Gladys Beddoe Ironside
Dr. Gladys Beddoe Ironside passed September 13, 2004 after a valiant battle with cancer. She forever will be remembered as a laughingly resolute woman of firsts. She was first in her class as valedictorian of Medford High School. One of the first female general surgery residents to be accepted by Loma Linda University. First female otolaryngologist in Oregon, a feat all more remarkable since, as a woman, she could not attend residency training at the University of Oregon. First with a solo ENT practice in Tualatin, which she renamed With a Woman's Touch upon qualifying, without residency, to become a facial plastic surgeon. First in the Portland metro area to introduce cosmetic laser technology, changing the practice name once more to Laser Aesthetics. First to actively market her expertise, considered heretical at the time. Undoubtedly, she was among the first physicians anywhere to obliterate the barrier between doctor and patients and employees, to include so many of them in her vast circle of friends, most from the first meeting forward. First, surely, to pedal mile after mile on a bicycle built for three. And first to say that her proudest moments and truest joy came from her family - husband, Dr. Keith Ironside; daughter, Valerie, and son-in-law, Jeremy Meyer; sister, Pam; brother, Sande; their spouses; and each niece and nephew. She waits for them.

The family would appreciate donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund in the name of Gladys Beddoe Ironside, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400, New York 10122; www.ocrf.org/donate2.shtml

Maxine Lorena Zimmerman was born in Southern Oregon on Dec. 14, 1927, to Orville and Eunice Zimmerman. She spent her early years happily working with her family on their family farm and with extended family and many dear friends throughout Southern Oregon orchards. A lifetime worth of good memories was made over this period. Perhaps most notably, it was during this period Maxine was courted by, and married to her husband of almost 60 years, George, who survives her today.

Maxine attended Central Point schools, graduating from Central Point High School. Maxine had an abiding interest and considerable gift in her caring for her yard and home. She prided herself in her "knowing how to put in a good days work." She was happiest when spending time with her husband George hunting or simply "exploring" the woods and various outlying mountain areas throughout Southern Oregon.

During more recent years Maxine and George really enjoyed being able to load up and "snowbird" south for the winter for several months each year, exploring back roads and other areas in Arizona.

Maxine's family wishes to thank all the friends who have "checked-in" on her over recent months as Maxine bravely struggled through her final battle with cancer. Those who care to remember Maxine with gifts are asked to consider sending contributions in her honor to the Southern Oregon Cancer Society.

Steve Volane Pappas
Beloved father, Steve Volane Pappas (Stefanos Iouannou) passed away at his home on Thursday, October 21, 2004.

Steve was a gentle, caring, and intelligent man, who was deeply thoughtful about socio-economic, political and cultural issues. He had a passion for art, music, and literature that was evident in his many professional and personal pursuits.

Steve was born July 20, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Mike and Ellie Pappas, immigrants from Greece. When Steve was very young his family relocated to Southern California. As a boy he traveled with his family to Greece, where he developed a deep appreciation and love for his Greek relatives and heritage. In his teens, Steve joined a post World War II forest conservation corp traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest, developing an enjoyment for the outdoors and his earliest understanding of environmental issues.

As a young man, Steve played competitive tennis, and earned a black belt in Judo. From 1951-1952, he served his country in the Counter Intelligence Corps stationed in Korea, and served in the Army Reserve until 1956. He attended both UCLA and USC completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture.

In 1956 Steve married Connie Baglione. Steve and Connie had two children, Teri and Stephanie. After 13 years of marriage, Steve and Connie divorced, but maintained a life long friendship that lasted until his death. In 1975 Steve married Jaci DeFord and they shared many happy years together.

Steve was an Architect with Victor Gruen & Associates, and later became a partner in the firm Honnold, Reibsamen, Rex, & Pappas in Los Angeles. His architectural career focused on city planning and mixed-use urban development projects. Steve was among the first to create a vision for the modern shopping center. His vast portfolio of projects includes ZCMI Center in Salt Lake City, Midtown Plaza in Rochester NY, the Mayo Center in Rochester Minnesota, Fox Plaza in San Francisco, Doheny Towers, Rossmore and Wilshire Comstock Apartments, Topanga Plaza, and the Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles, Reforma Project in Mexico City, El Jardine race track in Puerto Rico, and over a dozen Bank of America buildings.
