Roy Lee Rettmann
A memorial service for Roy Lee Rettmann will be at 4 p.m. Friday, at Community Bible Church, Central Point. Pastor Pete Slusher will officiate. Inurnment will be at Scenic Hills, Ashland.

Mr. Rettmann, 76, of Central Point, died Wednesday, (Oct. 27, 2004) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Bible Church fund.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1928 in Fredrick, OK to Henry and Velva (Bush) Rettmann. On Oct. 25, 2003 in Denver, CO he married Charlotte Hourigan who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in the 1940's from Arkansas.

Mr. Rettmann worked as a residential/ commercial contractor.

He was a member of the Community Bible Church in Central Point.

In addition to his wife survivors include; his children, David of Hornbrook, CA, Robert of Denver, CO, Patricia Greeley of Medford, Kenneth of Butte Falls, Renee Neal of Seattle, WA, Roy L, of Pendleton, and Richard of Medford; step-children, Tanya Lewis of Phoenix, and Paul Harper of Central Point; a sister, Elaine Hoadley of Phoenix; two brothers, Allen Rettman of Central Point, and Charlie Rettmann of Grants Pass; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris, Central Point.

Walter L. Sewell Sr.
A time of remembrance and celebration of Walt Sewell's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 30, at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Walt was born in Chico CA on July 13, 1913 and passed on October 20, 2004 in Gold Beach Or. He is survived by his wife Mildred; sister Thelma (Bill); sons Lonnie (Andrea) and Brian (Linda); stepchildren Darrel, Darwin (Judi) Davis, Dorothy (Russ); eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and six great-step-grandchildren. Walt was preceded in death by his first wife Kathryn, his parents, Maud and Leo, brother Arlie sister Gay and mother and father-in-law Etta & Ed Crowe.

Donations can be made to any children's fund.

Harry A. Laatsch
Harry Albert Laatsch, 96, (May 27, 08) of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 2004) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center. Arrangements; Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Jean M. Zarka, 74, of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct. 27, 2004) at Providence Medford Medical Center. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Arthur B. Drescher
Arthur B. Drescher, 93, of Medford, Oregon, died Saturday, October 23, 2004, at his home in Medford. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation, Providence Hospice, or a favorite charity.

He was born August 31, 1911, in Princeton, Minnesota, to William G. and Lillian Drescher. In 1941, he married Carolyn Heising, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989. Since retirement, they had also lived in the Grass Valley and Los Osos areas in California.

He received a BS in geology, cum laude, from South Dakota School of Mines, and an MS in geology from California Institute of Technology. He also completed further work toward a PhD while a teaching fellow at Caltech.

He worked for Texas Power and Light Company, which was considering the possibility of creating a wartime defense plant to make iron and steel from low-grade East Texas ores. The defense plant, which became Lone Star Steel Company, was approved and, as it grew, he was responsible for many phases in its development. Over a period of 17 years, he worked as geologist, director of the pilot mill and laboratory, mining engineer, chief engineer for mining and exploration, and, in his final 8 years with the company, as ore and coal division superintendent. He holds a patent on a device for magnetic separation of roasted iron ore that he developed while working for Lone Star.

He also worked for Shell Oil Company as a petroleum geologist in California, for Union Pacific Railroad Company's oil and mineral development department as manager of the Laramie district office, and for Bear Creek Mining Company as exploration geologist in the southwestern U.S. His final fifteen years of professional employment were with Homestake Mining Company as chief exploration geologist in America and Australia.

An important interest in his life was paleontology. He was a collector and preparator for the South Dakota School of Mines museum and chief of fossil collecting parties for Caltech. He published several papers in paleontology and has a plesiosaur named in his honor.

He was a 65-year member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and a member of the American Society of Petroleum Geologists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, the Society of Economic Geologists, and the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

In the course of his career, he had traveled extensively in many countries including Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and fishing, as well as mineral collecting, in the many places he has lived. Since retiring, he had enjoyed landscaping the various homes they have lived in with waterfalls, pools, etc. Some of his other interests, besides paleontology, have been lapidary work, and more recently, computer applications. He has built bluebird houses in the various places they have lived since retirement to help mitigate habitat depletion.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Carolyn, include a daughter, Jean, Silver City, New Mexico; a son, Ted, Golden, Colorado; a sister, Margaret Slater, Richland, Washington; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Rubye Peene and Jerry Rowlett.

Betty Ann Sweem
Betty Ann Sweem went to be with her Lord on Sunday, October 24, at 5:18 a.m. Her struggle with cancer was a testament of her faith in God.

She was born on April 6, 1939, to Hoyle and Verna (Williams) Medford, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. She grew up in Phoenix and graduated from Phoenix High in 1957. She married Larry Sweem in Ashland in 1959. Betty earned her B.S. in Education from Oregon State University in 1962. She taught for a year at Lone Pine Elementary School before children Rebecca (Becky) and David were born in 1965 and 1966.

The family resided in Shady Cove since 1971. Betty worked as a part-time substitute teacher and library specialist in the Eagle Point School District.

Betty's interests included spending time with her children, grandchildren, and many outdoor pursuits.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Linda Roderick. She is survived by her husband, Larry; her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Scott Gratsinger of Hillsboro, Oregon; her son and daughter in-law, David and Michelle Sweem; and their three daughters Kiana, Kristin, and Callie Sweem of Trail, Oregon.

A memorial service will be held at First Church of the Nazarene in Medford, Oregon on Saturday, October 30, 2004, at 1 p.m.

Donations can be sent to the Medford First Church of the Nazarene, 1974 E. McAndrews, Medford 97504, specifying "Building Improvement Project."

Cleve K. Shafer
Mr. Shafer was born on Nov. 28, 1946 in Prospect, a son of Everett and Florence Shafer.

Prospect, Oregon gave him his start, and a good one it was. He loved God and his country, his family, his friends, Jack Russells, kitties, and his best friend, Jesus.

Cleve served in Vietnam and Timber Products and survived it all with humor and friends who now serve him well.

He is waiting for his wife Roxi and his beloved boys, Rex Shafer of Corvallis, Rod Shafer of Salem, Kenneth Thompson of Medford, and Bill Thompson of Central Point, and any friends and family who wish to join him.

He had a grandpa's license many times over and knew just what it took. Fishin' poles, unconditional love, hugs and laughter.

Mr. Shafer, 57, of Sams Valley, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 2004) at his home with his loving wife at his side.

A service for Cleve K. Shafer will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 4, at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

Eileen M. Rasmussen
Eileen M. Rasmussen, age 85 died Tuesday (October 26, 2004) in Mcdford.

She was born on April 21, 1919 in Noonan, North Dakota to Carl 0. and Anna A. (Wick) Nylander. She was married to Evan Rasmussen. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1943.

Eileen and her husband Evan were charter founding members of the First Assembly of God in Medford. She was a leader in the Women's group with the church. She was involved with home extension.

After the death of her husband she worked as a Grief Counselor with the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband Evan, a son, Lorin Jay Rasmussen; two brothers, Sylvan and Wallace Nylander. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Rickert of Portland, OR.; brothers, Ralph Nylander of Moorpark, CA. Morris Nylander of Blaine, WA.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday October 30, 2004 at l p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, located at, 1108 West Main Street, with Graveside service to follow at 2 p.m. at the Siskiyou Memorial Park, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Assembly of God Church, 1108 West Main Street Medford, Oregon 97504.

James Mark Anders
James Mark Anders, 84, of Hendersonville, NC, died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Pardee Care Center.

He was a native of Henderson County and had lived in Medford, OR 35 years prior to moving to Hendersonville.

He was a son of the late Rafe L. Anders and Rose Heaton Anders. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rafe Lamar Anders and one sister, Yonna Orr.

Mr. Anders worked for Pacific Power & Light for 35 years before retiring in 1982. He served in the Navy during WW II. He was a member of the Medford Masonic Lodge No. 103 AF & AM and was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy McCraw Anders; one son, James Mark Anders, Jr. and his wife Deanna of Marysville, WA; six daughters, Joan Lane Osborn of Hendersonville, Melissa Elizabeth Merrill of WA, Laura Kathryn Merrill of OR, Linda Merrill Patterson of OR, Debora Deas of Hendersonville, and Pamela Deas of Cincinnati, OH; along with four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at 11 a.m at Shepherd's Church Street Chapel with Rev. Phillip Cappell officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and at other times at the residence located at 32 Ridgestone Dr. Hendersonville, Masonic Rites will be conducted by Kedron Lodge No. 387 AF & AM.

Keith W. Garrett
Keith W. Garrett, 70, of Ashland, Oregon, passed away October 26, 2004 at Farmington Square. He was born February 24, 1934 in Summerton Arizona to Jim and Lela Garrett. Keith and his family moved to Oregon in 1948 where he attended Ashland Schools. He married Gerrie Lauridsen February 14, 1956.

He earned a B. S. Degree at Southern Oregon College in 1961. He earned a M.A. Degree in 1964 at Ohio State University. Keith retired form teaching at Ashland High School. He was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge, Ashland Masonic Lodges, and Hillah Temple Shrine.

Keith will be greatly missed by his loving family; his wife and three children, Kim Souza of Medford, Jody Williams of Medford, and Kurt Garrett of Carson City Nevada, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Pat Garrett.

A visitation will be held today, October 28 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 29 2004 at Litwiller-Simonsen Chapel. A memorial service will follow at the Ashland Elks Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Childrens Advocacy Center of Medford or the Ashland High School Scholarship Fund.

Earl Owen Moody
Earl Owen Moody, 71, of Phoenix died Thursday (Oct. 9, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A funeral service has been held. Mr. Moody was born Feb. 10, 1932 to Breece and Clemon (Alford) Moody in Blytheville, Arkansas. On Feb. 1, 1969, in Reno, NV he married Carol A. Edsall, who survives him. Moving from Sutherlin, he lived in the Rogue Valley since 1962.

He owned his own truck and was a long haul truck driver.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: two sons, Larry Rose and Gary Moody, both of Medford; six daughters, Paula Moody of Medford, Linda Durrer of Madera, CA, Diana Jacobsen of Central Point, Pauline Hession of Anaheim, CA, Linda Moody of Oklahoma, and Shari Hubbard of Washington; his sister, Louise Jackson of White City; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, Oct. 13th from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Memory Gardens Chapel in Medford.

Justin Lee Debo
Justin Lee Debo, 15, of Applegate, died Friday, (Oct. 10, 2003) as the result of an automobile accident.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2003 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 at Ruch Community Bible Church, 190 Upper Applegate Rd., Jacksonville, OR. Private interment will be at Missouri Flat cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Remembrances may be made to Asante Hospice, 500 SW Ramsey Ave., Grants Pass, OR 97527. He was born on Nov. 23, 1987 in Grants Pass. He attended Applegate School and was a 10th grade student at Hidden Valley High School.

He was a member of Awanas Church Group, attended Bible camp and was a member of Ruch Community Bible Church.

He enjoyed riding ATV's, especially in the sand dunes. He also enjoyed skateboarding, BMX, animals and being in the outdoors fishing and camping.

Survivors include his parents, David and Maureen Debo, his brother, Jacob Debo, and best friend, Zack Dunlap all of Applegate; and best friend Brittany Intiher of Grants Pass and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Lawrence Mulhall
Lawrence J. Mulhall, 95, husband of Marilyn Mulhall, died Monday (Oct. 13, 2003) at "Count Your Blessings, " Medford, from complications of Parkinson's. Arrangments: Conger-Morris, Medford & Brentwood Funeral Home, Brentwood, TN.

MarAbel B. Frohnmayer
Jan. 16, 1909 - Oct. 12, 2003

MarAbel B. Frohnmayer was born Jan. 16, 1909 in Minneapolis, MN. She was the daughter of Samuel N. Braden and Ethel Isabella Fisher Braden. Her family moved to Albany, OR in 1912, where Mr. Braden helped establish the Fisher-Braden Furniture and Funeral Home. She attended Albany public schools and graduated from Albany High School.

Mrs. Frohnmayer attended the University of Oregon, where she majored in music and minored in English literature. She received her BA degree in 1931. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and elected to the music honorary Mu Phi Epsilon. Mrs. Frohnmayer taught elementary and secondary education in the Valley School in Medford, and schools in McMinnville and Klamath County. On June 10, 1936 she married Medford attorney Otto J. Frohnmayer. Mr. Frohnmayer preceded her in death in 2000, at the age of 94.* The Frohnmayers had four children: Mira, Professor of Music and Chair/ Vocal Studies at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA, David, President of the University of Oregon, John, Montana attorney and former Chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, and Philip, Professor of Music and Chair of Vocal Studies, Loyola University, New Orleans, LA.

Family spokesperson Mira Frohnmayer said "Our mother gave all of us a deep value system, a love of family, and an enduring work ethic. She was the model for all of us in the use of the English language. She gave and re-gave of her passion for music to the community and the state." In addition to her focus on family, Mrs. Frohnmayer was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter AA of PEO, an international organization promoting education and philanthropy and the Contemporary Book Club, where she continued until last year preparing and giving reports. She was a founding member and President of the Rogue Valley Hospital Auxiliary and an early supporter of Hospice. She was a past member of the boards of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Peter Britt Music Festival, and the Rogue Valley Opera.

Her early and continuous involvement in her lifelong love of music is reflected in countless organizations for which she provided vision. She helped Frederick Palmer found the Rogue Valley Symphony. She was the first President of the Board of the Rogue Valley Chorale, directed by Lynn Sjolund. She created and directed musical groups such as the Mother Singers of the PTA and the Triple Trio. For many years she chaired efforts of the Civic Music Association, and later, Community Concerts.

MarAbel Frohnmayer received numerous awards for her civic and philanthropic activities. In 1985, she received the Bertha Holt Award of the Oregon Association of American Mothers for "significant achievement inraising a family and making outstanding contributions to community." She was Zonta Woman of the Year in 1986-87. In 1993. Mrs. Frohnmayer was selected Distinguished Alumna of the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, "for lifetime support and nuturing of the arts." In that same year, she received the University of Oregon Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the University's faculty.

In addition to their four children, Otto and MarAbel are survived by six grandchildren. Two granddaughters died of a rare disorder, Fanconi anemia.

At Mrs. Frohnmayer's specific request, there is to be no public memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, 1801 Willamette St., Suite 200, Eugene, OR 97401, the University of Oregon School of Music, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97401, or a health care charity of the donor's choice.

*Otto and MarAbel Frohnmayer were the subjects of an Oregonian feature, Ellen Heltzel, "First Family of Medford, " Oregonian Nov. 25, 1984 and an article by John Stearns, "Family and Philanthropy: The Otto Frohnmayer Philosophy, " Southern Oregon Heritage, Vol 1 No. 1 Page 10 (1995) (magazine of the Southern Oregon Historical Society.).
