PATRICK K. RUTLEDGE
FAIRLAND, Okla. -Patrick K. Rutledge, age 17, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., November 28, 2001 after a lengthy illness. He was born January 5, 1984 at Naples, Italy, to Jim and Peggy Rutledge. He moved with his parents to Tampa in 1989, coming from Nebraska. He was a member of a local Baptist church.
He is survived by his parents, Jim and Peggy Rutledge, of the home; a brother and his wife, Michael and Dalana Rutledge, of Miami; paternal grandparents, Harry and Ernestine Rutledge Harris, of Fairland, and one nephew, Devon Michael Rutledge, Miami.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 3, at Adcock Funeral Home Chapel in Fairland with Rev. Jo Ann officiating. Pallbearers were Melvin Prater, Cecil Tinin, John Weigl, John Horn, Mike Blevins, and Glenn Dowell. Burial followed at Fairland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Children's Hospital at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., in care of the funeral home. Arrangements provided by Adcock Funeral Home in Fairland.
HAZEL MARIE SAGER
GROVE - Hazel Marie Sager, 85, died Friday, April 20, 2001 at her home in Grove. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Hamill officiating. Burial will be in Floral Haven Cemetery, Broken Arrow, Okla., at 2:00 p.m.
Hazel Sager was born on April 17, 1916. She married John Sager in 1938 in Sapulpa, Okla. Mrs. Sager worked as a clerk with Consolidated Forwarding Company, Tulsa, Okla., for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star Chapter #209, First United Methodist Church, Grove, United Methodist Women, Friday Book Club, Cherry Reds, Penucle Club and Bunco Club. She was a Past Worthy Matron of The Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by three nieces, Sue Henderson and Wanda Kay McGough, both of Grove, and Helen Maxine Hart of Uniontown, Kan.; two nephews, Ross Sager of Grove, and Doovan McGrew of Phoenix; six great nephews; two great nieces and many other great, great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and four brothers. Services are entrusted to Ellis Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove, 918-786-5172.
BENNIE RAY "RED" SANDERS
VINITA, Okla. - Funeral services
for Bennie Ray "Red" Sanders, 59 of Vinita, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2001 at the Craig County Baptist Church. Rev. Claude Strong will officiate and burial will follow in the Timpson Chapel Cemetery near White Oak. Services are under the direction of the Key Funeral Home in Pryor. Mr. Sanders will lie in state at the Luginbuel Funeral Home.
Mr. Sanders was born on March 9, 1942 in Vinita. He died on April 30 at his home. The son of Howard Calvin and Ruby Lee (Helton) Sanders, Red grew up and attended school in White Oak and graduated from White Oak High School in 1961. He and Wanda June Brown, wife of 33 years, were married in Miami, Okla. Red had worked for the Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Auction and Carroll Farms for many years and many other Livestock Auctions in the area. He has also worked for CB Craft, driving a cattle truck, WP Buxton in Sand Springs, Time DC hauling freight where he worked for three years, Johnson and Johnson Trucking, Elliott Truck Lines and owned and operated his own coal tractor and trailer for many years. Red, or Honey as he was called by his grandchildren, was a loving and kindhearted person who never met a stranger. Red was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He was a member of the Craig County Baptist Church in Vinita where he was baptized on March 18. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, and an honorary member of the Vinita and Claremore FFA.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda June Sanders, of the home; two sons, Timothy Paul "Tim" Jones and wife, Linda, of Inola, and Kenneth Jay "Jake" Jones and wife, Debbie, of Beggs, Okla.; one brother, Jimmy Howard and wife, Janet, of Toddleson, Ariz.; one sister, Mary Lee Snodderly and husband, John, of Vinita; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Henderson and husband, John Patrick, of Vinita, Tod Jones of Vinita, Cheyenne Jones of Inola, Jason Weston and wife, Kristen, of Tulsa, Taylor Weston of Claremore, Justin Jones of Beggs, Jered Jones of Beggs, and J.T. Jones of Beggs; three great grandchildren, Cassidy Henderson, Callie Henderson and Micah Weston, all of Vinita; eight nephews; six nieces; mother-in-law Jewell Brown of Vinita; father-in-law Everett Brown of Vinita; sisters-in-law Bonnie Inman and husband, Ray, of Ketchum, Pattie McMahon and husband, John, of Vinita, and Sue Norris and husband, Steve, of Highland, Texas; brother-in-law, Ed Brown and wife, Lois, of Jay, and Jim Brown of Vinita; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and special uncles Ben and Hugh Sanders. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel in Vinita.
ERMAN JASPER SARTEN
TWIN OAKS, Okla. - Erman Jasper Sarten, 82, of Twin Oaks, Okla., passed away Saturday, December 22, 2001 at his home.
Erman was born on March 25, 1919 in Neosho, Mo., the son of Benjamin Harrison Sarten and Sara Josephine Nichols Sarten. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Glades Winnie Louise Norris Sarten. He was a retired farmer and had retired from Simmons Industries. He was a member of the Mt. View Church. He loved music, playing the fiddle and guitar. He enjoyed visiting with people, always having something funny to say and never saw a stranger.
Survivors include: six children, Leonard James Sarten of Siloam Springs, Ark., Thomas Edward Sarten of Westville, Okla., Wanda Faye Squire of Kansas, Okla., Margy Mae Sarten of Siloam Springs, Ark., Cecil Ray Sarten of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Albert Leroy Sarten of Twin Oaks, Okla.; five sisters, Alice Vearneal Wilson of Holly, Colo., Pauline Cox of Marysville, Calif., Helen Virginia Swatsenberg of Tulsa, Okla., Silvia Nadine Harrison of West Siloam Springs, Okla., and Myrtle Marie Van Fleet of Gentry, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, along with a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Robert Lee Sarten, three brothers, George Orval Sarten, Harley Oval Sarten, and Edmond Leonard Sarten, and one sister, Jewel Irene Richardson.
Services were held at the Backstrom-Pyeatte Chapel on Thursday, December 27, at 10 a.m. Rev. Skip Hanvey and Rev. Bill Jackson officiated the services with burial at the Johnson Cemetery under the direction of the Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home.
ERNEST LEROY SCHLAGER
WHITE OAK, Okla. - Ernest LeRoy Schlager, 71-year-old White Oak resident, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at his home following a sudden illness.
Ernest was born December 22, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wis., to George and Emma (Weber) Schlager. Ernest served in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1952. He moved to this area in 1955 from Colorado. He was retired from the State Highway Department and Eastern State Hospital.
Survivors are: one son, Richard Schlager and wife, Tina, of White Oak; one daughter, Diana L. Purdom of Chelsea, Okla.; four sisters, Ruth Simpson and husband, Calvin, of Vinita, Annette Lyons and husband, Ken, of Brighton, Colo., Loretta Heroux of Greeley, Colo., and Rebecca Lowe of Greeley, Colo.; one brother, Robert Schlager of Richland, Wash.; three grandchildren, Christina White, Richard L. Schlager, and Angela Bailey, and seven great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Winganon Cemetery. Rev. Robert Sanders will officiate.
Viewing hours will be until 8 p.m. Monday, July 30.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the Burckhalter Funeral Home, Vinita, Okla.
Services are entrusted to Burckhalter Funeral Home.
ADA PEARL SCOTT
LANGLEY, Okla. - Ada Pearl Scott, 74, met her Lord and Saviour on June 26, 2001. She was born to Carl Sherwood Wells and Essie Bell Tarr in June 30, 1926 in Goldtry, Okla. She graduated from Jet High School and began working for Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator. In 1948, Ada and James Russell Scott were united in marriage in Lexington, Ky. Russell was recalled to the service and, after his return, Ada and Russell moved to Tulsa, Okla. She began work at St. Francis Hospital as a switchboard operator for a short time, then decided to be a full time homemaker. In 1985, Ada and Russell moved to the lake to enjoy their retirement. Ada was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved being with her family and she was a faithful member of the South Grand Lake Christian Church in Langley. She was very instrumental in planning and working to help build the new church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Murlin Wells.
She is survived by her loving husband, Russell, of the home, three sons; James Russell Scott Jr. of Tulsa, Darrell Wayne Scott of Tulsa, and Carl Robert Scott of Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter, Janet Sue Reese of Sand Springs, Okla.; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews; three sisters, Laveta Porter of Middleburg, Fla., Vivian Watson of Spavinaw, and Doris Jones of Enid; two brothers, Virgil Wells of Springdale, Ark., and Marvin Wells of Jet, and a host of friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. June 30 at the South Grand Lake Christian Church, Langley. Lunch will be served at the church following the service. Committal service will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa at 3 p.m. Services will be under the direction of The Turner Funeral Chapel, Langley.
GALEN S. 'SCOTTIE' SCOTT
GROVE - Galen S. "Scottie" Scott, age 78, of Grove (formerly of Kansas City, Mo.), passed away December 31, 2001 at home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2002 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Visitation will precede services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the chapel.
Galen was born October 23, 1923 in Crossroads, Ark. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Galen worked at Armco Steel for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was united in marriage to Avalene L. Sears on July 28, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Avalene Scott, daughter, Phyllis Wilson, son, Barry Scott, and brother, Warren Scott.
Survivors include: two sisters, Blanche Sears, Bakersfield, Calif., and Buena Faulkenberry, Longview, Texas; brother, Lester Scott, Lee's Summit, Mo; four grandchildren, Wendy Scott, Kansas City, Mo., Scott Wilson, Vance Wilson and Seth Wilson, all of Raytown, Mo.; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many good friends and a large extended family.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Scottie's special friends of Grove who helped him during his time of need. Arrangements under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
NEWTON JOHN 'SONNY' SELLARS
BERNICE, Okla. - Newton John "Sonny" Sellars, a 77-year-old resident of Bernice, Okla., died early Thursday morning, September 27, 2001 at Freeman Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.
Funeral services for Mr. Sellars will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October 1, at the Benjamin Funeral Chapel with Reverend Jack Darnell officiating. Interment will be in Ball Cemetery under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service of Nowata. Military graveside rites will be presented by the District 5 Rifle Squad.
Mr. Sellars began this life March 25, 1924 at Delaware, Okla., the son of John and Josie Whitlock Sellars. "Newt," as he was known by his friends, or "Sonny" by his family, grew up at Delaware and was a graduate of Delaware High School. After high school he went to work for the Civil Service in Alaska. It was at Anchorage that he married Dorothy Paisley on August 7, 1945. While in Alaska, Newt was called to duty by the U.S. Army. Upon completing his commitment to his country, the Sellars moved back to Delaware. Both Sonny and Dorothy went to work for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville. He was a lab technician at the Research Center for 38 years, before retiring in 1985. The couple moved to Bartlesville in 1953, and to Bernice in 1987, and had operated the Golden Ladle Restaurant in Delaware. Mr. Sellars was a member of the Delaware First Baptist Church and a member of the Bernice Civil Defense.
Survivors are: his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Sellars, of the home; one daughter, Joyce Pierce and her husband, Kellis, of Nowata, Okla.; one brother, Jim Sellars of Delaware; four sisters, Wilba Thomason of Taft, Calif., Bertha Ogden and Dutch Briggs of Nowata, and Mary Nash of Hastings, Minn.; three grandchildren, Pam Pearsall and her husband, Donnie, of Bartlesville, Chris Tole and his wife, Starla, of Collinsville, Okla., and Jason Pierce and his wife, Amanda, of Nowata; seven great grandchildren, Zach, Brittany, Josh and Caleb Pearsall of Bartlesville, and Garrett, Brycen and Madison Tole of Collinsville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Hubert Sellars, and by one sister, Jewel Blankenship.
OLEN VERNON SHARP
JAY, Okla. - Olen Vernon Sharp, 76, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001 at Grove General Hospital. Mr. Sharp was born on Aug. 13, 1925 to Ed and Deali (Holden) Sharp. He lived all his life in the Jay area. He ran O'Leary Laundromat in Jay until 1990. For the past few years Mr. Sharp cared for his sister, Ina Mae Riggs. He had been attending the Jay Family Worship Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Deali May Sharp, of Vinita; a brother, Oda Lee Sharp, of Jay, and two sisters, Monnie Loftis and Ina May Riggs, both of Jay. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary, his infant son, Johnny Sharp, and his sister, Lucille Lowrey.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Mt. Hermon Cemetery with Pastor Mark Berry officiating. Visitation was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Worley Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay. Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay.
ROSS SHARP
ANDERSON, Mo. - Mr. Ross Sharp, 79, died Sunday, November 18, 2001 at 12:50 a.m. at Freeman-Neosho Hospital in Neosho, Mo., after an illness. Mr. Ross Sharp was born on December 18, 1921 in Jay, Okla., to the late William and Keller (Youngduck) Sharp. He had lived in Anderson for 43 years, coming from Jay He was a member of the Anderson First Baptist Church in Anderson.
Survivors include: four sons, Steve Sharp, Woodward, Okla., William Sharp, Kenwood, Okla., Junior Lee Sharp, Grove, and Larry Joe Sharp, Weatherford, Okla.; four daughters Nancy Sharp, Marshall, Texas, Lou Goff, Leedey, Okla., Diane Sharp, South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Wanda Sharp, Anderson; 33 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Sharp; one son, John Lee Sharp, Jay; and two daughters, Ollie Faye Kingfisher, Southwest City, Mo., and Betty Sharp, Anderson.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, November 21, at 1 p.m. at the Jumper Cemetery in Jay. Visitation for Mr. Ross Sharp will be held on Tuesday, November 20, at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo., from 12 until 8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
JANICE "JAN" SHEPHERD
GROVE - Janice "Jan" Shepherd, 81 years old, of Grove passed away December 21, 2001 in the Grove General Hospital, after a long battle with dementia and congestive heart failure. She attended schools in Byars, Wynnewood, and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. After marrying Jim Shepherd, they lived in Oklahoma City, then in 1954 moved to Stillwater, where they co-owned Remy-Shepherd Home Furnishings and became members of the First United Methodist Church. In 1976, Remy's interest was purchased and the store was converted into an Ethan Allen store, Shepherd's Carriage House, which operated until 1986. Jim died in 1991 and in January 1995, Janice moved to Green Country Retirement Center in Bartlesville, Ok. In 1998, Jan moved to Concordia retirement Village, Bella Vista, Ark., where she lived until July 1, 2000, when she moved to Kennedy's Home Place in Grove. In October 2001, Jan entered the Grove Nursing Center. Janice enjoyed being a homemaker, church activities, water aerobics, little theater, travel, music, arts/crafts, and attending her children's and grandchildren's recitals, ballgames, sports events, and other activities. Janice was preceded by her parents Frank H. and Meddie Mae (Barr) Garner, husband. James N. Shepherd, and five siblings, Arlene Robinson, Marcelle Burk, Val Garner, Frank Julian Garner and Rex Garner.
Surviving are three daughters, Darla Baker and husband, Miles, of Grove, Kathy Holland and husband, Jim, of Keystone Lake, and Jamie Moore of Tyler, Tex; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; one brother, Stanford Garner of Altus, Okla.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, at the First United Methodist Church. The interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Stillwater, Okla. The services are under the direction of the Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater.
THOMAS SHELTON SHULL
GROVE, Okla.-Thomas Shelton Shull of Grove, Oklahoma died Friday evening, December 21, 2001 at his home, after a short illness. He was 62.
Mr. Shull was born August 15, 1939 in Dallas, Texas to R.J. and Ester (Williams) Shull. He had moved to Grove 11 years ago from Denver, Colorado where he was a fireman for 20 years with the Cherry Hills Fire Department in Cherry Hills, Colorado. He was a Police Detective with the Grove Police Department for the past 10 years.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Grove the Fraternal Order of Police and served in the U.S. Navy and the Air Force Reserves during peacetime.
He married Karen Susuras on October 19, 1999 in Grove, she survives of the home.
Other survivors include one son, Scott Douglas Miller, II of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, five daughters, Denise Jamison of Grand Junction, Co., Tonetta Lynn Carns of Hugo, Co., Tracie Lee Pfost of Hugo, Colo., Michele Ann Miller of Fayetteville, Ark., Jennifer Lynn Miller of Grove, Ok. His mother and step father, Toni and George Stewart of Grove and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grove Civic Center in Grove, Oklahoma. Rev. David Talle' and Chuck Wells will officiate. Pallbearers will be Mark Wall, David McCracken, Mark Morris, Scott Miller, Dan Hinman and Mike Huggins. Honorary Pallbearer will be Eric VanDyke. The Grove Police Department will conduct the F.O.P. Rites. Burial will be in Buzzard Cemetery, west of Grove, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, December 26, 2001 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Grove, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of the Paul Thomas Home of Miami.
