Earl Suggs

Earl Suggs, Tecumseh, died Friday in Tecumseh at the age of 96.

Suggs was born on Aug. 20, 1903, in Red River County, Texas, to James F. and Lillie Belle (Nicks) Suggs. He attended school in Paden and had lived in the Shawnee and Tecumseh area since 1942.

On March 17, 1984, he married Edna Davis in Tecumseh. During World War II, he worked for Douglas Aircraft of Oklahoma City.

He farmed for many years and worked for Tecumseh Public Schools for 17 years. He retired in May 1974. Suggs was a member of the Highland Church of Christ, Tecumseh Lodge Number 62 I.O.O.F. and the Tecumseh Lodge No. 69 A.F. and A.M., where he earned a 65-year pin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Homer and James Suggs; and sisters Dottie Rowden and Thelma Henley.

Survivors are his wife, Edna Suggs of the home; two daughters, Lena Mae Tucker of Carlsbad, N.M., and Earlene Cates of Roswell, N.M.; one stepdaughter, Rosa Brown of Tecumseh; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Bob Cates and Jim Tucker officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Corrine Huff

Corrine Huff of Chandler died Friday in Oklahoma City. She was 63.

Services are pending and will be announced by Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Chandler.

Geneva Hazel Wooten

Geneva Hazel Wooten of Haywood, Tenn., died Wednesday. She was 90.

She was born May 9, 1910, in Hillsboro, Texas, to Nancy Harrison and Frank McGee. She was married to William Marvin Wooten at Oklahoma City on Aug. 26, 1933.

Mrs. Wooten lived in Konawa from 1934 to 1962 and 1975 to 1988, and in Seminole from 1962 to 1970. She was a retired school teacher who taught primarily science in Saint Louis, Bowlegs, Maud, Ada, Konawa and Seminole school systems.

Mrs. Wooten received a bachelor of science in education from East Central University and a masters of education from The University of Oklahoma.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star Lodge of Konawa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, former Seminole County judge William Marvin Wooten and one son, William Waldo "Bill" Wooten.

Survivors include two sons, Dean Wooten, Beaver; the Rev. Marvin Wooten, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Marcia Hutchinson, Memphis, Tenn.; Valarie Hurst, Huntsville, Ala.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, officiated by Mike Vallandingham. Burial will follow at the Konawa Cemetery, under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home.

Jess W. Bishop

Jess W. Bishop of Tecumseh died Thursday in Shawnee. He was 80 years old.

He was born on April 12, 1920, in Sparks to Clarence Ray and Freancis (Kennett) Bishop. He was reared in Meeker, where he attended school. He had lived in Tecumseh since 1967, moving from Oklahoma City.

He married Zelphia Lee Simpson in Chandler in 1941 and she preceded him in death in 1989. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a truck driver for LeeWay Motor Freight. Bishop retired in 1976.

Bishop was a member of the Oklahoma City Masonic Lodge.

His parents and one brother, Raymond Bishop, also preceded him in death.

Survivors are one son, George Bishop of Fort Worth, Texas, and two sisters, Charlotte Scott, Del City, and Mavis Canada of Mustang.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in New Hope Cemetery of Meeker with the Rev. Randy Scott officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Wayne W. Cowden

Wayne W. Cowden of Tecumseh died Thursday in Tecumseh. He was 82.

Cowden was born in Indianola, Okla., June 13, 1918, to George W. and Millie (Everett) Cowden.

He attended school at Dale and lived in Tecumseh for the last 52 years. He married Mayme Judy Aug. 15, 1941, in Chandler. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army's Pacific Theater. He also worked for Shawnee Armature Works as an automotive electrician, retiring in 1985.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marie Jeffries, and brother George Cowden.

Survivors are his wife, Mayme of the home, one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ernest Yates of Tecumseh; one sister, Cecile Smith of Lubbock, Texas; two grandchildren and spouse, Pam and Neal Motley and Vickie Eagleston, all of Tecumseh, and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Dewayne Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Ruth Hooper

Ruth Hooper of Shawnee died Tuesday in her home. She was 85.

Mrs. Hooper was born Sept. 21, 1914, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Fred and Alma (Martin) Eddy. On March 15, 1935, she married Kermit Hooper in Fort Smith. She lived in Okmulgee from 1942 to 1965, when she moved to Shawnee.

She worked for Jack Brown Boutique for five years and attended University Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddy Lionel and Billie Ann Hooper of Oklahoma City; Kermit Doyle and Loretta Doris Hooper of Tucson, Ariz., three grandchildren, Debra Ann Mathe, Phoenix, Ariz.; Scott Quinn Hooper, Atlanta, Ga.; and Kevin Dirk Hooper, Norman. Two sisters, Juanita Renfrow of Charleston, Ark., and Eula Codding of Eugene, Ore., are also survivors.

Private graveside services were conducted Friday by the Rev. Bob Searl in Resthaven Memorial Park.

The family has designated University Baptist Church appropriate for memorials. Resthaven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Joe Brenden Pratt

Joe Brenden Pratt died Saturday in Stroud. He was 52.

Pratt was born Aug. 17, 1947, in Duncan, the son of Hal B. and Maggie Adell (Lahman) Pratt. He was a resident of Stroud for four years, moving from his previous home of Duncan.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as an insurance adjuster. He attended the Episcopal Church in Duncan and married Nancy Slaughter on Nov. 19, 1997, in Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1975.

Survivors include his wife of the home; mother, Maggie Adell Pratt of Stroud; two brothers, Hal B. Pratt of Oklahoma City and Keith N. Pratt of Lawrence, Kan.; and one sister, Ann A. Hart of Tulsa, among other friends and relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Stroud with the Rev. Randy Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in the Duncan Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with Father Dwight Helt officiating.

Vivian Opal Campbell Shaw

Vivian Opal Campbell Shaw of Norman died Friday in Norman. She was 96.

She was born Jan. 9, 1904, in Arapaho, Oklahoma Territory, to John L. and Nancy Jane (Edmondson) Campbell. She was reared in Clinton and moved to Norman in 1919.

She attended The University of Oklahoma and graduated in 1923 with a major in Spanish and French.

For a brief time, she taught both languages in Comanche and Sand Springs, but changed to the social work field, working in Oklahoma City for the Department of Public Welfare.

She married Murl Muir Shaw in 1929 and 10 years later, with their two daughters, they moved to Shawnee.

Upon moving to Shawnee, she was appointed executive secretary of the Pottawatomie County Chapter of the American Red Cross -- a position she held for 25 years. She was a deaconess and trustee in the Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for many years.

She also served as president of the American Association of University of Women in Shawnee.

She moved to Norman in 1997.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband in 1981 and one sister and one brothers.

Surviving are two daughters an sons-in-law, Barbara and J.R. Morris of Norman; Margaret and Jack McDermott of Shreveport, La., six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Dr. Robert S. Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to The University of Oklahoma Foundation for the Imogene McDermott scholarship fund or J.R. Morris Professorship in Psychology.

Rowena Mae Garrett

Maud resident Rowena Mae Garrett, 78, died Sunday at Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada.

The daughter of Fred and Millie (LeGand) Richardson was born in Enid on Nov. 17, 1922.

She worked as postmaster for the Maud Post Office until her 1987 retirement.

On Sept. 19, 1939, she married Ralph C. Garrett in Caldwell, Kan.

Garrett was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Maud.

Survivors include her husband of the home; daughter, Vicki Seeney; sons, Vernon Garrett and Jack Garrett; brother, Fred Richardson; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Maud. The Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate. Burial will be in Cummings Cemetery. Knight Funeral Home, Maud, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Emory Smith

Prague resident Charles Emory Smith died Sunday in his at the age of 94.

Born in Okfuskee County, Indian Territory, on Nov. 28, 1906, he was the son of George Riley and Frances Catherine (Walker) Smith. He had lived in the Prague area most of his life, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Prague.

In 1978, he retired after 16 years as a sexton at the Prague Cemetery.

On June 20, 1931, he married Helen Coleman in Micawber, Okla.

Smith was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 6, 2000, parents, three brothers, three sisters and one daughter, Mary Ann (Smith) Gregory.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Ruth Smith, Jerry and Sharon Smith, and Sam and Linda Smith, all of Prague; daughters and sons-in-law, Carley and Edwin Day of Great Bend, Kan., and Joyce and Gene Ellison, Frances and T.J. Simek, Sue and Deryle Schima and Mindy and Dan Calger, all of Prague; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Prague. The Rev. Tim Emmons will officiate. Burial will be in Prague Cemetery. Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Prague is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Prague First Baptist Church Building Fund.
