Ruth Speers

Asher resident Ruth Speers died Wednesday in Shawnee. She was 89.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Asher. Burial will be at the Wanette Cemetery.

Other arrangements are pending and will be announced by Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh.

William A. Manning

Shawnee resident William A. Manning died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 96.

Manning was born March 23, 1903, in Old Moral, to Hugh Davidson and Emma (Coots) Manning.

He married Maudie Alice Cathey on May 18, 1922, in Macomb. She preceded him in death in 1993.

He worked as a farmer. He was an employee at the U.S. Navy Base in Norman from 1943 until 1946. He also was employed with the Veterans Administration and retired in 1965. He was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Doris Manning, of the home, and Roy and Heather Manning, Northridge, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and George Bess, Tecumseh; sister, Gladys Davis, Norman; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Betty Manning, Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a grandson, two brothers and a sister.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest Strong officiating. Burial will be at Mars Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Lawrence Edwards Jr.

Lawrence Edwards Jr., 47, Earlsboro, died Tuesday in Seminole.

Edwards was born March 5, 1952, in Eloy, Ariz., to Lawrence Edwards Sr. and Eliza (Davis) Edwards.

He married Barbara Finch on Dec. 20, 1998, in Gainsville, Texas.

Edwards, who lived in the Shawnee area before moving to Earlsboro, worked for TDK in Shawnee. He also served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Edwards, of the home; daughter, Sandra Provo, Midwest City; brothers, Bill, Anaheim, Calif.; Larry, Denton, Texas; Louie and John, both of Shawnee; Lofton, Earlsboro; Frank, Brooksville; Juice, Stillwater; and Leslie, Garland, Texas; sisters, Gloria Alexander, Los Angeles, Calif., Jan Lawrence, Chandler, Ariz., and Val Stargel, Shawnee; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel.

Marilee (Cole) Montgomery

Shawnee resident Marilee (Cole) Montgomery died Wednesday at her home. She was 74.

Montgomery was born April 23, 1925, in Caddo to Clifford W. and Martha Ann (Love) Cole.

She married Freeman Montgomery July 15, 1946, in Earlsboro. He preceded her in death in 1993.

She was a retired licensed practical nurse. She was a member of University Baptist Church since 1954 and lived in Shawnee since 1946.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mickey Sehorn, Shawnee; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and LaNell Montgomery, John and Delores Montgomery, Grant and Michelle Montgomery, and Craig Montgomery, all of Shawnee, and Joe Don and Deborah Montgomery, Alma, Ark.; brother, Garnet Cole, Jenks; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two special nieces, Rhonda Knovak and Marsha Ferslew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Arlene Peters Walls; and brother, David Cole.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Garnet Cole officiating. The casket will be open until service time and will not be opened after the service. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Ruth Speers

Asher resident Ruth Speers, 89, died Wednesday in Shawnee.

Speers was born July 31, 1909, in Atoka County to Timothy L. and Mary (Russell) Ward.

She married Joseph Lessie Speers on Feb. 17, 1928. He preceded her in death in 1978.

She lived in Asher for more than 50 years and was a member of the Asher First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, mother and cook at Asher Public Schools.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Lee and Bruce Holt, Barbara and Darl Fowler, and Linda and Jack Coker, all of Asher, Kay and Glen Johnson, Broken Arrow, and Naomi and Bob Culp, Newcastle; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Gwen Speers, Del City; sister-in-law, Jessie Eckert, Asher; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Hale, and two sisters, Mary Nell Lapsley and Virginia Cook.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Asher First Baptist Church, with Brother Dewayne Johnson and Brother Adam Lamle officiating. Burial will be at the Wanette Cemetery.

Houston A. Grisham

Houston A. Grisham, Seminole, died Saturday at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was 72.

He was born Sept. 15, 1928, in Bakersfield, Mo., the son of James Monroe and Mollie (Climer) Grisham. He was a mechanic instructor at Tinker Air Force Base who retired in the late 1970s after 26 years of service.

On Aug. 19, 1950, he and Rita Burkhart were married in Ozark, Ark.

Grisham, a former Mason, had lived in Seminole most of his life.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Fred Grisham.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jerry Anson of Seminole; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Carla Grisham of Eufaula, Larry Grisham of Tulsa, Terry and Terrie Grisham of Tulsa and Randy and Janie Grisham of Wewoka; two brothers, Clifford Grisham of New Lima and Kenneth "Pete" Grisham of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Mary Hunter of Syracuse, N.Y., and Lorene Joyce, Shirley Trimarchi and Linda Jones, all of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Heather Anson, Ryan Anson, Jill Anson Malone, Dennis Grisham Jr., Kelsey Grisham and Jarrod Wood; one great-grandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole. The Rev. Ray Belford and Dr. James Sill will officiate. Burial will be in Little Cemetery.

Anita Louise Stidham

Anita Louise Stidham, 63, Chandler, died Saturday in Chandler.

The daughter of Argyle W. and Juanita Mae (Hopkins) Evans was born May 21, 1937, in Chandler.

On Sept. 27, 1969, she and M. K. Stidham were married in Chandler.

Mrs. Stidham, a lifelong Chandler resident, was a member of First Assembly of God Church and a beautician.

Preceding her in death were her father, mother-in-law and stepson.

Survivors include her husband of the home; her mother of Warwick, Okla.; a brother, Donald W. Evans of Warwick; two sisters, Phyllis Morton of Chandler and Janna Stieber of Warwick; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Star Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Doyle Seeley will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Chandler.

Carmen Mace

Carmen Mace, 78, Midwest City, died Saturday.

She was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Stilwell, the daughter of Hiram and Sadie (Mount) Allen.

She received her bachelor's degree in education from Northeastern in Talequah. She later received her master's degree in science education from a school in North Dakota.

On Nov. 29, 1945, she and J.R. Mace were married.

Mrs. Mace worked her way through college by selling shoes. She went on to be a chemist at DuPont during the war.

She taught in Tamaha, Wolf, Seminole and Centerview. She had completed her 31st year as a teacher in the 1976-1977 school term in Midwest City.

Mrs. Mace was awarded for her work several times, taking home awards such as the Outstanding Teacher for Midwest City Schools, Outstanding Biology Teacher of Oklahoma and Outstanding Teacher in National Secondary School Teachers Association.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association Executive Committee for six years. She was also a member of the Legislative Committee of the Oklahoma Education Association for seven years and held every office in the local education association.

She was chairman of the science department at Midwest City High School in 1976 to 1977.

Mrs. Mace was an active member of Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association and Oklahoma Retired Educators Association.

Upon her retirement, she continued to work to improve benefits for retired educators.

She taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church of Midwest City, where she was a member.

Preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Don and Dee Anne Mace of Shawnee, and Bill and Diane Mace of Okarche; six grandchildren, Greg Mace, Ethan Mace, Eric Lloyd, Jamin Mace, Lauren Mace and Jack Mace, and one great-grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Midwest City. The Rev. Bob Kelly will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Memory Gardens.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Homes, Del City.

Anita Teeples

Former Meeker resident Anita Teeples died Monday in Sand Springs, Okla. She was 39.

She was born Nov. 25, 1961, to Herschel "Pete" and Betty Teeples.

Survivors include her parents, of Meeker; a son, Nicholas Johnson, Meeker; a daughter, Stephanie Johnson, Meeker; a brother, Michael Rowe of Salem, Ore., and two sisters, Johnie Joan Baldwin of Petaluma, Calif., and Tammy Teeples of Sand Springs, Okla.

Services are pending with Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Prague.

Walker Butts

Walker Butts, 70, Shawnee, died Tuesday in Oklahoma City..

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Other information is pending with Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Charles T. Henry

Charles T. Henry, 65, Shawnee, died Tuesday. Services are pending with Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Capitolia (Skillern) Moran

La Jolla, Calif., resident Capitolia (Skillern) Moran died Wednesday in a La Jolla hospital. The former longtime Seminole resident was 83.

Mrs. Moran was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Milburn to Jefferson Otis and Essie (Quaid) Skillern.

She married Howard Wilson Moran on Dec. 26, 1937, in Milburn. He preceded her in death in 1968.

She was a school teacher who taught in Seminole County for 40 years. She retired after teaching for 42 years. She also was a member of D.A.R. and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her son, Howard Wilson Moran Jr., Huntsville, Texas; daughter, Tanya Chen, La Jolla, Calif.; sister, Eudean Beebe, Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
