecumseh, one son and daughter-in-law, Druce, J. and April Brundage of Tecumseh, six grandchildren, Tony Fullbright, Melissa Fullbright, Lacy Brundage, Adam Fullbright, Curt Brundage and Austin Brundage. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and one brother, Floyd Bugg Jr.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel. Dale Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Tecumseh Cemetery.
