Glen Asa Smith

Harrah resident Glen Asa Smith died Thursday at his home. He was 59.

Smith was born June 26, 1940, in Ada to Joe Monroe Smith and Stella May (Stewart) Smith. He was raised in Holdenville, where he graduated Holdenville High School in 1958. He married Betty Jean Martin on July 4, 1959, in Holdenville.

Smith graduated from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas, in 1959 and began managing Parks Funeral Home in Okemah.

He remained there until 1968 when he attended Central State College in Edmond. While attending college, he worked part-time at Paylor Funeral Home in Midwest City until becoming a full time associate of Wilson Funeral Home in Harrah.

After his graduation from Central State College in 1972 with a bachelor of business administration degree, he and his wife purchased in 1973 the Wilson Funeral Home, which they later renamed Asa Smith Funeral Service. He and his wife owned and operated the funeral home until his death.

Smith was also a mortuary management instructor at Central State College and had served five terms on the State Burial Board, four of which he served as president of the board.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Harrah, past member of the Harrah Lions Club and Harrah Kiwanis Club, former member of the Harrah Planning Commission and past president of the Harrah Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Smith, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Cass and Elizabeth Smith, Harrah, and their children Britta and Bridger Smith; Drs. Robert and Alicia Smith, Harrah, and their children, Juan Carlos Smith, Gabriela Smith and Isabella Smith; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Hazel Smith, Las Vegas, Nev.; James and La Ruth Smith, Oklahoma City; Winfred and Sammye Smith, Harrah; sister, Sara Majors, Holdenville; and his mother-in-law, Lois Martin, Harrah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Harrah First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery, Harrah, under the direction of Asa Smith Funeral Service.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony's Cancer Center, Oklahoma City.

Mark Kyle Tanner

Mark Kyle Tanner died Feb. 5, in Dallas, Texas, the result of a car accident. He was 42.

He was born Oct. 8, 1957, in Cleburne, Texas. He graduated in 1976 from Shawnee High School, where he played football and baseball.

Tanner worked as a senior landman for Enserch Exploration and National Energy Group in Dallas since graduation from East Central University in Ada, in 1981.

Survivors his wife, Lisa Freeman Tanner of Dallas; parents, Bill and Ellen Tanner, of Edmond; brother, Bill Tanner Jr. and wife Paula of Waco, Texas; brother Keith Tanner and wife Ginger of Dallas; sister, Kimberley and husband Mike Salter of Edmond and several nieces and nephews.

His services were 1:30 p.m. Monday in Waco. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

Linda Lane

Linda Lane died Thursday at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was 55.

Mrs. Lane was born Aug. 6, 1944, in Hopkins County, Ky., to Charlie Raymond Edmiston and Charlie Gertrude Lynch Edmiston. She was raised in the Rabbit Ridge community in Hopkins County and attended Dalton School.

She married Kennie Lane on Dec. 17, 1965, in Hopkins County. She moved to Mesquite, Texas, returned to Kentucky, then moved to Oklahoma, where she was a Weleetka resident since 1981.

She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Weleetka, and had attended the First Christian Church in Weleetka.

Survivors include her son, Oral McKendley "Bubby" Lane Jr., of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Barry Cox, Madisonville, Ky.; Leslie and Curtis Chotkey, Shawnee; her mother, Charlie G. Edmiston, Madisonville; sister and brother-in-law, Janice M. and David Reynolds, Madisonville; five grandchildren, Bryan, Amy, Brandi, Chad and James; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be today at the First Free Will Baptist Church, Weleetka, with the Rev. Mike Craig officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Williamson Funeral Home, Weleetka.

Joe Miles

Shawnee resident Joe Miles died Friday at a local hospital. He was 72.

Miles was born March 28, 1927, in Shawnee to Edward Wood Miles and Zella Florence (Bayless) Miles. He attended Shawnee Schools and married Aleta Rose Slattery on June 11, 1955, in Wewoka.

He worked for Oklahoma Geophysical Seismographing. He returned in 1955 to Shawnee, where he worked for Haney Oil Co. for several years. He managed Haney No. 5 Gas Station from 1965 to 1971 and also worked as an independent backhoe operator. He worked for Cherry Construction, then for T&C Construction before retiring.

He served in U.S. Navy from April 1945 to September 1946 and received the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

Survivors include his wife, Aleta Rose "Phoebe" Miles, of the home; three daughters, V.J. "Jeannie" Miles, Tecumseh; Aleta Alexander, Dale; S.K. Sparks, Oklahoma City; son, Steven Sparks, Tecumseh; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Florence Welch, Shawnee; sister and brother-in-law, Ina and J.D. Johnson, Shawnee; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one granddaughter.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mission Cemetery, Tecumseh, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with Herman Coffman officiating.

Alma O. Varner

Alma O. Varner died Friday in Oklahoma City. She was 97.

She was born June 8, 1912, near Oark, Ark. She was the daughter of James M. and Ruth (Osborn) Eldredge.

Mrs. Varner was a long-time resident of Chandler. She was a long-time member and supporter of the Forest Baptist Church.

She married Noah E. Varner in Sapulpa on Nov. 17, 1927. He preceded her in death April 25, 1975.

Others who have preceded her in death include her parents, two brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Norma Carman of Charleston, S.C.; Wanda Scott of Norman; Mary Ann Varner of Chandler; one brother, Lawrence Eldredge of Hotchkill, Colo. one sister, Eva Epperson of Howard, Colo.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Chandler, with the Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler.

Wilma S. Leonard

Wilma S. Leonard died Thursday in Seminole. She was 81.

She was born May 4, 1918, in Paden. She was the daughter of Charles Wesley and Vera Maud (Rice) Harris.

Mrs. Leonard was a resident of Seminole and a member of the First Christian Church in Prague. Before she retired she was a beautician, owned a ceramic shop and operated a dairy farm for seven years.

She married Carl Verlin Leonard on Dec. 29, 1962. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1991.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Survivors include one son, Herbert R. McEvers, Brooking, Ore.; one daughter, Betty Ice, Prague; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and loving companion, Melvin Evans.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with Rev. Randall Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Paden Cemetery.

Richard Austin Ray Smith

Little Axe resident Richard Austin Ray Smith died Tuesday in Fort Branch, Ind. He was 3.

He was born in Norman on Oct. 10, 1997, the son of Richard Justin Ray Smith and Corina Helen Smith.

Austin enjoyed watching "WWF Wrestling," "Power Rangers," "Pokemon," "Lion King" and "Toy Story." Alligators were his favorite animal and he had just learned to say his alphabet.

Preceding him in death was his brother, Brandon Bryan.

Survivors include his mother, Corina Smith of Little Axe; his father and stepmother, Justin and Stephanie Smith of Fort Branch, Ind.; maternal grandparents, Terry and Carol Bryan of Little Axe, David and Lucy Wyatt of Texas; paternal grandparents, Rick and Monica Smith of Haubstadt, Ind., and Darrell Vance of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepbrother, Aaron Holland of Fort Branch, Ind.; stepsister, Amber Holland of Fort Branch, Ind.; great-grandparents, Jack and Hazel Johnston, Shawnee; LaVerne and Glenda Bryan of Pineville, La.; Gerald P. Jefferies of Alabama; great-great-grandmother Rosa Sprinkles of Midwest City; and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Sunny Stuart and the Rev. Lester Vogler will officiate. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery.

Josephine Elephant Davis

Josephine Elephant Davis, 88, Shawnee, died Wednesday at her home.

She was born Oct. 20, 1912, in Shawnee, the daughter of Harry and Annie Elephant. She attended Mekusukey School.

Mrs. Davis retired in 1977 from Shawnee Medical Center, where she was a cook, then worked at Bea Britton's Restaurant.

Mrs. Davis, who lived in Shawnee most of her life, was a member of the A.A.R.P.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Edward Elephant; and sister, Katherine Carter.

Survivors include, three sons, Ronald Gene Davis, Modesto, Calif.; Edward Leroy Davis, Tucson, Ariz.; Dale Allen Davis, McLoud; one daughter, Geraldine Davis Knapp, Shawnee; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Wayne Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Johnson Cemetery.

Angel Deann Carter

Angel Deann Carter, infant daughter of Connie Deann Reeves and Jeremie James Carter of Shawnee, died Jan. 31 at an Oklahoma City hospital.

She was born Jan. 31, 2001, in Oklahoma City.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Curtis Evans; great-grandmother, Irene Evans; great-grandfathers, Ed Jones and Jim Lewis.

Survivors include mother and father, Connie Deann Reeves and Jeremie James Carter; maternal grandparents, Merl and Debra Mathis and Mack and Kathy Reeves; paternal grandparents, Jimmy Don and Trellis Carter; aunts and uncles, John Ryan and Kristen Reeves, Darrell and Heidi Mehring, Tisha Reeves and Michelle Reeves; great-grandparents, Leona Lewis, Herman and Linda Jones, Jimmy Carter and Dale and Jean Walls; great-great-grandparents, Liza Jones and Francis Englelhart and numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

Services were Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Roberts officiating. Burial was at Resthaven Memorial Park.

James Lester Wade

James Lester "Leck" Wade, Carmen, Okla., died Wednesday in an Alva hospital. The former Tecumseh resident was 94.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1906, near Pink in Indian Territory. Wade was the eldest son of James Kildress "Doc" and Louise Frances "Lula" Barnett Wade.

On Feb. 17, 1924, he married Blanche Pearl Little in Pink.

Wade was an active member of First Assembly of God Church in Tecumseh for 45 years before moving to Carmen.

He farmed in Pink before moving to Tecumseh in 1941. In 1950, his family moved to Springfield, Colo., where, he farmed with his four brothers. In 1953, he moved back to Tecumseh. He was living in Carmen at the time of his death.

Preceding him in death were his wife in 1993, his parents, and a grandson, Gene Michael Wisdom, in 1999.

Survivors include his daughter, Syble Imogene Wisdom of Tecumseh; a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Shirley Wade of Edmond; two sisters, Hester Fowler of Springfield, Colo., and Lola Landers of Phoenix, Ariz.; four brothers, Lowell Wade, Hallie Wade, Audi Wade and Jessie Wade, all of Springfield, Colo.; four grandchildren, James Teddy Wisdom of Oklahoma City; Jeffrey Wisdom of Piedmont; Kristi Wade Russell of Edmond, and Stephanie Wade of Norman; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church in Tecumseh. Richard L. Haug, assisted by the Rev. Robert P. Rider, will officiate. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
