Edward H. Vallandingham

Tecumseh resident Edward H. Vallandingham, 82, died Thursday in Norman.

He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 9, 1918, the son of Edward H. and Mable Della (Perry) Vallandingham.

He attended Rose Hill High School in Rose Hill, Iowa. He attended the University of Alaska for two years and later graduated from Upper Iowa University.

Mr. Vallandingham lived in Rose Hill, Iowa, Alaska, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Wyoming and Atoka, Okla., before moving to Tecumseh in 1986.

On July 31, 1937, he married his wife Ann in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

He worked for the Corps of Engineers for 24 years as a real estate purchasing agent.

After retirement, he worked for various real estate agents in Shawnee and Tecumseh.

Mr. Vallandingham was a member of the Evangelistic Center Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, son, Jack Vallandingham and son-in-law, Jim Jett.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Loy Bolt of LaGrange, Ga., and Sally Jett of Shawnee; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Karen Vallandingham, Terry and Shelly Vallandingham and Tim and Pam Vallandingham, all of Shawnee; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Woods and the Rev. Dave Fox will officiate. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park of Shawnee. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Carolyn Jo Hearn VanHooser

Carolyn Jo Hearn VanHooser, 65, died Wednesday at her Holdenville home.

She was born in Holdenville on June 26, 1935, the daughter of Minnie (Adams) and Ed Lucas.

She was reared in Shawnee and returned to Holdenville in 1949 with her family.

Mrs. VanHooser graduated in 1953 from Holdenville High School and attended Durant Business School from 1958-1959.

In 1956, she married Joel "Babe" Hearn. He preceded her in death in 1970. She later married James A. VanHooser.

She was employed as an administrative assistant for more than 12 years at Boyce Manor Nursing Home in Holdenville.

Mrs. VanHooser retired on March 31, 1998.

Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Todd and Linda Wyrick of Ohio and Terry Jo Hearn and his friend Amy Gerich of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren and their spouses, Kristopher Wyrick of Arkansas, Deidre Wyrick of Arkansas, Amy Diane and Monty Prince of Shawnee and Jeffrey Joel Hearn of Shawnee; a great-grandson; mother, Minnie Lucas of McLoud; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Kathryn and Gary Carmichael of McLoud; stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Donna Kay Underwood of Lindsey, Kathy Lee and David Brassfield of Chickasha and Linda and Zachery Burch of Edmond; stepsons, James R. VanHooser of Atwood and David. A. VanHooser of Lindsey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Neal and Betty VanHooser of Lindsey; and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Holdenville Cemetery. The Rev. Carl Robert Carden officiated, assisted by the Rev. Meredith Robinson. Services were under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville.

Charlie C. Palret

Charlie C. Palret of Brownsburg, Ind., died Friday at Brownsburg, Ind. He was 88.

He was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Valania, Ark., the son of Georgia and William Monroe Palret.

He was married to Wyoma Isaacs.

Mr. Palret was a plumber and pipe fitter, who lived the past eight years in Bloomsburg, Ind., prior to time spent in Illinois and serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the First Nazarene Church and Konawa American Legion.

Survivors include wife Wyoma Palret of Brownsburg, Ind.; daughter, Mildred Polly Williams, Brownsburg, Ind.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Roy L. Adams

Tecumseh resident Roy L. Adams died Wednesday in Shawnee. He was 90.

He was born March 11, 1909, in Tecumseh to James and Rachael (Henderson) Adams.

He married Thelma Harmon Nov. 17, 1934, in Tecumseh. She preceded him in death June 10, 1994.

Adams attended Ruggles School. He was raised in the Tecumseh area and lived in the Tecumseh and Macomb area most of his life. He farmed and raised cattle and worked with the Department of Transportation with the state of Oklahoma as a road grader operator until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers and one daughter, Lovern DeLoach.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Larry Whisenhunt, Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Harriet Adams, Macomb; sister, Mae Wollery, Shawnee; brothers, Richard Adams, Nashville, Tenn., and Wayne Adams, Shawnee; granddaughters, Jamie Neumann, Spokane, Wash., Karol Greb, Medford, Ore., and Laura McAfee, Beebee, Ark.; grandson, James Allen DeLoach; five great-grandchildren; and a number of cousins.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh, with Doyle Loveland officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Laura Mabel Spaugy

Shawnee resident Laura Mabel Spaugy died Wednesday in Shawnee. She was 92.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh, with D.W. "Red" Barnes officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Other information is pending.

Viva Ludie (Alexander) Rippetoe

Viva Ludie (Alexander) Rippetoe, Arvada, Colo., died Tuesday in Denver, Colo. She was 87.

Mrs. Rippetoe was born on July 3, 1912, in Randolph, Okla. to John Alexander and Jennie Mullins.

She graduated from Murray State College in 1933 with an associate's degree in science.

She married Clinton Otho Rippetoe on March 10, 1936, at the First Baptist Church in Konawa.

Mrs. Rippetoe was a homemaker, and a member of Eastern Star in Belleville, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Rippetoe.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Montgomery, Riverview, Mich.; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Rita Rippetoe, Arvada, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Mark Rippetoe and Michael Rippetoe, both of Riverview, Mich.; Russell Montgomery, Fort Sill; and Rebecca Montgomery, Denver, Colo.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Shawnee, 1102 W. MacArthur, Shawnee, OK 74801.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee, with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Kenneth Wayne Little Axe

Kenneth Wayne "Floyd" Little Axe, Mabank, Texas, died Tuesday in Mabank, Texas. He was 65.

Little Axe was born on Dec. 21, 1934, in Little Axe, the son of John and Lillian (Sloan) Little Axe.

He attended school at Southgate and Little Axe.

He owned and operated Ken's Plumbing.

He grew up in Little Axe, and had lived in Texas for more than 30 years.

Little Axe was a member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, and was active in tribal ceremonies.

Survivors include his son, Kenneth Todd Little Axe, Dallas, Texas; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Kathy (Little Axe) and Lloyd Deere, Little Axe; Melissa and Glenn New Moon, Oklahoma City; Eileen and Richard Pearce, Oklahoma city; Maxine Gutierrez, Oklahoma City; Vanessa (Little Axe) and John Caires, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; his father, John Little Axe, Little Axe; three brothers, Jerry James Little Axe, Little Axe; Troy Little Axe, Bartlesville; Dan Little Axe, Little Axe; three sisters, Glenda Sullivan, Okmulgee; Wanda Tiger, Oklahoma City; Carolyn Little Axe, Little Axe; a half brother, Jon Al Little Axe; and two half sisters, Marilyn Little Axe and Sabrina Little Axe; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were held 4 p.m. Thursday at Corner Stone Indian Baptist Church with Bryce Scott and Johnny Mann officiating.

Tribal rites were held Thursday evening at the Little Axe Community House.

Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Cemetery.

W.T. Whitehead

Former Shawnee resident W.T. "Tom" Whitehead died Jan. 3 in a Snyder, Texas, hospital. He was 89.

Whitehead was born Jan. 5, 1911, on his grandfather's O H Bar ranch in Snyder, to N.B. "Billy" and Lavina Catherine Whitehead.

He owned the Whiteway Garage before his retirement, and was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Thomas Whitehead; and a daughter, Beulah Marie Mills.

Survivors include two grandsons, Don Mills and Tommy Whitehead; five granddaughters, Treva Brown, Sherri Robinson, Paula Lako, Lisa Whitehead and Joyce Keen; and numerous great-grandchildren.

There were no services.

Wilma Lain

Wilma Lain, 89, Seminole died Wednesday at her home. She was 89.

Mrs. Lain was born on Feb. 8, 1910, in Frances, the daughter of William Parker and Ethel Viola (Massey) Chism.

She married Yandell Lain in 1948, in Ada.

She attended Columbia University and East Central University. Mrs. Lain taught at Ada Public School for 40 years before retiring.

Mrs. Lain was a member of First United Methodist Church, Methodist Women's Auxiliary, prayer group and Sunday school and Delta Kappa Gamma (retired teacher's organization).

She had moved to Seminole from Ada about 27 years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Yandell Lain; parents, William and Ethel Chism; a brother, Lloyd Chism; and two sisters, Norma McCarthy and Lucille Bates.

Survivors include her three nephews, John V. McCarthy II, Seminole; Joseph M. Victory, Seminole; R. Kenneth Bates, Waco, Texas; and two nieces, Susan Duff, Seminole; and Mary Louise Nommenson, Houston, Texas.

Viewing will be held prior to the service.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Karges officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park in Ada, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
