VIRGIL H. ELDER
BERNICE, Okla. - Virgil H. Elder, 75-year-old Bernice resident, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at the Grove Nursing Center in Grove following an extended illness.
Virgil was born March 13, 1927 at Lenapah, Okla., to Charles and Anna Bernice Elder. He attended Lenapah and South Coffeyville Schools. Virgil served in the United States Army during the end of World War II, and served during the Korean Conflict, retiring with the rank of Major. He was also a retired General Motors mechanic.
He was a member of the V.F.W. in Bernice and the American Legion in Coffeyville. He was of the Catholic faith and had attended the Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
Virgil was united in marriage to Anna Mae Archer in 1976. She preceded him in death in August of 2001.
His parents, two sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death.
Surviving family members include: three daughters, Marty of Texas, and Patty and Sharon, both of Kansas; two sons, Howard L. Elder and Terry Elder, both of Oklahoma; numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 8, at the Ballard Cemetery in Bernice. Father W. Gregg Elliot of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miami officiated.
Graveside Military Rites were performed by the Grove Veterans Ritual Team.
Services were under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.

GRACE L. ELLISON
VINITA, Okla. - Grace L. Ellison, age 84, of Vinita, Okla., passed away Friday, May 10, 2002 at her apartment at Heartsworth House following a sudden illness.
Grace was born February 3, 1918 in Rome, Mo., to Roland Joseph and Dora Anna (Jennings) Mendal. She attended school there. She was united in marriage to Vernie Ellison on May 20, 1938. They moved to Oklahoma in 1943 to live on Dr. Gordon's place in Claremore. They farmed there for 15 years close to the McSpadden place. They moved to Vinita in 1957 because the Oologah Dam came through their farm land. They bought the Ruth Ross Farm and Dairy in Vinita and, in approximately 1978, moved to their home on Brewer Street.
Grace worked for Vinita Flag and Apron for 24 years. She was active in the Senior Citizens for many years and attended the Community of Christ Church.
Survivors include: two daughters, Anita McGraw and husband, Dean, of Tulsa, Okla., and Louanne Walker and husband, Arnie, of Independence, Mo.; one son, Jerry Mack Ellison and wife, Martha, of Tulsa; one brother, Jerry Mendel of California; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vernie, one sister, and two brothers.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Burckhalter Memorial Chapel with Mr. C.H. McKee officiating, assisted by Lucille Ervin. Interment was in the Oowala Cemetery in Rogers County.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community of Christ Church in Vinita.
Services were under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home.

DONALD RAY ELROD
VINITA, Okla. - Funeral services for Donald Ray Elrod, 61, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002 in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Vinita, Okla., with Dr. Larry Wallace officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with graveside military rites performed by the Grove Veterans Ritual Team.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Burckhalter Funeral Home in Vinita.
Mr. Elrod was born June 13, 1941 in Denison, Texas, to Paul and Christine Elrod, and died Thursday, July 11, after suffering a heart attack while traveling from Oklahoma City to Lebanon, Mo.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963, leaving the Marines with the rank of Corporal (E4), and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In 1971 he began working for UPS in Big Cabin, Okla., in the package car division, working his way to feeder driver where he remained for 30 years.
He had many friends he talked to on the road from Oklahoma City to Lebanon and received many awards from UPS, including awards for safe driving and loyal service and was a member of the Circle of Honor. His outgoing, friendly and cheerful personality made a mark on many people, and he will be missed by family and friends alike.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; two sons, Mark Ray Elrod and Matthew Donald Elrod and his wife, Christina Lynn; three grandchildren, Jamison Patrick Elrod, Brandon Lee Elrod and Camrie Dawn Elrod, all of Chelsea; and three siblings, Bobby Dean Adams and Jerry Paul Elrod, both of Borger, Texas, Danna Rowe of Oregon, and Terry Dan Elrod of Wichita Falls, Texas.

JANICE LOUISE ELROD
CHELSEA, Okla. - Janice Louise Elrod, 57 year old Chelsea resident, passed away Friday November 29, 2002 at her home.
Janice was born November 29, 1945, in Vinita, Okla. to Ausbin and Ruth (Cook) Green. She attended Vinita Schools and graduated with the class of 1963. She attended nursing school and worked as a Home Health Care Nurse.
Janice was the widow of Donald Ray Elrod, who passed away July 11, 2002. Her father, a baby and one brother "Poody" Green also preceded her in death.
Surviving family members include: her mother, Ruth Jenkins, of Vinita; two sons, Mark Ray Elrod of Chelsea and Matthew Donald Elrod and wife, Christina, also of Chelsea; two sisters, Leona James and husband, Jesse, of Tulsa, Okla. and Lavona Ashford and husband, Melvin, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one brother, Gene Green and wife, Fern, of Vinita; three grandchildren, Jamison Patrick Elrod, Brandon Lee Elrod and Camrie Dawn Elrod.
A visitation was held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Burkhalter Funeral Home.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, December 2, at the United Pentecostal Church in Chelsea. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Vinita.
Services were under the direction of Burkhalter Funeral Home

KIM L. EMBREY
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Kim L. Embrey, age 43, St. Joseph, Mo., died Friday, January 4, 2002 at her home.
Kim Embrey was a registered nurse working for Heartland Regional Medical Center in post op for the past 5 1/2 years. She was a former employee of Sherwood Medical.
Born in St. Joseph on December 24, 1958, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. She was a graduate of Benton High School and earned her nursing degree from Missouri Western State College.
She was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include: her son, Eric C. Crockett, of St. Joseph; her father, Marland E. Embrey, of Faucett, Mo.; her mother, Dorrene F. (Waller) Embrey, of Grove; two sisters, Kelli Ash of Kansas City, Kan., and Marla Embrey of St. Joseph; grandmother, Ruth Voss of St. Joseph; one grandson, Bryntin Crockett; two nieces and two nephews.
Services are set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Meierhoffer Chapel. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service. The family suggests memorial gifts to American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research.

FLOYD WAYNE ENGLE
BLUEJACKET, Okla. - Floyd Wayne Engle, rural Bluejacket, Okla., departed this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2002. Born at Kennett, Mo., on November 21, 1921, he married Mary Ethel Adams at Urbana, Kan., on July 25, 1943. As an active member of the First Christian Church, Vinita, Okla., he served many years as an elder, several terms as chairman of the board, and was president of the Christian Men's Fellowship for multiple terms. In addition, he served as lay minister, and taught Sunday School classes for over 40 years.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years; one son, Wayne Engle Jr., and wife, Dollretta, of rural Bluejacket; two daughters, Mary Thornton of Dewey, Okla., formerly of Grove, and Florence Osborn and husband, Leon, of rural Bluejacket; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, and a brother.
Services will be Saturday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Vinita. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Luginbuel Funeral Home in Vinita.

VIRGIL EUGENE EMBRY
FORT SCOTT, Kan. - Virgil Eugene Embry, age 80, resident of Fort Scott, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. He was born October 20, 1921 in Bourbon County, Kan., the son of Morton Embry and Ida Maxwell Embry. He graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1940 and attended one year at Fort Scott Community College. Virgil served with the United States Army during WWII. He married Lavon Fowler on July 5, 1941 at Girard, Kan. The couple lived in Kansas City, Mo., where he retired from Southwestern Bell as a line supervisor. Following retirement they moved to Grove and returned to Fort Scott in the early 1990's. He was a member of the Devon Masonic Lodge #92. His hobbies included square dancing with the Iza Stompers Dance Club and bowling.
Survivors include: his wife, Lavon, of the home; two daughters, Sharon House and husband, Bill, of Wellsville, Kan., and Karen Higginbotham and husband, Denny, of Bucyrus, Kan.; sister, Maxine Kurtz of Wichita Kan.; four grandchildren, Richard Young, Brian Young, Greg Higginbotham, and Scott Higginbotham; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Livian Embry.
William James Schafer, Mercy Pastoral Care, conducted funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Masonic services by the Devon Masonic Lodge. Military honors were conducted by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701.

ROBERT PAUL EMERSON
BIG CABIN, Okla. - Robert Paul Emerson, lifetime Big Cabin resident, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Rosewood Terrace Nursing Center in Vinita. He was 96-years-old.
Robert was born October 16, 1905 in Big Cabin, Indian Territory, to William Franklin Emerson and Margaret Francis (Lauderdale) Emerson. He was in the first class to graduate from Big Cabin High School in 1925. Shortly after graduation he went to work at Big Cabin Lumber Company and later owned and operated the Lumber Company until retiring in 1972.
Robert was one of the original board members of Craig General Hospital, a member of the Masonic lodge number 99 in Adair, and served as a deacon for many years at the Big Cabin First Baptist Church.
Robert was united in marriage to Madge Wyatt on July 16, 1939 at Pineville, Mo.
Survivors include: his wife, Madge, of the home; two sons, Bobby Lee Emerson of Big Cabin, and Billy Emerson and wife, Marsha, of Vinita; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Margaret Emerson, Ruby Sexton, and Hallie Foster, and two brothers, Dempsey and Luther Emerson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, in the sanctuary of the Big Cabin Baptist Church. Rev. Thom Duncan will officiate. Interment will be in the Big Cabin Cemetery.
The Deacons of the Big Cabin Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Cabin Baptist Church Building Fund.
Services are under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home.

MARY L. EPPERSON
VINITA, Okla. - Mary L. Epperson, 88-year-old lifetime area resident, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the Rosewood Terrace Nursing Center following an extended illness.
Mary was born October 21, 1913 at Welch, Okla., to Alvin and Lula C. (Huff) Collins. She was a homemaker.
Mary was united in marriage to Clarence C. Epperson on September 10, 1929 at Vinita, Okla. The couple lived at Timber Hill for many years before moving to Pensacola in 1968. Clarence preceded her in death on December 4, 2001.
Her parents and several brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.
Surviving family members include: two daughters, Alma Minson and husband, Don, of Pensacola, Okla., and Norma Manley and husband, Darrel, of South Coffeyville, Okla.; four sons, Clarence C. Epperson and wife, Geraldine, of Disney, Okla., Clyde E. Epperson and wife, Ruth, of Augusta, Main, Barry D. Epperson and wife, Linda, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Gary D. Epperson and wife, Linda, of Bentonville, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, at the Burckhalter Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 24, at the Burckhalter Memorial Chapel. Rev. Henry "Skip" McClain will officiate. Interment will be in the Bluejacket Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Harry Epperson, Bruce Epperson, Darren Manley, Kevin Manley, Mike Minson and Brian Epperson. Honorary pallbearers will be Kerry Epperson, Gerald Epperson, Bradley Epperson and Matt Manley.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
Services are under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home.
