Gooden

Clifton Gooden, 86, died Thursday at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. Graveside services were held today at Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis with the Rev. Odis Babers officiating. Services are under the direction of Patterson Greer Funeral Home in Hollis.

She was born June 25, 1913 in Rust County, Texas. He moved to Hollis in 1995 from Borger, Texas. She resided at Colonial Manor II Nursing Home.

Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Woodard, Ruth L. Gooden and Bennie Gooden and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and a sister.

Hatter

Mary Leon Hatter, 88, Granite, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the Willow Baptist Church with the Revs. Arol Steverson and Jim Flynn officiating. Burial will follow at Brinkman Cemetery under the direction of Hackney-Gish Funeral Home of Hobart.

Hatter was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Willow, to Edward S. and Elizabeth (Sudduth) Wright. She married Herbert Lee Hatter on Dec. 10, 1927, in Mangum. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1986.

She was a member of the Willow Baptist Church and had retired as a cashier for many years. She had lived in Greer County all her life, except for the years from 1955 until 1974, when she lived and worked in Snyder, Texas, with her husband and two youngest sons.

Hatter was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son, Earl D. Hatter.

Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Jo and Ernest Babek, Granite; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Don Hatter of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and his friend Virginia Grewatz; Carroll and Patricia Hatter of Clovis, N.M. and Travis and Helen Hatter of Snyder, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Wilma Hatter of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Annie Carter of Altus; 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Hayes

Frederick Eugene Hayes, son of R.R. and Fannie (Craig) Hayes, was born Sept. 8, 1911, at Exeter, Calif. He died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Okeene Hospital at the age of 88.

Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. today at the Seiling Church of Christ with Mike Marsalis officiating. Interment will follow at Munice Cemetery, southeast of Seiling, under the direction of Redinger Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the Munice Cemetery Fund or to the Area Medical Foundation with the funeral home serving as custodian of the funds.

Hayes was known as "Gene" to his family and friends and was raised in California, where he graduated from Pacific Christian Academy in Graton, Calif. He furthered his education at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.

He was married to Bertha G. Benson on Feb. 18, 1933, at Clinton. They established their home on the Benson family homestead southeast of Seiling where they raised their two children, Don and Sandra.

He remained an active minister of the Church of Christ for many years until his retirement in 1997. He had served many congregations over the years.

In 1967, he was one of the founders of the Seiling Church of Christ where he served in many capacities. He was a supporter of York Christian College, Harding University and Lubbock Children's Home as well as the mission work in Zambia, Africa.

He was recognized by Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond as proclaimer of the gospel for more than 50 years. In 1997, he received a certificate of membership into the Cowboy Storytellers Association of the Western Plains. He was also inducted into the Dewey County Historical Society Hall of Fame.

Hayes was not only a minister but a very active Dewey County farmer and rancher. He enjoyed his livestock and the land.

Survivors include: his wife of 67 years, Bertha Hayes; one son, Don and his wife Sherry of Altus; one daughter, Sandra Johnson and her husband Loren Lynn of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Scott and Lyle Hayes and Kathy McNiel; six great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Hayes was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four brothers.

Helm

Arlen Dewitt Helm, 73, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, in Altus. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Lone Oak Baptist Church with Boyd Whitehead and Stan Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Services.

Helm was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Shamrock, to Leslor and Fred Henry Helm. He moved with his parents to Roger Mills County and attended Rose Hill School before graduating from Berlin High School in 1945.

He entered the Army and served his country during World War II. He was discharged in 1948, but reenlisted in 1950 and began a career in the Air Force, serving during the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict.

He was stationed in Texas and California, as well as North Africa, Japan and England, until his retirement in 1970.

He continued in civil service at Altus Air Force Base from 1971 until 1972, tthe defense reutilization and marketing office at Altus and Fort Sill from 1973 until 1989. He retired in February of 1989 as a property disposal specialist.

He was married to Hattie Marie (Baldwin) Helm in Sayre on Sept. 15, 1952, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Helm was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include: his wife, Hattie Helm; one son, John Helm and his wife Phyllis of Snyder; two grandson, Ricky Belcher of Hobart and David Belcher of Wichita Falls, Texas; 12 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and many other relatives and friends.

Hill

Kenneth W. Hill, 60, Rogers, Ark., died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Washington Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark. Funeral services are set for Saturday at Southside Church of Christ with Jackie Chesnutt officiating. Interment will follow at Rogers Cemetery. Visitation is set from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Rollins Funeral Home in Rogers.

Hill was born April 1, 1940, in Lawton, to Henry Hill and Marie Lusk Hill.

He retired, after 20 years in the Army, and moved to Rogers in 1981, from Hawaii. He then worked at Rogers Aviation and the city of Rogers until his retirement in March of 1996. He attended Southside Church of Christ and enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

He survived by his wife of 36 years, June Hill, of the home; two sons, Lance Hill of Pea Ridge and Brian Hill of Bella Vista, Ark.; his mother, Marie Hill of Lawton and one sister, Mary Ann McGee, also of Lawton.

Hogg

Luda E. Hogg, 98, a long time Granite resident, died Saturday at Mangum City Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Lake Creek Baptist Church with C.R. Tucker and Alvin Funkhouser officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Cemetery, Granite. Arrangements are under the direction of Peoples Cooperative Funeral Home, Lone Wolf.

She was born June 5, 1902 in Sunset, Texas to John Thomas and Lucretia (Thompson) Darby. She attended school at Pleasant Valley and Lake Creek. She married Leslie Earl Hogg in Granite June 28, 1919. He died Oct. 31, 1978. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lake Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Lucretia Darby, her husband of 59 years, Leslie; a twin sister, Lola Darby; sisters Bonnie Darby and Gladys Garlington.

Survivors include three sons, Marvin (Jack) Hogg, Robert Hogg and wife Jessie and Dwight Hogg and wife, Peggy all of Granite; a daughters, Opal Norman and husband, Curt of Granite; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Johnson

Vera Mae Johnson, 87, died Sunday at Mangum City Hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greer Funeral Home Chapel in Mangum. Officiating will be the Rev. Sam Studer.

She was born July 2, 1912 in Winnsboro, Texas to James Harrison and Ginnie Estilla (Lindley) Shearer. She moved to Mangum in 1945. She married T. Josh Johnson June 13, 1952 in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death. She worked for Diamond A. Cannerry in Junction City, Oregon in the summers during canning season. She was affiliated with Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Billie Roe, a daughter, Dorothy Beal, two brothers, Louis Shearer and Ester Shearer.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosie Mae Tipton of Mangum, Bernice J. Channell of Modasto, Calif. and a son, James H. Johnson of Hobbs, N.M.; 14 grandchildren, Virginia Sampson, Betty Bradrick, Lillie White, Bill McNutt, Tony, McNutt, Tommy McNutt, David McNutt, Billie Johnson, Vickie Fowler, Don Channell, Sandra Olson, George Channell, Debbie Sisler, Vickie Herrera; four step-grandchildren, Wesley Tipton, Melisa Tipton, Melinda Thurman , David Tipton and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Kastner

Jo Etta Kastner, 92, Altus, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kincannon Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Maxey officiating. Burial will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

Kastner was born July 21, 1907, in Cominto, Ark., to W.T. and Mary Johnson Avant. She attended school in Hot Springs, Ark.

She married Fred Kastner on July 15, 1923, in Hot Springs. They moved to the Altus area in 1927. She had been an LPN on the obstetrics ward of Jackson County Memorial Hospital from 1950 until her retirement in 1974.

She was a member of the Oklahoma LPN Association from 1950 until 1974. Her hobbies included volunteer work, ceramics, painting, crochet and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1978; six sisters, Stella and Della Avant, Ida Lee Hunter, Peggy Seate, Ida Lee Knight; two brothers, George and Woodrow Avant and a son-in-law, Mickey Purcell.

Survivors include: a daughter, Billy Jean Purcell of Davenport, Iowa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Velma Kastner of Muskogee, Charles and Trula Kastner of Altus; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Kincannon

Caroline Wilson Kincannon, formerly of Olustee, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Spanish Cove Health Center in Yukon.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, D.C.

She is survived by one brother, Art Connor, of New Hampshire; one son, Art Kincannon of Midwest City; two granddaughters, Tracey Johnson and her husband Todd of Oklahoma City, Christy Kincannon of San Jose, Calif. and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service has been set for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Church of the Savior, 2750 N. Mustang, Yukon.

Knighton

Alberta Knighton, 74, died Wednesday in Altus. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. John's Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Bostic officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus Cemetery under they direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

She was born Jan. 6, 1926 at Anderson, S.C. to Calvin and Eula Mae (Sherrard) Jones. She was a resident of Altus and Jackson County since 1955. She worked at Altus Air Force Base as a food service manager until her retirement. She was a member of the St. John's Baptist Church, where she served on several Auxiliaries including the Usher Board and Womens Mission.

Survivors include a son, Melvin Knighton of Amarillo, Texas; a brother, Ralph Jones, Apolachicola, Fla.; sister-in-law, Ollie Hart and husband David; special friends, Hollis and Annette Atkinson of Altus; three nieces; two nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers George, Calvin and Isaac Jones, and a sister Essie Mae Garrison.
