Helen Roezella Gilliam

Helen Roezella Gilliam, 88, Shawnee, died Tuesday in Tuttle.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jerry Ball officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery. The casket will remain open at the funeral home until 1:45 p.m. and will not be opened again.

Mrs. Gilliam was born Feb. 10, 1011, in Greenwood, Neb., to George L. and Pearl Young. She married Tom Gilliam Nov. 28, 1927, in Purcell.

She and her husband owned the Gilliam Furniture Hospital for more than 50 years. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the W.M.U., Fedalis Sunday school class and taught children 2 years to 4 years old in Sunday school. She was active in Retired Senior Volunteers program and Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Debbie Gilliam, Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ray Bradford, Tuttle; eight grandchildren, Jack Riley, Tom Riley, Carol Riley, all of Shawnee; Ellen Forsythe, Georgetown, Texas; Tom Gilliam and Tony Gilliam, both of Austin, Texas; Paul Bradford, Tuttle; Jamie Bradford, Brenham, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Dan Beck, Shawnee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Jo Young, Orange, Texas; Edward and Thelma Young, Salinas, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Nadine Riley; two brothers, Clifford Young and Harlow Young.

Susan Rebecca Coleman

Susan Rebecca Coleman died Wednesday. She was 68.

She was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Asher, the daughter of Raymond Mayo and Elisia A. (Mohoney) Pierson. She was a resident of Stroud most of her life and was a member of the Church of Christ in Stroud.

She worked as an inspector for Paramount Manufacturing in Stroud and married J.E. Coleman on June 10, 1948.

Preceding her in death were her father, one son, one grandson, one sister and one daughter-in-law.

Surviving are her husband, J.E., Stroud; three sons, David Coleman and wife Rosene, Mustang; Donald Coleman, Stroud; Patrick Coleman, Stroud; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Minter, Tulsa; her mother, Elisia Pierson, Stroud; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Marie Pierson, Odessa, Texas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Irma and Russell Howard, Waco, Texas; Betty and William Brauer, Prague; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Stroud with Henry Petree officiating. Burial will follow in the Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

LeRoy Grant

LeRoy Grant died Tuesday. He was 79.

He was born April 2, 1919, in Milfay, Okla., to Marcus and Maggie (Lucas) Grant. He was resident of Milfay, where he was affiliated with the First Baptist Church. He worked many jobs throughout his life, including working in the oilfields and driving the Milfay bus, as well as ranching and farming.

He married Jessie Annabelle Treat in Stillwater on May 1, 1947.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie, on Dec. 6, 1992; his parents; one grandchild and two brothers.

Surviving are three sons, LeeRoy Grant Jr., Seattle, Wash.; Mark Grant, Oklahoma City; and David Grant, Prague; three daughters, Betty Alston, Okmulgee; Marcella Brandenburg, Stroud; and Kathy Grant, Shawnee; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Milfay with the Rev. Harold Gaches officiating. Burial will follow in the Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Turner J. Smith

Turner J. Smith died March 6 at the age of 76 in Omaha, Neb.

He was born July 20, 1922, west of Eufaula in McIntosh County to Jose (Pahoseyhola) Smith and Bessie (Scott) Smith.

He was raised in Eufaula and considered the Eufaula-Checotah area home, although he resided in Nebraska for a number of years.

Turner was a member of the Tuskegee Baptist Church, Eufaula. He served eight years in the armed forces during World War II.

He worked with Native American youth in the Omaha area, guiding them through educational and traditional means.

Survivors include one stepson, Steve McIlree, Omaha; two sisters, Fannie Rogers and Hannah July, both of Checotah; one brother, Joe H. Smith, Earlsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Deep Fork Hillabee Baptist Church, north of Eufaula.

James Edward Stephens

Lifelong Shawnee resident James Edward Stephens died Tuesday at an Ada hospital. He was 53.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bro. Dale Kinslow officiating. Burial will be in Wakolee Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Stephens was born Sept. 11, 1945, in Shawnee to Albert G. and Marie (Wakolee) Stephens. He attended Shawnee schools and was a self-employed construction worker. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a member of the Sac and Fox Tribe.

Survivors include his daughters, Rose Marie Stephens, Meeker; Crystal LaDawn Stephens, Shawnee; son, William Lee Stephens, Shawnee; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Lonnie Vandever, Shawnee; sister, Rose M. Thompson, Shawnee; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bobby J. Stephens.

Joe H. Smith

Longtime Earlsboro resident Joe H. Smith died Wednesday in Earlsboro. He was 91.

Smith was born Jan. 9, 1909, in Eufaula to Josie Pahoseyahola and Soatka (Harley) Smith. He attended school at Okmulgee, Chillocco and Eufaula.

On Dec. 31, 1960, he married Juanita Caldwell in Holdenville. He worked for Rock Island Railroad and retired in 1974 with more than 30 years of service.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the 28th Infantry, serving in France and Germany. He was a member of the Creek Tribe, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Lodge No. 522 and the Shawnee VFW Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita (Caldwell) Smith, of the home; five sons, James Eugene Smith, Haysville, Kan.; Joe Dean Smith, Tecumseh; Bobby Dale Smith, Longview, Wash.; Johney Hartman, Longtown, Okla.; and Jerry Kegley, Earlsboro; five daughters, Betty Hollingsworth, Seminole; Wanda Jayne Card, Santa Cruz, Calif.; Pat Barnhart and Wanda Treat, both of Earlsboro; Mary Kieffer, Eufala; sister, Hannah July, Checotah; 34 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Glenn Smith and Don McCormack; three brothers, Ben, Al and Turner Smith; and three sisters, Fannie Rogers, Betty Bear and Loddie Pahoseyahola.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Little Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home with O.J. "Junior" Mize officiating.

Dan Likens

Former Dale resident Dan Likens of Steilacoom, Wash., died April 4 at his home. He was 59.

Likens was born Sept. 13, 1940, in Dale to Roscoe and Lorene Likens. He graduated from Dale High School in 1957. He then entered the Army, serving in Vietnam and Germany as well as stateside military posts. He retired as a major after a 20-year career. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; son, Leon; daughter, Rachel; and mother, Lorene, all of the home; brother, Andrew Likens, Dewey, Okla.; sister, Florence Newton, Dale; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held April 8 at the Lakeview Church of Christ, Lakewood, Wash. Burial was at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash.

Grace Margaret Soderstrom

Grace Margaret Soderstrom, 80, died Thursday in Davenport.

She was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Midlothian, the daughter of Grover and Verl (McKibbon) Edmondson.

She married Joseph John Soderstrom in 1938 in Guthrie.

Mrs. Soderstrom lived in the Davenport and Chandler areas all her life. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, on brother and four sisters.

Survivors include her sons, George Soderstrom, Carl Soderstrom, Dan Soderstrom and Randy Soderstrom, all of Davenport, and Sven Soderstrom, Chandler; daughters, Ingrid Campbell, Van Buren, Ark., Betty Joe Holton, Jones, Inga Iler, Moore, Mary Ann Martin, Oklahoma City, Nita Patterson, Irving, Texas, Ina Simon, Oklahoma City, Cheryl Jean Sutton, Davenport, and Ila Skorgsberg, Covina, Calif.; brothers, Bill Edmondson, Fresno, Calif., Buford Edmondson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sam Edmondson, Fresno, Calif.; sister, Lois Jolley, Sand Springs; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler with the Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler.

Carl G. Baxter

Carl G. Baxter of Shawnee died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 71.

Baxter was born Oct. 12, 1929, in Purcell to Grady and Stella Baxter. He graduated high school in Verden, Okla., and attended one year at the University of Oklahoma, Norman.

In December 1969, he married LaVon Middleton in Shawnee.

Baxter served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and retired from Tinker Air Force Base, where he was a sheet metal worker.

He was a deacon at Liberty Baptist Church and had lived in Shawnee the past 34 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife, LaVon Baxter, of the home; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Ron and Sheri Baxter, McLoud; Kenny and Debbie Baxter, Dallas, Texas; Danny and Valerie Baxter, Shawnee; Alan Baxter, Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Don Embry, Purcell; stepson, David Bennett, Norman; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Standridge, Norman; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Orvil Baxter, Norman; Jim and Helen Baxter, Harrah; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Liberty Baptist Church with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Prague Cemetery. Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Carl Baxter Memorial Fund at Liberty Baptist Church.

Myrtle Clark

Myrtle Clark of Tecumseh died Wednesday in Shawnee. She was 88.

She was born April 16, 1913, in Plato, Mo., to Hal and Enola (Rook) Rainey. On Jan. 14, 1967, she married C.E. Clark in Heavener; he preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1999.

The lifelong resident of the Shawnee and Tecumseh areas was a homemaker and member of Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. today at Tecumseh Cemetery with the Rev. Michael McCauley officiating. Cooper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Ray Hicks

Paul Ray Hicks, Stroud, died Thursday in Stroud. He was 79.

Hicks was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Jenks to Albert and Mintie (Dyer) Hicks. He married Juanita Bly in 1951 at Wichita, Kan.

Hicks was a mechanical engineer and welder.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Hicks, of the home; daughter, Paula Sue Ackerman, Stroud; grandson and his wife, Bryan and Leah Ackerman, Stroud; four great-grandchildren, Allison, Casey, Kendall and Kyle Ackerman, all of Stroud; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Stroud, with the Rev. Joe Molencupp officiating. Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Stroud, is in charge of arrangements.

John Oliver Tainpeah

John Oliver Tainpeah of Shawnee died Wednesday in Shawnee. He was 68.

Tainpeah was born May 16, 1933, in Anadarko to Guy and Alice (Pickard) Tainpeah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law, Russell Kent and Jeanette Tainpeah, Cushing; Ray Tainpeah and John Oliver Tainpeah Jr., both of Shawnee; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Allison Faye and David Nordyke, Cheryl Christina Faxon and Teresa Lynn and Shannon Stephens, all of Shawnee; 11 grandchildren, three sisters, Ann Villicana and Jean Weathers, both of Oklahoma City; Flora Schrock, Verden; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Smith Funeral Chapel, Anadarko, with the Rev. George Daingkau officiating. Prayer service will be 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Smith Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Tanedoah Cemetery.
