EVELYN L. GATES
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Evelyn L. Gates, 70, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2003. Evelyn was born in Pleasant Hope, Mo., on October 4, 1932, to Guy and Jessie Gates. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her sister, Dorothy Rader.
She leaves behind her longtime friend of 35 years, Melinda Minks and is survived by two nephews, Don Whitworth and wife, Kathy and Carl Rader and wife, Donna; niece, Gay Johannes and husband, Chris; great nieces, Angela Phipps and husband, Gregg, Tiffany Whitworth, Danielle, Jaclyn and Madeline Johannes, and Michelle and Jessica Rader; great nephew, Zack Whitworth; brother-in-law, Leon Rader; and close friends Donna Wessner and Michelle McTernan.
Evelyn retired from Kansas University Medical Center in July of 2002 after 48 years of service. She was a histology technician and prepared autopsy slides. She loved her job and the folks she worked with. A person of many talents, she was admired professionally by the doctors and staff alike. She added to the education of many of the student doctors who passed through the K.U. School of Medicine. Her skills in preparing slides were admired by those whom she served.
Her avocation was sports, from playing third base and pitcher on the Kansas City Dons, a softball touring team, to officiating softball, basketball and volleyball. She was admired by coaches, student athletes and parents on and off the field or court. Evelyn was a woman of many firsts. She was first and foremost a "people person." She loved to visit and never met a stranger. She was the first woman in the state of Missouri to referee a boy's high school varsity basketball game. She officiated the first women's NAIA tournament game held in Kansas City. She was a softball umpire, a basketball referee and a volleyball official on both the high school and college level, officiating all phases of competition from state to national tournaments. In addition to her officiating, she loved fishing for crappie. She was honored to be a Crappie Queen in Green Brier Resort in Oklahoma. She was a friend to all who knew her, at work, in sports and in life. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She will be sorely missed by those who have known her.
Friends will gather to celebrate her life Friday, May 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maple Hill Funeral Home, 3300 Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, Kan. The funeral will be at Bethany Baptist Church, 141 N. Lawndale, Kansas City, Mo., Saturday morning, May 10, at 10 a.m., with a viewing beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a graveside service and interment at Pleasant Hope Cemetery, Pleasant Hope, Mo., at 3 p.m., Saturday. Please do not send flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evelyn Gates Memorial Fund, c/o Blue Ridge Bank and Trust Co., 4240 Blue Ridge Blvd., Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64133, or your favorite charity. The memorial will fund the "Evelyn Gates Memorial Female Sports Official of the Year award presented in conjunction with the WIN for KC (Women's Intersport Network) Sports Day Recognition luncheon held every February, as well as sports clinics for female athletes.

DAVID L. GAY
COMMERCE, Okla. - David L. Gay, a resident of Commerce, died Monday, May 12, 2003 at 10:14 a.m. at Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, Okla. after an automobile accident near Quapaw. He was 45. He was born March 14, 1958 in Broken Arrow, Okla. to Edward Eugene and Mary June (Miller) Gay. He had lived in the Miami area since 1966. He graduated from Miami High School in 1976, and attended the University of Oklahoma where he graduated with a master's degree in social services in 1997. He was employed by ROCMND Youth Services in Jay. He was a member of College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, Mo., the Social Work Honor Society and NRA. He married Sharon Seward at Vian, Okla., Jan. 1, 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of the home; son, Christian John Edward Gay of the home; two daughters, Melanie Dawn Nau of Dodge City, Kan., Heather Beth Gay of Drumright, Okla.; one step-son, Tyler Nicholas Thulin of the home; step-daughter and husband, Crystal Lyn and Christopher of Stalling, Joplin, Mo.; mother, Mary Jane Gay of Miami; brother, Jim Gay of Miami.
Services will be held Thursday, May 15 at 1 p.m. at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, officiated by Randy Gariss. Interment will be at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Okla. at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami.

MABLE H. GLAD
GROVE - Mable H. Glad, 82, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Grove General Hospital. Mable H. Glad was born on July 1, 1920, in Columbia, Kan. to George and Anna Meeker. She lived in southeast Kansas her entire live. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Glad, her parents, one brother, and one sister.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Schnell and husband, Doug of Grove and Linda Lopez of Los Altos, Calif.; four grandchildren, Rick Lawson and wife, Jo of Fayetteville, Ark., Holly Lawson, Joplin, Mo., Mandy Lopez, San Diego, Calif. and Dustin Muse, Miami Beach, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Victoria Lawson, Fayetteville; two sisters, Frances Robinson and husband, Joe of Columbus, Kan. and Mamie Zwahlen, Columbus; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Services will be under the direction of Friskel Funeral Home, Frontenac, Kan. Visitation will be held Thursday evening, and the funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 21.

LEROY GLASS
JAY, Okla. - Leroy Glass, age 52, died on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Integris Grove General Hospital. He was born July 9, 1950, in Claremore, Okla. to Ida Mae Glass. Leroy was an artist and had lived in Kansas, Okla., most of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two sons, Gordon Glass and wife, Shannon of Jay and Daniel Glass of Oaks, Okla.; three grandchildren, Crystal Glass, Randy Wolf and Jennifer Wolf, all of Jay; two sisters Eve Glass and Lena Rogers; and brothers Alfred Wyly, Jerry Wyly and Walter M. Standingwater.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ronnie Glass and Louis Glass.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 4, at 2 p.m., at Twin Oaks Baptist Church, with Richard Budder and James O'Field officiating. Burial will follow at Long Prairie Cemetery, Kansas, Okla. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 3, at 7 p.m.
Services are under the directions of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral home, Jay.

BARBARA FAY GLASSCOX
COMMERCE, Okla. - Barbara Fay Glasscox, 59, of Commerce, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Baptist Regional Health Center after in illness.
Mrs. Glasscox was born May 11, 1943 in Spearman, Texas to Aubrey O. and Ruby (Tyson) Patterson. She has lived in the Commerce area most of her life.
She was married to Gareld Glasscox. He preceded her in death October 11, 1990. Mrs. Glasscox was a homemaker and a member of the Northwest Baptist Church Miami.
She is survived by: her mother, Ruby Tyson Patterson Bammes of Derby, Kan.; two sons, David Scott Johnson of Miami, Okla. and Nathaniel Richard Johnson of Commerce; two daughters, Lorene Barbara Tobias of Wichita, Kan. and Tonda Fay Johnson of Commerce; one brother, Aubrey O. Patterson, Jr. of Wichita; three sisters, Linda J. Patterson of Derby, Beverly A. Witt of Stockton, Calif. and Diane L. Kreskas of Udall, Kan.; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 1, at Northeast Baptist Church in Miami, Rev. Robert Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in the G.A.R. Cemetery under the direction of the Guilford Thomas Funeral Home, Commerce. Pallbearers are Wes Woodcock, Wesley Hart, Ryan Hart, Butch Lowry, Don Dovekey and Bobby Foote.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday, January 31, at the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home, Commerce.

CHARLES W. GOLDNER SR.
Jay- Charles W. Goldner, Sr., 90 year old area resident, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2003 at the Grand Lake Villa Nursing home following an extended illness.
Charles was born October 13, 1913 in Warren, Ohio to George B. and Gusta (Huntley) Goldner. He was a graduate of Western Reserve College in Cleveland, Ohio. Charles served his country during World War II with the Navy Corps as a Lt. Commander in the Pacific Theatre. He worked as a corporate executive for the Kawner Corporation,
Charles was united in marriage to Marye Louise Miller on September 1, 1941. She preceded him in death in November of 1988.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Marilou, two brothers, Bill and George Goldner and one sister Dorothy.
Charles was a member of the First Assembly of God in Jay, Okla. He was proud to have served his country and was proud of his family.
Surviving family members include: one daughter, Susie Hajek and husband Bob of Longmont, Colo., three sons, Bill Goldner and wife Linda of Disney, Okla., Charles W. Goldner, Jr. and wife Susan of Little Rock, Ark., Matthew Goldner and wife Christine Murphy of Atlanta, Ga., one sister Austa Finch of phoenix, Ariz., one brother, Jim Goldner of Myrtle Beach, N.C., thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the First Assembly of God in Jay, Okla. Pastor Bill Goldner will officiate. Interment will be in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Turner Funeral Chapel of Jay.

SARAH ILIA GREEN
GROVE - Sarah Ilia Green passed away at the Grove Nursing Center on Sun., Feb. 16, 2003, after a short illness.
Ilia was born Oct. 19, 1914 in Bromide, Okla., the daughter of Carl and Rosa Bell Keener.
She married William James Green on July 14, 1935 in Durant, Okla. Ilia and her husband made their home and raised their family in South Carolina. After the death of her husband, she attended Southeastern State College in Durant and received a teaching degree. She taught elementary school in the El Paso, Texas area for 20 years before retiring in Bartlesville and then moving to Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband; son Wendell; sister Elizabeth Beavers; and brothers Otis and Newton Keener.
Survivors include son William J. Green, Jr. and wife Lillian, Yucaipa, Calif.; daughter Sara Todd and husband Donnie, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter Rosemary Ballard and husband Ben, of Grove; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Ilia will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Grove, at 2 p.m. on Thurs., Feb. 20. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church in her memory.

GERALD "BUD" GREEN
Grove, Okla. - Gerald "Bud" Green, 73, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Integris Grove General Hospital. Bud Green was born on May 2, 1930 in Portales, N.M. to G. C. and Maurine Cordelia (Corning) Green. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. Bud married Juanita Eileen Dunn in December, 1975 in Grove. He worked for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and was a carpenter doing construction in Grove for 12 years. Bud was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Grove Moose Lodge, American Legion, and the Grove Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen of Grove; four children, Deborah Ann Estleman of Lake Whitmore, Mich., Lanette Masey of Miami, Okla., Gerald Green, Jr. also of Miami, William B. Green of Tishomingo, Okla.; two stepchildren, Pam Peters of Oklahoma City, Rick Albin of Owasso; two brothers, Jack Green of Altoona, Florida, William C. Green of Burnsville, Minn..; fifteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ors C. Profit.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. , Friday, October 10, 2003 at the First Christian Church with Dr. Wane Shaw officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery with Grove Masonic Lodge performing Masonic Rites and the Grove Veterans Ritual Team performing Military Rites. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Moose Lodge Scholarship Fund. Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Grove.

NILS ARNOLD GRODAL
GROVE, Okla. - Nils Arnold Grodal, 59, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at his home. No services are planned at this time.
Nils Grodal was born on February 13, 1944, in Seattle, Wash., to Nils O. and Anna (Lunnum) Grodal. He was married to Karolyn Koehne. Mr. Grodal worked as a wireman during his lifetime. He had lived in Grove for one year moving from Bly, Ore. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. His hobbies included woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Karolyn of Grove; one son, Jens Groday of Bly; one daughter, Kirsten Grodal of Grove; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Valborg Koehne of Grove; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove.

MARVIN WINTER GRUNDEN
Marvin Winter Grunden, 84 year-old Vinita resident, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Craig General Hospital.
He was born July 25, 1919 to Johny Henry Grunden and Mary Elizabeth (Keifer) Grunden. Marvin married Pearl Ward on June 6, 1942 at Vinita.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl of the home; two daughter, Mary Anne Allison and Irene Cornwell of Vinita; a son, Charles Grunden of Vinita; a brother, Art Grunden of Vinita; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His parents and one grandchild preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burckhalter Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, October, 1, 2003.
Memorial graveside services will be held Monday, October 6, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Skip McClain officiating.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Bunker Hill Baptist Church.
Services are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.

RITA WYVONNE GUTHRIE
GRAVETTE, Ark. - Wyvonne Guthrie, 55-year-old resident of Gravette, died Saturday, April 12, 2003 at her home. Born August 20, 1947, in Prairie Grove, Ark., she was the daughter of Lenard Guthrie and Phyllis Butler Guthrie. Wyvonne had lived most of her life in Northwest Arkansas and Northeast Oklahoma, living a short time in California. She was a graduate of Westville High School and had attended John Brown University. Wyvonne was a USDA inspector and union steward for Peterson Industries in Decatur, Ark. She was a member of the Northern Cherokee Tribe and AARP. Wyvonne enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, working cattle on the farm and riding motorcycles.
Survivors include two sons, Gary McAlpin of Dubuque, Ia. and John Linde of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two grandsons, Ian McAlpin and Liam McAlpin; one granddaughter, Hannah Linde; her mother, Phyllis Guthrie of Siloam Springs, Ark.; one brother, Cecil Guthrie of Colcord, Okla.; two sisters, Jean Larsen of Colcord and Helen Warren of Pineville, Mo.; one half brother, Paul Myers of Abilene, Texas; a number of nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Clay Gilbert of the home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at Wasson Memorial Chapel, Siloam Springs, with Rev. Tom West officiating. Cremation will follow funeral services.
