Frank Manford Smith

Frank Manford Smith, retired from the United States Army, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2007 in Tulsa at the age of 76 years.

The son of the late George W. Smith and Florence Peak Smith, Frank was born on Apr. 18, 1931 in Siloam Springs, Ark. and was reared and educated in Oklahoma. After serving in the army for 25 years, he returned to Cushing and had lived here since. Frank attended the New Fellowship Church. He enjoyed listening to gospel music; the grand old opry, and spending time in the city park watching squirrels.

Survivors include his six children, Norma Real of Cushing, Anna Sams of Cushing, Karin Novotny of Stillwater, Theda DuVall of Valley Farms, Ariz., Tommy DuVall of Valley Farms, Ariz. and Ronnie Smith of Stillwater; two brothers, Jack Smith of Colo. and Gary Smith of Stillwater; thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, including Tekla Smith.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 2 P.M. in the Davis Memorial Chapel with Reverend Steve Orton, pastor of the New Fellowship Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.

Jim Shields

Jim Shields, longtime Cushing Public School employee, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2006 at the age of 57.

The son of Jimmie "Sarge" Shields and Christine Maxwell Shields, Jim was born on Jan. 2, 1949 in Odessa, TX. He lived in several different places while growing up and at the age of 13 moving to Stillwater where he graduated from Stillwater High School in 1967. He attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University receiving his Bachelors Degree, and later receiving his Masters Degree from Central State University.

Jim was united in marriage to Betty McCollum in 1969 and to this union two daughters, Jaime and Stephanie were born.

He started his coaching and teaching careers beginning in Cyril, OK and moving on to Frederick and Antlers before coming to Cushing in 1976. While in Cushing, Jim had served as an assistant in football, wrestling and baseball and had taught Algebra until 1982.

He currently held the position of Director of School Plant Management and was extremely proud of his staff he was in charge of on a daily basis. His staff was always willing to do whatever he asked them to do, which is why he enjoyed his job.

Jim married Willetta Gaskins on Sept. 19, 1986 in Cushing, and he acquired two sons, Mike and Reggie.

He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Cushing, OK and was currently a trustee of the Church; a member and past president of the Cushing Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; a member and past president OSPMA; and a member of the Cushing Country Club serving on the board for several years. Jim was an avid golfer and was proud to wear his ORANGE and BLACK, supporting both the Cushing Tigers and the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Survivors include his wife, Willetta of the home; his children, Jaime and Chantz Candler, Stephanie and Mike Czuba, Mike and Aryn Gaskins, and Reggie Gaskins; his father, Jimmie "Sarge" Shields; three brothers, Chris, Kieth and Mike Shields, his grandchildren, Caden and Carson Candler, Mackenzie and Mason Mills, Taylor and Patrick Czuba and Ryan Gaskins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the Cushing High School Auditorium with Reverend Ted Uhlig, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tom Hudson, Kent Hancock, Jack Hudgins, Clifford Case, Brian Floyd, Rick Page, Steve Flaming and Bill Wade.

Burial will follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Cemetery.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home.

Mack Neal Funk

Mack Neal Funk of Grove, Okla., a former Cushing resident, died July 16, 2007 at his home in Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2007 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home Chapel, Cushing, Okla. with Pastor Arthur Fox of the Covenant Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery (S.W. of Cushing).

Services have been entrusted to the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, OK.

Mack was born March 5, 1926 in Drumright, Okla. to Charles Franklin Funk and Goldie Lily Fay (Mills) Funk. Mack attended the Drumright schools and joined the United States Navy on May 26, 1944 and earned his Honorable Discharge on Apr. 10, 1946. While serving aboard the U.S.S. Pine Island AV-12 he saw foreign service and earned AS, SEC, and SIC ratings. On Sept. 7, 1949 Mack was united in marriage to Bula Maxine Dennis in the First Free Will Baptist Church in Cushing. Bula passed away on Feb. 11, 2005 in Grove. They lived in Borger, TX where Mack worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. for 10 years. They then moved to Pueblo, Colo. where Mack worked 23 years for CFI Steel Mills. After his retirement from CFI the Funk’s moved to Norman where Mack worked for the University of Oklahoma. Mack and Bula then moved to Cushing in 1996 before moving to Grove in 2004.

Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Ann Bogie and her husband William of Chicago, IL; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Camren of Agra and Norma Combs of Grove; his care givers, niece, Kathie Hanna and her husband Steve of Grove; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife Bula, Mack was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Leland, Bill, and Eugene; and six sisters, Madonna, Roella, Cora Fay, Betty, Margaurete, and Virginia.

Don Ryker

Funeral services for Don Ryker, Drumright, were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in the sanctuary of the Drumright First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Smith officiating, special music by Debbie Morse and Robin Wessell. Interment followed in the Drumright Oak Hill Cemetery with Kevin Burke, William Scribner, Lance Phillips, Tony Wessell, Chuck Dorsey and Wayne Niccum serving as casket bearers.

Don Ryker was born in Oilton, Okla. on Aug. 5, 1937 to the late Otto Royal Ryker and Sarah Mildred (Johnson) Ryker. He died on July 18, 2007 in Tulsa at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 13 days. He was raised and educated in Oilton, graduating from Oilton High School in 1956. He remained in Oilton until his marriage to Kay Dell Shelton on Feb. 15, 1963 after which they made their home in Drumright. He worked as a pulling unit operator for Tim Arnold until his retirement. Don was a “family man” and enjoyed spending time with his family. You would always see him at his grandchildren’s ball games and school events. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Allen Ryker in 2002, one brother, Bill Ryker, and three sisters, Delores Lorett, Karen Burris and Janice Deckard.

He is survived by his loving wife Kay Ryker of Drumright, daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and Bob Cummins, Drumright, Tracy Harrison, Cushing and Eddie Shelton, Lamont; six grandchildren: Trisha and Billy Brimmer, Kris Cummins, Jessica Ryker and Justin Ryker all of Drumright and Nick Harrison and Chelsea Harrison, both of Cushing; one great-grandson, Gavin Ray Brimmer of Drumright; three brothers, Roy and Belle Ryker, Yale, Leon and Carol Ryker, Ripley, Kenneth Ryker of Drumright; sister-in-law, Rose Mary Ryker, Cushing; two brothers-in-law: Bucky Burris of New Mexico and Jack and Juanita Lorett, Drumright and numerous other relatives and loving friends.

Mickey Ragland

Mickey Ragland, age 76, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007 in Cushing, Okla. She was born Dec. 26, 1930 in Tulsa, Okla. to Minta (Hollis) and Boyd Robinson.

Survivors include her son Steve Bell and wife Rose of Cushing, brother John Robinson and wife Dorothy of Springdale, Ark.

Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Tulsa on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 11 a.m.

Services have been entrusted to the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Okla.

Mary L. Pettit

Mary L. Pettit passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007 in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 74 years.

The daughter of the late Theodore Rhamy and Martha Blackburn Rhamy, Mary was born on Jan. 23, 1933 in Cushing, and was reared and educated here. She was united in marriage to Harley Pettit on May 31, 1950 in Cushing. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and will be remembered as a very kind and generous person.

Survivors include her husband of over 57 years, Harley Pettit of the home; three children, Mike Pettit and his wife Janie of Anadarko, Okla., Cindy Engalls and her husband Russell of Bozeman, Mont., and Marvin Pettit and his wife Kristen of Escondido, Calif.; two sisters Irene Goodman of Cushing and Theda Amerson of Chickasha; four brothers, T.A. Rhamy and Kenny Rhamy both of Ponca City, Theodore “Ted” Rhamy of Dardanelle, Ark., and John Rhamy of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. in the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church with Reverend Larry Huff, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery, south of Glencoe.

Lainie Shae Adams

Lainie Shae Adams, infant daughter to Jennifer Adams and Delaney Stephens, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2007 at the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 in the Highland Cemetery, Oilton, Okla.

Services have been entrusted to the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Oilton, Okla.

Verl Lanora Kidder

Verl Lanora Kidder, 98, of Stillwater, Okla. died on Monday, July 30, 2007 in Tulsa, Okla. She will be available for viewing from 2 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 and from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007. No funeral services will be held. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Cushing, Okla. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Mar. 5, 1909 in Ripley, Okla. to Jasper Lee Kidder and Nellie May (Burnham) Kidder.

She worked as a secretary for Goulds Pump Company for many years. She loved to read and crochet and she enjoyed traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lawrence Kidder, and one sister, Mona Carothers.

She is survived by one brother, Bill Kidder of Tulsa, Okla., and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Terry Jay Bentley

Terry Jay Bentley, a former Cushing resident, passed away at his home in Oklahoma City surrounded by family and friends Monday, July 30, 2007 after a long battle of cancer. He was the son of Patsy Bentley and the late Jess Bentley of Cushing, Okla. Terry was a 1971 graduate of Cushing High School.

He was survived by Shelee Bentley, his wife of five years, mother, Patsy Bentley of Cushing, Okla., two daughters Kriston Maker and her husband John of Newcastle, Okla.; Ashlee Creek of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Madeline, Grayson and Meredith Maker; one brother John Bentley and his wife Phyl of Norman; one sister Jane Hysaw and her husband Ray of Cushing, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Jessie Bentley of Cushing.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Aug. 2,2007, at 10 am at The John M. Ireland Funeral & Chapel, 120 South Broadway, Moore, Oklahoma.

Dora Ellen (Derr) Jackson

Dora Ellen (Derr) Jackson, 97, went to be with her lord and savior on Sat. July 28, 2007in Beaver Creek, Ohio where she has lived for the past five years. She was born in Engles, Okla. on Apr. 12,1910. She was raised as an orphan until she married William Derr at age 18. They were married for 42 years and raised thirteen children.

She is survived by one son Raymond Derr of Beaver Creek, OH, eight daughters; Mary Henshaw of Drumright, Okla., Fern Dennis of Drumright, Okla., Jessie Castleberry of Perkins, Okla., Dora Covey of Oklahoma City, Okla., Alice Scholten of Durango, Colo., Anna Ely of Stillwater, Okla., Rosie Benz of Marshall, Okla., and Susan Moor of Stillwater, Okla. Also survived by twenty-eight grand children, forty-seven great grandchildren, and thirty-one great great grand children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands William Derr and Roy Jackson, four sons; James Derr, William Derr, Edward Derr and one still born son, one daughter Martha McClenndon, four grand children; Hope Derr, Donna Marie Derr, Ray Ray Scholten and Rita Kay Castleberry, and one great great grandchild Joseph Craven.

She was a long time resident of Cushing, Okla. where she will have services on Sat Aug. 4, 2007 at 11 am at Palmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Yale Greenwood Cemetery.

Oscar “Tiny” Henry Hazlip

Oscar “Tiny” Henry Hazlip was born to Albert “Nubbin” and Anna (Hard) Hazlip on Apr. 3, 1923 in Olive. He died at Baptist Memorial Hospital on July 30, 2007 after a short illness.

He grew up in Hominy and graduated from Norfolk High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941 at the age of 17 in Dallas, Texas. He served with VP-22 and VP - 24 during WWII as a plane captain flying the Navy’s PBY5 and PBYA’s. He was in Perth, Australia when his squadron’s aircraft were attacked by the Japanese. He also saw action in Okinawa and the Marianna’s.

After WWII, “Tiny” served in many squadrons as an aircraft mechanic, working on AD and PBY propeller type aircraft and F9, F2H, F4, and F8 type jets. He served on the east coast in Norfolk, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida; made Mediterranean tours on the USS Boxer and the USS midway. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam wars as well. Lt. Hazlip spent that latter part of his naval career on the west coast serving at NHS Miramar, MCAS El Toro, USS Yorktown, and finally aboard the USS Constellation retiring in 1971. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, Distinguished Service Order, President Unit Citation, as well as many other awards.

“Tiny” married Midge Thompson in 1943, she passed away in 1996.

In 1998 he met and married Patricia Baumgarten, she passed away in 2000. He then married Betty Lou Cole in 2002.

He is survived by his wife Betty Lou, a sister Betty Ann Manley, brother Bill Hazlip, three step-son‚s Virgil Baumgarten, Marvin Baumgarten, William Baumgarten, step-daughter Kayleen Haun, sixteen step-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren, nephew Ron Stallard, and several nieces and nephews, family and friends.“Tiny” was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Neil Hazlip and Otis Hazlip, sisters Carol Sue Mehrens and Shirley Stallard.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday Aug. 3, 2007 at the Christ Fellowship in Oilton. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Oilton.
