Frances Bowers
Shawnee resident Frances Bowers, 73, died Friday, Sept. 26, in Shawnee.

She was born, July 27, 1930, in Maud to Austin and Lucy (Hammack) Crownover. She was reared in Macomb and attended Willard Schools. She lived in Tecumseh several years prior to living in Freeport, Texas, for 26 years. She returned to Tecumseh in 1996 and later lived in Shawnee for a brief period.

Bowers worked as a housekeeper supervisor with Intermedics Pacemaker. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Shawnee and also of First Baptist Church of Tecumseh.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; two sisters; a daughter-in-law, Lorie Bowers, and a great-granddaughter, Hunter Brooke Chaffin.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Glenda Bowers, Floyd Bowers, Curtis and Paula Bowers, all of Maud; a sister, Luna Donnohue of Lake Jackson, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arlie Crownover of Salmon, Idaho; Clifton and Margaret Crownover of Mexia, Texas; Loreda Crownover of Guthrie; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mack Peercy officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Angelic Family Hospice, 421 N. Beard, Shawnee OK 74801.

Vivian Burris Moody
Vivian Burris Moody of Duncan, one of the last original Chickasaw Nation roll members, died Saturday, Sept. 27, at Chisholm Trail Assisted Living Center in Duncan. She was 98 years old.

Moody, a longtime Shawnee resident, was born Nov. 19, 1904, in Stonewall, Indian Territory. During college, she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

In Shawnee, she was President of the Junior Service League, Hawthorne Club, Monday Book Club, and chairman of the Junior Service League Follies. During World War II, she was on the original board of the Shawnee Teen Town.

She was also a member of the Wednesday Bridge Club and the Dames Bridge Club. Moody was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and received the Life Membership Award from the Women of the Church organization.

She was the wife of Lloyd T. Moody. The two owned Moody's Store on Main Street in Shawnee for many years. The Moodys were members of the Band Parents Association and assisted Boys Scouts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one son, L. George Moody.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don L. and Beverly Moody of Duncan; son, Bruce J. Moody and his fiancee, Roslyn Kalma, of Shawnee; daughter-in-law, Stella Moody of Washington D.C.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Emma and Jim Simmons of Bartlesville; eight grandchildren and spouses, David B. and Beth Moody, Gary M. and Kathleen Moody, Michele Moody, Monica and Mark Anderson, Terry Moody-Rahn and Robert, Elizabeth Moody-Cid and Pio, Jennifer Moody and Sarah Moody, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at United Presbyterian Church in Shawnee with the Rev. Dr. John Paul McGarey officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home.

Cora Elizabeth Grooms
Longtime Maud resident Cora Elizabeth Grooms died Friday, Sept. 26, at her home in Maud. She was 95 years old.

She was born Aug. 26, 1908, in Big Sands, Texas, to Clarence and Nancy Jane (Ford) Pittmon.

She married Steven Lonzo Grooms on Feb. 3, 1924, in Palestine, Texas. He died March 31, 1965.

Grooms moved to Maud from Oklahoma City 40 years ago. She was a homemaker, but also worked in many of the Maud cafes. She spent several years working at the Pottawatomie County District 3 County Barn. After her retirement, she worked at the Maud Tigers Den Cafe.

Grooms was a member of the First Baptist Church in Maud.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Jack, Joe and George Grooms; one daughter, Beatrice Smiley, and several grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Don and Joyce Stackhouse Brann, Lloyd and Glenda Bowers, Bob and Francis McCarty, Gary and Virginia McKlaskey, all of Maud; Paul and Jeanne Rowley of Ardmore; Louise Kelley of Oklahoma City; Bobby and Bobbie Woods of Newman, Ga.; one sister, Mary Louise Arrington of Gilmer, Texas; 46 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Monday morning at Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Maud with the Rev. Carl Whitfield, Bobby Woods and the Rev. Wayne Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Cummings Cemetery.

David Pecore
David Pecore, age 51, of Shawnee died Thursday at a Norman hospital.

David was born October 16, 1951 in Shawnee to Autwin and Iness Pecore.

He married Rebecca Scullawl on June 30, 1975. He is survived by his wife Rebecca of 28 years, 2 sons David Ryan Pecore and Jacob Eugene Pecore both of Shawnee, 3 daughters Linda Mae Yott and her husband David Allen Yott of Asher, "Deanna" Venus Hoffner and her husband R.J. Hoffner of Souderton, Pennsylvania and Sherrie Ann Pecore & Donald Cooper of Shawnee. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four sisters Delia Zientek, Mary Alice New, Catherine Oglesby and Peggy Pecore all of Shawnee. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Tony & Eddie Pecore and a daughter Lissia Pecore.

He attended Shawnee schools and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1969. He also attended Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech studying home electronics. He was a CHR

Maintenance Specialist for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation tribe. David was a member of the Citizen Potawtomi Nation. He was employed by the tribe for a number of years and worked with the Elders providing transportation. He also had worked at Dawson Lumber, Robinson Steel in Okla. City, and Mills Machine Shop. David was appointed CHR Maintenance Specialist in 1977 after a period of basic CHR training in health areas. He has held five American Welding School Certificates for welding training, and a certificate in Water-well Pump and Drain Fields, from the Office of Environmental Health. At the time of his death he was an independent farmer, rancher and welder.

David enjoyed hunting deer, quail and fishing for catfish. He was a good husband and father and loved all of his grandchildren. Prayer Services will be Sunday evening at 6:00 pm at the Chapel of Walker Funeral Service. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Monday at 12:00 noon at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Minnie R. Conn
Minnie R. Conn, 81, of Tecumseh died Saturday.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Little Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Sibyl Laverne Elliott
Sibyl Laverne Elliott, 79, of Midwest City died Wednesday in a Midwest City nursing home.

She was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Grandfield, Okla., the daughter of Roy Layton and May (Willey) Bradley.

She attended John C. Frémont High School in Los Angeles, Calif. Later, she graduated from Neff's Business College in Shawnee. She worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for several companies. She also worked for some time at The Shawnee News-Star.

She was married to Lewis A. Elliott. They later divorced.

Elliott's family was involved in the Oklahoma land run. She was a state champion bowler in the 1950s.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Wilda Mae Shepard.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilda Lynette Haider of Roselle, Ill.; two grandchildren, Bonnie Hill of Spring, Texas, and Anne Haider of Norman; two great-grandchildren; a niece, Patricia Morgan of Virginia; a nephew, Michael Titsworth of Maryland; a great-niece and two great-nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Arrangements are being handled by Resthaven Funeral Home.

Lillie Ellen Norman
Lillie Ellen Norman, 91, Shawnee, died Friday at a local nursing home.

She was born Sept. 18, 1911, in Shawnee to Daniel Moore and Flora Anna (Allison) Sealock.

She graduated from Shawnee High School and then lived and worked in Oklahoma City and Fort Smith, Ark. When she returned to Shawnee, she served as assistant to Dr. E.C. Cranston, DDS, for more than 30 years. After retiring, she lived with her son in the Los Angeles area and worked as a full-time in-home caregiver.

She married Albert G. Norman on Feb. 27, 1932. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, having attended the Thompson Heights Church of Christ since her return from California. She was traveler who also ferried automobiles from Oklahoma to California on occasion, using the original Route 66.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and her son, Donald Albert Norman, who died in 1991.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Virginia Wyatt Norman of Bozeman, Mont.; four grandchildren and spouses, Peri Norman of Camarillo, Calif., Penny and Broose Johnson of Windemere, Fla., Cara and Rob Greger of Bozeman, Mont., and Guy and Caroline Norman of Van Nuys, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Tim Flynn, Ray Newell and others officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Floydetta Mary Work
Former Pottawatomie County resident Floydetta "Flitter" Mary Work, 85, Norman, died Thursday in Norman.

Surviving are her son, John Keith Work and wife Marian of Denison, Texas; a daughter, Nancy Payne and husband Thomas of Tulsa; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Norman with the Rev. Joe Grizzle officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Wanette Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman.

Wesley Morgan Godbey
Wesley Morgan Godbey of Asher died Friday. He was 50.

Godbey was born in Bonham, Texas, on May 27, 1952, to Bill Morgan Godbey and Floy Bell Blake Godbey.

He worked as a construction superintendent and was of the Baptist faith. He also was an artist and writer.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Grant and Birtha Godbey and John and Rose Blake; his father, Billy Godbey; and a brother, Lesley Godbey.

Surviving are his mother, Floy Bell Godbey of Nocona, Texas; a son, Joshua Godbey of Norman; a daughter, Emily Godbey of Hazelhurst, Miss.; a sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Rusty Dick of Fort Worth, Texas; and a brother, Sam Godbey of Fort Worth, Texas.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Scott-Morris Chapel in Nocona, Texas, with the Rev. Scott Moore and the Rev. Luke Orley officiating. Burial will follow in Molsbee Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors in the home of Floy Godbey, 511-B Montague St., in Nocona, Texas, on Sunday evening.

Arrangements are under the direction of Scott-Morris Funeral Home, Nocona, Texas.

Vernon B. Coley
Vernon B. Coley, 80, Tecumseh, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Michael Andrew Cotner
Michael Andrew Cotner, 88, Konawa, died Saturday at an Ada hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Mohana Cotner, of the home; a daughter, Betty Belk of Brandon, Miss.; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one niece, one nephew and many other family members and friends.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Konawa City Cemetery with the Rev. Drew Isaacs officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home.

Melva B. Johnson
Shawnee resident Melva B. Johnson, 95, died Sept. 27 at a Shawnee hospital.

Johnson was born May 6, 1908, in Poyner Mo., to James A. Johnson and Meekee Mae (Strong).

He married Ella Cosette May 6, 1928, in Paden. He worked at Douglas Aircraft as a sheet metal supervisor. He later was a barber and owned OBU Barber Shop. He was also an insurance agent, wholesale grocery salesman and worked on the Shawnee Crisis Line as a volunteer. He was a member of the First Church of God in Shawnee.

Johnson was preceded in death by his wife; son, Paul Leslie Johnson; three sisters, Lula Knight, Zula Morgan, Vira Mitchell; two brothers, James and Ezra Johnson; and one infant sister.

Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis Gale Hilton of Shawnee; his son and daughter-in-law, Melvin Burl and Loretta Johnson of Shawnee, five grandchildren, Sherri Renee Johnson of Taraholt, Ind., Randy Wayne Hilton of Seminole, Donald Burl Johnson of Shawnee, Daryl Ray Johnson of Shawnee and Tonya Ann Bussell of Shawnee, his brother, Byrum Johnson of Fresno, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gaskill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kresten Norholm and the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park. Gaskill Funeral Chapel is in charge of all arrangements.

Keith Lee
Tecumseh resident Keith Lee, 51, died Sept. 26 in Shawnee.

Lee was born Aug. 25, 1952 ,in Gustine Calif., to Leonard and Dorothy (Higgins) Lee.

He was brought up in Livingston Calif., and lived in Merced, Calif., before moving to Tecumseh in 1992.

He married Debbie Cheatwood on July 24, 1974, in Modesto, Calif.

He worked as a mechanic for Merced Co. Irrigation District. He was a member of Lakeside Free Will Baptist Church, where he was an elder and a Sunday school teacher. He later attended First Assembly of God in Tecumseh. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Melvin Lee.

Survivors include his wife; one son and daughter-in-law, Anthony "Hank" and Alisha Lee of Noble; four brothers, Ed Lee of Fairbanks, Alaska, Cecil Lee of Koeta, Jim Lee of Merced, Calif., and David Lee of Madera, Calif.; one sister, Cathy Harris of Calif.; and four grandsons, Brodhe Lee of Tecumseh, Brett Lee of Noble, Matthew Lee of Noble and Christian Lee of Noble; and many other relatives.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at First Assembly of God in Tecumseh. The Rev. Chad Broderick will officiate. Burial will be at Black Cemetery. Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh is in charge of arrangements.
