Stella Mae Evans

Stella Mae Evans, longtime Cushing resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 76 years.

The daughter of the late James Henry Hooper and Blanche Hattie Shoemaker Hooper, Stella was born on July 24, 1929 in Cushing, OK and was reared and educated here, graduating from Cushing High School.

She was married to Richard A. Evans on June 10, 1950, here in Cushing and to this union four children, Rick, Mark, Julie and Mick were born. Mr. Evans preceded her in death on March 24, 1989.

Stella had worked at the Cushing Library and later for the Cushing Regional Hospital prior to retirement.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church; she had served as a Den Mother while her children were growing up and she was a very devoted Grandmother to her grandkids, enjoying all of their activities. She loved watching baseball and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Rick Evans and his wife Virginia of Enid, Julie Kennedy and her husband Mike of Cushing and Mick Evans and his wife Suzie of Cushing; one daughter-in-law, Clelly Evans of Cushing; 16 grandchildren, Jessica Turetken, Phillip Evans, Sommer Evans, Jayson Evans, Jana Taylor, Sarah Pyles, Jared Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Emily Kennedy, Justin Kennedy, Elizabeth Kennedy, Evan Kennedy, Randy Evans, Brieanne Evans, Tyler Evans and Garrett Evans; 7 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son Reverend Mark Evans.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 10, 2006 at 10:30 A.M. in the First Assembly of God Church with Reverend Robert Adams, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.

Mabel Frances Sledge Hicks

Mrs. Mabel Frances Sledge Hicks, 94, died March 8, 2006. Though her passing brings momentary sadness to those who knew and cherished her, an eternal homecoming celebration is just beginning.

She was born June 27, 1911, in Bay City, Texas, a daughter of Kentucky natives, the late Robert and Addie Sledge. She graduated from Duke (Oklahoma) High School, helped rear a number of nieces and nephews, then attended Draughn's Business School in Oklahoma City before marriage to the late Gifford R. Hicks. She was a resident of the Oklahoma Panhandle's Yarbrough community and Guymon for 45 years, lived in Cushing 15 years, Edmond 5 years, and Stillwater the past year. Her career, in addition to raising six children and farming, included co-ownership in a company that designed and sent quilts from coast to coast, nursing in both Elkhart and Guymon, as well as clothing sales in Guymon.

Mabel was a devoted Christian, taught Baptist Sunday School and helped with a neighborhood charity pantry until she was in her mid-eighties, and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She cherished membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a charter member of the Oklahoma Panhandle DAR, and a serious student of genealogy all of her life.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Loyd Vaughn of Stillwater, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Monica Hicks of Montgomery, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Brenda Hicks of Little Elm, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Darryl and Karen Hicks of Flower Mound, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Wendell and Treva Hicks of Skiatook and daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Russ Killingsworth of Edmond; 12 grandchildren, Gerald Vaughn (South Carolina), Rev. Steve Vaughn (Texas), Travis Vaughn (Oklahoma), Randal Hicks (Alaska), Kimberly Hicks (Georgia), Lindsay Hicks (Texas), James K. "Jake" Hicks, Jr. (Texas), Steven Hicks (Texas), Charnee Barker (Washington), David Hicks (Texas), Matthan Beard (Oklahoma) and Leah Beard (Oklahoma) and 11 great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a host of beloved family members and friends.

A celebration of her home-going will be held at 1 p.m., Monday March 13, at the First Baptist Church, Cushing.

Memorial gifts to honor Mabel Hicks may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 187 Cushing or to the Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch, P.O. Box 1890 Amarillo, Texas, 79174.

Patricia Ann (Wynn) Nighswonger

Patricia Ann (Wynn) Nighswonger, 73, of Cushing, passed away March 13, 2006 in the Drumright Regional Hospital.

She was born Jan. 14, 1933 in Vinita, Okla. to Floyd and Pauline Wynn (Wattenburger). After 35 years as a nurse, Pat chose to be an anatomical donor to University of Oklahoma Health Science Center for Diabetes Research.

Patricia is survived by her husband of 53 yrs, C.E. (Gene) Nighswonger, of Cushing; sisters, Barbara Holland married to Wayne, Broken Arrow, Okla., Diane King married to Tommy, Flagstaff, Ariz.; children, Deborah Linder married to Donald, Marsha Rogers married to Greg, Terrie Wright married to Steve, Cynthia Moran married to David, Gene Nighswonger married to Phyllis, K.C. Nighswonger, and Robert Nighswonger married to Garnet; grandchildren, Rhonda Cheaney married to Troy, and children Alisha, Troy W., Justus and Maximus; Terry Cross, married to Jason, with child Jesse; Leslie Exton married to Alan, with children Alison and Nicole; Floyd Morris; Jeffrey Morris and daughter Fatima; Angela Heath, married to Ken, with children April, Austin and Myles; Melanie Jackson and children Blaine and Madison; Jeremy Rogers, Brandon, Jarod and Amber Wright, Christopher, Mathew and Nicholas Marcum with son Nicholas Kade, Andrew, Chaad and Lauren Nighswonger, Keifer, Kyler and Kendra Nighswonger, Crystal, Jessica and Heather Nighswonger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, sister, Marsha Wolff and great-grandson Marcus Heath.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the Big Creek Church of the Brethren, 101 N. Brethren Rd., Cushing. Memorial Donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York City, New York, 10005

Terry Watson

Terry Watson, Cushing resident, passed away Sunday March 12, 2006 at his residence at the age of 52 years.

The son of Robert Watson and the late Monta Smith Gayhart, he was born on July 6, 1953 in Stillwater, Okla. and was reared and educated in the Yale area.

Terry is survived by his wife, Diane Watson of the home; one son, Shea of the home; four daughters, Tara, Jamie, Amanda and Amber; his father, Robert Watson; one brother, Bill Watson; three grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Monta Gayhart.

Memorial contributions may be made to Judith Karman Hospice in his name.

Dorothy Ann (Zumbrunnen) Fancher

Dorothy Ann (Zumbrunnen) Fancher, age 59, of Wellston, passed away March 16, 2006, in Midwest City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at the First Assembly of God Church, Wellston, Okla. with Pastor Dewayne Settle officiating. Dora May Scott

Dora May Scott, Yale resident, passed away in Stillwater on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at the age of 84 years.

The daughter of the late Willie Oscar Hopkins and Mayme Elizabeth (Cooper) Hopkins, Dora was born on June 4, 1921 in Schlegel, Okla. and was reared and educated in the Schlegel and Yale communities.

She was united in marriage to Oscar L. Scott on June 4, 1940 at Schlegel and to this union, four children were born: Charles, Barbara, Richard and William. Mr. Scott and son Charles preceded her in death.

Dora was a member of the Baptist Church, a member of the Home Demonstration Club and had worked on the election board for over 35 years. After her children were raised and gone from home, she worked in the home health care industry and for Swan Rubber Company, Munsingwear Sewing Factory, and Davis Yale Chapel.

Survivors include her children, Richard Lee Scott of Maramec, William "Bill" Scott of Stillwater, and Barbara Ann Shepherd of Edmond, Okla.; two brothers, Floyd Hopkins of Yale and Ernest Hopkins of Cushing; one sister, Floria Todd of Yale; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, husband and son, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Hopkins and Harold Lloyd Hopkins, and three sisters, Bula Pearl Hopkins, Ruby Hamby and Lucy Smith.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 19, 2006 at 3 p.m. in the Davis Yale Chapel in Yale with Brother Michael Dershem officiating. Burial followed in the Greenwood Cemetery, southeast of Yale.

Pearl Louise Hermann

Pearl Louise Hermann, 77, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Cushing, died Friday, March 17, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in the Brown-Dugger Funeral Home Chapel in Perry, Okla. Interment will be in Grace Hill Cemetery in Perry. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home in Perry.

Zealis Ancil Mitchell

Zealis Ancil Mitchell, 86, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at his home in Glencoe.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Alvin Dalton and the Rev. John Danner will officiate. Burial will be in Ripley.

He was born April 10, 1919, to Charles Allen and Anna (Williams) Mitchell in Yale. The family then moved to California where he was reared and went to school.

After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served his country for more than 18 years. During the military he received numerous awards and medals and was a great hero.

He married his first wife, Lawanda, and the family moved to the Stillwater/Glencoe area in the 1960s. The couple was married for 59 years until her death in 1997. He then married Nerva Lorene (Pruitt) Dec. 27, 1997, in Enid.

He was an electrician by trade. He was an actor starring in several movies in his younger years.

He and his first wife went on many mission trips and built many homes along the way. They also pioneered many churches and started several soup kitchens for those less fortunate.

He also served as an evangelist and pastor. He was a very giving man who was always smiling. He is remembered as always having a kind word and could find the best in the worst situation. He liked to fish and garden and loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Nerva of the home; a daughter, Charlotte Rogers and husband, Jerry, of Stillwater; nine step-children, seven grandchildren, numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one daughter, Shirley Motsinger, a brother and sisters.

Brad Sugg

Brad Sugg, who was publisher of the Tahlequah Daily Press for more than 17 years, died March 18, 2006, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 53.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at the Green Country Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 203 Commercial Road, Tahlequah, Okla. Burial will follow in Baguell, Texas, at Leesville Baptist Church, with a private family memorial service.

Gordon Arndt

Gordon Arndt, age 66 of Cushing died on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the Cushing Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Park Place Baptist Church, Cushing. Interment will follow at the Euchee Valley Memorial Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of the Palmer-Marler Funeral Home, Cushing.

Gordon was born on Dec. 3, 1939 in Ft. Morgan, Co. to Conrad and Elizabeth Arndt.

He grew up and attended school in Ft. Morgan, Co. Gordon also served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. Gordon had moved to Tulsa where he met his wife of 33 years, Betty Arndt. They made their home in Cushing, where they had resided for 30 years.

Gordon was a truck driver and worked for Jerry Mills Construction and Welding for many years.

Gordon is survived by his wife Betty of the home, children Wendy Greenhall of Tulsa, Mike Arndt and wife Lela of Apple Valley, Ca., 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, sister Pauline Lamborn of Laurel, Mt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Barbra Payton, two brothers Donnie Arndt and Edward Arndt, son Randy Bearden Sr. and grandson Randy Bearden Jr.
