Laura Margaret Conklin

Meeker resident Laura Margaret Conklin died Wednesday at Manor Care in Midwest City. She was 97.

Mrs. Conklin was born April 30, 1903, in Dill City to Aminadab Conklin Jr. and Laura Ann (Dazey) Conklin. She graduated from Garber High School in 1923 and attended Phillips University in Enid. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Oklahoma A&M in 1950.

She was a school teacher for more than 50 years, teaching at Union School in Garfield County, and in Noble, Pawnee, Tulsa, Creek and Okfuskee Counties.

She was a Baptist and member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Lincoln County Home Demonstration Club. She had been named Homemaker of the Year.

Survivors include her sister, Daisy Dean Donaldson, Midwest City; sister and brother-in-law, Olva Olvena and Herman Feken, Perry; brother-in-law, Claude O. Travis, Del City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, A.J. Conklin; and sister, Mildred Roxanna Travis.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Perry, with Pastor David O. Travis and the Rev. Lynn Scott officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Cemetery near Breckenridge under the direction of Brown-Sisson Funeral Home, Perry.

Carl D. Wiseman

Carl D. Wiseman, M.D., died Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev. He was 71.

He was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Selma, Ohio. He was the son of Ross Everett and Sylva (Griffith) Wiseman.

He had been a resident and medical practitioner in Prague since 1977 and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ada and a member of the Prague Chamber of Commerce. He graduated from Cedarville College in Ohio before entering the United States Army where he served during the Korean conflict.

Upon returning from his military service, he attended medical school at Ohio State University. He began his practice in Tishomingo.

He served as the Pontotoc County health director in Ada before coming to Prague. He married Charlene Schornick in Gainesville, Texas, on Dec. 29, 1979.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Judy Bennington and one brother, Bob Wiseman.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Wiseman of the home in Prague; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debi and Marty Sferrazza, Wilbraham, Mass., and Linda and Dan Collar, Clayton, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kim Wiseman, Prague; three brothers, Clayton Wiseman, Mason, Ohio, David Wiseman, Xenia, Ohio, and August Wiseman, Springfield, Ohio; one sister, Corena Turnbull, Roscommon, Mich.; four grandchildren, Jacob and Steven Collar, Victoria Sferrazza and Alexis Wiseman.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Prague with the Rev. Starland Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Prague Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.

The casket will not be opened during the services.

John Henry Chesser

John Henry Chesser of Shawnee died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 59.

He was born Jan. 27, 1941, in Pineville, La. He was the son of John and Georgia Chesser.

He was reared in Shawnee. Chesser was a welder for Gilbert and Sons Trucking of Tecumseh.

He married Linda Johnson on Dec. 16, 1997, in Shawnee. He served three years in the United States Army.

Chesser was a member of the VFW Post 1317 and the DAV Chapter 54.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Chesser of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cory Lynn Chesser, Shawnee; Crystal and Billy Campbell, Shawnee; Kim and John Smith of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, mother, Georgia Chesser, Dry Prong, La.; four sisters, Jettie McKinney, Shawnee; Dorothy Bolton, Texas; Thelma and Ruby Duncan, both of Dry Prongs, La.; brother, Floyd Chesser, Houston, Texas.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Pastor Craig Brandt officiating. He will be buried next to his father in Lone Pine Cemetery in Bentley, La., under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Mark Edward Williams

Mark Edward Williams of McLoud died Thursday at a local hospital. He was 39.

He was born Oct. 20, 1960, in Canal Zone, Panama. He was the son of Harold R. and Evelyn F. (Brinkman) Williams.

He attended school at Carl Albert and graduated from Pryor High School and attended Rose State College. Williams was a member of the Friendship House.

He had lived in the Oklahoma City, Midwest City and McLoud areas most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Survivors include his parents, Harold and Evelyn Williams of the home; brother, Danny R. Williams of the home; sister, Vinca L. Williams of the home and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Leroy Kerbo officiating. Burial will be at Dale Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Nealon Davis

Nealon Davis of Shawnee died Thursday at his home. He was 73.

He was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Mexia, Texas, the son of Hardy and Nettie Davis.

He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 33 years. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Ocean from Nov. 17, 1944, to March 1946.

Davis was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of Oklahoma, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He moved to Valliant, Okla., in 1927 with his parents.

Survivors include wife Lorena Davis of Shawnee; two children and their spouses, by a previous marriage, Steve and Jenny Davis of Oklahoma City and Judy and Richard Pound of Stephenville, Texas; four stepchildren and their spouses, Janice and Timmy Wolfenbarger of Oklahoma City, Linnis and Robert Sherrell of Oklahoma City, Patricia Mathes of Carrollton, Texas, and Linda and Charles Miller of Shawnee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Ruth Davis of Ft. Smith Ark., and Howard and Margo Davis and Dale and Alma Davis, all of Shawnee; uncle and spouse, Doyle and Artie Davis of Shawnee; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; eight stepgrandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elbert and Wilma Smith of Spavinaw; sister-in-law, Leoma F. Kofford of Edmond; also many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Rev. Leroy Rice officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Shawnee.

Jennie Folks

Jennie Folks of Tecumseh died Friday in Oklahoma City. She was 70.

Services are pending and will be announced by Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Jack R. Stone, Sr.

Jack R. Stone Sr. of Dallas, Texas, died Thursday in a Dallas, Texas, Nursing Center. He was 92.

He was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Blue Mountain, Ark., the son of E. and Mittye Stone.

He started his business career with Firestone in Shawnee from 1930 to 1938. He moved to Tucumcari, N.M., where he was a merchant for 20 years. He owned the First National Bank in Tipton until he retired in 1977.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Elizabeth Jones Stone in 1975.

Survivors include wife Yvonne Fogg Stone; son, Barry E. Stone of Altus; son, Jack R. Stone, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; sister, Gwendolyn Seikel of Westminister, Colo.; granddaughter, Shelly Lynn Armstrong; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Clare, Jarret and Gabrielle Armstrong, Sabine and Danielle Schaeffers and twins on the way.

Services will be noon Saturday at Fairview Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. David Clewell officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to a children's charity of the donors choice.

Agnes Jackman Winstead

Agnes Jackson Winstead died Friday in Chickasha. She was 103.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1896, in Moore, the daughter of William Henry Jackman and Jennie Baxter Jackman. She married John Benjamin Winstead on April 22, 1916, in Oklahoma City.

He preceded her in death. She grew up in Moore and graduated from Moore High School.

She lived in Oklahoma City for many years and worked at Kerr's Department Store.

Winstead and her family lived in many towns throughout Oklahoma before settling in Wanette. She moved to Chickasha on Aug. 8, 1997.

She attended the First Baptist Church while living in Wanette and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Chickasha and a member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one son, John B. Winstead, Jr.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Erma L. Winstead of Chickasha; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Sharon and Paul Castleman and a number of friends.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Wanette. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. at the Moore Cemetery in Moore.

Burial will be at the Moore Cemetery in Moore under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home, Chickasha.

Chloe Fayth Barrick

Chloe Fayth Barrick of Broken Arrow died Wednesday in Tulsa. She was 1 day old.

She was born June 13, 2000, in Tulsa. She was the daughter of Brian and Michelle (Lyon) Barrick.

Survivors include her parents, Brian and Michelle Barrick; brothers, Chandler and Cooper Barrick; uncles, Greg Lyon, Darrell Barrick and Mark Barrick; grandparents, Paul and Doris Lyon and Jimmy and Barbara Barrick; great-grandparents, Ralph Montgomery, Christine Lyon James and Bessie Elliott; numerous other family and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Nick Garland officiating. Burial will be at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Floral Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Edna Mae Phelps

Edna Mae Phelps died at her home in Seminole. She was 80.

She was born June 12, 1920, in Tulsa. Except for her college days and the years of the second World War, she spent most of her life in Seminole, where her parents and grandmother also lived.

She was inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame in 1986 and was nationally recognized as one of the Women of the 80s. There are entries on her in Who's Who of American Women, World Who's Who of Women and Who's Who in American Politics.

She received special citations from the governors of Texas and Kentucky and was named honorary Lt. Governor of Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University has both an OSU Library Edna Mae Phelps Award for employees or supporters of the library and an Edna Mae Phelps Scholarship for employees or supporters of the library and an Edna Mae Phelps Scholarship Endowment for university journalism students.

She graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in 1942 with a degree in journalism. She spent the war years editing a newspaper and living in northern California. After the war she and her husband moved back to Seminole, where she became a homemaker and mother.

She was president of the Seminole County Democrat Women's Club in 1968 and president of the Oklahoma Federation of Democrat Women's Clubs. She became the first woman ever to serve as chairwoman of the Oklahoma State Election Board, serving for six years.

She was elected to three successive four-year terms as a member of the Democratic National Committee. She was the state co-chairwoman of the organization to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Oklahoma.

She served on Sen. John Glenn's National Policy Council and attended the Democratic National Conventions.

She was a member and chairwoman of the Oklahoma State University Board of Regents for six years and founded the OSU Friends of the Library.

She belonged to a modern literature club, a stock market investment club and a bridge club. She was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include her husband, Joe; sons, Mark and Ron; daughters-in-law, Judy and Bonnie; and granddaughters, Lauren and Lane of Seminole.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church of Seminole. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to The Edna Mae Phelps Scholarship Endowment, OSU Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, Okla. 74076.
