Alma J. Bilben
Sept. Senior if the Month Elixir of Life Alma J. Bilben has lived a long and full life. How long? Born on Sept. 15, 1901. Alma celebrated her 103rd birthday this month. Of course, many people may be surprised to hear that Alma is already 103, not only does she look much younger, but she also has always passed as younger than her actual age. In fact, she even used to tell people that she was 10 years younger than her actual age. She lied because she was, in truth, ten years older than her husband, and back in those days, the women were not supposed to be older than their husbands. So, she lied about her age until her husband's death in 1957. But now that she is over 100, she is proud of her age. She will be with you only 3 minutes before she informs you of her great age.

So, how is it that Alma had such a long life? Well, her favorite saying is, "Every time God comes looking for me, I'm in the bathroom." In actuality, she probably partly owes her long life to her good temperance. For example she would have a drink every now and then. She also smoked, but she could take a cigarette, now and then, and not have another one for a month. She wasn't afraid to have a little bit of junk food every now and again. In fact, recently some local nurses dropped in on Alma and found she had been on a diet of potato chips and chocolate chip cookies. When the nurses told Alma's son that she must eat more healthful foods, he explained to them that his mother has succeeded making it this far on such a diet, why change her ways now? Who knows, perhaps potato chips and chocolate chips are actually the elixir of life.

Alma was born in a small town outside of Decatur, Illinois. After high school she moved to Chicago where she went to a business school. Then she worked for a law firm doing secretarial work. In Chicago, she met and married her husband John. Then moved with him to his hometown of Walker, Minnesota. There, John worked for his father at a general store until he opened up his own fishing charter.

During the depression, very notable clients, such as Laurel and Hardy and Arthur Davidson (of Harley-Davidson), used John's charter service. They would fish all day; and then take a break and eat pies that Alma had baked for them the night before.

Alma has always been very independent. When John died at the young age of 47, Alma moved to Medford, Oregon where she was in charge of a company called Newcomer's Service. She had four girls working for her who would welcome new residents to Medford by introducing them to different businesses and services in the area. Alma did not retire from the business until she was 86.

And how is it that Alma still looks so young? Well, in her youth, Alma had flaming red hair and a very clear complexion, so she had to stay out of the sun. This lack of sun is probably what has kept her looking as young as she still does today. So, perhaps Alma's formula for long life is: temperance, independence, late retirement, no sun, and a bit of junk food here and there.
