Joseph Lewis Hollis

Joseph Lewis Hollis, 83, of Cushing died Monday at a Tulsa hospital

He was born April 29, 1918, in Aydelotte, Okla., the son of Jesse Lewis and Ethel Jessi (Mathis) Hollis.

Hollis attended school at Pleasant Hill School District No. 8, at Aydelotte. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1978. He married Mary Josephine Honeycutt in Shawnee in 1947. He was a member of the Northslope Missionary Baptist Church in Davenport.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Hollis of Davenport; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Tommy Wilson of Shawnee; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Zelma Hollis of Shawnee; two sisters, Dorothy Harder of Del City and Virginia Page of Anaheim, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Bill Fay of Klamath Falls, Ore.; six grandchildren, Rhonda and Terrence Yazel of Greenwood, Ark, Jeff and Amy Ivey of Greenwood and Alisha and Michael Ballard of Van Buren, Ark.; and four great-grandchildren.

A service was held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Park Place Baptist Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Tony Black and the Rev. Jeff Ivey officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery, Shawnee.

Arrangements were handled by Palmer Funeral Home of Cushing.

Patsy N. Troxell

Patsy N. Troxell, 69, of Shawnee died Saturday at her home.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home.

Dr. Jimmie Louise Russell

Dr. Jimmie Louise Russell of Shawnee died Sunday in Midwest City. She was 52.

She was born Nov. 13, 1949, in Houston, Texas, to Malcolm Alvin Smith and Lena Mae (Marks) Smith. She attended Springwood High School in Houston, Texas. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Houston, her master's from Texas A&M Commerce and her doctorate from Oklahoma State University.

She married Norris Russell on Feb. 12, 1972, in Houston, Texas.

She was a professor of elementary education, with a specialty in reading. She came to Oklahoma Baptist University in 1981.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Higher Education Reading Association, International Reading Association and the Oklahoma Education Association. She was a member of University Baptist Church.

Other activities and honors include Parent University, Southwest Region of Oklahoma Education Association, "Friends of Education" Award for 2001 and the OBU Distinguished Teacher Award in 2001. She was organizer of the "America Reads" in Shawnee. She started the Reading and Math Clinic at OBU, as well as OBU Global Options.

Surviving are her husband, Norris Russell, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Amy Russell of Lamesa, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Meredith and Chris Hines of Shawnee; parents, Malcolm and Lena Smith of Livingston, Texas; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sheryn Major of Houston and Frankie and Paul Chavis, Point Blank, Texas; and seven nieces and nephews.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. today at Raley Chapel on the OBU campus with Dr. Bob Searl officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Those wishing may make contributions to the Dr. Jimmie L. Russell Memorial Scholarship Fund, 500 W. University, Shawnee, OK 74804.

Kathryn Scheidt Carter

Kathryn Scheidt Carter, 67, of Tecumseh died Saturday in Tecumseh.

She was born Jan. 14, 1935, in Shawnee, the daughter of J.G. Scheidt Sr. and Cecile Lorene Willis Scheidt.

Carter lived in Tecumseh for most of her life. She attended Barnard and Willard Elementary Schools, Tecumseh Junior High and Tecumseh High School. She studied for one year at Oklahoma Baptist University, and in 1962 she received her bachelor's degree in history and government from the University of Oklahoma.

She married Glenn Dale Carter in Tecumseh on Sept. 10, 1960. She was a retired legal secretary and a historian and genealogist. She was the staff organist at Cooper Funeral Home for more than 30 years.

Carter wrote and compiled numerous history and genealogy books, including two volumes on the earliest days of the city of Tecumseh. She and her husband were named Citizens of the Year by the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce in fall 2001.

Carter was a member of the First Christian Church of Shawnee, where she played the organ and sang in the choir for many years. She also was a member of the Tecumseh Cemetery Advisory Board for more than 15 years, the Tecumseh Historical Society and the Tecumseh Genealogy Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Cecile Scheidt, and a sister, Gloria LaRue.

Surviving are her husband, Glenn Dale Carter, of the home; a daughter, Mary Cecile Carter of Dallas, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Phyllis Scheidt of Shawnee; nieces, Cathy Scheidt of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Pamela Eslicker of Tulsa; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Glorene and Paul Wolfe of Throckmorton, Texas; three cousins, Judy, Richard and Jason Spencer of Tecumseh; and many friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Shawnee. Officiating will be Dr. James Sill and Milo Steffen II of First Christian Church and Dr. William H. Bentley of Broadway United Methodist Church of Tecumseh. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

The family will receive visitors at Cooper Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

The family has designated the Tecumseh Historical Society as appropriate for memorials. Its address is 619 N. Broadway, Tecumseh, OK 74873.

Larry Keith Schoemann

Shawnee resident Larry Keith Schoemann, 62, died Friday in Oklahoma City.

He was born Feb. 3, 1940, in Concho, Okla., the son of D.W. and Frances (Forrester) Schoemann.

He was reared in Wanette and also lived in Missouri, Georgia, San Antonio, Kansas, Germany, El Paso and Maryland. He lived in Norman for seven years and Shawnee since 1998.

He was a graduate of Wanette High School and received an associate degree in business from El Paso Community College, a bachelors degree in management from Columbia College and a master's degree in management from the University of Oklahoma.

He married Cathy Reeves in Wanette on Jan. 23, 1988.

Schoemann retired from the U.S. Army in 1992 with the rank of Sergeant Major and retired as an administrator from the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs in 1999.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served in Korea. During his military career, he also served in the NCOIC Emergency Room at Fort Leonard, Wood, Mo., and attended clinical specialist school at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and served as an instructor for Special Forces Medics.

He later was NCOIC of the prison ward in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and served in Vietnam as a combat medic. Schoemann was the senior medical NCO at the 33rd Field Hospital in Germany.

Schoemann was active duty adviser for training of Army reserves with the 81st Army Reserve Command in Atlanta, Ga.

He earned the rank of sergeant major at Fort Bliss, Texas and served in that capacity at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, for Professional Services 7th Medical Command in Europe, Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston and Health Services Command.

He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Combat Medical Badge, Bronze Star for Valor, Army Commendation Medal, two Purple Hearts, four Meritorious Service medals, Air Medal with 13 clusters, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Valorous Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Campaign medal with three battle stars and was selected to Order of Military Order of Medical Merit for significant contributions in the field of combat medicine.

He was a member of the Methodist faith, the American Legion, a life member of AMVET, DAV, VFW, Military Order of Purple Hearts and former Honorary Sgt. Major Medical Brigade and was a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Tribe.

Schoemann was preceded in death by his father, D.W. Schoemann; grandson, Alex Larkey; and first wife, Lee Schoemann.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy Schoemann of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and Mike Reagin of Easton, Pa; Lori and Kevin O'Brien of Moore and Kelly and Troy Long of Gage; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bryan Richards of Wanette and David and Carol Richards of Tahlequah; mother and stepfather, Frances and Gene Cossey of Tecumseh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria and Bill Shallcross and Rebecca and David Cryer, all of Norman; a brother and sister-in-law, Dee and Toni Schoemann of Bixby; mother-in-law, Leona Lewis of Shawnee; 10 grandchildren; and many friends and family.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wanette United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cooper Chapel of Wanette.

Louise Ross

Former Shawnee resident Louise Ross, 89, of Oklahoma City died Friday at her residence.

She was born May 28, 1912, in Smerna, Ga., the daughter of George Fletcher Northcutt and Aldora Gertrude (Groce) Northcutt.

She was reared in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School.

Ross was a statistician working first at the Indian Hospital of Shawnee and later for several government agencies at Fort Reno, Okla., for nearly the duration at World War II.

In 1942, she married David S. Ross in Shawnee.

Ross lived in Shawnee for 30 years prior to moving to Oklahoma City.

She was a member of the May Avenue Methodist Church of Oklahoma City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Christine Cope and Evelyn Childers; two brothers, George Northcutt and Fletcher Northcutt; and her husband.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Brenda Ross of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Mary Cramer and sister-in-law, Annette Northcutt, both of Great Falls, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Irene Potts officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to May Avenue United Methodist Church, 2604 N. May, Oklahoma City.

Adele A. Manning

Adele A. Manning died Thursday in Stroud. Services are pending and will be announced at a later time by Parks Funeral Service, Stroud.

W.F. Griggs

W.F. Griggs, 81, died Wednesday in Cushing. Services are pending and will be announced at a later date by Parks Funeral Service, Stroud.

Ray Adren Eaton

Ray Adren Eaton, 99, died Thursday in Stroud.

Survivors include a son, Keith Eaton of Stroud; two daughters, Gloria L. Colclasure of Oklahoma City and Joy R. Loth of Houston; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Service chapel in Stroud with Dr. Burl Mackey officiating. Burial will follow in the Stroud Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Parks Brothers Funeral Service.

Evelyn Bird

Evelyn Bird, 77, of Shawnee died Thursday at a local hospital.

Survivors include her sister Roberta Gentry of Shawnee; and two brothers, Charlie Pitts of Tecumseh and Doyle Pitts of Macomb.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sam Hendry officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery, Little, Okla.

Nellie Miller

Nellie Miller, 88, of Chandler died Sunday at her home.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-laws, Bob and Fleta Miller of Gilbert, Ariz., and Gary and Judi Miller of Davenport, Okla.; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Marlene and Wayne Routh of Chandler, Sharon and Franklin Stewart of Wellston, Okla., and Imogene and Bill Wade of Gainsville, Ga.; two brothers, Ocie Day of Chandler and Rennie Day of Fresno, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler with the Rev. Bruce Newby officiating, under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler.

Harold Keisling

Harold Keisling, 73, Tecumseh, died Sunday in Tecumseh.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Tecumseh with Dr. Tim Walker officiating. Other information is pending with Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
