Cecil Kenneth Kickapoo

Cecil Kenneth Kickapoo of Shawnee died Tuesday in Shawnee. He was 71.

He was born May 1, 1930, in Tecumseh to Roy and Lillian Lilly (Panther) Kickapoo. He was a graduate of Bethel High School.

He was born and reared in Tecumseh. After graduation, he joined the military, then moved to Rock Island, Ill., where he was a sheriff's deputy for 23 years. Upon retirement, he moved back to Shawnee.

On May 20, 1957, he married Barbara Lane in Tijuana, Mexico.

He served in the U.S. Navy for two years and the U.S. Marines for three years, serving in the Korean War.

Kickapoo was an Absentee Shawnee Tribal member, a tribal judge, a Housing Authority board member and tax commissioner. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Blue Lodge and a Consistory member in Silvis, Ill.

Kickapoo and his wife were foster parents for more than 35 years in Illinois and Shawnee.

Preceding him in death were his parents, son, Walkeen Kickapoo; daughter Alice Kickapoo; two sisters, Gladys Brown and Francis "Frankie" Mann.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Marquita and Charles Schofield of Shawnee and Kristen Kickapoo of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roy and Meridee Kickapoo of Shawnee and Christopher Kickapoo of Shawnee; sister Bernice Marlene (Mann) Pope of Norman; two grandsons, five granddaughters and five great-granddaughters.

Services will be this morning at the Kickapoo Family Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Jones and Johnny Mann officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Tribal rites were held Tuesday at the Kickapoo Family Home.

Louise D. Otto

Louise D. Otto, 75, died Monday in her Shawnee home.

She was born July 27, 1926, in Coalgate, the daughter of Joseph Jasper Ruth and Annie Laura (Miller) Ruth.

She moved to Shawnee with her parents in 1942. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1944 and attended Neff Business College.

She and Elmer Otto were married May 9, 1947, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mrs. Otto, a rural carrier for Shawnee Post Office for 13 years, retired in 1981 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Otto was a member of Aydelotte Baptist Church and a longtime member of Hagar Home Economic Club.

Her parents and one son, Donald Lee Otto, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her two daughters and a son-in-law, Gaile and George Thorpe of Watauga, Tenn., and Donna Brophy of Carlsbad, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Sylvia Ruth of New York City, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 4 p.m. Friday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Richard Gay will officiate. A graveside service will be conducted by Commissioner Fred Ruth at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Melvin Cruzan

Former Stroud area resident Melvin Cruzan, Canyon Lake, Texas, died Sunday in Canyon Lake at the age of 87.

He was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Cushing to David and Sara (Pogue) Cruzan.

Cruzan, who was self-employed, was a member of the First Christian Church of Stroud. He served in the Army during World War II.

On Aug. 22, 1932, he married Louotta Lydick in Pryor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and three brothers.

Survivors include his two sons, Roger Cruzan and Randy Cruzan, both of Canyon Lake; a brother, Tom Cruzan of Cushing; a sister, Dorothy Martin of Oklahoma City, and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Stroud. The Rev. Sandy Chace will officiate. Burial will be at Stroud Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Stroud.

J.B. Sterba

Shawnee resident J.B. Sterba died Wednesday at his residence. He was 74.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Resthaven Funeral Home with Dr. Reed Lynn officiating. Burial will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Park.

He was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Lahoma to Ernest and Zeta (Heilig) Sterba. He grew up in Billings, graduating from Billings High School in 1944. He married Thelma Foster Feb. 15, 1947, in Ponca City. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46, during World War II.

Serba, an independent truck driver and welder, was a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church for 40 years and also was a member of Disabled American Veterans and AMVETS.

He had lived in Shawnee for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a great-aunt.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Cynthia L. Sterba of Wayne, Jay and Phyllis Sterba of Weatherford; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Teresa and Larry Ninman of Ryan; and six grandchildren, Jansen Sterba, Joshua Sterba, Aaron Sterba, Elizabeth Ninman, Jennifer Ninman and Lucas Ninman.

The family has designated Rock Creek Baptist Church of Shawnee or Hospice of Shawnee for memorial contributions.

A.C. Stewart

Longtime Shawnee grocer A.C. Stewart, 88, died Saturday in a Cushing hospital.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Tecumseh Cemetery with the Rev. DuWayne Colvin officiating. Roesch-Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Oct. 27, 1912, in Macomb to Kellie and Lydia (Landon) Stewart. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1930 and attended the University of Oklahoma.

Stewart married Lucy Mary Lyday Oct. 31, 1937, in Prague.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Stewart owned Stewart Grocery and Market, 602 E. Highland, for more than 60 years. He operated the store with his father until his father died in 1963. Other family members helped run the grocery until it closed in 1987 after the death of Stewart's wife.

The store was subsequently sold and has reopened as The Groves, a gift shop.

Stewart was a member of the Wallace Avenue Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by wife, Lucy; a son, Robert "Gene" Stewart; a daughter-in-law, Rowhia (Hefney) Stewart; a sister, Louise Jackson; three brothers-in-law, Morris Lloyd, Ed Stephen and J.D. "Jack" Jackson; both parents; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, S.M. "Soland" and Alice (Hinesley) Lyday.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Jorun Stewart of Fjerdingby, Norway; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Loreida Lloyd and Aline Stephen, Mae and Russell Hathcock, all of Shawnee; three nieces, three nephews and several other relatives in Oklahoma, Colorado and California.

Pollyjean Quarnstrom McNamara

Pollyjean Quarnstrom McNamara, 83, Prague, died Monday in Oklahoma City.

She was born Feb. 10. 1918, in Watertown, S.D., the daughter of Helen Zac and Eugene Quarnstrom.

On April 29, 1937, she was married in Chicago, Ill., to Ben McNamara, who preceded her in death in December 1984.

She lived in California most of her adult life, moving to Oklahoma City in 1988. She moved to Prague in 1993

Mrs. McNamara was a medical insurance supervisor at the El Monte Hospital. While living in Prague, she was active in Eastern Star, Prague Hospital Auxiliary, Prague United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Red Cross Blood Drive and the K.C. Club.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Eugene and Anilee McNamara; a daughter, Nancy Williams of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Prague United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Demuth Funeral Home, Oklahoma City.

Lois Pearl Alexander

Lois Pearl Alexander, 87, Seminole, died Tuesday at a Seminole hospital.

She was born July 8, 1914, in Wichita Falls, Texas, the daughter of Charles Marion Sparks and Mary Evelyn (McCoy) Sparks. She moved to Seminole from Chickasha 61 years ago.

She and the Rev. Byrd Lee Alexander were married Aug. 26, 1945, in Bowlegs.

Mrs. Alexander had retired as minister of Old Glory Assembly of God. She was a member of General Council of Assemblies of God.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; sister, Roxie Davis of Seminole, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole. The Rev. Trina Smithee will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Kenneth O. Watts

Shawnee resident Kenneth O. Watts, 84, died Wednesday at a local nursing home.

Services are pending with Resthaven Funeral Home.

Judy Mae (Sala) Quary

Judy Mae (Sala) Quary died Tuesday in her home near Prague. She was 52.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Prague. The Rev. Jim Estep will officiate. Burial will follow at Kellerby Cemetery near Prague.

She was born Oct. 18, 1948, in Prague, the daughter of George F. and Juanita (Cook) Sala.

She married Henry Quary on Aug. 6, 1966, in Stroud. The homemaker had lived in Prague most of her life.

Preceding her in death were her mother, one brother, one sister and three nephews.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Quary of Prague; father, George F. Sala of Prague; a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Terri Quary of Prague; grandchildren, Tony, Sala, Chelsi and Diana, all of Prague; a brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Beverly Sala of Shawnee; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Larry Lehenbauer and Wanda and Don McNeil, all of Mustang; Mary Lou and Kenny Tootle of Yukon; Linda and Danny Cooper and Pam and Bobby Cooper, all of Prague. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews.
