Trevis Elms

Trevis Elms, 70, of Shawnee died Thursday at a local hospital.

He was born May 14, 1930, in Shawnee, the son of William Claude and Bevie (Blaylock) Elms.

Elms attended school in Shawnee. He owned and operated Travis' Body Shop on East Highland in Shawnee for more than 46 years.

On Nov. 17, 1953, he married Peggy Koffey in Shawnee on Nov. 17, 1953.

Elms served in the U.S. Army infantry for two years. While in the military, he played baseball for the Fort Sill team.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy of the home; two children, Chuck Elms of Fort Worth, Texas, and Cindy Hartman and her husband Anthony of Ardmore; a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and June Elms of Amarillo, Texas; two grandchildren, Warren and Katelyn Hartman; and two nephews and a niece.

A service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Home. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Arrangements are being handled by Resthaven Funeral Home.

Mary Beth Byrne

Prague High School graduate Mary Beth (Sikes) Byrne, 33, died Jan. 19 in Laurel. Md.

She was born May 9, 1968, in Oklahoma City to Arthur and Judy (Nosalek) Sikes.

She was a 1986 graduate of Prague High School where she received the first Duncan Scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. After two years, she moved to New York and graduated summa cum laude from Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

Byrne then moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed by Sprenger and Lang.

She married James Michael Byrne May 27, 1995, in Taneytown, Md.

She was employed by Dickstein, Shapiro, Morin & Oshinsky of Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and father-in-law.

Survivors include her husband, James Michael Byrne of Laurel, Md.; parents, Art and Judy Sikes of Prague; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Marla Sikes of Moore; sister and brother-in-law, Megan and Phillip Jackson of Earlsboro; grandmother, Helen Nosalek of Branson, Mo; mother-in-law, Mary Byrne of Pinehurst, N.C.; brothers-in-law, William Byrne III of Baltimore, Md., Tom Byrne of Tulluride, Colo., Matthew Byrne of News York, N.Y., and Peter Byrne of New York, N.Y.; nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Services were held Jan. 23 at the Maryland City Baptist Church, Maryland City, Md., with the Rev. Philip Schol officiating. Burial was Jan. 24 at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation.

Claudia L. VanAntwerp

Claudia L. VanAntwerp, 77, of Shawnee died Tuesday at her home.

She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Vernon, Texas, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Etta Glover.

She attended and graduated from Maud High School. During World War II, she worked at Douglas Air Field as a riveter. She was a homemaker.

On Jan. 11, 1946, she married Warren VanAntwerp in Shawnee.

She lived in Shawnee for more than 56 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronnie VanAntwerp; a daughter, Barbara Goodman; two brothers, Bob Glover and R.E. Glover; and a sister, Bonita Richberg.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Thurston Munn and Terri and Robert Robison, all of Shawnee, and Jan and David Shults of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Cheryl Miller of Shawnee; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Beverly VanAntwerp of Rock Port, Texas, Steve and Donna VanAntwerp, Mike and April VanAntwerp and Jim and Kimi VanAntwerp, all of Shawnee; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Pence officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Arrangements are being handled by Resthaven Funeral Home.

Vitae (Werrell) Bell

Vitae (Werrell) Bell, 97, of Tecumseh died Thursday in Shawnee.

She was born Oct. 13, 1904, in Romulus, Pottawatomie County, Indian Territory, the 12th of 14 children born to William Lewis and Sarah Elizabeth (Harbert) Werrell.

She graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1924 and attended Southwestern College in Weatherford.

She was a lifetime Pottawatomie County resident who attended the Tecumseh Alumni Banquet for 75 consecutive years.

On Oct. 4, 1925, she married Newton Preston Bell in Shawnee.

The Bells retired in 1984 from ownership of Morgan's Pharmacy in Tecumseh and raised Hereford cattle on their Hilltop Hereford Ranch outside Tecumseh. They were longtime members of the Roundup Club. She was a member of First Christian Church of Tecumseh for 85 years.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Vada Wenonah Bell Wilson of Hutchinson, Kan.; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Lewis and Judith Bell of Shawnee; grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Robert Mark and Lynn Wilson of Great Bend, Kan., Carrie Ann Wilson Jones of Prairieville, Texas, Phyllis Hammons of Ada and Steve and Pat Guinn of Tecumseh; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Bill Crawford officiating. The casket will remain open at Cooper Funeral Home until 1:45 p.m. Monday. It will not be re-opened following the service.

Ruth C. Butler

Longtime Agra and Cushing resident Ruth C. Butler, 79, died Thursday at Cushing Nursing Home.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Butler, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Vicki Butler, Greenville, Texas, and Gary and Donna Butler, Mesquite, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law Ruth Ann and Vann Campbell, Arlington, Texas, and Linda and Hubert Foxworth, Longview, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Ida Lee Chesmore of Cushing; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church, Cushing, with the Rev. Ralph Hickman officiating. Burial will follow at Osage Cemetery in Agra. Services are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.

Louise C. (Schiltz) Marak

Louise C. (Schiltz) Marak, 74, of Meeker died Wednesday at a local hospital.

She was born July 21, 1927, in Ponca City to Joe and Lucia Schiltz.

She graduated from St. Mary in Ponca City.

Marak was a 1948 graduate of the school of nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in Ponca City. She worked as a registered nurse 12 years at Prague Municipal Hospital.

She married Wilfrid Marak Nov. 10, 1948, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ponca City.

She was member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in Meeker, a member of the Altar Society, Busy Bee Homemakers, the Oklahoma Nursing Association and was a church organist. She also worked for the election board.

She is survived by her husband, Wilfrid Marak of the home; eight children and spouses, Janice and Dale Broudrick, Steve and Robbie Marak, Jim Marak, Margaret Seymour, Carolyn and Darrell Sims, all of Meeker; Catherine and Dana Roberts, Joan and Tommy Walters, all of Prague, and Karen and Donnie Wallis, Glenpool, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Pat Schiltz, Ray and Donna Schiltz and Don and Colleen Schiltz, all of Ponca City; four brothers-in-law and spouses, Edward and Rita Marak, Joe and Louise Marak, and Louis and Philomene Marak and Bob Mathews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Adrian Vorderlandwehr, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Meeker, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. A prayer service will be 6 p.m. Friday at St. Michael Church, Meeker.

Those wishing may make donations to St. Michael Catholic Church.

Charles K. Smith

Charles K. Smith, 76, of Shawnee died Thursday at a local nursing home.

He was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Oklahoma City, the son of Charles Knight Smith and Ellen Smith.

He was a small business operator until his retirement in 1993 and served in the military in World War II.

He married Betty Lou Horrocks in 1947.

Smith was preceded in death by his wife, in November 2001, a sister, Peggy Watson, two daughters, Sabra Bickers and Jo Ann Smith, and a son, Charlie Smith.

Survivors include three granddaughters and their spouses, Victoria and Sam Cooper of Prague, Sylene and Marty Kosemund of Macomb and Rebecca and Doug Stills of Moore; two sisters-in-law, Rose Boswell of California and Maxine Dusing of Washington state; and seven great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Queenie V. Sullivan

Saint Louis native Queenie V. Sullivan, 93, died Sunday at a care center in Tecumseh.

Sullivan was born May 13, 1908, to Aaron Joshua Gillham and Epsie P. Gillham.

She married W.M. Sullivan on May 11, 1927, in Pottawatomie County. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1972.

Sullivan was a charter member of the Saint Louis First Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker.

She also was preceded in death by one son, William Harold "Frog" Sullivan.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Joyce Sullivan of Saint Louis; grandchildren and their spouses, Pam and Gary Smith of Saint Louis, Mary Sullivan of Saint Louis, Marty and Paula Sullivan of Norman, Rusty and Sherry Sullivan of Saint Louis, Susie and Gary Kilcrease of Velma, and Gail and Jerry Collins of Shawnee; one sister and brother-in-law, Delia and Paul Castillow of Shawnee; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Saint Louis Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Peck officiating.

Burial will be in the Wolf Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud.

Pearl Endwright

Pearl Endwright, 88, of Maud died Sunday at a Seminole Hospital.

She was born in Tunnelton, Ind., on Aug. 16, 1913, the daughter of Archer and Goldie Mae (True) Green.

She married Earl M. Endwright on March 31, 1934 in Paoli, Ind. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1992.

Endwright was a homemaker.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Wanda Endwright of Maud; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole. Burial will be in Little Cemetery.

Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home of Maud is handling arrangements.

Estelle Sevilla Courtney

Estelle Sevilla Courtney, 105, Konawa, died Sunday at her home.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-laws, Edward M. and Betty Courtney, Del City, and Milton and Anna Courtney, Konawa; two daughters and a son-in-law, May Marie Bell, Oklahoma City, and June and James R. "Bob" Skaggs, Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pickard Swearington Funeral Home with the Rev. Pam Shirk officiating. Burial follows in Konawa Cemetery.
