LEE MURRAY
GROVE, Okla. - Lee Murray, age 73, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2003. He was born in Goodman, Mo., to Clarence and Pearl Murray.
Lee Murray was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. He was a Korean War Veteran with the Air Force and a long time business man in Tulsa, Okla. His passions were poetry and horse racing.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, one step-son, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 1653 113th St. N.W., Grove, on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m.

JACK C. NAYLOR
MIAMI, Okla. - Jack C. Naylor of Monkey Island, died at 4:20 a.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at Integris Baptist Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was 69.
Mr. Naylor was born at Conser, Okla., to General Lee and Matrel (Caughern) Naylor. He graduated from the Heavner High School in 1951. he received his Associate degree from Carl Albert Junior College at Wilburton, Okla. He also received a degree from Northeastern State College at Tahlequah in Industrial Arts. He later attended Kansas University where he received his masters degree in higher Education and received his E.E.D. degree from the University of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.
He did special assignments in Indian education with Sen. Pierson when he was dean at the Haskell Indian Institute. Mr. Naylor had moved from Lawrence, Kan. to Miami in 1977.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and spent two years at West Point where he was engaged in a special assignment pertaining to jeeps.
He was later employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Miami before retiring in 1995.
He was a member of the Wichita Falls, Texas Masonic Lodge and the Consistory of Dallas. He was a member of the Choctaw Indian Tribe and the Immanuel Baptist church of Miami.
He married Sue Richardson on December 20, 1962 at Wichita Falls and she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter Nikki Naylor Bayne of McKinney, Texas; a brother Carlous Naylor of Conser, Okla.; a granddaughter Jacqueline Taylor Bayne of McKinney.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Jacqueline Christine Naylor on December 9, 1986.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, December 13, at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Heavner Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Oklahoma Medical Foundation for heart research.

ELSIE PAULINE NEEL
GROVE, Okla. - Elsie Pauline Neel, 82, died at Grove Nursing Center on Sunday, May 18, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, at Council House Church. Burial will follow at Council House Cemetery. Visitation is being held from 5 p.m., Monday until 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Seneca Cayuga Multi-Purpose Center on Highway 10 north of Grove.
Elsie Pauline Neel was born on June 1, 1920 in Ottawa County, Okla. to Rufus Herman and Mary Esther (Winnie) Smith. She attended school at Wyandotte Indian School and Chilocco Indian School. She worked as a nurse's aid for Kennedy Home Health. Mrs. Neel was a member of the Independent Assembly House of Worship, Grove, Disabled American Veterans and Seneca Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.
Survivors include one son, Richard Woltering; three daughters, Rosetta Spottedhorse of Oklahoma, Wynema Harris of Missouri and Winnie Lahunta Davis of Wyandotte; one sister, Lahunta Thompson of Grove; one brother, Wayne Smith and wife, Donna of Wyandotte; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, Grove.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove.

HENRY GEORGE NEHRING
MIAMI, Okla. - Henry George Nehring of Miami, died at 5:35 a.m., Monday, June 2, 2003 at Miami Nursing Center after a long illness. He was 85.
Mr. Nehring was born March 10, 1918 in Mound Valley, Kan. to Theodore and Charlotte (Fowler) Nehring. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1937. he was a veteran, serving in the Army Signal Corps in Europe during World War II.
He married Clara Maneth in August 1948. She preceded him in death in 1990. He married Earldine (Becky) Ramey on February 14, 1991. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two married children, Rex and Linda Nehring of Miami and Karen and Dr. Mark Haslett of Parsons, Kan.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Nehring worked in the Miami area from 1948 until retiring in 1983, as a housing and retail businessman owning Nehring Supply, ABC Supply in Joplin and Miami, and President of ABR Supply in Cushing, Okla. Henry was also involved in raising purebred Santa Gertudes cattle from 1973 to 1993.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, June 4, at Williams Timber Hill Cemetery east of Welch, Okla. with Minister Leon Weece officiating. American Legion Post 147 Veterans Funeral Detail will provide military honors. Memorials are suggested to a favorite charity in care of the funeral home.
Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home of Miami is in charge of arrangements.

WYNONA NELSON
JAY, Okla. - Wynona Nelson, 89, died Sunday, February 9, 2003 at Forrest Retirement Center, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Wynona Nelson was born on March 17, 1913 in Stilwell, Okla. to Samuel J. and Nell (Whitmire) Starr. She received her teaching certificate from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla. and her Master's Degree from Oklahoma A& M in 1953. She taught at Oak Hill School for 12 years. She married Ralph Nelson on March 5, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Nelson taught in the Jay School system from 1947 until her retirement in 1976. She organized the Delaware County Historical Society in 1976 and became its first president. She helped organize special literacy program and volunteered to be one of the first instructors. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jay.
Survivors include two sisters Sammie Jo Clemons, Bethany, Okla. and Jeanne Crittendon, Charlotte N.C.; one brother James (Bill) Starr, Oklahoma City, Okla.; three nieces Mary Crossley, Mustang, Okla., Jan Johnson, Charlotte, N.C., Charli Calloway, College Station, Texas; two nephews Richard W. Starr, Houston, Texas and Joe Crittendon, South Lake, Texas; two great nieces Robin Weimer, Springfield, Mo. and Debrah Overacre, Fairland, Okla. She was preceded in death by one nephew Roddy Reid, whom she raised, one brother and one sister.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 12, at the First United Methodist Church, Jay with Rev. R.T. Perry officiating. Burial will follow at Duffield Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay.

BILLIE "JOE" NETHERTON
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Billie "Joe" Netherton, 66, of Richards, Mo., died Sunday, October 12, 2003, at Kansas University Medical Center after an extended illness. Joe was the youngest of eight children born to Thomas Boone "TB" Netherton and Bessie Shackleford Netherton in Maysville, Ark. Joe attended high school in Jay, Okla., where he did well in school and excelled in sports, especially football and baseball. He continued his education at the University of Wyoming where he was an outstanding player with the Wyoming Cowboys baseball and football teams. While at the University he met Phyllis Carolyn Spain and they were married. After receiving a Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics, the couple moved to Vernon County, Mo., where they started raising cattle and grain, enlarging the business over the years to what is now known as the Netherton Box N Ranch.
Joe is survived by his wife Phyllis of the home; two sons Jeff and Jim of Richards; daughter-in-law Kristin of Richards; one grandson Landon Joseph of Richards; mother-in-law Maurine Spain of Nevada, Mo.; two sisters Alice Netherton Goddard of Hotchkiss, Colo., Pat Netherton Palm of Albin, Wyo.; and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Tom, Jim, Rex, Mack and one sister Mary Jane.
Joe always enjoyed his family and the agricultural life. He also enjoyed sports, politics, world events and blues music. Joe affected many lives and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 15, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, with John Nichols officiating. Interment followed in East Liberty Cemetery, close to the Netherton ranch.
Donations may be made to the Joe Netherton Foundation for the benefit of ALS and Autism research in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
Arrangements were under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada, MO 64772.

OPAL NEW
GROVE - Opal New passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2003 in Grove, at the age of 87. She was born June 23, 1915 in Wetumka, Okla. to James Harrison and Beulah Cameron Harrison. Opal was raised in Yeager, Okla. and attended school in Fairview, Okla. At the age of 16, the family moved to Holdenville, Okla., where she remained until 1938 when she married Bob Sweeden in Yuma, Ariz. The couple made their home in El Centro, Calif., where they lived for 35 years. Opal worked in a produce shipping company and was a long-time member of the Eagles Lodge #1559 in El Centro. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob Sweeden, son-in-law Glen Knudtson, brother Grady Harrison, sisters Eula LaFaye, Ila House, Clara Lollis, and Juanita Harrison.
Survivors include daughter Cherylan Knudtson of Rockaway Beach, Mo.; grandsons, David Closner of Grove and Robert Doom of Bernice; granddaughter Deanna Closner of Grove; sister Kathryn Shirley and husband, Roy, of Yeager.
Other survivors include seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held Thursday, February 6, at Yeager Cemetery with Rev. Jim Crawford officiating. Burial was under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.

ANTHONY CLINT "TONY" NICHOLS
JAY, Okla. - Anthony "Tony" Nichols, 60, died Mon., Feb. 17, 2003 at Integris Grove General Hospital.
Tony Nichols was born on Jan. 23, 1943 in Harlingen, Texas to Clint Carl and Virginia (Cowan) Nichols. He graduated from Miami High School, Miami, Okla. in 1960. He continued his education at Northeastern Oklahoma College, Miami. Mr. Nichols married Claudene Frazier on Aug. 12, 1961, in Miami. He was an Oklahoma Highway Patrolman for 28 years, retiring in 1997. Four years after his retirement, he went to work for GRDA. He was a member of the Nazarene Church, Miami, Retired Trooper's Association, previous president of the Wildlife Association and an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife Claudene, of Jay; one son Brent Nichols, and wife Cara, Grove; one daughter Pam Newkirk, and husband John, of Jay; his mother Virginia Nichols; one sister Imogene Alberty, Salina, Okla.; five grandchildren, Christopher Newkirk, Trenton Nichols, Michael Newkirk, Brennan Nichols and Joshua Newkirk.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thurs., Feb. 20, at Jay Community Center with Rev. Loyd Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Salina Cemetery, Salina. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m., Wed., Feb. 19 at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay.
Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, Oklahoma.

FRED W. NICHOLS
DURANGO, Colo. - Fred W. Nichols, a resident of Durango, died Thursday evening February 6, 2003 at a local nursing home in Miami, Okla. at the age of 89 years.
He was born October 14, 1913 in Goodland Kan. to Wilfred S. and Vida B. (Bryan) Nichols. He moved to Durango in 1929 and graduated from Durango High School in 1931. He had been a resident of the Miami area for the past four months. He was married to Josephine "Jo" O' Brien in 1938. She preceded him in death on June 11, 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II. He later married Ruth M. Richards on March 3, 1948. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1993. He was member of the Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge #507. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Durango after 35 years of service.
He is survived by two sons Richard F. Nichols of Littleton, Colo., Mark Nichols, of Grants, N.M.; three daughters Bernice Harmer of Colorado Springs, Colo., Deanne Brown, of Vinita, Okla., and Debra Janus, of Bay Field, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday, February 11, at 2 p.m., at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East 3rd Ave., in Durango, with Rev. Jeff Huber officiating. Interment will be at the Greemount Cemetery in Durango.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hood Mortuary Durango, with local arrangements under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home, of Miami.

JOAN ROSS NIX
Joan Ross Nix, 72 year-old former Vinita resident, passed away Friday, September 26, 2003 at San Antonio, Texas.
Joan was born December 8, 1930, in Strang, Okla. She was the beloved daughter of Frank Ross and Tennie (Manners) Ross. Joan was the devoted wife of William (Bill) Armour Nix who preceded her in death in 2001.
Joan was an active member of the Northside Bridge Club. She participated in the Vinita High School reunion in June 2003, where she renewed old acquaintances and made special new friends.
She is survived by her children, Lynn Meyer, of Denver; Judy Osborne and husband, Don, of West Hills, CA, and Joe Nix and wife, Jodel of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Veronica Campbell of Chicago; Brian Nix and Stacy Nix of San Antonio; Tori Meyer of DeKalb, IL; David Meyer of Denver; Chris Osborne of West Hills, CA; Katie and Sara Nix of Grove. Joan adored her great-grandson, Dylan Campbell, and she enjoyed her step-great grandchildren, Ronnie, Ally, Andee, and Aubrey Kersh.
She was precede in death by her son, Bill Jr., on September 4, 2003.
Graveside services will be at the Spavinaw/Strang Cemetery, Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Northside Church of Christ at a later date.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society or for leukemia research.
Services are under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home.
