Ernie Nichols
Shawnee resident Ernie Nichols, 59, died Thursday, Dec. 30, in Shawnee.

He was born June 23, 1945, in Suffolk County, England, to Howard Earl and Mary Theresa (Williams) Nichols.

In 1946, he was brought to the United States on the Queen Mary at the age of 10 months.

On Dec. 1, 1997, he married Afton Rose in Miami, Okla.

He lived in Shawnee, Sacramento, Calif., for five years, then moved to Clinton, where he lived for 25 years. He lived in Vinita for eight years.

He was a 1964 graduate of Bethel High School. He worked as a personal care assistant.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nichols; his grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife, Afton Nichols of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Rocky and Alice Nichols of Shawnee; daughter, Rhonda Walker of Durant; granddaughter, Cheyenne Walker of Durant; grandson, Zack Knox of Shawnee; father, Howard Nichols of Shawnee; brother, Thomas H. Nichols of Kingston; and uncles and spouses, Bill and Linda Nichols of Shawnee, Rusty and Dorothy Nichols of Milwaukee, Ore., and Pat Williams of England.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Harmon officiating. Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh is in charge of arrangements.

Zella Ward
Shawnee resident Zella Ward, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 30, at a Shawnee hospital.

She was born July, 17, 1920, in Perkins to James A. Goforth and Mary M. (Garner) Goforth.

As a teen, she was a member of NYA in Ponca City.

On Dec. 24, 1939, she married Chester Ward in Cushing. The couple was married 65 years.

They moved to Shawnee in 1942 and reaffirmed their marriage vows in 1989 with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating.

Ward was a homemaker and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and Liberty Baptist Church.

Preceeding her in death were her parents, seven brothers and sisters, and a son, John Ward.

Survivors include her husband, Chester Ward of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mickey and Nelda Ward and Jerry and Vernell Ward, all of Shawnee; daughter, Chesteen Dawkins and Randy McElroy of Shawnee, a daughter-in-law, Diane Ward of Harrah; two brothers, Darrel and Bob Goforth; seven grandchildren, Angie Dawkins, Lori Dawkins, Shelly McInturff, Jeremy Ward, Regina Ward, James Ward and Larry Ward; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Resthaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Matthews, the Rev. Phil Thompson and the Rev. Larry Goins officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Alma Louise Watkins
Prague resident Alma Louise Watkins, 81, died Friday, Dec. 31, in Prague.

On Aug. 29, 1941, she married Wesley Watkins in Okemah. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Prague.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley Watkins; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and John Thomas of Prague, Barbara and Colin Crawford of Alexander, Ark., Kianna and Mike Kubicek of Shawnee and Regina and Greg Wagner of Prague; grandchildren and spouses, Monty and Lisa Stewart of Prague, Tamela Cleckler of Clanton, Ala., Cary and Sherry Crawford of Olympia, Wash., Jeremie and Kelly Kubicek of Edmond, Kimberly and Tim McCoy of Prague, Jessica Matthews and Jarrod of Prague and Teri Garrison and Steve Searcy of Arkansas; a brother, Bert Stockton of Hutchinson, Kan.; a sister, Pauline Palmer of San Diego, Calif.; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Prague with the Rev. Tim Emmons officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery under the drection of Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Prague.

John Clifford Copeland Sr., 77, of Tecumseh died Friday, Dec. 31.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Additional information will be announced by Cooper Funeral Home.

HoSun Mullahey
Shawnee resident HoSun Mullahey, 47, died Friday, Dec. 31, at her home.

She was born, Oct. 10, 1958, in Korea to Jong Mau and OkSun Choi.

She moved to the United States in 1977 and later became a U.S. citizen.

She was married to John Mullahey, who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death was Phil Maddux.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Jerod Niles of Shawnee; a son, Mark Maddux of Shawnee; grandson, Sterling Niles of Shawnee; mother, OkSun Choi of Korea; a sister, Onyea Watson of Newalla; and two brothers and two sisters, who live in Korea.

Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow 2 p.m. at Sun Rise Cemetery near Kellyville.

Arthur Daniel Byers Sr.
Shawnee resident Arthur Daniel Byers Sr., 81, died Friday, Dec. 31, at his home.

He was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Oklahoma City to George Wesley and May Pearl (Arnold) Byers.

He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. During World War II, he served in France, Germany, Austria, England, Newfoundland, Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alaska, Utah and Oklahoma City. Byers earned numerous medals for outstanding military service.

During his civilian career, he was service manager for JCPenney¹s Auto Center at Crossroads Mall and then for Harvey¹s Chevrolet.

He was a woodworking instructor for the National Youth Administration and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was married to Beatrice Ruth Dibler from 1942-1964 and Sharon Kay Foreman 1967-2004. They both preceded him in death.

Also preceeding him in death were his parents, sister, Helen, and brother, Leroy.

Survivors include daughters, Darlene and Sherry; sons, Arthur Jr., Richard, Thomas, Shannon and Shawn; grandchildren, Allison, Christina, Crimson, Erin, Jordan, Kelley, Serena, Christian, Danny, Jeffrey, Landon, Loren, Mathew, Mark, Richard, Samuel, Scott, Sebastian and Zachary; sisters, Bobby Jean, Marie and Christine; and brothers, Donny, Marion and Gerald.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Lawton.

Elmer Helms
Shawnee resident Elmer Helms, 57, died Friday, Dec. 31, at his home.

Further information is pending with Gaskill Funeral Home.

Clara Lee Rosson
Clara Lee Rosson, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 8, in Shawnee.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Juanita F. Allen
Shawnee resident Juanita F. Allen, 65, died Friday, Jan. 7, in Shawnee.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Memorial Park with Terry Newell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Phyllis Jean (Redding) Bryant
Seminole resident Phyllis Jean (Redding) Bryant, 59, died Friday, Jan. 7, at her home.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carl Whitefield officiating. Burial will follow at Wetumka Cemetery.

Itha Hope "Judy" (O'Neal) Morris
Itha Hope "Judy" (O'Neal) Morris, 79, of San Jacinto, Calif., died Monday, Jan. 3, in Hemet, Calif.

She was born May 30, 1925, in Tecumseh to Thomas O'Neal and Zelah (Shepard) O'Neal.

In 1950 she married Rex Morris. The couple raised their family in Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey and California. They settled in the San Jacinto/Hemet area in 1986.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hemet Valley Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004 and sister, Freida Yott.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen R. and Dennis Clemens of Moreno Valley, Calif.; two sons, Mark R. Morris of Oklahoma City and Jerold R. Morris of Moreno Valley; one brother, Milton "Bud" O'Neal of McLoud; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hemet Valley Christian Church with the Rev. Larry Stalley officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Miller-Jones Mortuary and Crematory of San Jacinto, Calif., is directing arrangements.

Hiram A. "Buddy" Sands
Longtime Prague area resident Hiram A. "Buddy" Sands, 66, died Friday, Jan. 7, in Shawnee.

He was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Fewell, Okla., the son of Elmer Levi and Marie Evelyn (Atteberry) Sands.

He married Joyce Jan Weaver Nov. 8, 1985. She preceded him in death Nov. 3, 2003. He served in the U.S. Army and worked in construction. He was a member of Highway Baptist Church and VFW Post No. 11194.

His parents also preceded him in death.

Survivors are his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Tracy Warkentien of Earlsboro; brothers and sisters-in-law, Doug and Wanda Sands of Shawnee, Junior and Karen Sands of Glenpool and Paul and Patty Sands of Dallas, Ga.; sisters and brother-in-law, Evelyn Martin of Paden, Erna and Frank Drummond of Dallas, Ga.; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Little Cemetery in Seminole County with the Rev. Cal Hunter officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Prague.

Robert B. Cole
Robert B. Cole, 89, died Friday, Jan. 7, at his Shawnee home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Oklahoma City, the son of Boyd and Floreen Cole. He attended school in Oklahoma City, graduating from Classen High School.

He drove a streetcar and later a bus for the city of Oklahoma City. He was an Oklahoma City firefighter for more than 25 years, where he held the positions of drill master, fire training officer and fire chief.

He was in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving in World War II as a medical supply officer in the 328th Battalion, 45th Infantry Division.

He was a member of the Firefighters Association, VFW and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laverna, a brother and a sister.

Survivors are his wife, Edith Cole, of the home; brother-in-law, Marvin McCabe; sisters-in-law, Ruth Burgin, Vera Moore and Vivian Dale, and many other relatives.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Tecumseh Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Bill Peters
Bill Peters, 74, died Friday, Jan. 7, at a local hospital.

He was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Shawnee to Ed and Gail Peters. He attended Shawnee High School and graduated in 1948.

He married Helen Kennedy Feb. 16, 1950, at the Shawnee Assembly of God Church. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean conflict.

He worked with his father and brothers in the plumbing business and later formed a partnership with his brothers. He also worked for Big C Drilling Co. and was a rural mail carrier in the McLoud area. He worked for Sparks Heating and Air until his retirement.

He was a member of the First Christian Church since 1963, where he served as deacon, as well as property chairman for six years. He also volunteered as the camping chairman for the National High School Finals Rodeo and the International Finals Youth Rodeo for 14 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Survivors are his wife, Helen Peters, of the home; son, Monty Peters, of the home; twin brother, Bob and his wife, JoAnn Peters, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, J.R. and Freda Peters, Shawnee; sister, Maurine Berry of Pauls Valley; sister and brother-in-law, Corine and Bill Chrz, Perry; special cousins, Bennie Carter (Eddie), Midwest City, and Freda and Dean Curry, Davenport, and numerous other relatives.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center conference center with the Rev. Milo Steffan and the Rev. Dr. James Sill officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Family will receive visitors 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Walker Funeral Service.
