KAREN SUE NICHOLS
1948-2005
MIAMI, Okla. – Karen Sue Nichols, 57, of Miami, passed away Saturday, December 24, at Integris Baptist Regional Hospital in Miami. Karen was born on July 26, 1948, in Miami to James and LaWanda (Stafford) Frost.
Karen was a registered nurse and loved collecting antiques, making arts and crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.
Karen is survived by: her children, David and Kim Bowen of Vinita, Shawn Altebaumer of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sherry McCall of Carl Junction, Mo., Becky Nichols of Joplin, Mo.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Dick Frost of Moore, Okla., and Phillip Frost of League City, Texas; and a host of friends. Karen was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by a very special aunt, Shirley Nelson, of Miami.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, at 10 a.m., at the Craig County Baptist Church with Pastor Claud Strong officiating. Serving as casketbearers will be Jim Nichols, Zachary McCall, Steve Nelson, Chris Bowen, Brian Mayer, Dick Frost and Phillip Dodd. Burial is to follow at William’s Timberhill Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.

TOMMYE PHILIPPI
1910-2005
GROVE, Okla. - Tommye Philippi, 95-year-old Grove, Oklahoma resident, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2005 at Integris Grove General Hospital.
Tommye was born August 19, 1910 in Crocket County, Tennessee to William Allen Shelton and Biddie Ann Francis (Brassfield) Shelton. Tommye owned and operated the Cheyenne Beauty Shop in Tulsa, OK.
Tommye was united in marriage to Floyd Philippi in June of 1962. They moved to the Grove area in 1975 from Tulsa. Floyd preceded her in death on June 14, 1990.
Surviving family members include: three daughters; Donna Burt of Phoenix, AZ., Helen Davis of Mesa, AZ., Evalyn Jo Ranciglio of Redlands, CA., one sister; Lessie Robertson of Grove, OK., nieces; Sandy Rohde of Grove, OK. and Patricia Kilby of Grove, OK., great nieces; Tami Stine of Romah, CO., Jennifer Cofer of Colorado Springs, CO., great nephew; Mark Rohde of Claremore, OK., sixteen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 2, 2005 at the Church of Christ in Grove, OK. Pastor Doug Rainbolt will officiate. A second service will be held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2005 at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Tulsa, OK. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 1, 2005 at the Turner Funeral Chapel in Grove, OK.
Services are entrusted to Turner Funeral Chapel of Grove, OK.

VAUGHN LEE SHAMBURG
1937-2005
GROVE, Okla. - Vaughn Lee Shamburg, 68 year old Grove, Oklahoma resident, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2005 at his home following an extended illness.
Vaughn was born February 25, 1937 in Beloit, Kansas to Harold and Minnie (Taylor) Shamburg. He attended and graduated from K-State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Vaughn served in the Army reserve. He worked as an Architectural Engineer and was a building contractor, building homes around the Grand lake area for the last 28 years.
Vaughn was united in marriage to Nancy Ileen Thomas on June 29, 1974 in Topeka, Kansas. They moved to the Grove area in 1978 from Topeka and are members of the Cornerstone Church.
Surviving family members include: his wife; Nancy of the home, one daughter; Chris Diane Fecher and husband Greg of Orlando, FL, two sons; Steven Leroy Shamburg and wife Debbie of Winfield, KS, Greg Lewis Shamburg and wife Kathi of Enid, OK, two brothers; Keith Shamburg and wife Dorinda of Beloit, KS, Ed Shamburg and wife Barb of Topeka, KS, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 1, 2006 at the Cornerstone Church in Grove. Pastor Bill Lay will officiate. A meal and visitation time will follow immediately after the service at the Vaughn home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cornerstone Church Benevolence Fund or to the Building Fund.

BETTY ANN MERRILL MAGNER SHRUM
1932-2006
JOPLIN, Mo. – Betty Ann Merrill Magner Shrum, age 73, of Orange Park, Fla., passed away at Freeman Hospital West at 11:34 a.m., Thursday, January 5, from injuries she received in a three-car automobile accident on Tuesday, January 3, on Highway 59/10, near Grove, Okla.
Born December 1, 1932, in McCune, Kan., she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Merrill and Anna Elva Porter Merrill, and had lived in Florida the past six months. She was raised on a farm near Galesburg, Kan., and graduated from Galesburg High School. She lived in the Oklahoma City, Okla., area for 25 years. She graduated from Tri-County Vo-Tech in Bartlesville, Okla., and was a Licensed Practical Nurse for 37 years. She was a Methodist.
Survivors include: two sons, Mitchel Magner and wife Dorothy of Shawnee, Kan., and Jeffrey Brian Shrum and wife Tammie of Jay, Okla.; two daughters, Marcia Word and husband Ronald of Orange Park and Debra Pollock and husband Stanley of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, James Merrill of Parsons, Kan., and John Merrill and wife Martha of Newnan, Ga.; and, eight grandchildren.
A brother, Charles J. Merrill, preceded her in death.
The body will be cremated under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Graveside memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 11, at McCune Cemetery in McCune, Kan., with Todd Word officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

EVELYN J. SMITH
1939-2006
JAY - Evelyn J. Smith, 66, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla.
Evelyn J. Smith was born December 15, 1939 at Kansas City, Kan., to Rolly R. Riley and Mertie J. (Battin) Riley. Her family moved to Carl Junction, Mo., when she was quite young and she resided there until 1991, when she moved to Jay. Evelyn attended the Jay First Baptist Church and did housekeeping for families in the area. She loved music and enjoyed playing the organ and singing. Evelyn liked needlework, walks and just being outdoors.
Survivors include her sister, Gloria Sloan, of Jay, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Raymond Riley.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, January 6, at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, with interment in the Carl Junction Cemetery, Carl Junction, Mo., under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay.

HOLLAND B. SMITH
1918-2005
MIAMI, Okla. – Holland B. Smith, 87, of Miami, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at St. John ‘s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.
Born November 28, 1918, Smith was a retired grocery store clerk.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami.

CODY TULLY
1987-2005
GROVE – Cody Tully, 18, the son of Mark and Vickie Brehmer, was born January 14, 1987, in Amarillo, Texas, and died December 23, 2005 as the result of an automobile accident.
Cody was a 2005 graduate of Grove High School where he was a member of the football, wrestling and track teams. Cody was attending Northeastern A & M College, Miami, Okla., where he was recruited to play football.
Survivors include: his guardians, Mark and Vickie Brehmer, of Grove; a brother, Timothy Tully, of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; a sister, Melissa Tully of Grove; and a step-brother, Jason Brehmer of Grove. A maternal grandmother, Naomi Meese of Amarillo, Texas, also survives him. His natural parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Cornerstone Church in Grove. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 27, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, 711 S. Main, Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cody Tully Fund in care of the funeral home.

JASON “JJ” JAY TURNBOUGH
1985-2005
VINITA, Okla. - Jason “JJ” Jay Turnbough, 20 of Vinita passed away Monday, December 26, 2005. JJ was born on May 24, 1985 in Clovis, New Mexico to Jessie L. and Fonda L. (Taylor) Turnbough.
JJ attended Thunderbird Youth Academy. He love to sing and listen to Rap Music and Gospel Music. He also loved going fishing when he was younger. JJ always wanted to be more like his brother, his Dad Jess, and his father Shawn when it comes to working on things. He always wanted to fit in. His best way was through laughter, he was the comedian of the family. He needed a place to call home. Now he is gone home to be with his Grandma Alison, his Aunt Sissy, Uncle Dee and Grandpa Johnny. As his mother I know his last words would be “Peace Out.”
JJ leaves as surviving his mother Fonda Docherty and husband Shawn of Vinita. Father Jessie Turnbough of Vinita. Brother Jessie L. Turnbough, Jr. Sister; Tiffany Turnbough. Companion Misty Norman. Paternal grandparents; Dorothy Watford of Neosho. Eugene Taylor of Abilene, TX., Maternal Grandparents: Conley Turnbough of Vinita, Bob and Charlotte Morgan of Ketchum, and Thomas Docherty. Aunts; Joy Wilson, Djuana Hayes, Marilyn Turnbough, Kayleen Turnbough, Janet Smith and Michelle Delibro. Uncles; Randy Taylor, Sonny Taylor, Bobby Taylor, Conway Turnbough, Donny Turnbough and Wayne Delibro, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
The family will gather at Burckhalter Funeral Home on Wednesday evening to receive family and friends from 6 to 7 p.m.
A celebration of JJ’s life will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Burckhalter Funeral Home Chapel with Freddie Griffin officiating. Serving as casket bearers will be Jesse Turnbough, Jr., Danny Peetom, Michael Hatfield, Donavon Downing, Justin Daughtery and Shaun Landers. Burial is to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.

RUTH H. WALKER
1919-2005
MIAMI, Okla. - Ruth H. Walker of Miami died at 7:05 a.m., Saturday at the Eastwood Manor Nursing Center, Commerce after a long illness. She was 86.
Mrs. Walker was born October 21, 1919 to the late Hiram Rufus and Sarah Emma (Gordon) McBee and lived in the Miami area most all of her life. She had graduated from the Miami High School with the class of 1937.
She had managed the former Tastee-Freeze Drive-In for 5 years and had worked in the kitchen at the Integris Baptist Regional Health Center. She later retired from the Crown Furniture Company in Miami.
She was a member of the Miami Indian Tribe and a member of the Bethany Christian Church of Miami.
She married Lewis Robert “Bob” Walker on January 18, 1940 at Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1968.
Survivors include a daughter Susan Jones of Miami; a son Lewis Robert Walker of North Miami; two sisters, Winona Weir and Imogene Marshall both of Miami; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Barker officiating. Burial will follow in the Walker Cemetery west of Welch, Oklahoma under the direction of the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home of Miami. Pallbearers will be Jerry James, Nathan Jones, Brett Hayes, Dustin Hayes, Bob Walker, and Ronnie Walker.
The family will receive friends at the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2005.
