A. Dean von Stein
A. Dean von Stein was born November 14, 1927 in Bedford, Indiana. He passed away December 9, 2004, at his home in Shady Cove, Oregon. Memorial Services will be held Monday, December 27, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at Eagle Point Nazarene Church.

Dean came to the Rogue Valley as a young child and made his home here all of his life. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948.

He worked in the lumber industry and for many years was employed by Double D. Lumber Company.

Dean loved the outdoors and often hiked into high mountain lakes. He was well acquainted with the mountain trails and spent much time hunting and enjoying nature.

He enjoyed music and for years was involved in the music program at Church of the Nazarene. He sang in the Fishermen Male Quartet.

He is survived by one son, Gary and Rebecca von Stein of Eugene; two daughters, Sharon and Dean Hartenstein of Oregon City, Karen and Dennis Harbour of Springfield; one sister, Audrey Muirhead of Ahivahnee, Californias; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Anthony Ray Martin
Anthony Ray "Tony" Martin died on November 26, 2004, at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, following a long illness.

Tony was born June 28, 1942, in Oakland, CA to Anthony "Ray" and Elizabeth Martin, deceased.

His survivors include wife Jan and son Anthony, of Jacksonville; sister Sharon Christensen of San Francisco; and nephews Michael and Eric Christensen of Santa Clara, CA and Frisco, TX, respectively.

As a young man, Tony was a member of Troop 241 in Pleasant Hill, CA, and became an Eagle Scout at age 15. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and the Oregon National Guard. He made Southern Oregon his home in the early 1960's, where he attended Southern Oregon College, worked as a guide on the Rogue River, a construction worker, and in the restaurant business.

Tony was a member of Laborer's Union Local 1400, and worked on several local projects around the Rogue Valley, including Lost Creek Dam, Applegate Dam, and the refurbishment of the Peter Britt Gardens. He was owner/operator of Tony's Bar and Grill in Ashland. He loved hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Tony's friends were very important to him, and staying current on his friendships was one of the hallmarks of his life. His childhood friend, Bud Van Buren, commented that Tony is now "soaring with the Eagles", a statement Tony used to make after attaining his Eagle Scout status.

Tony was known for his sense of humor, and his quick wit was loved by all. Harmless practical jokes were his hobby, and led to many opportunities for good story-telling and laughs. He was genuinely loved, and will be sincerely missed by his family and friends.

There will be a celebration of Tony's life at his home in Jacksonville on January 15, 2005. Memorial contributions can be made in Tony's name to organizations dealing with the welfare of children, the fight against obesity, or to a favorite charity.

James Kingsley Sours
Jim died at his Medford home, December 4, 2004, at age 79. Best known for his tenure as President of Southern Oregon State College during the 1970's, Jim lived a life rich in experiences of the Great Depression, World War II, academia, community service, and of course, family. It was a life worthy of reflection.

What is the connection between the boy who joined his pastor father on the church steps Sunday mornings to greet congregation members and the young man who, years later, greeted open house guests as they arrived at the President's home in Ashland? Did his daily, pre-dawn paper route match the many pre-dawn hours spent preparing his PhD thesis? Without his heavy participation in the Enid, OK junior high and high school band programs, would he have grown to love classical music and support Jefferson Public Radio? Is it possible his compassion for those less fortunate was inspired by his younger sister who, born with cerebral palsy, learned not only to stand, walk and eat, but also attended college and has become a model for all who know her? Or, what about the rich friendship, lasting over 30 years, with a young man who sold Jim his first car? The old Hudson was never worth more than Jim owed on it, but it didn't matter, because the friendship was the important thing.

How much influence on Jim's later academic achievements was a high school teacher's answer to his question, "Why do I get a C when my exam grade was the highest in the class?" The teacher said, "For you, it is a flunk. I expect you to be working harder and reaching far beyond this point!" Jim's lifetime of experiences became his toolbox for building into the future. He was a forward-looking man, anxious to make things better than they were. He is survived by his sister Mary of Orlando, Florida, his wife Alice and his three children: Jim of New Mexico, Jan of Jacksonville, David of Medford, and three grandchildren.

The University will celebrate his life February 7, 2005, with the dedication of a new student leadership center to be constructed above the Redford Lounge in the Stevenson Union. Those who would like to honor Jim may send contributions to the Southern Oregon University Foundation for this purpose.

Joseph David Haddad
Joseph David Haddad, 93, of Talent, Oregon, died at home with his family by his side on November 25, 2004. Services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on December 2, 2004 with Pastor John Braund officiating.

Joseph was born in a small village near Sidon Lebanon on May 7, 1911. He and his mother passed through Ellis Island fourteen years later to join his father who had come to this country eight years prior in search of a better life. The family settled in Cedar Rapids, IA, where eventually Joseph's family grew in size. Joseph attended the University of Iowa, participating in football and wrestling. While in Iowa, he met and married his first wife, Esther with whom he had a son, Richard Joseph who resides in Arlington, TX.

Like his father before him, Joseph and his new family left Cedar Rapids for Long Beach, CA in search of opportunity. Joseph began to master his skill in tool and dye at Vaultee Inc., in Burbank, CA. The closing of the company led to a chance meeting that would have a profound impact on his life, that of meeting Mr. Jack Northrop of Northrop Aircraft Corporation. He began working in the field of aviation in the early 1940's. Joseph, as Pastor John Braund so eloquently stated, was a man of vision. He looked to the future with optimism and enthusiasm. It was while working at Northrop that Joseph met and married his second wife, Bette, with whom he had two daughters, Joanne Michelle Haddad and Susan Marie Haddad, both residing in Talent.

Joseph was in his time a scratch golfer. He played for the "A" flight at Northrop and at one time beat professional golfer, Ed. Furgol. Joseph was also an avid handball, tennis player and weightlifter. In many ways he was way ahead of his time in the area of fitness and nutrition. His mother and father, Sadie and David of Cedar Rapids, IA, sister Rebecca Sampica, of Cedar Rapids, IA, and brother Dr. Benjamin F. Haddad M.D., of Gross Pointe Farms, MI, precede him in death.

In addition to his wife Bette, surviving family includes his son Richard J. Haddad of Arlington, TX; daughters Joanne M. Haddad and Susan M. Haddad of Talent, OR; and brother William B. Haddad of Los Angeles, CA.

His family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to RVMC Home Health and Hospice and to the staff at Interim Health Care for their kindness and support during Joseph's last days. Joseph was much loved and will be greatly missed.
