Elsie Lea Dean Smith

Elsie Lea Dean Smith, longtime Cushing resident, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 in the Resthaven Nursing Home at the age of 79 years.

The daughter of the late William C. Craig and Avis A. Bailey Craig, Lea Dean was born on November 5, 1926 in Signal Hill, Texas. She came to Cushing with her parents and family and was reared and educated here, attending Happy Valley School. She was united in marriage to J.W. Johnson on Feb. 8, 1943 and to this union five children, Marilyn, Cleo, Leora, Terry and Beverly were born. She married John Vernon Smith on Dec. 28, 1995.

Lea Dean spent many years babysitting and care giving. She then went to work in Stillwater for her daughter in her cake and candy shop, Art and Marilyn's Makins for many years. She was a member of the New Hope Fellowship Church. She enjoyed collecting dolls, Avon bottles and for many years had done sewing for all of her family.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn McFarlin and her husband Art of Stillwater, Cleo Johnson and his wife Dawna of Cushing, Leora Barrows of Cushing, Terry Johnson and his wife Charlotte of Chickasha and Beverly Sneed and her husband Richard of Land'O Lakes, FL; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at 2 P.M. in the Fairlawn Cemetery with Pastor Stephen Orton, of the New Hope Fellowship Church, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Hospice in her memory.

Leola Mae Smith

Leola Mae Smith, lifelong resident of the Cushing area, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006 at her residence at the age of 85 years. The daughter of the late Walter F. Miller and Leola Prough Miller, Leola was born on Dec. 26, 1920 in Carney, Okla. and was reared in Lincoln and Payne counties. She was united in marriage to Roy Richard Smith on Oct. 21, 1936 in Chandler, Okla. To this union six children, Pat, F.M., Sharon, Linda, Carol and Sue, were born. Roy preceded her in death in July of 1985. Leola helped Roy farm and they ran the Smith's Laundry in Perkins from 1955 to 1958. Her greatest joy was raising her six children. She attended church in Agra and Tryon. She also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include five daughters, Pat Hopkins and her husband Willard of Perkins, Sharon Mays and her husband Alex of Tulsa, Linda Jones and her husband Johnny of Oklahoma City, Carol Disney of Durant and Sue Leader and her husband Rick of Perkins; one son, F.M. Smith and his wife Janice of Wagner; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Forrest "Blackie" Miller and his wife Lee of Bixby; one sister, Flossie Kyser of Chandler; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers; Robert Miller, George Miller, Jack Miller, Richard Miller, David Miller and Gerald Miller and two sisters; Ruth Chastain and Dolly Jones.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 in the Wellston Cemetery at 2 P.M. with Reverend Charles Wheeler officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Judith Karmin Hospice, 915 S. Main, Stillwater, Okla. 74074.

Clemine L. Scott

Clemine L. Scott, known to her family and friends as "Tootie", passed away early Thursday morning, October 20, 2005 at the age of 82 years.

The daughter of the late Jim and Mollie Tinnie, Tootie was born on October 10, 1923 in Litchfield, OK and was reared and educated in the Cushing and Drumright area.

She was united in marriage to Eugene Scott in 1938 and to this union nine children were born.

Tootie was a very loving and caring lady who enjoyed spending time and cooking for her family and friends. She enjoyed working in her garden, raising flowers and watching birds.

Survivors include her children, Tammy Martin of Cushing, Ray Scott and his wife Leah of Cushing, Juanita Ferrell and her husband Roland of Claremore, Pat Davidson of Agra and Jackie Scott and his friend Gloria George of Cushing; two brothers, Jeff Tinnie of Drumright and Roy Greer of Cushing; 20 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four children, Mark Scott, Carol Goforth, Leonard Scott and Norma Mann; one sister, three brothers and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the First Freewill Baptist Church with Reverend John Baumert, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lawson Cemetery at Yale.

Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home.

Arnold Daymon Simon, Jr.

Arnold Daymon Simon, Jr., 73 a resident of Cocoa, Florida passed away on Oct. 22, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Green Cove Springs, Florida.

Daymon was born on June 26, 1932 in Terlton, Oklahoma to Arnold Daymon Simon Sr. and Susan Ethel Adkinson Simon. He lived in Yale, Oklahoma as a child, and then his family moved to Pryor, Oklahoma. He attended Pryor High School, where he played football until he was injured and had to quit.

Daymon originally worked as a mechanic and attendant at various garage/gas stations around Pryor, then enlisted in the Air Force during his senior year in High School. He was trained first as a propeller engine mechanic, then a jet engine mechanic.

After leaving the Air Force, he was employed by MacDonnell- Douglas in Tulsa as a jet engine mechanic, and began training to be a rocket engine mechanic.

He married Martha Virginia Claggett of Big Cabin, Oklahoma on March 21, 1953. They had two sons, Arnold Daymon Simon III, of Cocoa, and Mark Daniel Simon, who preceded Daymon on December 18, 1977.

During layoffs at MacDonnel-Douglas, Daymon worked as a dump truck driver and Police Officer in Chelsea, Oklahoma. Daymon went to work for North American Aviation in 1964, and in 1965, transferred to Cape Kennedy in Florida to work on the rocket engines of the Gemini spacecraft program. He then transferred to Apollo program and became a Spacecraft Mechanic.

He retired in 1996, Martha preceded him in death on April 10, 2001.

Survivors include his sister, Vivian Gann of Pryor,Ok. Martha Hankins of Waldren Ark. And Melissa Honel of Broken Arrow, and his son Arnold of the home.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Yale.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday 2:00 P.M., Oct. 25, 2005 at the Lawson Cemetery, Yale, OK.

Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer-Marler Funeral Home Yale, OK.

David Michael Fick

David Michael Fick passed away Oct. 23, 2005. He went to be with Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer. David was born July 24, 1942 in Cushing, Oklahoma, the son of Edwin and Mildred Fick. He earned an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering from Wichita State University. He served in the Army as chaplain's assistant at Ft. Bliss, Texas, Dave married his sweetheart, Ruthie, Aug. 17, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas, and they enjoyed raising two fine sons who have been great blessings in their lives. Dave was a faithful employee of Eaton Electrical for 30 years and worked as electrical sales engineer until retiring in Dec., 2004 Dave was an avid golfer and fan of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. One of his great joys was serving the Lord in Christian ministries at Metropolitan Baptist Church. David is survived by his wife Ruth and sons, Michael and Timothy and daughter-in-law, Michelle. Also brothers, Jim Fick, and Ken Fick and sister, Mary Ann McMurdo. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 29, 10 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 7201 W. Britton Road, Oklahoma City, OK. Internment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Cushing, Oklahoma. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 28, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Vondel L. Smith & Son, 13125 N. MacArthur. Memorial donations may be made to Metropolitan Baptist Church.

James Edward Williams

James Edward Williams, 58 of Stillwater, died Wednesday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Both the service and interment will be held at the gravesite.

Charles A. Blackburn

Charles A. Blackburn, age 88 of Yale, died on December 6, 2005 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, at the Lawson Cemetery, Yale, Oklahoma. Brother Michael Dershem will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer and Marler Funeral Home, Yale, Oklahoma.

Charles was born on September 9, 1917 in Yale, Oklahoma to Albert and Ruth (Eagles) Blackburn. Charles grew up in the Yale area and attended a few years of college in the agriculture field. Charles was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII. He married Lola Green on April 3, 1980 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Charles worked for the State of Oklahoma where he built bridges. He was a member of the American Legion and a life long member of the D.A.V. Charles loved to fish and garden. He also enjoyed cutting wood and riding four wheelers.

Charles is survived by his wife Lola Blackburn of the home and his brother Bruce Blackburn of Perkins.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Monce Claire, and his sister Zalia Lynn.

Chambers

Mary Champlin Chambers died Wednesday at her home in Tulsa. A memorial service was held Saturday at the St. Simeon's Episcopal Home in Tulsa. Inurnment will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Altus at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

She was born Oct. 26, 1910 as one of nine children to Roy and Francis Champlin of Lawton. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1932 and taught school in Lawton. She married her husband, Lawrence in 1933. They moved to Altus in 1943 where they were active in the St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Her husband died in 1993 and she moved to Tulsa one year later. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and PEO.

Survivors include two sisters, Eleanor Denny of Lawton and Nancy Hall of Phoenix; two daughters, Susan Adams and her husband Ed of Tulsa and Jane Kramer and her husband, Jerry of Dallas; a son, Larry and his wife, Cheryl of Tulsa; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family requests donations be made in her memory to St. Simeon's, 2701 N. Cincinnati, Tulsa, Ok. or St Paul's Episcopal Church, 721 N. Thomas, Altus, Ok. 73521.

Coffman

Sidney Durrell Coffman died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Mangum City Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mangum Church of Christ with Ken Hamilton and Todd McRay officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home.

Coffman was born Feb. 10, 1910, in Granite. He farmed with his family. After high school, he attended college in Cordell. He then began teaching. He eventually became principal at Liberty and City View Schools and coached girls basketball and boys baseball.

He served in the Navy for two years and became a rural mail carrier for the Mangum Post Office for 20 years. He was also an electrician.

He was a longtime golfer, a Mason and a member of the Elk's Lodge.

In 1987, he married Sally Kunow in Granite. His first wife, Ruth, preceded him in death in 1985.

Coffman was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Ruth.

Survivors include: his wife, Sally; children and their spouses, Peggy Thomas of Anchorage, Alaska, Sidney and Mary Coffman of Edmond, Donald Glenn and Judy Coffman of Granbury, Texas; brothers, John Coffman and his wife Rita of Granite, Harlan Coffman of Greenville, Texas; sisters, Kate Ledbetter and Sara Gore, both of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Darby

Steven Marshall Darby, 49, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Duke First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rusty Foreman and the Rev. Everett Smalts officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Darby was born Jan. 26, 1952, in Altus, to H.R. "Tad" and Hazel (Marshall) Darby. He grew up in Duke, moving to Altus while in high school and graduated from Altus High School. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and worked in the family business, Darby Furniture for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Duke First Baptist Church, the Salvation Army, the Rotary Club and was an active member and enjoyed golf at the Elk's Golf and Country Club. He also served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army.

Darby was preceded in death by his father, H.R. "Tad" Darby; an uncle, Lloyd B. Darby; aunt and uncle, Lloyd and Verone Glenn and an aunt, Jo Marshall.

Survivors include: his mother, Hazel Darby of Altus; aunts and uncles, Howard and Mary Darby, Patsy Darby, Don and Vernie Marshall and James "Speedy" Marshall. He is also survived by many cousins, other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made in his name to the First Baptist Church of Duke.
