Thomas Benton Smothers
Thomas Benton Smothers, 73, of Rogue River, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 2004) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center.

A wake will be held from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 at the Smothers Residence, "The Doghouse". Southern Oregon Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in his name to the Marine Corp League, Rogue Valley Detachment, c/o John A. Wood, Commandant, 442 Honeylynn Lane, Grants Pass, OR 97527; or the Evans Valley Fire District No. 6 Aux., c/o Patricia Ott, 11450 E. Evans, Creek Rd., Rogue River, OR 97537 or to the charity of your choice.

Mr. Smothers was born on Sept. 22, 1931 in Royalton, IL. On February 11, 1952 in Piggott, Arkansas he married Mary Louise Rogers, who survives.

He retired as a gunnery sergeant in 1975 after serving for 23 years in the U.S. Marine Corp. He later worked as a physician's assistant and retired in 1993. He and his wife moved to Rogue River nine years ago from Kent, Washington.

Mr. Smothers volunteered in the fire department in Kent, Washington and currently was on the Evans Valley Fire District No. 6 Auxiliary. He was a member of the Marine Corp League, Rogue Valley Detachment.

He was an avid woodworker. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and all outdoor activities.

In addition to his wife, Mary L. Smothers of Rogue River, survivors include his three sons, Thomas B. Smothers of Portland, David L. Smothers of Port Orchard, Washington and Mark R. Smothers, Sams Valley; his daughter, Suzanne Guzman of Buena Park, CA; his brother, William E. Smothers of Peoria, IL; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arthur Bernard Drescher
Arthur Bernard Drescher, 93, of Medford, died Saturday (Oct. 23, 2004) at Rogue Valley Manor Health Care. Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Gary Lashomb
Gary Lashomb, 57, of Phoenix, died Sunday (Oct. 24, 2004) at his home. At his request no services will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center, Hospice Foundation, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR, 97504.

James A. Linkogle
James A. Linkogle, 71, of Ashland, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 at Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Walter L. Sewell
Walter L. Sewell, 91 (July 13, 1913) formally of Medford, died Wednesday (Oct 20, 2004) at Curry General Hospital, Gold Beach. Arrangements by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Brenda Ann Jordan
Brenda Ann Jordan passed away peacefully at her home on October 6, 2004.

She was born in Gardenia, CA and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1966.

Mrs. Jordan worked as a wonderful CNA; doing in-home private care for over 20 years. Her pride and joy were her 2 grandchildren. Brittany Kurz, 13, of Medford and Walter Kurz, 8, of Medford. She enjoyed her animals, music, yard-saling, swimming and camping, and watching her favorite day time show "Days of Our Lives".

Survivors include her mother Bonnie A. McGehee; a brother Sam L. McGehee; 2 daughters Rebecca L. Kurz of Medford, Melissa M. Perdue of Medford; step son Brian K. Jordan of Orville, CA. Preceding her in her death were her father Samuel L. McGehee and her sister Sandi L. Chapman.

She was dearly loved and will be forever in our hearts.

A private service will be held for family & friends.

Claude Charles Courian
July 15, 1919 - Oct. 1, 2004

Claude Courian, 85, of Medford died on Friday, October 1, 2004 after a long illness. A memorial Mass was held at Sacred Heart Church on October 7.

Mr. Courian was born in Toronto, Canada, and grew up in New York City and New Jersey. He served in the Army in World War II and settled in southern California in 1946. He married Ethelmay 'Boots' Hoffman in 1949.

His entire career was spent as a loan officer and branch manager for Bank of America. He retired in 1983 and lived for many years in the Del Mar and Solana Beach, Calif., area.

He is survived by his wife, Boots; and children, Christi Courian and Kathleen Sanchez of Medford, Curt Courian of Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand, and Ken Courian of San Diego, Calif.; his four grandsons are Michael, Robert, and John Courian, and Bird Sanchez.

Douglas William Crandall
Douglas William Crandall passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2004 at his residence.

Family and friends will gather at the graveside at 1:00 on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park for a moment of respect.

Mr. Crandall was survived by his children Erica, Dylan and Bryan; his sister Sandra Crandall of Portland, OR; his brother Roger Crandall of Central Point, OR; and by his half-brother Tim Feasil of McMinnville, OR. preceded in death by his sister, Jilda Crandall.

Emilie Dempsey
Emilie Dempsey died October 6, 2004. Emilie will miss her loving family, her children and grandchildren, Rebecca, Jacob, Diana, Jonathan, Colin, Jackson, Christina, Emilie, and Jack. They were her pride and joy. She will also miss her friends and all she leaves behind. But, she will be joyfully reunited with her husband Jack and her older son Taylor. Services will be held October 18, 2004 at 11:00 o'clock in the AM at The First United Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Esperanza 'Hope' Robley
Former Grants Pass resident Esperanza "Hope" Robley, 88, of Hillsboro, OR, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004 at a hospice facility in Hillsboro.

A funeral service was held Saturday, October 2, at Springer and Son Funeral Home in Hiilsboro.

Hope was born in Warren, Arizona, December 10, 1915. She lived in Los Angeles, California in the 1940s. In 1943, she met Fred Robley, then on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, in Los Angeles, where she worked as a hairdresser. They married in 1947 and lived in California before moving to Grants Pass in 1964.

She was a homemaker.

Hope is survived by her husband Fred of Hillsboro, OR; their son, Tim Robley of Scottsdale, AZ; and their daughters, Pat Eliison of Grants Pass, Julie McCann of Glen Cove, NY, Linda Dietrich of Bend, OR, and Mary Eaton of Hillsboro, OR; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

James H. McLeod
James H. McLeod passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at his home in Medford.

Jim was a strong and passionate man whose life was filled with family, lifelong friends, world travel and service to his country.

The only child of James and Mae McLeod, Jim was born and raised in beautiful Montclair, New Jersey. Jim was a loyal and caring friend as evidenced by his friendships with many of his childhood friends throughout his life.

After graduation from Immaculate Conception High School, Jim attended Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. It was at college that Jim met and fell in love with his future wife, Diane. Shortly before graduating college Jim proposed to Diane, but the wedding had to wait until after Jim served his country in the Army as a member of Headquarter Company, 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry Division in Korea. Within weeks of returning home, Jim and Diane married in Wildwood, New Jersey. Married life agreed with Jim and soon turned to family life with 4 children. A few years later, a new job opportunity with Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. took the family to Hanover, Massachusetts and then later across the U.S. to Northern California where they lived for over 20 years. While raising his family, Jim an avid stamp collector since boyhood, attended many stamp shows and became the Vice President of the Southern Oregon Philatelic Society. A devout Catholic, Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus in California and Oregon.

After 35 years at Fireman's Fund, Jim retired in 2000 and moved to Medford, Oregon where he enjoyed fly fishing, taking long walks with Diane and watching the sun set over the mountains from his Oregon home.

Jim is survived by his wife, Diane and their four children, James, Stephanie, Thomas and Christopher; and seven grandchildren, Colin, Madison, Jacob, Spencer, Kenzie, Molly and Casey.

A funeral mass will be held, at 12 noon Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at Shepard of the Valley Catholic Church, 600 Beebe Road, Central Point. Burial services will follow at Eagle Point National cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. Friends of Jim and Diane are welcome to join the family afterwards at a gathering at their home.

Jerry Mattern
Jerry Mattern, 67, of Central Point, died Friday (Oct. 8, 2004) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A memorial service will be held in Havre, MT.

Jerry was born on July 29, 1937 in Rugby, ND. On Oct. 10, 1956 he married Gloria Randall, who survives.

He worked for Naumes Equipment.

Jerry enjoyed flying model airplanes and spending time with his family and friends.

He will be missed.

In addition to his wife, Gloria, survivors include; two daughters, Sharyl Shakal, and Tammy Fraiser; a son Brian; and seven beloved grandchildren.

Judy (Serpa) Cooper
Judy (Serpa) Cooper - passed away peacefully in Eagle Point, Oregon on October 4, 2004 after a courageous battle against cancer.

She was born in Sacramento, California on November 26, 1946.

Judy is survived by Susan Serpa, (sister), Ed (husband), and numerous loving relatives and friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Albert and Mary Jane (Silva) Serpa.

She was an avid reader and horse lover.

Judy worked for the State of California for many years before moving to Oregon where she worked for Harry and David in Medford.

On October 17, 2004 (Sunday), two memorial services will be held to celebrate Judy's life, one in Sacramento at her parent's house (2260 Murieta Way), beginning at 1:30 p.m., and, a potluck to be held at Lake Creek Pioneer Hall, Lake Creek, OR from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are encouraged to attend either service.

Remembrances in her name can be sent either to the Mercy Foundation, Robert Garlick Science Library, 3400 Data Drive, Rancho Cordova CA 95670-9775 or to the Southern Oregon Humane Society.

William Alan Chisholm, Jr.
William Alan Chisholm, Jr., 45, of Phoenix, died October 5, 2004 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 700 N. Main, Ashland, officiated by Michael Rachel.

He was born on December 14, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated Ashland High School in 1977.

William worked as a landscaper. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, camping, and working outside.

He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include his daughter Whitney Alaina Chisholm; sister, Myra Elizabeth Mayer; brothers, Kevin Douglas Chisholm, Merrick Lewis Chisholm; and mother Matilda Margaret (Joseph) Chisholm. He was preceded in death by his father William Alan Chisholm, Sr.

William L. Scarlett
William L. Scarlett, 88, passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2004 in Hermiston, Oregon surrounded by family.

He was born in Orangeville, Indiana on June 10, 1916, he moved to Irrigon, Oregon in 1930 with his parents Asa & Fannie Lois Scarlett, and older brother George. Bill married Mary Charlotte Ralph from Hermiston, Oregon in 1941. Bill was a surveyor in AK, owned anauto parts store, a rotavating business, and worked at Boise in Medford. Bill & Charlotte moved to Medford, Oregon where they lived for over 50 years and raised their family.

Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends and sharing good times with his friend Mervyn Evans.

Bill is survived by daughters, Pamela Scarlett Twitchell of Fairbanks, Alaska, Patricia Scarlett Phillips of Puyallup, WA, Teresa Scarlett-Wells of Medford; William L. Scarlett Jr. of Soldotna, Alaska; daughter, Laurie Hardin Kime of Medford, OR. Also, he is survived by sister-in-law Helen Atwood of Medford, and numerous grandchildren great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte in Oct. 2002 and older brothers Miller & George.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vange John Memorial Hospice, Rose Arbor Assisted Living facility, or a charity for Alzheimer's or to the American Cancer Society.

Graveside Service has been held at the Hermiston cemetery.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in care of arrangements.

Ruth Carrie Pedley
Ruth Carrie Pedley, 85, of Medford died October 8, 2004 at Three Fountains Care Center. Arrangements are with Perl Funeral Home.

Beulah Augusta Dollarhide
Beulah Augusta Dollarhide, 91, of Medford died Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at Royale Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 20, at the Medford First Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Lance Lovlin officiating. Perl Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Beulah was born January 19, 1913 in Midvale, Idaho to Sanford and Elmira Sallee. She attended schools in Payette and Weiser, Idaho and one year at Northwest Bible College in Kirkland, WA. She worked for 13 years as a fashion department. manager with CC Anderson & Company and two years as the manager of the Montgomery Ward catalogue department store in Payette.

She married John Albert Dollarhide on October 26, 1954 in Payette, Idaho. They moved to Medford in 1955 where they managed the Medford branch of Greater Oregon Health Services until his death in 1975.

She was an active member of the Assembly of God church her entire adult life and her greatest joy was reading her Bible.

She is survived by sister-in-laws Josephine Hull and Joyce White of Grants Pass and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert.
