Don Ray Harper
Don Ray Harper, 73, Milford, Texas, died Monday in Temple, Texas.

He was born Jan. 6, 1930, in Shawnee, to Estelle Mae (Duffield) and Wendell Ray Harper.

He married Bessie June Wells on Jan 13, 1973, in Shawnee.

Harper served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

He later worked for the Shawnee Fire and Rescue Department, where he retired as fire captain in 1975 and moved to Milford.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Jim Harper; and a sister, Doris Bickerstaff.

Survivors include three daughters, Regina G. Alley, Tecumseh, Theresa A. Skelly and husband Kenneth, Shawnee, and Donna L. Harper, Tecumseh; sons, William Ray Harper, Tulsa, and Mike Paul Harper, Shawnee; brother, Murl Harper of Tulsa; sister, Mary Toler, Tulsa; grandchildren Sylvester Alley, Emily Chance Riddle; Courtney, April, Travis and Shawn Skelly; and Adria Flood-Fields; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Boze Mitchell McKibbin Chapel in Italy, Texas. Burial will follow at the Milford Cemetery.

Visitation will be today at the Boze Mitchell McKibbin Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Heart, Whitney, Texas, or Vista Care, Temple, Texas.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home.

Dorothy Hasbell
Dorothy Hasbell, 57, Chandler, died Monday at a Shawnee Hospital. Services are pending with Resthaven Funeral Home, Shawnee.

George Edmund Gauthier
George Edmund Gauthier, 55 of Midwest City died Friday.

Survivors include his father, Lawrence Gauthier of Yarmouth, Maine; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James L. and Shannon Gauthier of Choctaw and Brian J. Gauthier of Del City; two daughters and one son-in-law, Christy A. and Scott Davis of Del City and Kathleen C. Gauthier of Edmond; one brother, Billy Gauthier of Vernon, Texas; one sister, Susie Gauthier of Yarmouth; four grandchildren; and other friends and family.

Visitation for family and friends will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Asa Smith Memorial Chapel, Harrah.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rose State College Communications Center with the Rev. Randy Pratt officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Dale Cemetery under the direction of Smith-Parks Funeral Service in Harrah.

Tony Gibson
Tony Gibson, 70, of Konawa died Sunday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gibson of the home; seven sons, Glenn Gibson of Ada, Edward Cedartree of Tulsa, Cornelius Cedartree of Oklahoma City and Tommy Gibson, Anthony Gibson, Scott Gibson and Colt Gibson, all of Konawa; four daughters, Marsha Motley of Konawa, Tonette Porter of Ada, Ellen Ward of Prague and Bridget Ellis of Prague; two brothers, Mark Gibson of Okemah and Roman Harjo of Byng; three sisters, Cynthia Cooper of Castle, JoAnn Story of Ada and Christine Gibson of Konawa; one brother-in-law, James Yarbrough; two sisters-in-law, Edith Harjo of Meeker and Louise Harjo of Konawa; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at High Springs Indian Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed George and the Rev. Issac Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Laura E. Crouch

Dr. Laura E. Crouch, Oklahoma Baptist University professor, died Monday at her home in Shawnee following an extended illness. She was 52.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Raley Chapel on the OBU campus with the Rev. Bob Searl officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Bartlesville, with the Rev. Tom Cole of Norman officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Chapel.

Laura Crouch was born in Bartlesville on July 24, 1946, the daughter of Willie W. and Junie (Knape) Crouch. She received a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa.

She was selected Matrix Table Outstanding Senior Woman in 1968. She earned a master of arts from the University of Texas in 1970 and a doctor of philosophy in English literature from OU in 1975.

Dr. Crouch moved to Shawnee in 1975 when she accepted a teaching position at OBU. She was appointed associate professor of English in 1982 and professor in 1988. She served as chairman of the Western Civilization Studies Program from 1976 to 1979, chairman of the Department of English from 1979 to 1982, and chairman of the Division of Language and Literature from 1985 until December 1998.

Her professional responsibilities at OBU included serving as editor of the Institutional Report for North Central Accreditation in 1987 and 1997, editor of the Institutional Report for NCATE Accreditation, and editor of the Faculty Handbook. She also presented papers at many regional and national conferences.

Dr. Crouch was honored with OBU's Outstanding Teaching Award in 1991 and the Meritorious Service Award in 1998.

She was active with "Let's Talk About It, Oklahoma" reading and discussion program since 1985 and gave nearly two dozen programs at libraries statewide. She served on the board of directors of the organization and was an officer of South Central Society for Eighteenth Century Studies.

She was a member of University Baptist Church.

Her father, Dr. Willie W. Crouch, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her mother, Junie L. Crouch, Bartlesville; a sister, Junie C. Janzen, Shawnee; a niece, a nephew and many others.

Mrs. Max R. (Mabel) Lupton

Mrs. Max R. (Mabel) Lupton, Shawnee, died Sunday in a local nursing home at the age of 96.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rusty Williams officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 17, 1902, in Hobart, Indian Territory, to George Edward and Rachel Lucinda (Harsen) Blain. She had grown up in Van Buren, Ark., and married Max R. Lupton in Poteau on Oct. 7, 1919.

They moved to Shawnee in 1919 and owned and operated Lupton Paint Store from 1947 to 1965. After retirement, they joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and worked in San Antonio, Texas, for two years teaching English and trade skills to Mexican Americans.

Mrs. Lupton was a member of Draper Street Methodist Church for many years and taught Sunday school and was active in Methodist Women organizations. She later was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1991; her parents; four brothers; one sister; two sons, Raymond and Morris Lupton; a daughter, Audrie Grandacolis, and a grandson, Michael Welch.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Donal and Janice Lupton, Midwest City; Allen and Mavis Lupton, Sam and Merroll Lupton, Warren and Judith Lupton, all of Shawnee; Bob and Wilma Lupton, Moore; Daniel and Thelma Lupton, Baton Rouge, La.; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Ed Allee, Houston, Texas; Deloris and Eugene McConnell, Fullerton, Calif.; 39 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Lonsbury, Van Buren, Ark., and many other relatives.

Sarah Smith

Former Dale resident Sarah Smith died Monday in Detroit, Mich. She was 85.

She and her husband, Cecil Smith, returned to Warren, Mich., in 1991 and he preceded her in death in March 1993.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Annette Smith, North Carolina; daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Loyd Thresher, Shawnee; Shirley and Don Kolosick, Sterling Heights, Mich.; Margaret and Earl Noble, Sugarland, Texas; JoAnn and Johnny Lonesky, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Mich., with the Rev. Jim Beal officiating.

Maxine Abel Moore

Longtime Shawnee resident Maxine Abel Moore, 65, died Monday in a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Utsler officiating, assisted by the Rev. Richards Stillwell. Burial will be at Little Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Maxine Abel was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Seminole County, the daughter of Jesse and Della (Barnes) Abel. She attended Prairie Valley Schools and had lived in the Shawnee area most of her life.

She married Jerry W. Moore on June 8, 1952, at Fairview Baptist Church of Earlsboro. She retired as a bank teller after more than 30 years of service. She was a member of Fairview Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Betty Yvonne Abel; brother, Adrian Abel; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Elsie Moore, and sister-in-law, Corrine Woody.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Moore, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sally and Michael Odom, Kathy and Gale Shropshire, all of Shawnee; Sue and Brad Moore, Dallas, Texas; Lisa and Stormy Sims, Norman; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, O.K. and Wanda Abel, Shawnee; Jesse and Leta Abel, Odessa, Texas; Nadine Abel, Shawnee; brother-in-law, Don Woody, Snyder, and many other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Fairview Baptist Church building fund or Hospice of Shawnee.

Florence Sophia Nelson

Longtime Seminole teacher Florence Sophia Nelson of Lawton died Sunday after a sudden illness. She was 97.

She was born Jan. 15, 1902, in Sanger, Texas, to Seth Spencer and Janetta K. (Matthews) Moore. The family moved to Tishomingo in 1904 and she was raised there.

She graduated from high school with a two-year teaching certificate in 1921. She married Leonard F. "Lynn" Nelson in Atoka in January 1927. He preceded her in death in 1979.

She received her master's degree in education from the University of Oklahoma in 1942 and did post graduate work at the University of Southern California.

She had taught in many Oklahoma towns, including Milburn, Carr City and Miami. She taught 10th-grade English at Seminole High School for 23 years and retired in 1966 after 45 years of teaching.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Seminole and was involved in Seminole County Retired Teachers Association, General Federated Women's Clubs, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Order of the Eastern Star. She moved to Lawton in 1996.

Survivors include her nieces and their spouses, Jerry Sue (Marshall) and Larry Sellars, Lawton; Janet (Marshall) and Sam Stathos, Oklahoma City; Evelyn Moore, Norman; Mary Ann Rowe, Tulsa; nephews, Jack Moore, San Diego, Calif.; Charles Ray, Seminole, Texas; Bill Ray, Houston, Texas, and many other relatives.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Seminole, with the Rev. Dr. Kelvin Moseley officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be 3:30 p.m. at Tishomingo City Cemetery with the Rev. James Watson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Edith Bell Wallis

Services for Edith Bell Wallis, 95, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Okemah, with the Rev. Charles Jones officiating. Burial will be in Schoolton Cemetery.

She died Monday at a local nursing home.

She was born on April 29, 1903, in Asher to Frank and Lola Burrsaw Butler. She married Richard E. Wallis on Jan. 26, 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of the Cromwell Pentecostal Holiness Church. She lived in Cromwell many years before moving to McLoud in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her husband, on May 29, 1986, and a stepson, Bobby Wallis.

Survivors include stepson Boyd Wallis, Oklahoma City; two stepdaughters, Nona Dennis, Eufaula, and Laverne Carr, McAlester; 13 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

Henry C. Brown

Shawnee resident Henry C. "Cliff" Brown died Saturday at a local nursing home. He was 93.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore and the Rev. Sam Hendry officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Brown was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Quanah, Texas, to James Franklin and James Edward (Higgenbotham) Brown. He married Thelma Blakely. After her death, he married Merle Attebery.

He attended schools in Yale and was a house painter and paper hanger. He also worked for Shawnee Gas Company. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Merle Brown, Shawnee; step-daughter and her spouse, Relleen and Kamran Firooz, Colorado; two granddaughters, Karen Whitlow and Dianna Brown; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; sister, Nell Folks; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marvin and Lucille Attebery; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Blakely; one son, Richard L. Brown; two step-sons, Donald L. and Marvin E. Robberson; three sisters and three brothers.

Marvin Edward Hamm

Former area pastor the Rev. Marvin Edward Hamm of Willow Springs, Mo., died Thursday. He was 76.

He was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Okarche, the son of Martin Arthur and Mamie Colson Hamm.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II in the European Theater of Operations in Company C 3rd Tank Battalion, 10th Armored "Tiger" Division, under Gen. George Patton. Hamm drove a tank and participated in the Rhineland Campaign. He was wounded in action near Saarbrucken, Germany, on Nov. 21, 1944, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also received medals for Good Conduct, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, World War II Victory, Army of Occupation with Germany Clasp and an Honorable Service World War II lapel button.

After military service, the Rev. Hamm entered the ministry of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and was pastor of churches in Durant, Ada, Seminole, Wagoner and Okmulgee in Oklahoma; Coffeyville, Kan.; Lawndale and Fremont, Calif., and Mountain Grove, Mo. He also served as youth director and assistant conference superintendent with the Pentecostal Holiness organization and conducted revivals and camp meetings across the United States.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Luther M. Hamm, and sister, Dorothy D. Young.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian J. Hamm, Willow Springs, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Marvenea and Paul Rainwater, Oklahoma City; daughter, Wanda J. Hamm, Oklahoma City; son, Edward L. Hamm, Toluca Lake, Calif.; grandchildren and their spouses, Paul Allen III and Lennie Rainwater, Las Cruces, N.M.; Robyn Leigh and Greg Pollard, Stillwater; a great-granddaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Alonzo Gaubert, Piedmont; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lilian Hamm, South Gate, Calif., and many other relatives.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hahn-Cook-Street and Draper Funeral Home, Oklahoma City. Burial will be at Matheson Cemetery, Piedmont.
