WILLIAM A. "BILL" NIX, SR.
VINITA, Okla. - William A. "Bill" Nix, Sr., former Vinita resident, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2001 in San Antonio, Texas. He was 77-years-old. Bill, known by the nickname "Gruff" because of his deep voice, is a true Craig County native. He was born April 6, 1924 at Centralia, Okla. to James O. and Daisy L. (Armor) Nix. He moved with his family to Vinita at the age of 12. Bill graduated from Vinita High School, then left for the Pacific front where he served in the Air Force, stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea. At the end of the war, Bill returned to Vinita. Bill met and married Joan Ross on September 13, 1947. The new Nix family stayed in Vinita for some time, although Bill worked in Miami at night (while simultaneously working a day job and running a dairy farm). In order to support his growing young family, Bill took a job as a salesman for Swift and Co. in Tulsa. His rapid promotions were the result of hard work, perseverance and a native intelligence. He was promoted to plant manager and transferred to Muskogee, then to Oklahoma City, then back to Tulsa, each successive move representing increased responsibility and prestige. In 1962, Bill accepted the position of Beef Sales Manager with Roegelein Provision Company in San Antonio, Texas. Bill retired as General Manager with Capitol Meat Co. in San Antonio, Texas. He was an active member of the Northside Church of Christ.
He is survived by his, wife Joan, of the home; two daughters, Lynn Meyer of Denver, Colo., and Judy Osborne and husband, Don, of West Hills, Calif.; two sons, Joe Nix and wife, Jodel, of San Antonio, Texas, and Bill Nix, Jr. of Jay, Okla.; two sisters, Sabrina Moore of Tulsa, Okla., and Anna Marie Carlton of Calif.; one brother, Edgar Lee Nix of Tulsa, Okla.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services
were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at the Spavinaw Cemetery. Mr. Roy Osborn officiated. Services were under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.
TOMMIE JO NOEL
MIAMI, Okla. - Tommie Jo Noel, 58, of Miami died Friday, May 18, 2001 at Hillcrest Regional Medical Center in Tulsa after a long illness. Ms. Noel was born December 5, 1942 in Miami, Okla. to Joseph C. and Anna Kinney (Scraper) Noel. She has lived with her aunt and uncle, Betty and Dale Scuggins, in the Miami area most of her life. She worked as a seamstress at both Burlington and Glen Berrys Garment Co. For 11-1/2 years she was the church secretary for the Southeast Baptist Church in Commerce where she had been a member since 1980.
She is survived by three brothers, James Noel of Miami, Eddie Noel of Tulsa, Okla., and David Noel of Miami; three sisters, Melissa Ross of Tulsa, Okla., Hiawannah Cecil of Claremore, Okla., and Audrey Tanner of Pryor, Okla.; an aunt, Betty Scuggins of Miami, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents and two brothers, Ronald and Charles Jr., preceded Ms. Noel in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, in the Southwest Baptist Church in Commerce. Rev. Jerry Von Moss will officiate. Burial will be in the Butler Cemetery's south of Grove, under the direction of the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home Miami. Pallbearers will be Bryan Miller, Doug Dryer, James Harry, Kevin Noel, Travis Noel, James Noel, Eddie Noel and David Noel.
BILLIE JEAN NOFIRE
JAY, Okla. - Billie Jean Nofire, age 54, died Friday, October 5, 2001 at her home in Watermelon Hollow. The daughter of Ned and Minnie (Davis) Watermelon, she was born on March 31, 1947 in Jay. Billie married James Nofire. He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a member of the Pine Ridge Baptist Church and a full blood member of the Cherokee Nation. She lived all her life in the Jay area.
Survivors include: three children, Nedra Dry, Mikayla Nofire, and John Nofire, all in Jay; three sisters, Lorene Sharp, Pamala Coatney and Ella Cummings, all in Jay; two grandchildren; one niece, and three nephews.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2001 in the Piney Baptist Church. The interment will be in the Jumper Cemetery. Mrs. Nofire will be at her home in Watermelon Hollow on Monday at 4 p.m. The services are under the directions of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay.
ADA F. (PAT) NOLAN
BERNICE, Okla. - Ada F. (Pat) Nolan, of Bernice, died Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Rosewood Terrace in Vinita after a lengthy illness. She was 78. She was born at Helene, Okla., on January 18, 1923 to Jim and Sue Anthony. She married Carl Nolan on September 15, 1941 at Santa Cruz, Calif., and enjoyed being a homemaker for nearly 60 years. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Lamont, Okla. She moved to Bernice in 1989 from Calif., by way of Lamont.
Survivors are: her husband, Carl, of the home; a son, Kim, of Bernice; a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Chuck Christy, of San Bernardino, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Casey Colleen Christy.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 10, at Adcock Funeral Home Chapel in Fairland with Rev. Gene Jones officiating.
Pallbearers will be Bob Newcomb, Lloyd Collins, Bob Ross, Doyle Lynn, Oliver Vogle and Frank Floyd.
Burial will follow at Ballard Cemetery in Bernice. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until the service. Arrangements are through Adcock Funeral Home of Fairland.
C. A. "CAT" NOWLIN
KETCHUM, Okla. - C. A. "Cat" Nowlin, 58, of Ketchum, passed away Monday morning, July 16, 2001, at the Grove Nursing Center after an extended illness. C. A. was born on October 28, 1942 in Ketchum to C. A. and Janana (Ward) Nowlin.
He was employed at Mack's Bait Shop for over 20 years and loved to hunt, fish and visit with friends and children.
C. A. was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Survivors are: Clomer Nowlin of Eucha; brothers, Jim Nowlin of Ketchum, Harold Nowlin of Vinita, and Tom Nowlin of Ketchum, and sister, Shirley Skinner of Ketchum.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, at the Ketchum Cemetery with Rev. Skip McClain officiating. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Jim Mulanax, George Moore, Paul Baker, Ronnie Gregory, James Baker, and John Cupp.

LUCILLE E. NUNN
GROVE - Lucille E. Nunn, 71, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 28, 2001 after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the First Baptist Church, Fairland, with burial to follow at Swars Prairie Cemetery, Seneca, Mo., with Rev. Andy Krebs officiating. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the First Baptist Church in Fairland.
Lucille E. Nunn was born on December 12, 1929 in Bethpage, Mo., the daughter of Loyd E. and Alice Collings Smith. She married Brooks R. Nunn in Joplin, Mo., on August 21, 1954. Mrs. Nunn lived in the Fairland, area for a number of years before moving to Grove in 1998. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Fairland where she had been active.
Survivors are: her husband, Brooks, of Grove; one sun, Ron Nunn and his wife, Marti, of Miami; two brothers, Earl smith and his wife, Mary, of Grove, and Trueman Smith and his wife, Dorothy, of Baxter Springs, Kan.; one sister, Ruth Broady of Joplin, Mo.; several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, Grove.
MARY ANN OAKLEY
AFTON, Okla. - Mary Ann Oakley, rural Afton, died July 26, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa after a lengthy illness. She was 63. She was born at White Oak, Okla., on August 8, 1937 to Fred and Eva (Ironside) Rame. She was a member of the Cherokee Tribe. She was a homemaker and lived her adult life in Ottawa County. She was of the Baptist Faith. She loved to spoil her grandchildren and square dance. She had fought a valiant fight against illness, including being the recipient of a heart transplant in January 1988. She married Bud Oakley at Afton on November 17, 1955. He survives of the home.
Survivors are: two sons, Buddy Jr. and wife, Della Oakely, of Fairland, and Roger Dale Oakley of Afton; one daughter, Londa Owens of Afton; one sister, Nellie Polson of Vinita, and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie Ray Oakley.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at First Christian Church in Afton, with burial following at Sixkiller Cemetery. Officiating will be Minister Lee Williams. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Christopher, Jeremy, Kevin, Brandon Oakley, Joshua Atkinson, and David Zimmer.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the St. Francis Heart Transplant Center of Tulsa, c/o Adcock Funeral Home. Arrangements provided through Adcock Funeral Home of Afton.
GEORGIA L. OGDEN
GROVE - Georgia L. Ogden, 83, died Friday, July 28, 2001 at Grove General Hospital. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Newsong Church with Pastor Steve Dyer officiating.
Georgia Ogden was born in Carthage, Mo., on July 1, 1918 to John and Ida Kyle Ogden. She was named after the Battleship Georgia, Flagship of the Great White Fleet of World War I. Miss Odgen worked as a pastry chef during her life. She was a member of Newsong Church in Grove. Her hobbies were bird watching, sewing, Bible study and baseball.
Survivors are: one sister, Francis Scott, Jay, and two nieces, Melissa Kaser, Grove, and Diana Freeman, Leawood, Kan.
Services were entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, Grove.
TRACY OMSTEAD
GROVE - Tracy Omstead of Grove, born May 13, 1945 to Herman and Lois Omstead in Torrance, Calif., passed away June 19, 2001 at the Veteran's Medical Clinic, Fayetteville, Ark.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Omstead, of Grove; sons, Tracy Omstead Jr. of Grove, Herman Omstead of Grove, Justin Tallent of Stellville, Mo., James Hines of Afton, and Richard Ward of Afton; two sisters, Patty Altena of Apple Valley, Calif., and Linda Nelson of Hesperia, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; two nephews, and one niece.
Mr. Omstead served in Vietnam in 1967 and was active in Veteren's volunteer work. He was a member of the VFW Local Chapter 8380 and served as Adjutant and Service Officer. He was also a member of Local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, and served as a Volunteer Driver for the DAV Transportation program, driving veterans to and from their appointments at the VA Medical Clinic at Fayetteville, Ark.
There will be a memorial service in honor of Mr. Omstead July 7 at 2 p.m. at Word of Life Fellowship, 6819 W. Hwy. 59, Grove. Pastor Larry Ricks will be officiating.
STEVE WALTER ORNDER
LANGLEY, Okla. - Stever Walter Ornder, 53-year-old resident of Langley passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001 from a motorcycle accident. He was born Dec. 23, 1947 to Claude Earl and Rose (Dykes) Ornder in Vinita, Okla. He was a self-employed heat and air refrigeration serviceman. Steve married Kimberly Basford Sept. 4, 1997.
He is survived by is wife, Kimberly, of the home; a daughter, Misty (Ornder) Hamlin; two step-daughters, Tyla Basford of the home and Shannon Roberts and husband, Jack, of Afton, Okla.; two sons, Shane Ornder and wife, Jody, of Vinita, Okla., and Tony Ornder and wife, Pamela, of Granite, Okla.; two step-sons, Joshua and Daniel Hannon, both of Miami, Okla.; four sisters, Billie Lay and husband, Jim, of Canadian, Texas, Becky Clark and husband, Don, of Bernice, Okla.; Jerri Bake and husband, Judd, of Vinita, Okla., and Claudia Oliver and husband, Loui, of Independence, Kan.; and 12 grandchildren. His parents, a sister, Betty, and a brother, Jack, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 20, at 2 p.m., in the Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Justin Turner officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Burckhalter Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.
SHIRLEY RUTH ORR
JAY, Okla. - Shirley Ruth Orr, 73, passed away at her home Monday, June 25, 2001. Shirley was born December 4, 1927 to Otto Richard Owens and Vernal Irons in Tulsa, Okla. She attended school in Sand Springs, Okla.
Shirley was an OB Technician at Miami Baptist and Grove General Hospital for 23 years. She retired in 1998 at the age of 70. She enjoyed her family, farm and her horses.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Donna Karol Stephenson. Survivors are: two brothers, Keith Richard Owens and Phillip Irons Owens; two daughters, Linda Kay Tyner of Victoria, Texas, and Diana Katherine Baker of Glenpool, Okla.; two sons, Michael Keith Stephenson of Tulsa, Okla., and Jeffrey Lee Orr of Jay; four stepchildren; 15 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
Private services are under the direction of the Turner Funeral Chapels, Jay.
JAMES ROY "BUCK" OWEN
PRYOR, Okla. - James Roy "Buck" Owen, age 57, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Owen, the son of Adolphus Rance "A.R." and Ruby Grace (Thompson) Owen, was born in Pryor on January 24, 1944.
Funeral services for Mr. Owen were conducted Monday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. in the Assembly of God Church, Disney, with Mr. Jim Foster officiating. Interment followed in the Spavinaw Strang Cemetery with David Briggs, Robert Henson, Roy Collins, Danny Castoe, Johnnie Willyard and Tony Grubbs serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Joe Webb and his friends at NGC Industries. Funeral service arrangements were under the care of Garner's Jim Green Funeral Home, Pryor.
"Buck," a name that was given to him by his fellow employees, was a lifelong resident of Pryor and Disney. He was a member of the Pryor High School Graduation Class of 1962. For the past 34 years he was an employee of NGC Industries, Pryor, and was a member of UPIU, Local 1141. On August 28, 1978 he married the former Diana Due in Miami. Together they owned and operated PJ's Corner Grill in Disney for the past 22 years. Buck was a sportsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycling, boxing as a young man, and watching the Atlanta Braves and the University of Oklahoma. He held the record in "long jump" record in Track and Field competition at Pryor High School for over 30 years. He, along with another man, was instrumental in re-introducing girls softball in the Ketchum schools by contributing to building the softball field. Buck will long be remembered as a devoted husband, dedicated father, grandfather and a true loyal friend.
Mr. Owen is survived by his wife, Diana, of the home; his children, Kamicha Owen, Disney, Randy and Bobbie Owen, Braidwood, Ill., Shelly and Clinton Gray, Coweta, Troy and Shelby Owen, Neeses, S.C., Kevin and Kristi Morrow, Grove, Lawanna and Rodney Schaller, and Salina and Russell Morrow, Langley; mother Ruby Owen, Pryor; a buddy, Dakota; Pa's Baby Girl, Madison Gray; 15 grandchildren, one great great grandchild; sisters, Wilma King, Tulsa, June Martin, Junction City, Kan., Louise Stipes, Owasso, Betty Abbott, Vinita, Sharrie McDougal, Broken Arrow, Carol Butler, Tulsa and Vicky Denny, Pryor; mother-in-law Fern Davis, Vinita; brothers and sisters-in-law Marilyn Mouse, Langley, Vernie Due, Langley, Connie Monahan, Pryor, Anthony Due, Spavinaw and Don Johnson, Ponca City; very special family friend Nora Hoyt, Langley; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a lifetime of many close personal friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, "A.R," and a brother, Albert Owen.
