WALTER LEE MANNING
1916-2005
SOUTHWEST CITY, Mo. - Walter Lee Manning was born August 15, 1916 to Charles Preston Manning and Lydia (Lancaster) Manning. He passed from this earth on March 15, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Oneeta (Youngs) Manning; three sons; Gary Lynn Manning, Galen Lee Manning, and David Layne Manning; along with their wives: Diane, Barbie, and De Manning; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as one brother, Rex Manning, one sister, Madge McGrew and a niece, Glenna Barnes, who was raised as a sister following the death of her mother, Geraldine. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters: Geraldine Robinson, Hazel Smith, Nell Nichols, and twin infant sisters, Shirley and Shelly Manning.
Walter grew up during difficult times when horses and buggies were commonplace and hard physical work was the rule. During World War II, he proudly served his country as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Force, European theater. Following the war, he returned home and married Oneeta Youngs on January 29, 1948. He then resumed farming on land he purchased on Carr Branch, Cowskin Prairie. In 1957, Walter and Oneeta returned to the family farm on Elk River which had been previously owned by his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Six generations of the Manning Family have now lived on that acreage which is listed as a 'Centennial Farm' by the State of Missouri.
Walter’s first love was always farming, but he was also employed for several years as a machinist at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS. During the 1960s, he milled parts for the Saturn V booster rocket that carried the first astronaut to the moon. Walter concentrated on farming for the balance of his life and remained closely involved after he transferred the operation to his sons in the early 90s.
Walter has always been known throughout the community as a great historian with detailed stories from times past. Some of that history has been preserved in various newspaper articles and recordings, but sadly, a wonderful storyteller with a remarkable memory is gone.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the Full Gospel Church, Southwest City, Missouri, with the Rev. Jeff Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the Manning Family Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Ellis Family Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma.
