FERNITA (ARNOLD) SCOTT
PRYOR, Okla. - Fernita (Arnold) Scott, 92-year old area resident, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Colonial Terrace Care Center in Pryor.
Fernita was born February 11, 1911 at Jericho Springs, Mo., to Frank and Eva (Johnson) Arnold. Her family moved to Centralia in 1925 where she attended school until graduating from Centralia High School. She was a homemaker. Fernita lived in Vinita for 27 years before moving to Adair in 1970. She has lived in Adair and Pryor for the past 33 years.
Fernita was united in marriage to Pearl E. Scott, Sr., in 1938. He preceded her in death on February 5, 1981.
Her parents, one son, two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.
Surviving family members include, one son, Junior Scott and wife, Maxine of Adair; one grandson, Kenneth Scott of Adair; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31, at Strang-Spavinaw Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, May 30, at the Burckhalter Funeral Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.

JULIA K. SCOTT
PRYOR, Okla. - Julia K. Scott, 85 went to be with her Lord on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the Mayes County Medical Center in Pryor. Julia was born on September 25, 1917 in Mayes County, the daughter of Tom and Lena (Fodder) King. She married the late Joe Scott and they had made their home in the Salina-Kenwood, Okla. area. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Kenwood. Julia loved reading, especially her Bible and devotional books. She was a quilter, leaving beautiful heirlooms for her family. Julia enjoyed keeping up with news, reading her local newspapers daily. She was a woman of faith, loving her family, friends and church and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 3, at the Euwasha Cemetery at Kenwood, with Reverend Woodrow Ross officiating. A Wake service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening in the Shipman’s Jim Green Funeral Chapel. Services were under the direction of Shipman’s Jim Green Funeral Home.
Julia is survived by: five sons, John Scott and wife, Allie, of Kenwood; Robert Scott and wife, Lou Ann, of Kenwood, Randy Scott of Salina, Richard Scott and wife, Markita, of Salina, and James Scott and wife, Janelle Cochran, of Little Kansas, Okla.; two daughters, Velma Davis of Little Kansas, and Brenda and husband, Woody Hair, of Kenwood; one brother, Levi King of Salina; 20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Scott; one son, Jerry Wayne Scott; two sisters, Susie Muskrat and Anna Mae King Cochran.

REV. COY JEAN SCROGGINS
LOCUST GROVE, Okla., – Funeral services for Rev. Coy Jean Scroggins, 76 of Locust Grove, were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the First Assembly of God Church, Pryor, Okla. Pastor Steve McPherson, Rev. Floyd Renfro, and Pastor Harry Jackson officiated with interment following in Hogan Cemetery South, Locust Grove. Services were under the direction of the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
Scroggins was born July 8, 1927 in Wynona, Okla., to Frank and Beula (Terral) Scroggins. He passed from this life on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, in Tulsa.
He grew up around Peggs, Locust Grove, and Tahlequah, Okla. and graduated from Tulsa Central High School. He served one enlistment in the US Army and was honorably discharged. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from Northeaster State University, and taught for over 30 years at schools in the area, including Smith Chapel, Salina, Little Rock, Jay, and Spavinaw schools in Oklahoma. He had also been a licensed minister in the Assembly of God Church since 1956; he spent 35 years in the ministry and pastored five churches.
He was married to Nancy Harmer on July 26, 1963, in Muskogee, Okla. He had been in the Locust Grove area since his retirement in 1985, coming from Jay. He enjoyed fishing, cutting wood and deer hunting, and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He attended the First Assembly of God in Pryor.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Scroggins of the home; two sons, Darren and wife Tammy Scroggins of Jay, and LaRay Scroggins; brother J.D. “Corky” and wife Ardena Scroggins of Bartlesville; three sisters, Rhoda Johnston, Wanda and husband Tommy Doyle, all of Pryor, and Nora Lee Whitaker of Kenwood, Okla.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents; one brother, Billy Ray Scroggins; and two sisters, Fay Johnson and Edna Mae Holt.

PATRICIA J. SEWELL
GROVE - Patricia J. Sewell, 56, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla.
Patricia Joyce Sewell was born October 14, 1946 in McPherson, Kan. to Glen C. and Bonnie (Pinegar) Hall. She was a member of Cornerstone Church, Grove. She was formerly a member of Christian Life Center in Liberal, Kan. before moving to Grove. She had lived in the Grove area for three years coming from Liberal.
Survivors include: her husband Maurice Sewell, Grove; her mother Bonnie Wolf, Grove; two sons, Dr. Mark A. Sewell and wife, Dr. Regina Sewell, Springdale, Ark. and Timothy S. Sewell and wife, Katie Sewell, Grove; three sister, Nada Tuman, Ulysses, Kan., Roberta Boyd, Grove and Sudy Schmidt and husband, Paul, of Grove; one grandson Braegan Andrew Sewell.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 8, at Cornerstone Church with Pastor Bill Lay and Pastor Ken Willard of Christian Life Center, Liberal, officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, at Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Kan. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 7, at the funeral home.
Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove.

PATRICIA ANN SHACKELFORD
JAY, Okla. - Patricia Ann Shackelford, 67, died Friday, April 11, 2003 at her home.
Patricia Shackelford was born on March 26, 1936 in Stillwater, Okla. to Orphas M. and Lucille E. (Walton) Triplett. She married Warren Shackelford on March 27, 1954 in Jay. She attended NEO in Miami and received her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Mrs. Shackelford was a teacher at Jay Elementary School for 33 years. She was Teacher of the Year in 1986. She was an active member of Southside Church if Christ, Jay. She loved watching sports on TV with her husband.
Survivors include her husband, Warren of Jay; one son, Larry Shackelford and wife, Jill of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sisters, Doris Wilson of Oklahoma City and Donna Graham of Munster, Texas; three grandsons, Joshua Dale Shackelford and wife, Lyndie Joy of Edina, Minn., Joel Lee Shackelford of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Jonathan Ray Shackelford of Broken Arrow. Her parents preceded her in death.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 14 at Southside Church of Christ, Jay with Pastor Steve Stenzel and Pastor Bill Richardson officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in care of Arvest Bank in Jay.
Services were under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay.

MARY ELIZABETH SHEARIN
Mary Elizabeth Shearin, 85 year old longtime area resident, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Tulsa, Oklahoma following an extended illness.
Mary was born September 8, 1918 at Wellington, Kansas to Owen Jessie Davis and Bertha Louise (Church) Davis. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Strang, Oklahoma. Mary's hobbies were making ceramics, reading, and crocheting.
Mary was united in marriage to Henry B. Shearin on May 14, 1938, at Newkirk, Okla. He preceded her in death.
Her parents two brothers, Jackson and Allen Davis and tow sisters, Edith and Florence also preceded her in death.
Surviving family members include: one daughter, Gayle Burt and husband Tony of Broken Arrow, Okla., three sons, John Lee Shearin and wife Mary Ellen of Grove, Henry Bernard Shearin and wife Sally of Wickenburg, Arizona and Jack Raymond of Strang, Okla., eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 13, 2003, at the Turner Funeral Chapel in Langley, Okla. Rev. Keith Mackey will officiate. Interment will be in the Six Killer Cemetery, in Afton, Okla.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2003, at the Turner Funeral Chapel in Langley.
Services are entrusted to Turner Funeral Chapel of Langley, Okla.

ROBERT EUGENE (BOB) SHERE
AFTON, Okla. - Robert Eugene (Bob) Shere, 55, of Afton, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital in Muskogee, Okla. after an illness.
Mr. Shere was born April 20, 1947 in Coffeyville, Kan. to Alva E. and Flora M. (LaDuke) Shere. He has lived in Afton since 1981, moving from Eureka, Kan. He was an Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War.
Mr. Shere was a machinist and worked for Kips & Roberts in Miami, Okla. for many years. He was a member of the Ribbon Baptist Church in Spavinaw, Okla., the D.A.V. in Commerce, Okla., American Legion in Afton and the V.F.W. in Miami, where he was a past-president.
Mr. Shere married Iva Nell Muskrat on May 1, 1992 in Ozark, Mo. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by one son, Richard Shere of Anderson, Mo.; four stepsons, Jim and Gary Case of Emporia, Kan., Ben Case of Bonner Springs, Kan. and Hank Case of Afton; four daughters, Michelle and Angela Clark of Reese, Kan., Melissa Patton of Seneca, Mo. and Amanda Wilson of Chelsea, Okla.; two stepdaughters, June Case of Bernice, Okla. and Joyce Glover of Granby, Mo. ; two brothers William Shere of Tucson, Ariz. and David Shere of Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters, Ruth Foust of Fairland, Okla. and Betty Swinehart of Afton; 11 grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, at the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home in Afton. Rev. Russell Feeling will officiate. The NEO Veterans Funeral Detail in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens east of Miami will conduct military graveside rites.
Pallbearers will be Richard Shere, Jim Case, Gary Case, Ben Case, Lee Case and Keith Case.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, at the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home, Afton.

MARGARET "MARTY" SHERRELL
GROVE, Okla. - Margaret A. Sherrell passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2003, at Monroe Manor after a long illness. Services will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, at Ellis Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dolphus Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at Butler Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, at the funeral home.
Margaret was born on June 18, 1914 in Webb City, Mo. to Thomas and Carrie Chapman. She graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1932 and married James E. Sherrell on February 9, 1935 in Sapulpa, Okla. They lived in Tulsa until 1939, then they moved to Wichita, Kan., where Jim was employed with Boeing Aircraft. Mr. and Mrs. Sherrell then moved to Grove in 1946 and purchased an undeveloped acreage south of Grove and started a small fishing resort known as Sherrell's Honey Creek Cabins and Fishing.
Margaret was a loving, devoted mother who always put her family first, but she was also an active member of the Grand Lake Association and Honey Creek Association during the early years of Grand Lake. She was a pioneer of the Grove area resort business and took an active role promoting Grand Lake during the 1940s and 1950s.
Margaret wore many hats as the co-owner of Sherrell's. She was a bookkeeper, Cabin Cleaner, Fishing Guide, Marketing Person and above all a wife and a mom. Fishermen that patroned Sherrell's could always count on Margaret for hot fishing tips, a hot cup of coffee and a lending ear to those who needed one.
Survivors include one daughter Juanita Sherrell of Grove; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother William Hulen and his wife Barbara of Bixby, Okla.; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1938, one son Larry in 1978, and her husband Jim in 1989.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grove Education Foundation For Excellence.
Services are entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, 107 S. Broadway, Grove.

BARBARA SUE SHIPP
GROVE, Okla. - Barbara Sue Shipp, 64, died early Tuesday morning, April 22, 2003 at Grove Nursing Center.
Sue was born on Feb. 2, 1939 in Sulphur, Okla. to H.L. and Era (Daniels) Stephens. She married Richard Shipp on May 20, 1956 in Oklahoma City, Okla. She worked in banking while living in Oklahoma City. She and her husband moved to Grove 12 years ago, moving from Oklahoma City. While in Grove she loved fishing, growing flowers and sewing. She worked at the Grove Wal-Mart for a short while to fill her time. She was a member of the First Southern Assembly in Oklahoma City.
Survivors include her husband, Richard of Grove; two grandsons, Christopher Michael Shipp and Nicholas Harrison. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Shipp and her brother, Bobby Gene Stephens.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 25, 2003 at Olympus Cemetery. Visitation will be at 6 p.m., Thursday at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral home in Grove.
