Elva Ione Parson Traverse

Tecumseh resident Elva Ione Parson Traverse died Wednesday in Tecumseh. She was 89.

Mrs. Traverse was born Dec. 26, 1910, in Henryetta, the daughter of Benjamin and Mae (Lightfoot) Hickman.

She moved to California in the 1940s, and moved to a farm near Asher in 1969. She had lived in Tecumseh since 1980.

She married Charley Parson in 1924 in Texas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1961.

She married Harold Traverse on May 18, 1963, in Redondo, Calif. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1987.

Mrs. Traverse worked as a magnesium inspector for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, Calif., until her retirement in 1969.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Parson; and her parents, Benjamin and Mae Hickman.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Coye and Drucilla Parson, Torrance, Calif.; two stepsons and a spouse, Harold D. Traverse, California; and Bruce and Jan Traverse, California; a brother, Elmo Hickman, Bakersfield, Calif.; four grandchildren, Michael Lee, Tecumseh; Don Parson, Long Beach, Calif.; Scott Schultz, Venice, Calif.; Debbie Parson, Torrance, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, in Tecumseh Cemetery, with Bob Anderson of the Highland Church of Christ officiating.

Services are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh.

Edgar Lee Smith

Edgar Lee Smith died Tuesday. He was 87.

He was born in Depew on March 11, 1913, to John and Lucinda (Goodwin) Smith. He was a resident of Stroud most of his life and a member of the Stroud Christian Church.

Smith was a farmer and a rancher.

He married Georgia Cronin in Chandler Oct. 29, 1938.

Preceding him in death were his wife in 1984, his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are one son, Edgar L. Smith of Rutland, Vt.; one brother, Norman Smith of Stroud; one sister, Vernell Rouse of Stroud; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Stroud with the Rev. Randy Ethridge officiating. Burial will follow in Stroud Cemetery.

Irene Vasquez Ontiveros

Irene Vasquez Ontiveros of Shawnee died Thursday at a local nursing home. She was 98.

A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church with the Rev. Maurus Jaeb O.S.B. officiating. Burial will follow in Tecumseh Cemetery.

Barbara Ann Griggs

Barbara Ann Griggs of Shawnee died Friday at a local nursing home. She was 71.

She was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Shawnee. She was the daughter of William (W.R.) Griggs and Edith (Jackson) Griggs.

She was a member of the First Church of God at Ninth and Shawnee and had lived in Shawnee most all her life.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Roy Sadler, Shawnee; two nephews and his wife, Stephen and Mary Ruth Sadler, Maryland; Keith Sadler, Oakland, Calif.; a niece and her husband, Janet and Bill Schmid, Norman; great-nephew, Jason Sadler, Maryland; several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery Outdoor Chapel with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Bonnie B. McNamara

Bonnie B. McNamara of Shawnee died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 87.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 59th and Council Road, Oklahoma City. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Evelyn G. Park

Former Chandler resident Evelyn G. Park died Friday in Mountain Home, Ark. She was 86.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Hugh Willoby officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler.

Jack N. Arnold

Maud resident Jack N. Arnold died Tuesday at a local hospital. He was 74.

Arnold was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Bloomburg, Texas, to Smith "Doc" and Mary Alice (Bass) Arnold.

He married Ann Hill on Feb. 26, 1944, in Maud.

Arnold graduated from Maud High School in 1943. He worked for Amerada Petroleum in Seminole for 25 years. He was an oilfield pumper.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Seminole as well as past president of the Maud Rotary and Maud Athletic Club. He was a former volunteer fireman and city councilman in Maud. He also coached Maud Little League.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Arnold, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Richard Northcott, Seminole; Sue and Dan Herriman, Konawa; and Jackie and Sam Acree, Maud; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Bo Clymer, Seminole, and Sally and James Christopher, Seminole; grandchildren, Sherri and Tom Sockey, Maud; Ran and Jan Northcott, Fort Bragg, S.C.; and Eric and Gavin (Thump) Acree, Maud; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Maud. Burial will be at Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home.

Winnie Opal Shaw

Konawa resident Winnie Opal Shaw died Tuesday in Ada. She was 83.

Shaw was born April 16, 1916, in Sasakwa to Lucy Marshall and Ed Gaines.

A resident of San Diego, Calif., she returned to Konawa in the early 1970s. She was a retired telephone operator as well as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and First Baptist Church of Konawa.

Survivors include her sisters, Eunice Raines, Konawa, and Helen Roulston, Guthrie; and many nieces, nephews and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Shaw; five brothers; and three sisters.

Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Vamoosa Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Payne officiating. Services are under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home, Konawa.

Chester Hand Jr.

Konawa resident Chester Hand Jr. died Wednesday. He was 38.

Hand was born March 22, 1961, in Michigan to Honey Hand and Chester Grant Hand Sr.

He married Kelly Hand in Ada on March 20, 1993.

He worked as a correctional officer and served 13 years in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly Hand, of the home; daughters, Jody Kay and Kasandra Denise Hand, both of the home; son, Charles Grant Hand, of the home; father, Chester Hand Sr., Wichita Falls, Texas; mother, Honey Hand, Oklahoma City; grandmother, Allie Taylor, Midwest City; brother, James Hand, Wichita Falls, Texas; and sister, Rhonda Henderson, Edmond.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Vamoosa Cemetery, with Richard Winters officiating. Services are under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home, Konawa.

Jeremiah Ponkilla

Jeremiah Ponkilla, infant son of Sharon R. Ponkilla of Tecumseh, died Tuesday in Shawnee.

Survivors include his mother, Sharon R. Ponkilla, Tecumseh; grandmother, Jane Johnson, Tecumseh; grandfather, Daniel Ponkilla, Jones; and great-grandparents, Albert and Orphia Creek, Little Axe.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel in Tecumseh, with Chaplain James Walters officiating. Burial will be at Creek Family Cemetery.

Windal W. Sisemore

Tecumseh resident Windal W. "Bill" Sisemore died Tuesday in Tecumseh. He was 77.

Sisemore was born Dec. 10, 1921, at Sugar Grove, Ark., to William and Elizabeth A. (Yandell) Sisemore.

He married Dorothy Brumgard on Sept. 12, 1991, in Gatesville, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He also was a self-employed farmer. A resident of the Checotah area where he sold produce for many years, Sisemore moved to the Bethel area in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Sisemore, of the home; sons, Alden Rae Sisemore, Soquel, Calif., and Windal Sisemore, Bragg; daughters, Connie Sue Sisemore, Fresno, Calif.; Annette Ann Williams and Elizabeth Luttrell, both of Gore; Sharon Fisk, Muskogee; Vada Sisemore, Tulsa; and Carolyn Ogren, Bragg; stepchildren, Ronald Swisher, New Cumberland, Pa., and Debra Horn, Edmond; sisters, Emily Heard, Checotah; Laverne Turner, Wagoner; and Cybil Everidge, Eufaula; and 19 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin and Hiawatha Sisemore; and sisters, Naomi Sisemore and Sally Maxey.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, with Harvey Bowen officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Lake Eufaula Post No. 8798 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Chapel in Tecumseh.

Loyd Leon Coleman

Depew resident Loyd Leon "Trapper" Coleman died Tuesday in Depew. He was 89.

Coleman was born July 1, 1909, in Paden to John and Elizabeth Betty (Shumard) Coleman.

He married Irene Meyer in Sapulpa on April 4, 1973.

He was a farmer and rancher as well as a member of the Independent Baptist Church in Davenport.

Survivors include his wife, Irene, of the home; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Coleman, Stroud, and John and Delma Coleman, Davenport; daughter, Rose Carpenter, Shawnee; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, a daughter, four brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at the Davenport Cemetery, with the Rev. Johnny Miller officiating under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Jimmy Earl Stone

Shawnee resident Jimmy Earl Stone died Monday at his home. He was 63.

Stone was born Oct. 3, 1935, in Pine Valley to Robert Jefferson and Edith (Manley) Stone.

He worked at Lanes Poultry in Granice, Ark., and he did oilfield work in Oklahoma until 1985. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Westside Baptist Church in Shawnee.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Roberta and Sonny Blackard, Shawnee, and Vicki Whitted, Paris, Texas; sons, John Michael Stone, Blossom, Texas, and Jerry Don Stone, Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepsons, Jerry Beaty, Haton, Ark., and Dale Beaty, Broken Bow; sister, Shirley Stone; grandchildren, Adam and Justin Blackard, Shawnee, Angela Mijares, Paris, Texas, Steven and Dustie Whitted, Paris, Texas, J.L. Beaty, Haton, Ark., Leigha and Whittnie Stone, Blossom, Texas, Andrew and Cash Beaty, Wewoka; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Mijares.

He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Bertie Stone; and brother, Bert Stone.

Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Little Cemetery, with the Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
