Virginia Dell Thomas
Virginia Dell Thomas, 81, of Shawnee died Monday at a local hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Blanchard to Willie and Frances (Newville) Bailey.

She married Farris Edwards and later Lester William Thomas.

She was a member of Tecumseh Church of Christ.

She had been a Shawnee resident for the past several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sharon Jones; two sisters, Willie Motley and LouElla Bailey; and two brothers, James Bailey and Joe Bailey.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Jerry and Richard Miller and Myra and David Campbell, all of Shawnee; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Kimila and Richard Purdom of Shawnee, Richard and Deborah Miller of Harrah, Kelli and Guy Chamblin of Shawnee, Jennifer and Walter Cartwright of Shawnee, Scott and Brigetta Cheatwood of Norman, Chuck and Karen McMakin of Tulsa, and LaShawn Lake; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Bailey of Seminole; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Ollie Switzer of Oklahoma City, Helen Kennan of Edmond and Nellie and Gene Longworth of Stillwater; a brother-in-law, Elmer Motley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Liza Jones
Liza Jones, 90, of Tecumseh died Sunday in Shawnee.

She was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Macomb, to Rufus and Laura (Freeman) Trammell.

Jones was reared in Macomb and lived in Pearson before moving to Tecumseh, where she lived since 1962.

She married Edd A. Jones May 19, 1952, in Sherman, Texas. He died on July 6, 1994.

She was a homemaker.

Jones was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Jones also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Bob, Alvis, Lester and Buster; a sister, Nora Ritchie; a grandson, Dean Jones; and a great-grand-daughter, Angel Carter.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Herman and Linda Jones of Tecumseh; a daughter, Johanna Lutters of Tecumseh; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Lewis of Shawnee and Annie Dubbel of California; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Cooper Funeral Chapel of Tecumseh with the Rev. Tracy Schumpert officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Dona Kelly Broyles
Dona Kelly Broyles, 48, of Tulsa died Monday in a Waco Hospital.

She was born Nov. 11, 1953, in Waco, Texas, to Rufus L. Kelly and Martha L. Burns Kelly.

She married Gil Broyles on May 23, 1975, in Ennis, Texas.

Broyles graduated from Ennis High School in 1972.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1976. She received a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Tulsa School of Law in 1983.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, and for the past several years, was a professor of law at the University of Tulsa School of Law.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus L. Kelly.

She is survived by her husband, Gil Broyles of Tulsa; one son, Andrew Broyles of Houston; her mother, Martha Kelly of Waco, Texas; one brother, Ronny Buckley of Chatfield, Texas; one sister, Gwenn Kelly of Waco, Texas; niece, Courtney Hopkins of Crowell, Texas; nephew, Jason Buckley of Houston, Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pecan Grove Funeral Home Chapel, 3124 Robinson Dr. of Waco, Texas with the Rev. Dick Moody officiating.

Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco. The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.

Zo Carolyn Shults
Zo Carolyn Shults, 68, of Shawnee died Monday at a local hospital.

She was born Oct. 25, 1933, in Shawnee to Albert and Gladys (Myers) Crawford.

She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1951 and then trained as a registered nurse at Muskogee, Okla., completing her degree in 1955.

She worked at ACH Hospital and later transferred to Shawnee Regional Hospital, where she was nursing supervisor until her retirement.

She married Charles Shults July 7, 1960, in Shawnee.

She was a member of the Dale Church of Christ and a life-long resident of Shawnee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Phil Roy Crawford.

Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Shults of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Paula Zo and Tom Prewitt of Shawnee; one son, Stephen Shults and his friend Jo Ann of Earlsboro; three grandchildren, Cameron Snider, Cuyler Snider and Brittany Prewitt; one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Mary Crawford of Shawnee; one aunt, Pauline Dickerson of Falls Church, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with Dewayne Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery of Meeker.

Vester Roy Dodson
Vester Roy Dodson, 90, of Macomb died Monday in Tecumseh.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Dodson and Frank Dodson of Oklahoma City; five daughters, Peggy Dodson of Shawnee, Evelyn Lawson of Dickson, Mary Leach of Tecumseh, Vesta Yates of Temple, Texas, and Ethel Raines of Shawnee; two sisters, Evie Straughn of Ardmore and Ethel Hayes of Purcell; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at McGee Cemetery of Stratford with the Rev. Richard Atzbach officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Stratford.

Judy Faye Matthews
Judy Faye Matthews, 60, of Shawnee died Monday.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Neal Cemetery with Don Poe officiating.

Further information is pending and will be announced by Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Nola Mathews
Nola Mathews, 87, of Harrah died Sunday.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Caroline Mathews; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Royce Skaggs, of York, Pa.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Michael and Shari Mathews of Oklahoma City; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Pamela and Jim Bosarge of Birmingham, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Harrah First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah.

Ralph Leroy Mays
Longtime Earlsboro cattle rancher Ralph Leroy Mays died Wednesday, July 23, at a local nursing home. He was 80 years old.

Mays was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Wardspring, Okla., to Dilla Fate and Myrtle Marie (Richardson) Mays.

He married Lorece Shumard on Sept. 29, 1941, in Atoka.

Mays owned and worked at a service station on Beard Street in Shawnee from 1952 to1953 and worked at Haney's Service Station on Main in 1958. He also owned and operated Mays Outlet Mart 1972-1978.

A cattle rancher for 40 years, he was a member of the Cattlemen's Association. He was also a charter member of the Earlsboro Lions Club.

Mays was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Thelma Ruth Martin; four brothers, Homer Mays, Clinton Mays, Bill Mays, Howard Dean Mays; a granddaughter, Jeanette Hasbell; and a great-grandson, Terry Don Rowe.

He is survived by his wife Lorece of the home; three children and one daughter-in-law, Glynda Carter, Pamela Mays, both of Shawnee; Jerry and Paula Mays of Earlsboro; sister and brother-in-law, Tressa and Perry Anderson of Fresno, Calif.; brother-in-law, Chester Martin of Tulare, Calif.; sister-in-law Vesta Mays of Shawnee; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.

Service will be at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with Charles Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Jeanette L. Post
Jeanette L. Post of Tecumseh died Thursday, July 24, in Shawnee at the age of 85.

She was born April 30, 1918, in Tecumseh to Austin B. and Abigail (Montague) Lewis. She was raised in Tecumseh and she graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1936.

She married Robert N. Post on Feb. 1, 1964, in Palestine, Ill. He died April 20, 1990. She was a data processing supervisor for General Dynamics in San Diego, Calif., until she retired in 1979.

Post was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and was part of the Tecumseh Alumni Association.

She is also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Loraine Barton.

She is survived by her nephew, Monte L. Barton of Mississippi.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Darryl Tiller officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery.

DeMelvin Booker
DeMelvin Booker of Shawnee died Sunday, July 20, in Oklahoma City at the age of 53.

Booker is survived by his mother, Nadine Booker; three brothers, Rodney Booker and DeWayne Booker, both of Tulsa, and Phil Booker of Oklahoma City; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Talton and Tim Crawford of Midwest City, and many other relatives.

Service will take place at 11 a.m. today at the Farrall and Bell Church of Christ, 25 E. Farrall, Shawnee. Cordell Banks will officiate. Burial will be in Earlsboro Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Temple and Sons Funeral Directors, Inc., Oklahoma City.

Carol Sue (Baker) Pearson
Carol Sue (Baker) Pearson of Seminole died Wednesday at Seminole Hospital. She was 43.

She is survived by her mother, Barbara Sue Baker of Columbia, Tenn.; one daughter, Amy Villa of Mangum; two sisters, Brenda Underwood of Columbia, Tenn., and Penny Staley of Bloomfield, N.M.; two brothers, Bobby Dill of Seminole and William Baker of Dallas, Texas, and two grandchildren.

There will be a private family service. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 310, Seminole OK 74818.

Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Dorothy L. (Palmer) Lumley
Dorothy L. (Palmer) Lumley died Saturday, July 19, at St. Joseph Hospital in Stockton, Calif. She was 73.

Lumley is survived by her husband, Robert Lumley of the home; one nephew, Berry Scutt, and one sister-in-law, T.J. Bierd.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Little Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home, Shawnee.

Carolyn L. Driskill
Tecumseh resident Carolyn L. Driskill died Thursday, July 24, in Shawnee. She was 59.

She was born Sept. 30, 1943, in Dustin to Logan H. and Cecil (Stephens) Watts. She attended Wewoka Schools and was a longtime Shawnee and Tecumseh area resident. She had lived in Tecumseh since 1996.

On Jan. 21, 1984, she married C. James Driskill in Gainesville, Texas. She was a homemaker and was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Tecumseh and the YMCA water aerobics.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, C. James Driskill, of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda K. and Peter Hansen of Kingston and Tina Keith of Bethel, eight grandchildren and many others.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mack Peercy officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Charles Lawrence Ticknor
Charles Lawrence "Big Larry" Ticknor of Shawnee died Thursday, July 24, at the age of 64.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.
