BLANCHE ELIZABETH McPHETRIDGE CLAYBORN SHIRA
GROVE, Okla. - Blanche Elizabeth McPhetridge Clayborn Shira, 85, of Grove, passed away Tuesday morning, May 27, 2003 at the Grand Lake Villa after a long illness.
Mrs. Shira was born August 26, 1913 around the Charleston, Ark., area to Enoch and Laura Jane Danewood McPhetridge. After completing her high school education, she attended Labette County Jr. College, succeeding in the courses of baking and dietary. On September 19, 1931, she married Wilborn Vane Clayborn. From their union came three sons. Wilborn preceded her in death on March 12, 1949. Later in years, Blanche was remarried to Elmer Shira on May 8, 1982. After 16 years together, Elmer preceded her in death on October 14, 1998. Mrs. Shira was employed by the H.D. Lee Garment Factory in Chetopa, Kan. She also worked as a cook for the Chetopa School system and took great pride in preparing meals for the young children. Mrs. Shira was an avid homemaker and known by many for her ability to cook. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chetopa.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and one son, Jerry Conrad Clayborn of Chetopa, on August 28, 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn Clayborn of Welch, Okla. and Wayne Clayborn of Grove; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
There will be a visitation for family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 30, at the Thomas Funeral Home, Welch.
Services for Mrs. Shira will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31, at the Thomas Funeral Home. Pastor Wayne Shaw of Grove will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Ronald, Randall, Trevor and Jeff Clayborn and Terry Stroggins and Darren Wilson. Interment will be at Oakhill Cemetery, Chetopa.
Services are under the direction of the Thomas Funeral Home.

OOALA LONG SHOCKLEY
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Ooala Long Shockley, 71, of Pittsburg, died at 12 a.m., December 1, 2003, at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
She was born September 29, 1932, at Fairland, Okla., to Charles T. and Juanita (Houk) Long. She attended school at Fairland and Cascade Locks, Oregon Schools, graduating from Cascade Locks High School
Mrs. Shockley was a nurse's aide. She worked for several nursing homes during her career. She moved to Pittsburg in January of 2003, from Camas, Wash., to be near her daughter.
She was united in marriage to Junior Lee "Pete" Shockley on November 6, 1956.
Mrs. Shockley was a member of AARP.
Survivors include three sons, Don Shockley of The Dalles, Ore., John Shockley of Oxford, Kan. and Douglas Shockley of Bentonville, Ark.; a daughter JoAnn Lanning of Pittsburg; sixteen grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles B. Long of White Salmon, Wash. and James N. Long of Trail, Ore.; two sisters, Arawana Riley of Neosho, Mo. and Lela "Jackie" Abernathy of Washougal, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, December 5 at the Old Hickory Grove Cemetery northwest of Grove, Okla.
Friends are requested to gather at the cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762.

IRENE FRANCIS (SHARRY) SIMPSON
GROVE, Okla. - Irene Francis (Sharry) Simpson, 77, of Grove passed from this life on Saturday, May 24, 2003. She was born September 7, 1925 to James Madison Sharry and Chloe (Millwee) Sharry near Carnegie. Mrs. Simpson was raised in Eakly and graduated from high school in 1944. She attended college at Southwestern College in Weatherford before marrying Ernest Simpson on September 12, 1945 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The couple resided in California from 1945-51 where Irene was housewife and mother. She returned to Alfalfa, Okla., moved to Oklahoma City and then to Ft. Cobb, Okla., Ogden, Utah, and finally Noble, Okla., where she retired in 1985. Since that time, she and her husband have enjoyed traveling and resided in Checotah, Okla. before moving to Grove in 1998.
Mrs. Simpson is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ernest M. Simpson of Grove; her son, Galen P. Simpson and wife, Lori (Roberts) Simpson of Roy, Utah; her daughters, Marcia K. (Simpson) Shoemaker of Tecumseh, Okla. and Dee (Simpson) Lawson of Grove; five brothers, Cecil Sharry and wife, Flois of Fresno, Calif., Walter Sharry and wife, Belle of Lufkin, Texas, Willard Sharry and wife, Dortha of Oklahoma City, Robert Sharry and wife, Tommie Ann of Moore, Okla., Kenneth Sharry and wife, Liz of Nicoma Park, Okla.; one sister, Betty (Sharry) Johnson and husband, Gerald of Bakersfield; eight grandchildren, Nancy (Simpson) Murray of Shawnee, Okla., Torsten (Simpson) Wegner and Patrick Simpson of Layton, Utah, Mardee and John Shoemaker of Tecumseh, Lara Lawson of Tulsa, Jeff Lawson and Julie Jordan of Canton, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers-in-law, John A. Simpson and Charles M. Simpson; her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Wann (Simpson) Payne and Norma (Simpson) Hamilton; and her son-in-law, Phil Lawson.
The family has suggested memorials to the Grove Christian HELP Center, P.O. Box 40387, Grove, OK 74345.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Primrose Chapel. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m., at Alfalfa Cemetery under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service,

JENNIE SIXKILLER
JAY, Okla. - Jennie Sixkiller, 94, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Grove Nursing Center.
Jennie Sixkiller was born on April 9, 1909 in Chanute, Kan. to Silas T. and Loutechia (Schoonover) Allspaugh. She was the last of nine children. She married Robert Milo Sixkiller on July 17, 1926. He preceded her in death on July 13, 1998. She was a member of Jay Bible Church.
Survivors include four children Lewis Monroe Sixkiller of Eucha, Hazel Riggs of Jay, Clarence Clark Sixkiller and his wife Sandra of Jay, Glenn Eugene Sixkiller and his wife Carol of Dayton, Md.; twelve grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant daughter Ruby Sixkiller.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Jay Bible Church with Dolphus Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at Eucha Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, Okla.

THELMA A. SIXKILLER
GROVE - Thelma Sixkiller, age 87, of Grove, died Sunday, January 26, 2003 in the Betty Ann Nursing home. The daughter of Odie and Myra Miller, she was born on September 14, 1915 in Glennville, W. Va. She moved to Grove with her husband in 1980 from Tulsa, Okla. Her husband, Garner Sixkiller, preceded her in death in 2001. Also preceding her in death was a grandson, Thomas Payne, Jr.
She is survived by: a daughter, Laura Fay Payne and husband, Thomas, in Tulsa; and two grandchildren, Carolyn Vanarsdel and Michael Payne. No services are planned. Local arrangements are by the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove.GROVE, Okla - Lee E. Smith, 77, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, at Olympus Cemetery with Ralph Davis officiating.

MARY MELBA SLAYTON
Melba was born October 18, 1931 to Grace and Ross Morrow in Topsy, Okla. Melba went to be with the Lord July 7, 2003.
Melba lived in the Disney, Okla. area her entire life. Melba worked in the business office at the Jay Hospital until the hospital's closing. Upon the hospital closing, Melba worked for Indian Health Service in Claremore for two years. She then worked for the Sam Hider Jay Clinic in contract health until her illness resulted in her leaving the Clinic. During Melba's years of employment she acquired and helped many friends along the way.
melba had two children that she loved very much; Mike Gregory of Tulsa, Okla. and Lisa Slayton of Disney. Melba also leaves behind four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two brothers, Roy Morrow of Topsy and Ralph Morrow of Roff, Okla. She also leaves behind many dear and close friends and family. Melba was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Grace Morrow and three brothers.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 10 at Disney Assembly of God. Interment will follow at Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay. Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay.

SHERMAN WESLEY SLY, SR.
Sherman Wesley Sly, Sr., of Fairland died Friday evening at the Integris Baptist Regional Health Center after a short illness. He was 82.
Mr. Sly was born to Clarence and Florence (Crabtree) Sly on February 27, 1921 at Yonkers, Oklahoma. Mr. Sly moved to Fairland in 1946. He was retired from the B.F. Goodrich Company as a tire builder. He graduated from the Locust Grove High School in 1939.
Mr. Sly was a member of the Floyd Wallen American Legion Post of Fairland and Ex POW of Northeast Oklahoma. He was also a veteran of World War II serving as a Tech Sgt. in the Army Air Corp. Mr. Sly spent 19 months as a prisoner of war and also received the Bronze Star for Valor.
He married Wandy B. Goff on June 21, 1945 in Miami, Oklahoma; she preceded him in death on February 25, 1996. Survivors include: a daughter Beth D. Sly, Granby MO; and two sons, Mark A. Sly, Wichita, Kansas and Sherman “Pete” Sly of Fairland; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday at the First Baptist Church of Fairland. Burial followed in the Fairland Cemetery under the direction of the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home.
Members of the Floyd L. Perry American Legion Post of Miami and the Floyd Wallen American Legion Post of Fairland conducted graveside military rites.

CLYDE L. SMITH
FT. SMITH, Ark. - Clyde L. Smith, 88, of Ft. Smith died September 25, 2003.
Clyde was a retired radar technician for the Federal Aviation Administration.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma L. Smith and one daughter, Sandra Andrews.
He is survived by one son, Sid Connor of Ft. Smith, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 27, at 3 p.m., at St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Following the memorial service, the family will visit with friends at the family home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Edward Hospice, 7301 Rogers, Ft. Smith, AR 72903 or U. of A., Ft. Smith, P.O. Box 3649, Ft. Smith, AR 72913.
Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home, Ft. Smith.

CRYSTAL DELORES SMITH
Graveside services for Crystal Delores Smith, 64, locust Grove, Okla. were held Saturday, September 6, 2003 at Sandridge Cemetery near Claremore, Okla. The Reverend Amos Glover officiated. Services were under the direction of Key Funeral Home of Locust Grove, Okla.
Mrs. Smith was born May 24, 1939 in Vera, Okla. died at her home in Locust Grove, Okla. on September 3, 2003 with her family at her bedside.
She grew up an attended school in Vera, Okla. graduating from Vera high school with the class of 1957. After finishing school, she and Robert Smith were married a few years later in Collinsville, Okla. They made their home in Collinsville until moving to Locust Grove, Okla. in 1970. Mrs. Smith worked for several years at the scout camp near Locust Grove as a cook and later she began working at the Pryor Elks Lodge as a cook, a job that would last some 17 years. She retired about 2 years ago to spend more time with her family. She was a Christian and loved hearing the word of the Lord at Amazing Grace Tabernacle, where she held her membership[ for a number of years. In her spare time she enjoyed going to flea markets, auctions, and garage sales. She and her husband, Robert, also enjoyed fishing when they could find the time. She was a very special and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all. She always put others first and was willing to help anyone in need. She will be greatly missed by all that shared in her life.
Survivors include her mother, Lora Gosvener of Oolagah, Okla., her husband, Robert Smith of the home; a daughter, Deborah Hutto and husband William of Locust Grove; two sons, James Smith and wife Pam of Salina, Okla. and Michael Smith of Locust Grove. Four brothers, Douglas Gosvener and wife Mindy of Vera, Okla., Jessie Gosvener and wife Susie of Pawhuska, Okla., George Gosvener and wife Sharon of Valiant, Okla., and Eddie Gosvener of Oolagah, Okla. Three sisters, Rita Hehman and husband Robert of Terisita, Okla., Linda Goforth of Davis, Okla., and Pat Mefford and husband Bill of Talala, Okla. Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her father, grandparents, and a sister preceded her in death.

JEANE FRANCIS SMITH
GROVE, Okla. - Jeane Francis Smith, 85, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo., after an accidental fire at her granddaughter's home in Alba, Mo.
Jeane Smith was born on April 21, 1918 in Clarksburg, W. Va., to Clint and Christine (Martin) Dawson. She married Dallas Reid Smith. He preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Smith was an LPN for 37 years before her retirement in 1980 She had lived in Grove since 1948, moving from Bristow, Okla.
Survivors include one daughter Barbara K. Pitts; one sister Zella Baker; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson Cody L. Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son Jerry H. Bledsoe and one great-grandson Jason R. Pitts.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, December 22, at Council House Church with Rev. Larry Pickard officiating. Burial will follow at Council House Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove.
