Virgil Riley Jordan

Virgil Riley Jordan, Shawnee, died May 24 in Fort Gibson. He was 82.

Jordan was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Shawnee, to Ephrain Henry and Mary Loretta (Lee) Jordan.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Shawnee.

Jordan is survived by five daughters, Lori McCann, Fort Smith, Ark.; Jackie Miles, Winter Park, Fla.; Pamela Martin, Fort Gibson; Carol Sue, California; Teresa Jo, Texas; two sons, Joseph Carol Taylor, California; Larry Jordan, Orchard, Wash.; three brothers, James L. Jordan, Lodi, Calif.; Clifford Wayne Jordan, Sandia, Texas; Don Lavert Jordan, Jamul, Calif.; two sisters, Gertrude Isadora McMurphy, Rialto, Calif.; Thelma Lee Biggs, Shawnee; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held May 26 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, with Chaplain Phil Pack officiating. Services were under the direction of Millsap Funeral Service of Fort Gibson.

Homer L. Williams

Homer L. Williams of Shawnee died Wednesday. He was 66.

He was born May 26, 1934, in Macomb. He was the son of Martin and Lydia (Ferree) Williams.

He attended school at Macomb and was a graduate of Macomb High School. A lifelong resident of Pottawatomie County, he was reared in Macomb and had resided in Shawnee since 1958.

On Oct. 4, 1959, he married Wyema Sharp at Etowah Baptist Church west of Macomb. He was currently working at the Wood Pressure Group (formerly known as Barton Valve).

He had also worked for Welex, Westinghouse, Sylvania and Williams Transmission. He also owned H&L Sharpening as a side business and hobby.

Williams served with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Velta Blake Vice and one brother, Troy Williams.

Survivors include his wife, Wyema Williams of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, LeeAnn and Kirk Merrell of Edmond; Brenda and Greg Deathrage of Shawnee; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Terri Williams of Shawnee; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Fred and Mabel Williams of Shawnee; Ferrell Williams of Macomb; one sister, Maryane Tate of Shawnee; five grandchildren, Susan Williams, Colter Williams, Korbin Williams, Jackson Deathrage and Derrick Deathrage and numerous other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Coker officiating. Burial will be at Prairie View Cemetery.

Opal Hand

Opal Hand died Wednesday in Cushing. She was 81.

She was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Titanic. She was the daughter of John Henry and Millie (Richards) Orr.

She was a resident of Stroud since 1964. She previously lived in California and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Stroud.

Mrs. Hand worked as a cook in Stroud for many years. She was married to Herbert Hand on April 3, 1939, in Chandler.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, parents, one daughter, Patricia Quinn, and one brother.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Hand of Stroud; James Hand of Hemet, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth Simon of Carney; Judy Pittman of Stanfield, Ariz.; two brothers, Hardy Orr of Paden; Lonnie Orr of Prague; three sisters, Lois Carter of Stroud; Helen White of Stroud; Alta Brown of Prague; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Stroud Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Christian officiating. Services are directed by Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.

Anna Balcer

Anna Balcer died Monday in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was 84.

She was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Catherine (Gurniak) Pascko and Alexander Pascko.

She was married in 1939 to Maj. Frank A. Balcer, a teacher for 40 years at Detroit's Chadsey High School. He preceded her in death in 1965.

She was the mother of Kathleen Balcer-Messner of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Victoria Elizabeth Balcer of Dallas, Texas.

A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. today at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Harrah with burial following in St. Theresa Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Ann Arbor Cat Clinic, 3690 Packard, Ann Arbor, Mich. 48108. Arrangements by Asa Smith Funeral Home, Harrah.

Polly A. Thompson

Polly A. Thompson, 86, Dale, died Thursday at a Purcell hospital.

She was born June 26, 1913, in Minor Hill, Tenn. She was the daughter of Charlie and Lizzie Smith.

She was employed at Sylvania Electric. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker.

She married William L. Thompson Aug. 4, 1935, in McLoud. She was a member of the Dale Church of Christ.

She moved to Dale with her parents in 1919.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lanny and Starla Thompson, Dale; three grandchildren, Devin, Ashley and Christi Thompson, Dale; two sisters, Janie Hunt, Wayne; Kay Shelton, Portland, Ore.; one brother, Archie Smith, Minor Hill, Tenn. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dewayne Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Dale Cemetery.

Herbert J. Alford Sr.

Herbert J. Alford Sr. of Shawnee died Thursday at a local hospital. He was 86.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Johnson Cemetery with Rev. Ellis Rolette officiating. Burial will be at Johnson Cemetery, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.

Ronald Gene Bates

Former Shawnee resident Ronald Gene "Ronnie" Bates died Tuesday at his Sapulpa home. He was 57.

Bates was born Nov. 5, 1943, in Tishomingo to Clyde and Lorene Bates. He attended school in Shawnee and Del City.

He was a carpenter in the Tulsa area for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

Survivors include his parents, Clyde and Lorene Bates, Shawnee; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Lou Bates, Boyd, Mont.; Robert and Dohna Bates, Sallisaw; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Kurt Buntin, Duke, Okla.; four nieces and two nephews; friend, Patsy; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Bond officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Bertha Maybelle Archer

Bertha Maybelle Archer of Shawnee died Wednesday in Oklahoma City. She was 83.

She was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Maud to Walter Lee Wornock and Lydia (Slape) Miles. She married Theodore Archer Dec. 27, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio.

She moved from Watertown, N.Y., to Shawnee in 1966.

Mrs. Archer, who retired as a seamstress in 1993, was a member of the Church of God.

Her husband preceded her in death Aug. 22, 1994. Also preceding her in death were her mother, father, son James Earl and one great-grandchild.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Harold Jennings of Shawnee; a sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Preston Abbot of Shawnee; two grandsons, Adam James Jennings and wife, Tonya, of Tecumseh; Travis Jennings of Shawnee, six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other family members.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the East Oak Church of God, Maud, with the Rev. Odell Vanderburg officiating. Burial will follow in Cummings Cemetery under the direction of Knight Funeral Home, Maud.

Odecye Mae Bailey

Services for Odecye Mae Bailey, Oklahoma City, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Baggerley South Funeral Home, Oklahoma City.

Burial will follow in the Moore Cemetery. Viewing will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bailey died Thursday.

She was born July 14, 1927, to Claburn Lee and Lizzie Belle McClure Roundtree in Drake.

She graduated from Dougherty High School in 1944.

After World War II, she moved to Oklahoma City where she met Arthur Lee Bailey. They were married Jan. 31, 1947.

After a long career with Montgomery Wards as a credit manager, she retired in 1983.

Mrs. Bailey then had a second successful career as a crafter, exhibiting her needlework and doll-making abilities at craft shows and malls.

She was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jimmie Ray Roundtree, who died in the Korean conflict.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Bailey, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Nancy Bailey, Lone Wolf; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jody Cook, Moore; two brothers, Milburn Roundtree, Mimbres, N.M., and Bill Roundtree, Kingston; a granddaughter and her husband, Tricia and Daniel Lee Cook, Austin, Texas; and a grandson, Alan Cook of Moore.

Mary Lou Cooper

Stroud resident Mary Lou Cooper died Wednesday in her home at age 79 after a 55-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Meridian to Emmett Franklin and Maude (Kincaid) Groom. She graduated from Guthrie High School and attended Central State University.

She recently celebrated 60 years of marriage to John D. Cooper Sr. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two grandsons.

Survivors include her husband, John, of the home; one daughter, Clara Hodgens of Stroud; three sons, John D. Cooper Jr. and Charles Cooper, both of Stroud, and T. Zack Cooper of Los Angeles, Calif.; three brothers, Charles Groom of Stroud, Floyd Groom of Bristow, John Groom of Guthrie, 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Parks Brothers Chapel of Stroud with the Rev. Sandy Chase and the Rev. Jerry Murfin officiating. Burial will be in Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service.

James L. Lee
James L. Lee, Prague, died Thursday at the age of 95.

He was born June 3, 1903, in Johnsonville, Okla., to James R. and Linnie Ann (Williams) Lee.

Lee was reared in Oklahoma, later living in California, and returned to Oklahoma in 1997.

He was a farmer and a night watchman until his retirement in 1967.

He married Lilly Mabel Post on Nov. 13, 1923. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1980.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, George Lee; four brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by four daughters: Dorothy Whitt, Albuquerque, N.M.; Lois Gentry, Meeker; Carolyn Waldrop, Memphis, Tenn.; Gayle Ford, Decatur, Texas; three sons, James E. Lee and Glen Lee, both of Bakersfield, Calif., and Bob Lee, Prague; 35 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Ronald Lee officiating. Burial will be at Garden Grove Cemetery.
