Marjorie Shearer

Former Shawnee resident Marjorie Shearer died Wednesday in Dodge City, Kan. She was 78.

She was born April 1, 1921, in Shawnee to Sam Norton Jr. and E. Jane Barnhart.

She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1937, and attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. She graduated from Oklahoma University in 1941 with a degree in business and accounting.

She married Louis Abner Brown in 1941, and he preceded her in death. She married R. Harold Shearer on March 27, 1952, in Shawnee. After their marriage, they lived in Wichita until moving to Dodge City in 1964. They owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store in Dodge City for many years. Harold Shearer preceded her in death on May 30, 1996.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dodge City, and the Atheneum Club of Dodge City. She was also a member of Phi Beta Psi Chapter Zeta Lambda of Dodge City.

Also preceded in death by one brother, Sam Norton III.

Surviving are two sons, John Shearer of Manhattan, Kan.; Jack Shearer of Dodge City, Kan.; a daughter, Melanie Schulze of New Braunfels, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. A private burial will be held at Scroggins Memorial Mausoleum in Dodge City.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lois G. Wise

Former Meeker resident Lois G. Wise died Saturday in Concord, Calif. She was 71.

She was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Oklahoma to Ira and Clementine (Ledford) Nard. She was a resident of Contra Costa County, Calif., for the last 14 years.

She married Efured Alton Wise, who preceded her in death on July 10, 1983, and she was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald Wise of Concord, Calif.; Jim Wise of Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one sister.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the New Hope Cemetery in Meeker. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.

Mary Ida Hightower

Slaughterville resident Mary Ida Hightower died Wednesday at her home. She was 105.

Mrs. Hightower was born July 8, 1893, in Kyana, Ind., to John William Parker and Catherine (Bath) Parker. She married Walter Lee Hightower on Oct. 29, 1916.

She moved with her family to the Stealey Ranch Community near Purcell when she was 10 and had also lived east of Lexington and in Oklahoma City.

She was a school teacher for a few years and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William E. Hightower, Lexington; Hubert A. Hightower, Oklahoma City; two daughters, Hazel Croy, Oklahoma City; Ellen Beeson, McLoud; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Parker; husband, Walter Lee Hightower; son, Wallace L. Hightower; daughter, Mary Catherine Ramsey; and two grandsons, Melvin Croy and Doyle Ramsey.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell with Rick Woods officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

Dwain Davis

Tecumseh resident Dwain Davis died March 25 in Tecumseh. He was 90.

Services were held Thursday at Brown Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Chapel.

Davis was born Jan. 16, 1909, in West Plaines, Mo. to Shannon and Amanda (Loy) Davis. He married Essie Davis on May 12, 1995.

He worked as a seismograph drill truck operator and lived in Kansas, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. He also owned and operated a barber shop in Cushing and had lived in Tecumseh for more than 10 years.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Geneva Davis, Tecumseh, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, on Oct. 14, 1998; five brothers and three sisters.

Claudine Loyce Whitt

Longtime Meeker area resident Claudine Loyce Whitt died Thursday in Shawnee. She was 73.

Mrs. Whitt was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Blair to George E. and Emma Mae (Owen) Turner. She worked in the Lincoln County Court Clerk's office and then for the Kerr-McGee Oil Co. as a senior accountant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Meeker.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Newman, Meeker; daughter and son-in-law, Dinah and Michael Bolich, Moore; grandchildren, Cristy and Shawn Streater and Michael Degman; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Streater and Coalmin Degman; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gene Turner.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Meeker with the Rev. Jackie Owen and Rev. Michael Hamm officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery, Meeker, under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler. Viewing will be at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Meeker.

Connie Sisson

Prague resident Connie Sisson died Sunday. She was 38.

Mrs. Sisson was born Aug. 6, 1960, to Thomas Webb and Myrtle Robison.

Survivors include her sons, Keith, Kevin and Kenneth Witt; and family friend, Cathy Gwin.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Paden Cemetery.

Bertha M. Hamilton

Shawnee resident Bertha M. Hamilton died Friday at a local nursing home. She was 97.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, Duncan, with Randy Southerland officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Comanche.

Mrs. Hamilton was born July 25, 1901, in Delonegah, Ga., to James and Maggie Jane Adams (Wilson) Rodusky. She married Robert Roscoe Hamilton on Feb. 16, 1929, in Stephens County, Okla.

She lived in Duncan from 1903 to 1941 and then lived in Oklahoma City until the early 1990s. She was a homemaker and longtime member of the Duncan Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church, Oklahoma City.

Survivors include her nephew, Dale Hamilton, Tecumseh; three nieces, June Burns, Krum, Texas; Lavern Stafford, Temecula, Calif.; Judy Swartz, Mission, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, on Jan. 24, 1997; her parents, seven sisters and one brother.

Avery Milstead

Shawnee resident Avery Milstead died Wednesday at a local nursing home. He was 91.

Milstead was born May 6, 1907, in McKinney, Texas, to Thomas Acre and Frances Mae (Tallant) Milstead. He married Leonora Ehrlich on July 27, 1934.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Herman S. Green

Longtime Shawnee businessman Herman S. Green died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 85.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Brad Reimers will officiate.

Herman S. Green was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Meeker to Birt and Maggie (Boland) Green. He attended Hagar school and had lived in Shawnee all his life.

He married Thelma Lorene Bradbury in Shawnee on Sept. 15, 1934, and owned and operated Green's Furniture and Antiques on East Main Street for 40 years. He retired in 1992.

He was a member of Aydelotte Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Thelma Green, of the home; son, Ronald Green, Harrah; daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Carl Nicely, Kathy and Dennis Enright, all of Shawnee; grandchildren, Ronald Nicely, Terri Luman, Jennifer Rimer, Jason Enright, all of Shawnee; Tim Green, Oklahoma City; Cindy Robertson, Newalla; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Moore, Shawnee; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eldon and Doris Whittern, Joe and Phyllis Scheidt, all of Shawnee; Delcie Green and Wanda Green, both of California.

Kathryn E. Walker

Kathryn E. Walker died Tuesday at her Shawnee home. She was 85.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. Jerry States will officiate.

She was born March 16, 1913, in Wichita, Kan., to Osborne and Floreene (Tucker) Cole. She graduated from high school in Oklahoma City and attended nursing school at Mercy Hospital.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Florida and Georgia for many years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Cole, Shawnee.

Memorials may be made to Seventh Day Adventist Church, 430 N. Center, Shawnee OK 74801.

Susie Jane Scott

Susie Jane Scott died Tuesday at a Henryetta nursing home. She was 91.

She was born Jan. 23, 1908, in Bryant, the daughter of Josiah Looney and Fannie Sullivan Looney, and a member of the Deer Clan. She attended school in Bryant from 1912 to 1922 and Eufaula Boarding School from 1922 to 1928.

She married Ellis L. Scott and was a homemaker. She was a member of Arbeka Baptist Church near Bryant and, in 1935, joined the Springfield United Indian Methodist Church, where she was a women's leader, Sunday school teacher, member of United Methodist Women's Club and a delegate to the Indian Missionary Conference.

She had been a resident of Okfuskee County since 1935.

Preceding her in death were her husband; her parents; one son, John Ellis "Sundala" Scott; two brothers, George "Barney" Looney, Sullivan Looney, and one sister, Becky B. Looney.

Survivors include two sons, Jess R. Scott, Weleetka; Vernon Yarholar, Oklahoma City; daughter, Frances Girty, Lawrence, Kan.; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Springfield Methodist Indian Church with Jerry Baker officiating and Justin Deere assisting. Burial will be at the Yarholar-Scott family cemeteryunder the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.

Betty June (Scott) McCormick

Longtime Seminole resident Betty June (Scott) McCormick died Tuesday in a Seminole hospital. She was 69.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Little Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Troglin and the Rev. Marion Hadsell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

She was born June 14, 1929, in Bristow, to Alvin Thomas Scott and Dorothy (Whitehead) Scott.

She married Glen McCormick in Seminole on Sept. 26, 1949, and had lived in Seminole for 50 years. She worked at Wrangler and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Assembly of God.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1975; her parents; a daughter, Sara McCormick, and granddaughter, Betty June "B.J." McCormick.

She is survived by her three sons, Joe Rich McCormick, Wolf; Glen Thomas McCormick, Boley; Terry Don McCormick, Shawnee; sisters, Mary Ellen Raffety, Jean Hoover, both of Shawnee; grandchildren, Connie Jean McCormick, Joshua Ryan McCormick, Lucritta Juanita Bradley McCormick, Jessica Dawn Bradley McCormick, Tesica Marie Tidwell, Nikkie Armstrong Osborn, Colt Sanford Armstrong, Patrick Bradley and James Bradley.
