L.D. Kessinger

L.D. Kessinger of Shawnee died Wednesday in an Oklahoma City hospital. Arrangements are pending with Gaskill-Owens.

Ladine Karnes

Ladine Karnes, 73, Newalla, died Tuesday in Norman.

She was born in Crane, Texas, on Aug. 13, 1927, the daughter of Lee and Dorothy (Renfro) Barber. She graduated from high school in Wichita, Kan., and received her diploma from Draughan's School of Business.

A resident of Newalla for the last eight years, Mrs. Karnes also had lived in Seminole, Texas.

In 1945, she married Jack Brown, who preceded her in death in March of 1967. In 1975, she married Richard "Dick" Karnes, who preceded her in death in September of 2000.

She worked at the Freeport National Bank of Freeport, Texas, for more than 10 years. Mrs. Karnes also was a bookkeeper for the Absentee Shawnee Smoke Shop.

While in Freeport, she was a member of the Freeport Business and Professional Women's Association. Mrs. Karnes also was a volunteer for the Little Axe Community Center.

Also preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jackye and Don Hatley of Wichita Falls, Texas; Darla and Jerry Shrum of Knowles, Texas; and Terry Brown of Little Axe; six grandchildren, Shelley Hatley Blow, Shana Vordenbaum, Bill Shrum; Darla Platt, Robby Byrd and Jack Woods; 14 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Gilbert Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery.

Walter Lena

Walter "Knock-Knee" Lena, Seminole, died Monday at Shawnee Care Center. He was 81.

He was born in Wewoka on Dec. 24, 1919, the son of Lillie Lena and Lucy Reed Lena. The lifelong Seminole County resident was a member of Sand Creek Baptist Church. He was married to Stella (Barnett) Lena.

Lena was a welder for Hildebrand and Son Co. until retiring in 1982.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Newman Lena; his sister, Marie Long, and his granddaughter, Anna Marie Lena.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; five sons, Louie Lena of Oklahoma City; Dean Lena of Midwest City; Leon Lena of Phoenix, Ariz.; Benny Lena of Shawnee; Mark Lena of Shawnee, and Tony Lena; three daughters, Shirley McBride of Muskogee; Linda Lena of New Lima, and Kahleetah Williams of Seminole; two brothers Pete Lena of Wewoka and Russell Valedez of Oklahoma City; five sisters Irene Freeman of Tulsa; Eula Mae Robinson of Holdenville; Mabel Ward of Seminole; Freddie Lena of Wewoka, and Peggy Mahoney of Oklahoma City; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A wake service will be 6:30 p.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be held until 4 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sand Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Houston Tiger and the Rev. Bill Barnett will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery.

Belle F. Kirk

Belle F. Kirk died Tuesday in Midwest City. The Del City resident was 82.

She was born on Oct. 10, 1918, in Shell Knob, Mo. The daughter of George W. Willis and Lizzie (Stover) Willis graduated from St. Louis High School in St. Louis, Okla. In 1939, she married Glen Kirk.

Mrs. Kirk worked for an aircraft manufacturer in San Diego, Calif. She spent several years in Saudi Arabia. She was a homemaker and worked at University Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Kirk was a member of Del City Church of Christ.

Preceding her in death were her husband, four sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Sylvia Kirk of Long Island, N.Y.; her granddaughter Debra; her grandson Eric, a great-granddaughter; her brother, Ralph Johnson of Redding, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews, including nieces, Ann Perry and husband Robert of Shawnee, and Sue Farris of Shawnee.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Eisenhour Funeral Chapel in Del City. Burial will be in Shell Knob, Mo.

Iola (Decker) Gatlin

Iola (Decker) Gatlin, 80, Meeker, died Wednesday. Services are pending with Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel, Prague.

Roger DeWayne Brooks

Roger DeWayne Brooks, Oklahoma City, died Sunday at the age of 47 after battling cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Bill Eisenhour Southeast Chapel in Oklahoma City with the Rev. Bill Matthews and the Rev. Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee.

He was born June 22, 1951, in Shawnee to J.A. "Jiggs" and Helen F. (Steph) Brooks. He was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Brooks graduated in 1969 from Shawnee High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1973, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He served in Vietnam and received the Rifle Marksman Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal/device, Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He worked as a plastic worker at Tinker Air Force Base from August 1974 until his retirement in January 1998.

He married Sandra Lee "Sandy" Baxter in Oklahoma City on May 12, 1978.

His father preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Lee, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Jean and Ronny Pennington, El Reno, and Melissa Mary and Brad Rowe, Midwest City; grandchildren, Cameron Rowe and Andrew Pennington; his mother, Helen Brooks, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, James and Kathie Brooks, Bethel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Wayne Rakett, Yukon, and Sherrie and Tim Parsons, Tecumseh; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Margie Baxter, Lawton; father-in-law, Homer Baxter, Lawton, and many other relatives, including an aunt, Mary Lamb, Shawnee.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Oklahoma County or the American Cancer Society.

Melvin O. Whittington

Longtime Shawnee educator Melvin O. Whittington died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Melvin O. Whittington was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Quinton, Okla., the son of Robert and Myrtle (Bland) Whittington. His father had died three months before he was born.

He moved to Shawnee when he was 5 and attended Shawnee Schools. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1936. He was a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and did graduate study at the University of Oklahoma.

He married Virginia Dunn in Shawnee on July 30, 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and participated in three invasions, Okinawa, the Philippine liberation and Iwo Jima. He also helped take the first troops into occupied Japan.

Whittington taught at Shawnee High School for 31 years and at Acme School for one year.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and its Men's Fellowship Class and T'N'Ts. He was a member of Oklahoma, National and Pottawatomie County Retired Teachers Associations, Gideons International, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and U.S.S. Hansford Ship Mates.

Also preceding him in death was his mother in 1940.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Whittington, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Sherre Whittington, Eufaula; Darrell and Mary Ann Whittington, Shawnee; Melvin Jr. and Patricia Whittington, Tulsa; six grandchildren, Tracey Jones, Muskogee; Chris Whittington, Tiffany Whittington, both of Shawnee; Rick Whittington, Ann Smith, Janie Whittington, all of Tulsa, and five great-grandchildren.

Idell O. Furr

Idell O. Furr died Monday at her Shawnee home. She was 79.

She was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Shiloh, Ark., the daughter of Will and Talitha Hunt. She attended school in Byars. She married Clarence Ray Furr on Dec. 2, 1939, and was a homemaker. She lived in the San Francisco Bay area from 1941 to 1980, when she moved to Shawnee.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and her sister, Ophelia Moody.

Surviving are her daughter, LaChresia Whitley, Shawnee; brother, Hubert Hunt, Asher; sister, Wilma Tolson, McAlester; grandchildren, David Whitley, Norman; Linda Pahdoco, Swansea, Ill., four great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Matthews and the Rev. Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mauntre' Lamon Battle

Mauntre' Lamon Battle, infant son of Montrece Battle of Oklahoma City, died Monday at the age of 8 weeks.

He and his twin brother, Tre'maun Damien Battle, were born Dec. 8, 1998, in Oklahoma City. His brother preceded him in death on Dec. 28. He is survived by his mother.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Clearview Cemetery of Chandler with the Rev. Lee Lee Lewis officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Chandler.

Dempsey Kellum

Konawa resident Dempsey "Pud"Kellum, 81, died Tuesday in Ada.

Survivors include three sisters, Lena Simpson of Ada, Wilma Whittenburg of Lamont, Ill., and Jerlean Wolfe of Quartzsite, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Chapel of Konawa with the Rev. Mitch Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery.

Stella Loraine Bush

Seminole resident Stella "Pumpkin" Loraine Bush, 79, died Monday at Seminole Estates Nursing Center.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Paula Davis Dommert and Tracy Davis Melton; five great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, W.E. Woodward of Miami.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Steve Callies

Steve Callies died Saturday in Edmond. He was 46.

He was born Nov. 20, 1953, in Mountain Grove, Mo. He was the son of Lesley and Mary (Lindley) Callies.

He worked as a computer consultant in the Houston, Texas, area. Callies was married to Renee' Dunford on Aug. 9, 1974, in Bethany.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Survivors include three daughters, Heather, Shannan and Lindsey Callies of Kingwood, Texas; one grandson, Ethan of Kingwood, Texas; his mother, Mary Callies of Yukon; two brothers, Fred Callies of Yukon and Harold Callies of Norman; three sisters, Joy Bond of Yukon, Ruth Roach of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Laura Womack of Yukon and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today in the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler with the Rev. Gary Simons officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oak Park Cemetery under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Chandler.

Adolph Maldonado Garza

Meeker resident Adolph Maldonado Garza died Saturday in Oklahoma City. He was 77.

Garza was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Texas, the son of Juan and Marie (Maldonado) Garza.

He married Dorothy "Dot" Salter on Oct. 22, 1999, in Eureka Springs, Ark.

Garza served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Garza was a retired butcher.

He attended the First United Methodist Church in Meeker.

Garza was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a 32nd degree Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Marie Garza; a granddaughter; a brother; and former wife, Mary Ann.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Garza of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lance and Mary Garza, Oklahoma City, and Mike and Karman Garza, Newalla; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Cecilia and Edward Kauble, Phoenix, Ariz., Linda and Jim Hines, Choctaw, Vicky and Steve Yeargain, Harrah, Melody Garza and Lawrence Flud, Tulsa, and Tammy Barton; stepdaughter and spouse, Merri and Marion England, Meeker; brother and sister-in-law, R.L. and Patricia Garza; Yukon; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice Morris, San Jose, Calif.; Irene and Virgil Burrows, Edmond; Stella Nance, Guthrie; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held until 9 a.m. Wednesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Meeker.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Meeker with the Rev. Cal Brannon officiating.

Burial will be in San Bois Cemetery in Kinta, Okla., under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.
