David Lawrence Hunt
On Dec. 23, 2004 David L. Hunt died in his sleep. He loved his family, the pursuit of treasure and the beauty of the outdoors.

David loved a treasure story and often led his wife Diana and their two sons, David and Daniel, to many wonderful and magical places. He worked hard as a carpenter, building a 'fort' in the backyard and a retaining wall in the front, adding to the beauty and fun of their home in Gold Hill. As a professional map dowser he explored not only his dreams of treasure but helped others discover theirs as well.

In addition to his wife and children, David is survived by his mother, Marjorie Axelson, of Palm Springs, CA; brother, Bruce Allen Hunt, of Adrian, MI; sisters, Sally Marie Couch, of Grants Pass, OR and Sandy Kay Ozuna, of Palm Springs, CA; and his nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Medford, 85 S. Holly St., at 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004.

Gerald Harvey Schmelzer
A memorial service for Gerald Harvey Schmelzer will be at 11 a.m. Wed. Dec. 29, at the VA National cemetery, Eagle Point. A celebration of his life will follow at the Friends Church in Talent.

Mr. Schmelzer, 83, of Talent, died Thursday (Dec. 23, 2004) in Medford.

He was a WWII veteran and was proud to have served his country.

Janey Marian Carter
Janey Marian Carter, formerly of Ashland, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 at Hearthstone Manor in Medford. Private interment was in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. No services are planned.

She was born in Franklin, PA on December 14, 1909 to Frank and Hattie Walker. They moved to Ashland in 1911. On September 2, 1928 she married Marion Carter who passed away in 1965.

Mrs. Carter was a member of Lady Elks for many years and enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and watching soap operas.

She is survived by two sons, Frank of Medford and David of Yrcka, CA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one nephew and two nieces.

Patricia 'Patty' Jo Carnes
A memorial service for Patricia "Patty" Jo Carnes will be today Tuesday Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at Conger Morris Medford Chapel, 715 W. Main. Rev. Andy Green will officiate.

Mrs. Carnes, 50, of Medford, died Dec. 21, 2004 at her home.

She was born on Feb. 21, 1954 in Long Beach. CA to Joan Woodford and Melvin Douglas. She lived in the Rogue Valley for over 10 years. On May 5, 1999 in Puerto Villarta, Mexico she married Tom Carnes who survives.

Mrs. Carnes was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach. She worked as a sales associate and customer service associate. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge.

Mrs. Carnes loved to fish and go to Britt.

In addition to her husband, Tom, survivors include a son, Brandon Stokes of Corvallis, OR; her daughters, Kimberly Moore of Graham, WA, and Joelle Stokes of Medford; her mother, Joan Woodford of McMinnville, OR; sisters Joann McIntyre of Graham, WA; Laurie Leo of Yorva Linda, CA; her brothers Mike and Ted Douglas both of Long Beach; and Phil Douglas of Orange County, CA. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin L. Douglas.

Donald George Van Curler, 77, of Talent, died Saturday (December 25, 2004) at his residence. Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Kenneth A. Wilke
A memorial service for Kenneth A. Wilke will be at 11 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2004 at Perl Funeral Home, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford.

Mr. Wilke, 73, of Medford, died December 11, 2004 at his home.

He was born on December 16, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Alfred and Ruby Wilke. Kenneth attended the University of Illinois in Champaign. He worked for General Electric in manufacturing engineering. On May 17, 1952, he married Nancy Nelsen, who survives.

Kenneth enjoyed woodworking, photography, boating and fishing.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, survivors include his children Bob, Bruce, Bonnie Phillips and Paul; his sister Audrey Wroble; and nine grandchildren.

Russell Smith
Russell Smith, 85, of Medford, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Hearthstone Rehabilitation and Care Center.

Danny Dean Gairson
Danny Dean Gairson, 55, of Central Point, died December 26, 2004.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m., January 8, 2005 at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, Medford, OR. Hank Nuckton of Jehovah's Witnesses, Gold Hill will officiate. Viewing will be from 3 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2005 Memorial contributions may be made to ALS Support Group, in Care of Betty Johnson, 2319 Beall Lane, Central Point, OR 97502.

He was born on February 10, 1949 in Grants Pass. On March 20, 2004, he married Robin Martini in Central Point. He attended Crater High School and served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses of Gold Hill and Brothers of the Third Wheel.

Survivors include: wife, Robin Martini of Central Point; mother, Laura Gairson of Central Point; sons, Ryan and Jimmy of Medford; adopted daughter, Dee Fischer of Grants Pass; sister, Bonny Duda of Central Point; brother, Lonny Gairson of Central Point; six grandchildren; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford, OR.

Edna May Bryan
The memorial service scheduled for December 30, 2004 is being postponed until a later date.

Edna May Bryan, 74, of Medford, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Jarva Way
A memorial service for Jarva Way will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, 2585 East Hills Dr., Ashland.

Mrs. Way, 89, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 at her home. She was born October 18, 1915 in Oklahoma.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Way; two children, Donald A. Way, Jr. and Todd O. Way; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

LeRoy Dale Kaegi
1922-2004

LeRoy Dale Kaegi, 82, of Ashland, died Dec. 11, 2004 in Palm Springs, CA.

Mr. Kaegi was born on Jan. 19, 1922 in Camp Kerney, CA.

He was a highly decorated Air Force Pilot during WW II.

Mr. Kaegi owned and operated "The White House Grocery Store" in Ashland for many years.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Pamela G. Kaegi of Rancho Mirage, CA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Naomi Jean Kaego and his son, Robert Dale Kaegi.

Laurence Leon Barger
Laurence Leon Barger, 80, of Ashland, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Robert W. Evens
The memorial service for Robert W. Evens will be held Saturday, January 8, 2005 at 11 a.m., at Ashland First Baptist Church.

Mr. Evens, 90, of Ashland, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Mr. Evens was born to Merle and Leslie Evens in Waldport, OR on August 28, 1914. In 1917 he moved with his family to Portland, OR where he lived until he finished high school in 1934. He moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1936. In 1942 he entered the military and was stationed with the Army Air Corps in England for the duration. In February of 1945 he married the former Irene A. Fleming, an English girl. She preceded him in death in 1989 in Roseburg, OR.

Shortly after World War II he entered college and in three years received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He remained in the aircraft industry as an engineer until retirement in 1974, at which time returned to Oregon and settled in Glendale.

Following the death of his first wife, he met an old friend from his high school days, Edla E. Peterson, and after a brief courtship they were married in Ashland on April 11, 1990. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1997.

Survivors include his son, Clyde Rodney Evens of Roseburg, OR; grand-daughter, Zara Yasmin Yarbrough Evens of Vancouver, B.C.; and two nieces, Patty Lowe and Sherry Evens.
