Gary Warren VanAntwerp
Gary Warren VanAntwerp, 58, of Shawnee died Friday, Feb. 4, at an Oklahoma City hospital.

He was born Oct. 5, 1946, in Shawnee, the son of Warren C. VanAntwerp and Claudia (Glover) VanAntwerp. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1965 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University.

On Feb. 10, 1982, he was married to Beverly (Zweifel) in Shawnee. He was the manager of the Cinderella Hotel in Shawnee for many years and was active in Lions Club.

In 1994, he and Beverly moved to Rockport, Texas, where he managed the Best Western Inn by the Bay and the Inn at Fulton Harbor. While in Rockport, he was active in the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce, earning Rotarian of the Year 1996-97. He served as Rotary president 1998-99, was Chamber Member of the Year 1998-99, and Chamber president 1999-2000. He retired in 2003 and moved back to Shawnee.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Warren and Claudia VanAntwerp; an infant brother, Ronnie VanAntwerp, and sister, Barbara Goodman.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly VanAntwerp, of the home; three children, Angi VanAntwerp Hood and her husband, David, of Glenrose, Texas; Wendy Stockard of Oklahoma City; Betsy Stockard and her fiancé, Mike McGirt, of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Ian, Samantha and Maxwell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Donna VanAntwerp, Mike and April VanAntwerp, Jim and Kim VanAntwerp, all of Shawnee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen Munn, Cheryl Miller, Terri and Robert Robison, Jan and David Shults, all of Shawnee, and many other family members.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Funeral Chapel in Shawnee. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 215 W. Wallace, Shawnee OK 74801, or the National Arbor Foundation.

Leta Rue Freeman
Sasakwa resident Leta Rue Freeman, 77, died Friday, Feb. 4, at a local nursing home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Byars to Alva and Fronie (Hinkle) Gooch. She was raised in Byars, Rosedale, Tecumseh and Stratford. She attended school in Shawnee and graduated at Stratford; she played basketball in school for several years.

She attended St. John's School of Nursing in Tulsa and graduated in 1973.

She married L.D. Freeman Nov. 26, 1947, in Stratford and they made their home near Sasakwa. She was head nurse for Holdenville General Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1992. She also had worked for Wewoka Hospital for a few years. She also ranched.

Her husband and parents preceded her in death.

Survivors are two children, Dona Streetman of Poteau and Andy Freeman of Shawnee; brother, Olan Gooch of Sanger, Texas; sisters, Dean Rainbolt of Sun City, Ariz., and Jeanette Cleveland of Texas; grandchildren, Wes Streetman, Kale Streetman, Hadley Freeman and Kinsey Freeman.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa with the Rev. Frank Moppin officiating. Burial will follow at Lone Dove Cemetery north of Sasakwa under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.

Victor A. Frye
Victor A. Frye, 49, died Friday at his McLoud home.

Tribal rites were Saturday evening at the Murdock Family home. Burial will be this morning at the Frye Family Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Verlene Brannon
Verlene (Talton) Brannon, 62, of Shawnee died Thursday, Dec. 30, at an Oklahoma City hospital.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Union Missionary Baptist Church of Shawnee. Burial will follow at Earlsboro Cemetery. Gaskill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Rufus Staggs
Shawnee resident James Rufus Staggs, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 30, at his residence.

Further information is pending and will be released by Gaskill Funeral Home.

Wanda V. Chandler
Shawnee resident Wanda V. Chandler, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 1, at a Shawnee hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church. Additional information is pending and will be released by Gaskill Funeral Home.

Mark Allen Raper
Chandler resident Mark Allen Raper, 40, died Thursday, Dec. 30, at his home.

He was born July 29, 1964, in Kankakee, Ill., to Wayne and Karen (Bevins) Raper.

He graduated Momence High School in 1982 and moved with his family to a ranch near Chandler.

On March 11, 1989, he married Cheryl Rozell in Chandler.

He worked many years for Auto Recovery of Oklahoma City and was of the Baptist faith.

His grandparents precede him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Raper of the home; two sons, Joshua and Jacob Raper of the home; parents, Wayne and Karen Raper of Chandler; two brothers and a sister-in-law, David Raper of Chandler and Jeff and Amanda Raper of Shawnee; sister, Debbie Raper of Chandler; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wayne and Karen Rozell of Chandler, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Lorri Rozell of Chandler; and numerous family and friends from across the state.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Chandler with the Rev. Jeremie Beller officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler.

Memorial donations may be sent to Union Bank of Chandler for a children¹s college fund.

Jayne Meier
Jayne Meier, 82, died Friday, Dec. 31, in Shawnee.

She was born in Foraker July 15, 1912, the daughter of Jasper and Louise (Drew) Inda.

She attended St. Mary Catholic School in Guthrie and St. Benedict School in Shawnee.

On May 21, 1941, she married Charles Meier in Prague.

Meier worked 35 years as a caregiver in the medical field, was a volunteer for Hospice of Shawnee, Shawnee Regional Hospital and Prague Hospital Auxiliaries and the American Red Cross.

Preceeding her in death were her husband; two stepsons, Javon and Carl Meier; sister, Helen McCarthy; brother, Louis Inda; and two nephews.

Survivors include stepson, Ralph Meier of Woodward; sister, Josephine Sampson of Shawnee; several step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

A wake service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Prague. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague with the Rev. Adrian Vorderlandwehr, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will follow at Prague Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the National Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague or Hospice of Shawnee.

Esther Ruth Loftis
Wichita, Kan., resident Esther Ruth Loftis, 88, formerly of Shawnee, died Thursday, Jan. 6, in Wichita.

She was born May 14, 1916, in Kingfisher to Perry and Lena Copeland. She attended Big Four high school in Kingfisher, Okla.

She married Alton Loftis and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church in Shawnee

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers.

Surviviors include her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Phillip Smith of Wichita, Kan.; two grandchildren, Tammy Self of Dallas, Texas, and Forrest Smith of Wichita, Kan.; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. Milo L. Steffen officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Walker Funeral Service of Shawnee is directing arrangements.

Bill Peters
Shawnee resident Bill Peters, 74, died Friday, Jan. 7, at a local hospital.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday. Further announcements are pending with Walker Funeral Service of Shawnee.

James Rufus Staggs
Shawnee resident James Rufus Staggs, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 30, at his home.

He was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Townville, Anderson Co., S.C., to Nathan Monroe and Macie (Whitfield) Staggs.

He was a marine and served in World War II and Korea. Before retiring, he had a maintenance operation in Oklahoma City. He was a trim carpenter and a licensed heat and air tech. After retiring to Shawnee, he was a dealer at the Old Shawnee Town Flea Market.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward Bruce Staggs.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Billie (Ratliff) Staggs, of the home; daughter, Nikki (Staggs) Hicks and husband, James "Sonny" Hicks, and three granddaughters of Kennesaw, Ga.; his sister and brother-in-law, Willie Sue (Staggs) and Vic Hanson, and several nieces and nephews of Kokomo, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Sherry Hightower of Houston and Kim (Bell) and husband, Jeffery Thibodeau of Port Arthur, Texas, and five step grandchildren; and a cousin, Emma Selman of Williamston, S.C.

Cremation service was handled by Gaskill Funeral Chapel.

Frances O. Massey
Shawnee resident Frances O. Massey, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, at a local nursing home.

She was born Jan. 6, 1911, in Sparks to George Franklin and Mary Drucilla (Sorrels) Massey.

She attended elementary school at Fanshowes. When Massey was 2, the family moved to Arkansas and moved back to Oklahoma in 1918. In 1925, her family moved to Sparks, where she graduated from high school as valedictorian of her class in 1943. She attended and graduated from Southwestern Bible School (now Southwestern Assemblies of God University.) She received her associate of art degree from Southwestern Junior College, where she joined the staff at Southwestern. She was the manager of the book store at Southwestern until her 1976 retirement.

In late 1977, she and her sister, Margery, moved to Shawnee.

She attended First Assembly of God in Shawnee, where she served as organist and teacher of the Adult Ladies Sunday school class for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, Margery Massey and a niece, Lola Pickens.

Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Garland E. and Marcene Massey of Shawnee; two nieces, Honnah Myers and her husband, John, of Shawnee and Maxine Wiley of Tecumseh; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. James Walter officiating. Burial will follow at White Dove Cemetery, Sparks.

Walker Funeral Service of Shawnee is directing arrangements.

John Douglas Curtess
John Douglas "Doug" Curtess, 78, of Shawnee died Sunday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Lorene Estelle Fipps
Lorene Estelle Fipps of Prague died Tuesday, July 22, at the age of 84.

She is survived by her stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Vernita and Ray Mayfield of Paden; Maxine and Denny Harwell of Shawnee; Kay Drain of Ardmore; a special niece, Ruby Lee Williams of Arlington, Texas, and other relatives.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with the Rev. Paul Heard officiating. Burial will follow at Paden Cemetery.

Ruby Shannon Stevens
Ruby Shannon (Klish) Stevens, 89, of Oklahoma City died Friday, Feb. 11.

She was born March 6, 1915, in Rossville, Ga., to William H. and Laura L. Klish.

She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1933 and worked at Woolworth in Shawnee from 1935 to 1946 and at TG&Y from 1967 to 1977.

On Feb. 25, 1944, she married Mason Clifford Stevens in Shawnee.

She was a member of Crest Baptist Church in Midwest City, the PTA at Barnes Elementary, the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Genealogical Society.

Stevens was preceded in death by her husband and oldest daughter, Sharon Lueree Stevens Ale.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Gary Stevens of Oklahoma City, Sandra Stevens of Oklahoma City, Jimmy and Mary Stevens of Henrietta, Texas, and Mike Stevens of Newalla; grandchildren, Laura and husband Michael Englebrecht of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Minna Ale and fiancé John Lairet of Yukon, Christopher of Jewett, Texas, Eric of Henrietta, Texas, Sean of Newalla, Johnny of Newalla, Jason of Beaufort, S.C., and Cody Miller of McLoud; and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Crest Baptist Church in Midwest City. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery.

Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
