Prewitt

A granddaughter of pioneer settlers of Jackson County, Oklahoma, Mrs. Ira C. Prewitt was born Jan. 1, 1906, in Eldorado. Her grandparents homesteaded land there during the 1890's. Her father, Roland Woolsey Summers, was associated with his father in the hardware store business. Her mother was Pearl Elizabeth (Tucker) Summers of Victoria County, Texas.

Familiarly known as "Dede," Prewitt was named for her uncle, Dr. DeWitt C. Buck, who lived in the first house built in Eldorado.

After attending Oklahoma College for Women and Oklahoma City University, Dede was married on June 28, 1925, to Ira Clement Prewitt, son of M.J. and Ada Prewitt of Eldorado.

Following their marriage, the couple moved to Altus, where he was a pharmacist for the Royal Drug Store. After serving in the Army during World War II, he purchased and operated the South Main Drug Store in Altus until his death on July 28, 1962.

Mrs. Prewitt found time to operate her own beauty shop for 20 years while raising the couple's two children. She also helped in her husband's drug store both before and after the years when she ran her beauty shop.

The Prewitts also owned a two-section ranch located between Altus and Eldorado on which the first commercial copper mine in Oklahoma was operated during the 1960s and 70s.

She was an active and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Altus for 60 years. She was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent for more than 30 years. She also organized the Intermediate Youth Fellowship and worked with it for about 15 years.

Additionally, she was a member of the Chancel Choir for more than 40 years. She also served as president and held other offices for her Methodist Women's organization, as well as served on the administrative board and several commissions of her church.

Some of her other activities included volunteer work with the American Cancer Society for 20 years, the Infantile Paralysis Association for 10 years, and the Jackson County Hospital Authority for four years.

A charming hostess and entertaining conversationalist with many interests, Mrs. Prewitt was elected the Altus Kiwanis Club Mother of the Year for 1976-77. She was also a member of the Clionian Study Club for 33 years and its president for four years, as well as member of the American Association of China Painters.

An excellent bridge player, Dede also enjoyed reading, china painting and traveling. A list of her travels indicated a sense of adventure, for besides the Holy Lands and most of Europe, she visited the Far East, Africa, South America, Hawaii, the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

Very outgoing, friendly and congenial, Dede's delightful personality attracted people as she was a very understanding, warm and loving human being.

Mrs. Werta Reid, Dede's next door neighbor in Altus for 21 years, said of Dede when she moved to Denver, "I consider her a loyal friend and a kind and helpful neighbor, as well as a joy to be with and to know. I shall miss her."

Mrs. Prewitt moved from Altus in 1983 to be with her daughter in Denver. She moved again in 1994 with her daughter to Missoula, Mont.

She had two children, Joan Eger of Missoula, Mont. and Robert C. Prewitt of Aurora, Colo. She had six grandchildren and two great grandsons.

A devoted Christian and a loyal, supportive member of the Methodist Church, Dede had a high moral character. Throughout her life, she reflected God's beauty and was a wonderful example of what it is to have a close walk with the Lord.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center.

She died Friday. A memorial service will be held in the future.
