ETTA J. JAY
FAIRLAND, Okla. - Etta J. Jay, resident of Fairland, died at her home Wednesday morning, March 27, 2002 after a sudden illness. She was 59. She was born to Raymond and Margaret Sitton Magness on March 4, 1943 at Chickasha, Okla. She married Norval Schubert on April 13, 1963. She worked for Eagle-Picher in Miami, Okla., for 12 years and had lived in Fairland for two years, coming from Miami. She had been a member of the First Christian Church of Fairland. She married Billy Jay on February 28, 1997 at Miami.
Survivors include: her husband, Billy Jay, of the home; a daughter, Candi and husband, Darren Anderson, of Fairland; three sons, Norval Schubert, Jr. and wife, Tammi, of Fairland, Clint Jay and wife, Laura, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Curtis Jay of Broken Arrow; a brother, Jim Magness and Nancy of Miami, Okla.; three sisters, Beth Rotman of Salina, Sue Neil Magness of Tulsa, Okla., and Lynne Honey of Miami; eight grandchildren, Sarah Spencer, and Gunnar Anderson, Samantha, Katie, and Rachael Schubert, and Hayden and Colten Jay, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Magness. She was a caring, giving, and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, at the First Christian Church in Fairland with Woody Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Afton. Serving as pallbearers will be Warren Brumley, Sonny Glass, Bert Payton, Rick Boyer, Jim Love, and Kenny Bond. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Stephens and Dr. Martin Grotheer. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Adcock Funeral Home in Fairland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairland School Softball Program in care of the funeral home. Arrangements provided by Adcock Funeral Home in Afton.

FRANCIS W. JENKINS
GROVE - Francis W. Jenkins, 94, died Sunday, December 15, 2002, at Grove Nursing Center. Mrs. Jenkins donated her body to the Oklahoma Anatomical Board for scientific research.
Francis Willard Jenkins was born on August 16, 1908, in Clovis, N.M., to James and Belle (Gordon) Southward. She was one of nine children. She was a veteran serving in the Women's Army Corp. She was married to Clifford Jenkins. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Jenkins worked in Civil Service at El Toro Marine Base, Calif., until her retirement in 1969. She had lived in the Grove area for 35 years, coming from California.
She was the beloved aunt of numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove.

THELMA VIOLA JENKS
NEOSHO, Mo. - Thelma Viola Jenks, 94, of Bernice, Okla., went to be with the Lord at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2002 after a short illness at a Neosho nursing home. She was born August 15, 1908 in Putnam, Okla., to Leon and Mary Jones, one of 13 children.
Thelma married John Ray Jenks in 1928. She spent many years working in both the aerospace industry and the hospitality industry, retiring at age 80 from Shangri-La Resort. She was a member of the Bernice Baptist Church.
She is survived by eight children, Donald Jenks of Bernice, Marcella Raberding of Cross Plains, Wis., Edward Jenks of Palm Springs, Calif., Jessie Olivier of Frisco, Texas, John Jenks of Kapaa, Hawaii, Joyce Welton of Sanger, Texas, Dwight Jenks of St. Louis, Mo., and Karen DeShazo of Lincoln, Mo.; three brothers, Merle Jones of Neosho, and Everett and Wayne Jones of Wichita, Kan.; four sisters, Gleola Barr-Williams of Wichita, Lucille Hoffman of Lawrence, Kan., Mary Box of Neosho, and Ruth Kice of Wichita; 25 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 9, at the Bernice Baptist Church in Bernice, with Pastor Butch Miller officiating. Interment followed in the Neosho IOOF Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vincent Olivier, Bob Welton, Chris Meadows, Rob Welton, Norman Raberding and Kenny Snyder. Contributions may be made to the Bernice Baptist Church, c/o P.O. Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850. Services were under the direction of Clark Funeral Home of Neosho.

GOLDIE LEE JEWETT
NOEL, Mo. - Goldie Lee Jewett, age 84, of Noel, Mo., died at 1:15 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002 at Medicalodge in Neosho, Mo., after an illness.
Mrs. Jewett was born on March 8, 1918 in Jay, Okla., to the late John and Ann (Tosh) Morgan. She had lived in Jay most of her life, moving to Noel in 1983. She was a member of the Honey Lake Church in Noel.
She married Sam Jewett, Sr. on August 3, 1937 at Commerce, Okla., he preceded her in death on June 23, 1995. Four sisters and five brothers also preceded her in death.
Survivors include: a son, Sam Jewett and wife, Vera, of Noel; two sisters, Bessie Stark of Hutchinson, Kan., and Betty Turner of Jay; three grandchildren, Alan Jewett, Jim Jewett, and Sheila Ward; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jewett will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo. Reverend Bob Cartwright will officiate. Burial will be in Herman Cemetery in Jay.
Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

JOHN ALVA JOHNSON
GROVE - John Alva "John A" Johnson, Grove, passed to heaven on Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at his home in the Council House/Turkey Ford Community. He was 67. John A. was born September 18, 1934 in Lamar Co. He resided most of his life in the Council House Community. He faithfully attended and served Council House Friends Church. He attended high school at Marionville, Mo., graduating in 1954. He served two years in the United States Army and attended two years at NEO A&M College. He was an employee of B.F. Goodrich for 28 years. He valiantly fought a long illness and continued to serve the Lord, his loved ones and dear friends in the community until passing.
His greatest love was serving others, and entertaining children and adults alike with his team of mules, Kate and Jack, and wagon. For many years, he took his wagon to the Ottawa County Fair and hauled young and old alike just for the fun of it. When he was able, he took many youngsters camping down at the mouth of Buffalo Creek near Tiff City. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Clark and Blanche Johnson, one son, John Clark Johnson, two sisters and three brothers, Eva Moss, Ivan Johnson, Hazel Ruddick, Warren Johnson, and Vernon Johnson.
Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Frankie Sue; a son, Stanley Johnson and daughter-in-law, Donna Johnson; a daughter, Kelly Teel and son-in-law, Jay Teel; five grandchildren, Jarrett Teel, Jordan Teel, John A. Johnson, William Johnson, and Grace Johnson; one brother, Emery Johnson, Marionville, Mo.; two sisters, Gladys Anderton of Seneca, Mo., and Grace Fay Makinen, Orange City, Fla.
Services will be at the Council House Friends Church on Friday, September 6, at 11 a.m. with Duane Cram and Lawrence K. Pickard officiating. He will arrive in his mule drawn wagon. Interment will be in the Council House Cemetery. Pallbearers are James Smart, Glen Bird, Bob Johnson, Charles A. Cook, Joe Lippe, and Don Ruddick. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Cass, Don Babst, Art Cousatte, Tom Nicklas, Gary Stasell, Forest Terry, Truman Hilliard and Stewart Jones.
Visitation will be at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove.

OLLIE LEE JOHNSTON
DELAWARE COUNTY, Okla. - Ollie Lee Johnston, lifetime resident of Delaware County, passed away Sunday, April , 2002 in the Quail Ridge Nursing Center, West Siloam Springs, Okla., where she had been a resident for the past several months. Mrs. Johnston, the daughter of Scott and Molly (More) Welch, was born at the family home in Delaware County, Indian Territory on April 19, 1905.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnston were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the Memorial Chapel of Garner's Green Funeral Home with the Reverends Herman Miller and Franklin Six officiating. Interment followed in the Welch Prairie Cemetery with her nine grandsons serving as casket bearers. Funeral service arrangements were under the direction of Garner's Jim Green Funeral home in Pryor, Okla.
Mrs. Johnston grew up in what was commonly called the Welch Prairie community which was named for her father. She attended school in the Delaware County IXL Rural School. On May 5, 1922 she married George Oliver Johnston at the courthouse in Jay, Okla. They shared over 54 years of marriage until his death on December 17, 1976. Mrs. Johnston lived her entire lifetime in the community, never living more than four miles from her birthplace. A hardworking homemaker, she was a loving and kind lady whose entire focus in life was her family and the Lord. Along with sewing clothes, she also was excellent at crocheting and quilting. Through the years she made large vegetable gardens each spring and then spent many hours canning the produce for her family. Another delight was attending church and singing gospel music. For many years traveling evangelists would conduct revival meetings at the IXL school house near the family home. Many of them would enjoy the hospitality of the Johnston home for meals and sometimes even lodging. A Pentecostal by faith, Mrs. Johnston will be remembered as a wonderful Christian lady by her family and friends.
Survivors include: her children, J.W. and Edith Johnston of Leach, Okla., Robert and Rose Mary Johnston of Vinita, Okla., Dewayne and Sue Johnston of Inola, Okla., and Ethel Lee and Howard Rogers of Pryor; son-in-law Bob Rich of Kenwood, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many additional relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, George Oliver Johnston, a daughter, Wynona Rich, grandson, Terry Johnston, daughter-in-law, Onelda Johnston, her parents, brothers, George and John, and sisters, Dee, Mady, Charlotte, and Ruffie.

ALVIN B. JONES
GROVE - Alvin B. Jones, age 76, died Thursday, January 10, 2002 at his home after a brief illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 14, at the First Presbyterian Church, Chanute, Kan. Rev. David Jenkins, Rev. Kenneth Silver and Supreme Court Justice Robert E. Davis will be officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery conducted by the Chanute Veterans Ritual Team. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, January 13, at Ellis Family Funeral Home, Grove.
Alvin B. Jones was born on October 13, 1925 in Coffeyville, Kan., to Harvey Lee and Ethel (Brummett) Jones. He attended Coffeyville High School and Coffeyville Community Junior College. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University where he played football, basketball and was pitcher for the baseball team. He received his Master of Science Degree in Education from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kan. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps where he was awarded the Special Unit Citation for bravery. Mr. Jones married Fran V. Jones on April, 18, 1981 in Chanute, Kan. He was a teacher and coach in Thayer, Kan., and Yates Center, Kan., where he started the first girl's basketball team in Kansas. Mr. Jones taught Architectural Drafting and was Coordinator of Vocational Education of Chanute High School for 26 years. He founded the Adult Education Program at Neosho County Community College. He retired from USD 413 in Chanute.
Mr. Jones was a life member of Phi Sigma Epsilon, member of Chanute Lions Club, Chanute, Kansas Planning and Zoning Commission, and First Presbyterian Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent, an elder, and a member of the Mariners Club.
Survivors include: his wife, Fran V. Jones, of Grove; one daughter, Jana Jones MD and her husband, Kansas Supreme Court Justice Robert E. Davis, of Leavenworth, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Belinda Janak of Wichita, Kan.; two stepsons, Rev. Kenneth Silver and his wife, Diane, of Tahlequah, Okla., and David Cattrell and his wife, Shelly, of Hiawatha, Kan. Also surviving are grandchildren, Brian Alvin Jones, Cody Janak, Aaron Defenbaugh, D.J. Cattrell and Shannon Cattrell. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalie Mae Jones, two brothers, Darwin and Delmar Jones, and one sister, Marie Edmonds.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 2106 S. Main St., Suite 315, Grove, OK 74344.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove, 918-786-5172.

JOY FAY JONES
VINITA, Okla. - Joy Fay Jones, 49-year-old Vinita resident, passed away Monday, June 3, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident.
Joy was born April 17, 1953 to Claude and Mary Jane (Straw) Englehardt. She graduated from Big Cabin High School, and worked as a nurse's aide at Eastern State Hospital and Millers Cozy Home.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include: one daughter, Amanda Michelle Jones of the home; one son, Charles Lee Jones, Jr. of Chelsea, Okla.; one sister, Anita Myrick of Kemblin, Okla.; one brother, Jeff; and one grandchild, Christopher Marvin Akers.
Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Burckhalter Memorial Chapel. Rev. Will Busch officiated. There was a cremation afterwards and burial will be at a later date in Chelsea Cemetery.
Services were under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home. .

PEGGY JO JONES
SHAWNEE, Okla. - Peggy Jo Jones, formerly of Shawnee, died January 20, 2002 at Bartlesville Memorial Hospital. She was 43.
Peggy was born July 29, 1958 to Lewis Jones and Wanda (Hedrick) Douglas at Wichita, Kan. She was a member of the Wallace Avenue Baptist Church in Shawnee.
Survivors include: her father, Lewis Jones of Disney, Okla.; her mother, Wanda Douglas of Joplin, Mo.; one brother, Mark Alan Jones of Harrah, Okla.; and two sisters, Kena Sue Purkey of Kingsville, Texas, and Sherry Ann Jones of Disney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay, Okla. Rev. Lenny Martin to officiate. Interment will be at the Duffield Cemetery in Jay. Family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

BERNICE T. KAISER
GROVE - Bernice T. Kaiser, age 87, a resident of Grove, passed away July 16, 2002 in a local nursing center.
She was born October 20,1914 in Transcona, Manitoba, Canada, to the late Patricia and Thomas Shanoski.
Bernice was a homemaker extraordinaire, a talented dancer, a seamstress and an artist. While living in Chicago, Ill., Winona, Minn., and Huron, S.D., she worked in the food service industry. Bernice and husband, Jim, loved to travel. Her favorite phrase was "I can do that."
She was a member of St. Elizabeth's Church and enjoyed working on its committees.
Bernice was predeceased by her husband, James A. Kaiser, in 1993, and daughter, Janice Kaiser, in 1950.
Survivors include: her daughters, Evelyn Newall and son-in-law, Paul, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Patricia Daum and son-in-law, Nick, of Dix, Nebraska; brothers, Alex Shanoski of Harper Woods, Mich., and Dr. Stanley Shanoski of Peoria, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.
Memorial mass will be said in Grove at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church Friday, September 13, at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass was held at an earlier date at Hot Springs Village, Ark. Burial service was in Dix, Neb.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Parker Mortuary.

LILLIAN ROSE BOWERS KARLESKINT
GROVE - Lillian Rose Bowers Karleskint, age 79, died November 14, 2002 of natural causes. She grew up in Claremore, Okla., and lived in both Kansas and California before she retired in 1976 to Grove.
She is predeceased by her husband, Charles, and her brothers, Joe Bowers and Robert Anderson, both of Grove. Lillian is survived by her siblings and their spouses: John Bowers of Tulsa, Frank and Tracia Bowers of Claremore, her sister, Sammy Munsey of Vernon, Texas, and her sister-in-law, Julia Bowers. She is also survived by her children, Christopher and Lou Karleskint of Grove, Douglas and Betty Karleskint, and Rob and Debra Karleskint Hertert, both of Portland, Ore.; and five grandchildren, Chase and Nick Karleskint, and Cary, Marcus and Robin Rose Hertert. Lillian will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews and others who remember her fondly as "Momma K."
Lillian's hobbies included landscape painting, singing, music, crafts and watching the seals. She was a beloved sister, mother, grandmom and aunt.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16, at Worley's Funeral Home, 711 South Main Street, Grove. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and the service will be at 11 a.m. The family will hold a private interment in Fort Scott, Kan., where Lillian will be buried beside her husband. Charitable donations to Good Shepherd Hospice are requested in lieu of flowers.
