Juanita (Columbus) Heatley

Juanita (Columbus) Heatley of Shawnee died Monday at the age of 71.

She was born Jan. 24, 1930, in Minnesota, the daughter of Marcello Corona and Josephine Columbus and had lived in Shawnee most of her life.

She married Roy Lee Heatley in Shawnee on Sept. 2, 1950, and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Raymond Corona, and a sister, Eloise Arechiga.

Surviving are her husband, Roy "Bear" Heatley of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Rick Brown, Midwest City; Nancy and Jane Beckham, Tecumseh; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Patti Heatley, Henry and Sherry Heatley, Abraham and Cheryl Heatley, Michael and Tracy Heatley and Roy Heatley Jr., all of Shawnee; and Tom and Joann Heatley, Tecumseh; sister and brother-in-law, Toni and Edward English, Tecumseh; sister, Ruby Woods, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, George and Doris Columbus, Shawnee; brother, Jerry Corona, Seminole; aunt, Carmel Columbus, Shawnee; 28 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Chapel of Tecumseh with Bartus Barnhill and Chris Brown officiating. Burial will be at Little Cemetery.

Helen Marie Roulston

Services for Helen Marie Roulston, Moore, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pickard Chapel with the Rev. Lonnie Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in Vamoosa Cemetery.

Mrs. Roulston was born Feb. 21, 1918, to Ed and Lucy Gaines.

She was a homemaker who lived in the Konawa area until 1978 when she moved to Oklahoma City. She lived in Oklahoma City until her death Saturday.

She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Henry "Red" Hailey in 1939 and her second husband, Joe Riley Roulston Sr. in 1976, five brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include five sons, Edward Hailey, Oklahoma City, Charles D. Hailey, Oklahoma City, Herbert Hailey, Oklahoma City, Joe R. Roulston, Lehigh, Okla., Jay L. Roulston, Oklahoma City; one daughter, Loretta M. Cole; 29 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jessie Marie Mariott

Graveside services for Jessie Marie Mariott, 79, will be 11 a.m. today at the Jones I.O.O. F. Cemetery, Jones. She died Sunday.

Mariott was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Alva to James and Pearl (Howery) Langley.

Mariott retired as a registered nurse. She also ran a nursery from her home for several years and was a member of The Salvation Army.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and one sister.

Mariott is survived by one son Butch Mariott; three stepdaughters, Donna Rhodes and family, Alva, Betty Rhodes and family, Alva, and Dorothy Miller and family, Jones; one sister, Bonnie Barton, Purcell; three nieces, Sue Davis, Piedmont, Betty Ring, Collinsville, and Donna Webb, Harrah; and many other family members and friends.

Asa Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

John Harlin Slavens II

John Harlin Slavens II died Wednesday in Norman. He was 40.

He was born April 15, 1959, in Landstuhl, Germany.

He grew up and graduated high school in the Jacksonville, Ill., area. He moved to Oklahoma with his parents in 1980. He briefly attended the University of Oklahoma, but soon moved to Big Sur, Calif., where he worked and lived at Esalen Institute for many years.

In 1992, he returned to Norman, where he completed his bachelor of arts degree. He graduated from OU in 1996.

A student of gourmet cooking, he was instrumental in the formation of the Norman Brunch Bunch.

Survivors include his parents, John and Gloria Slavens, Shawnee; brother, Robert, Long Beach, Calif.; and aunts, Hope Hunnicutt and Isabel Ford, Illinois.

His paternal and maternal grandparents, Robert and Lola Slavens and George and Roberta Cummings, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. A private burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Shawnee.

Memorials may be made to Russell Murray Hospice, 221 S. Bickford, El Reno, Okla. 73036, or RAIN, 1601 N. Drexel Blvd., Oklahoma City, Okla. 73107.

Jess O. Morgan

Jess O. Morgan died Tuesday in a local hospital. The former Blackwell resident was 86.

Jess Omega Morgan was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Oakwood, Dewey County, to Frank and Mary (Reisch) Morgan. He grew up in the Oakwood area before moving to the Three Sands area, where he attended rural schools.

Following his schooling, he began working on a farm.

He married Eulalia Jaunita Plumlee Oct. 31, 1936, in Anthony, Kan., and they settled on a farm east of Tonkawa.

In 1936, he began hauling ice for the Blackwell Ice Plant, and he eventually moved to Blackwell in 1942 due to the gas shortage during World War II.

After hauling ice for 12 years, he began working for the Blackwell Zinc Co. in 1948 as a refiner and continued working there until his retirement in 1972. Then, he moved to Arizona for a few years.

In 1979, he moved to Ponca City and lived there until 1981, when he and his wife returned to Blackwell. In 1998, they moved to Shawnee to be near family.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell since 1942.

Survivors include his wife, Eulalia Morgan, Shawnee; daughter, Sandy Roark, Shawnee; son, Richard Morgan, Midwest City; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Walter Morgan; sisters, Lucille Randolph, Leona Randolph and Gladys Crimble; and brothers, George, Ralph and Earl Morgan.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church, Blackwell, with the Rev. Rick Longcrier and Dr. Mack Roark of OBU officiating. Burial will be in Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home, Blackwell.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1st and Bridge, Blackwell, Okla. 74631.

Thomas William van Ess

Thomas William van Ess of Wytheville, Va., died Monday in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was 79.

He was born Oct. 22, 1919, in San Francisco, Calif., to Thomas William van Ess Sr. and Rachael MacGowen van Ess.

Van Ess lived his first 11 years in Pukchin, North Korea, where his father was the manager of a gold mining company. Following graduation from Pacific Grove High School in California, he attended St. Albans in Washington, D.C., and studied organ at Washington Cathedral.

Later he attended Pomona and Colorado Colleges and studied organ. Van Ess completed work for a doctorate in Spanish at New York University. He obtained the AAGO in organ and theory at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

He lived six years in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he worked as a Spanish-English translator in the military attache's office in the American Embassy. He was active in music as associate director and accompanist of the British-American Mixed Chorus.

He married Mary Eula Wrany Jan. 18, 1947, at St. Saviour's in Argentina. They lived in New York City for 27 years.

For 14 years, van Ess was an instructor of Spanish at Pace College in New York City and Pleasantville, N.Y., and served as organist-choir director for a number of churches, including Riverdale Presbyterian Church at Riverdale-on-Hudson, N.Y., from 1948 to 1961. He performed organ recitals and was a professional accompanist.

Southern Music Publishing Co. published more than 50 song lyrics van Ess translated from Spanish to English. He prepared a Spanish translation of the Lectionary and Liturgy for the United Presbyterian Church of the U.S.; it was published in 1965. Crowell-Collier published "Basic Facts of Spanish," a book van Ess prepared.

In 1974, van Ess and his wife moved from New York to Wytheville, Va., to manage Econo Lodge. They retired in 1981. Van Ess was an organist and choir director at St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville for 10 years until 1988, completing 50 years as a church musician.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Wrany van Ess, and his sister, Lee Louise Williams, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Graveside memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Memory Lane Cemetery, Harrah. Barnett Funeral Home of Wytheville, Va., and Asa Smith Funeral Service in Harrah are in charge of services.

Earl Wayne Neel

Earl Wayne Neel died Wednesday at his home. He was 62.

He was born on Jan. 4, 1937, in Seminole to Wayne W. Neel and Pearl Violet (Stutz) Neel. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1955.

He married Julia Margaret Peschl on Oct. 26, 1958, in Oklahoma City.

He was an office clerk for Rock Island Railroad working 25 years and he worked eight years for Katy Railroad and seven years for Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1996. He was also a rancher.

He was a member of the Twin Oak Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and a men's Sunday school class teacher for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Neel, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and LaDonna Neel of Seminole; daughters, Winona "Diane" Neel and Theresa Ann Neel, both of the home; one sister, Juanita Jean Cumpton of Seminole and twin granddaughters, Ashley and Kristen Neel of Seminole.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Twin Oak Baptist Church in Seminole with the Rev. Bill Servati officiating. Burial will be at Little Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Twin Oak Baptist Church, Route 3 Box 77A, Seminole, Ok. 74868.

B.C. Cockrum

Barren Charles Cockrum died Wednesday in Stroud. He was 83.

He was born March 6, 1916, in Perry. He was the son of Charles and Mary (Tontz) Cockrum. He was a resident of Stroud since 1945.

He retired from Sun Oil Company and he was a rancher and oil and gas producer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Stroud, a member of the Stroud school board for 15 years and a member of the Masonic Lodge 142 for 55 years.

He married Juanita Sybil Jones in Stillwater on May 13, 1938.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one grandchild.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita, of the home, three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Charles and Jean Cockrum of Guthrie; Duane Gary and Jane Cockrum of Yukon and Jeffrey Lynn and Susan Cockrum of Stroud; one daughter, Patricia Ann and Frank Niccum of Stroud; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Lorren and Lorene Cockrum of Perry; Alvin and Dorothy Cockrum of Perry; Melton and Josephine Cockrum of Georgetown, Texas; George and Marjorie Cockrum of Del City and J.E. and Laverne Cockrum of Altoona, Kan.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine Pryor of Stratford, Lenora and Oakley Price of Ponca City; Marietta and Leo Moran of Broken Arrow and Grace and Clarence McKee of Lucien; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Stroud with the Rev. Kathy Leithner and the Rev. Burl Mackey officiating. Burial will be in the Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Eva Cox

Eva Cox died Wednesday in Prague. She was 92.

She was born Aug. 29, 1906, in Waynesboro, Tenn. She was the daughter of Frank and Frances (Galloway) Cox.

She moved to the Garden Grove Community in Pottawatomie County at the age of 3 years where she lived most of her life. She was a member of the Johnson Church of God.

She spent her life working on the farm. She never married but helped raise her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Edith Cox and Ethel States and a nephew, Robert Olen States.

Survivors include four nephews and their wives, Thomas Roy States Jr., Jonesboro, Ark.; Bill and Oleta States, Prague; Alan and Alma States, Prague, and Edward and Esta States, Shawnee; three nieces and their husbands, Mildred Juanita States, Prague; Muriel and Vence Mlynek, Prague, and June and Wilbur Smith, Choctaw; several great-nieces and great-nephews and many cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with the Rev. Charles Higgins officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden Grove Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral in Prague.
