Dr. James E. Hurley

He was born Sept. 30, 1929, to James Y. and Lela (Harris) Hurley in Morristown, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. He is survived by two nephews of Dallas, Texas.

He received a bachelor's degree from Tusculum University and a doctor of philosophy in microbiology from Vanderbilt University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 through 1955, working at the National Naval Medical School in Bethesda, Md. He helped start the microbiology laboratory at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Hurley joined the OBU faculty in 1962 as an associate professor of biology and was promoted to professor of biology in 1968. He was instrumental in constructing the science curriculum at OBU and taught several key courses.

He received the University's two highest honors: the Distinguished Teaching Award, presented at OBU's 1982 Commencement, and the Meritorious Service Award, presented at Commencement in 1984.

Hurley, who was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2003, was one of the most respected professors on the OBU campus and among educators across the nation. During his time on Bison Hill, hundreds of biology and pre-medical students won admission to medical school or other graduate studies, and an exceptionally high percentage of OBU students have had the opportunity to continue their studies and eventually enter medical or scientific programs. Many of these former students contributed to the founding of an endowed chair in his name following his retirement in May 1999.

Besides his academic work, which included sponsoring a number of honor societies and events on campus, Dr. Hurley was active with the Shawnee Little Theatre and theater on campus. He was a longtime member of University Baptist Church, where he taught a class for adults. After retirement, he became active in Habitat for Humanity in Shawnee and he helped create The Silverbacks, a discussion group for retired OBU faculty.

In a recent interview Hurley said, "Life is a process. Everything builds like the season, in small steps. Life is not as much a momentary thing like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, but rather a whole process of learning and discovering."

Memorial gifts may be made to the James E. Hurley Professorship of Biology or the Hurley Science Scholarship. For details, contact the OBU development office at 405-878-2703.
