Ransy Earl Minton
A graveside service for Ransy Earl Minton will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan., 12, 2005 at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Minton, of Medford, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 in Medford.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1921, in LaMesa Texas.

Ransy served in the Army during WWII in the European Theatre and he was awarded the purple heart. In 1965 he married Evelyn McGee who preceded him in death.

He retired from employment from the Rogue Valley Country Club.

He was a member of the VFW, and was a accomplished gardener.

Survivors include a loving step-daughter, Kathleen Troy, her husband Tom and their children, Laura and Richard.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Ruth E. Pinkham
The funeral service for Ruth Eileen Rikard Pinkham will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Central Point with Pastor Damon McCoy officiating. Interment will be at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mrs. Pinkham, 76, of Central Point, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Providence Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born on Sept. 16, 1928 in St. Louis, MO. On Aug. 31, 1948 in Reno, NV she married Berkley August Pinkham, who survives. She had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1947, moving here from Plant City, FL. Mrs. Pinkham was a homemaker.

Survivors in addition to her husband include three sons, Berkley Joe of Kettle Falls, WA, Jeffrey Dale of Odessa, FL. Anthony Paul of Kettle Falls; three daughters, Elizabeth Eileen Gotcher of Central Point, Lori Ann Davis and Lana Maria Bilyea both of Medford; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Arrangements by: Conger-Morris, Central Point Chapel.

Vera F. Igo
Vera F. Igo passed away peacefully on January 5th, 2005 at the age of 75.

Vera was born March 24, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri. She moved to Medford where she attended area schools and then studied music at Willamette University.

In 1948 she married Richard Igo and lived in various national park areas throughout the nation, retiring to the Brookings-Harbor area in 1979, and then to full time traveling in their RV since 1999.

She was an accomplished musician, serving as church organist, choir director, and music teacher in several locations.

She is survived by her husband Richard; and two sons, Mark (Marlene) of Grand Coulee, WA and Neil (Julie) of Duluth, MN; and three grandchildren.

Following cremation, a family graveside service is planned in the spring.

Vivian J. Curtis, 80, died Jan. 7, 2005, in Medford. Cremation is under the direction of Perl Funeral Home and Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

William X. Ross, Jr.
William X. Ross, Jr., 80, of Medford, died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at his home. Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

Barbara E. Trojan
The funeral for Barbara Eugenia Trojan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Private interment will be at Mountain View cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Trojan, 89, of Ashland, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Ashland Community Hospital. She was born May 28, 1915 at Perth Amboy, New Jersey the daughter of Helena and Thadeus Obremski and was raised in Bayonne, New Jersey. On September 13, 1936 at Bayonne she married Joseph F. Trojan, who preceded her in death.

Barbara lived in Tarzana, CA from 1970 to 1988 when she moved to Ashland.

Surviving are: two daughters, Dr. Lorraine Gibb of Columbus, Ohio and Dannielle Edwards of Ashland. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and a son, Robert Trojan.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Gayle Swanson Howell
Gayle Swanson Howell, 49, of La Quinta, California, was killed on January 6, 2005, in a one-car accident in Arizona.

Gayle was born October 29, 1955, to Art and Jean Swanson of Medford. She attended public school in Medford and graduated with the class of 1973. On August 14, 1976, she married Gerald (Jerry) Howell in Medford.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry of La Quinta, CA; sons, Dain Arthur Swanson Howell, 25, and Cameron Lee Swanson Howell, 23, both of Phoenix, AZ; and sisters, Glenda Kaiser of Eagle Point and Gloria Thompson of Medford.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Perl Funeral Home in Medford; gathering at 12 and Ceremony at 1 p.m.

Hellen Evanson McFadden
Medford and Rogue Valley native Hellen Evanson McFadden died January 4, 2005 at a care facility in Gresham Oregon.

Born to Agnes von der Hellen Evanson and Edward Evanson, on October 30, 1917, Hellen was the middle child of the family. Her older sister, Betty E. Fellerson, Orland CA., preceded her in death, and her surviving younger brother Edward C. Evanson lives in Gold Hill with his wife Doris.

Hellen graduated from Medford High School and attended Business College in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a young woman. After returning to Medford, Hellen worked at COPCO (now Pacific Power) and will be remembered by many in the community for her work at the Medford Selective Service Draft Board during WWII.

Hellen married Thomas W. McFadden and raised three children, Judith Galloway, Hood River, David McFadden, Medford, and Elizabeth (Libby) Darnall, Gresham. Hellen had 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

During her marriage, she was the accountant for T.W. McFadden Logging Company. She was active in community affairs, helping with such activities as raising money for Rogue Valley Hospital and other charities, and was a charter member of the Philharmonic Society. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, piloting airplanes, riding Harleys, Rogue Valley Country Club Lady Golfers activities, Girl Scouts of America, Community Concert Association, and was a crack shot with a rifle.

After she was 50 years old, Hellen returned to school while continuing to raise her children and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, and a Masters Degree, with a Nursing emphasis, all from what is now Southern Oregon University. She became a Certified Diabetic Educator through the National Certification Board for Diabetic Educators. Hellen wrote several articles that were published in the American Journal of Nursing concerning nursing and the treatment of diabetes, and volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Senior Health Outreach Association.

During and after receiving her Nursing Degrees, Hellen worked at Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse and was President of the Southern Oregon Chapter of the Oregon Nurses Association. She worked as a supervisory nurse for16 years at the VA Domiciliary in White City before she retired at 72. She worked on committees of the Health Planning Council concerned with developing a community clinic system in southern Oregon. After her divorce and while working at the VA, Hellen moved to Eagle Point where she became active in the community on issues concerning wetlands, emergency service development, and city growth.

Hellen loved music and learning. She played piano very well. She attended concerts and plays held by the Community Concert Association, the Britt Festival, the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, the Rogue Valley Chorale and St. Mark's Parish. She was also active in the Historical Society, Genealogy Society and both the Medford and Eagle Point libraries.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Southern Oregon University Foundation (SOUF)--Hellen McFadden Memorial Fund, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, Oregon, 97520 for the support of nursing students at Southern Oregon University.

A memorial service and reception will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Fifth and Oakdale Ave., Medford, Oregon at 1:00 pm January 15, 2005.

William L. 'Billy' Oden
William L. "Billy" Oden, 78, of Medford, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at his home. Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

William R. Gomberg
William R. Gomberg, 67, of Brookings, died January 8, 2005 at home. Arrangements under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Geoffrey Lewis
Noted artist Geoffrey Lewis, at age 77, died peacefully on Saturday, January 8, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was born to Elsie and Robert Lewis in San Francisco on January 3, 1928. He attended San Francisco schools until he enlisted in the Merchant Marines at age 16, becoming the youngest man in the World War II invasion of Saipan.

Following a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany, on the G.I. Bill he attended San Francisco Academy of Art and Chicago Art Institute, receiving a scholarship to the prestigious New York Art Students League. He joined BBDO Advertising in New York as a television art director and subsequently worked in their Los Angeles and San Francisco offices.

Continuing his fine art studies he left advertising to paint full-time in 1964. He exhibited at Maxwell, Pomeroy and Conacher Galleries in San Francisco, The Biltmore in Los Angeles, Zantman in Carmel and galleries in Dallas & Corpus Christi, Texas and Memphis, Tennessee. A retrospective of his work was presented by the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. In 1971, he moved to Ashland, Oregon where he continued to paint for the rest of his life.

He was made an Honorary Member of the Ashland Fire Department after leading the drive to raise funds for the first rescue vehicle in Ashland. He was on the founding Board of Directors of the State Ballet, served on the Briscoe Parent Committee and participated in Meals on Wheels. A supporter of local community and Children's Theater productions, he acted and produced for Medford Community Theater and was a founder of the Oregon Theater Wing in the Rogue Valley.

An avid and skilled bridge player, in 1998, he was named a Silver Life Master by the American Contract Bridge League. He is survived by sons, Christopher, New York; Prescott, Ashland; Courtney, Santa Rosa, CA; daughter, Paulette, son-in-law Michael, grandchildren, Austen and Ali Butler of Hailey, Idaho; and brother Wallace of San Anselmo, CA. One son, Cooper, preceded him in death.

Services will be held Friday, January 14, 9 a.m. at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Additional service and interment will follow at the Veterans National cemetery in Eagle Point at 11 a.m. Tax-deductible Contributions should be made to the Ashland Parks Foundation, 340 S. Pioneer Street, Ashland, Oregon, in memorial to Geoffrey Lewis.

Gladys Grace Chesnut
A funeral for Gladys Grace Chesnut will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford. Pastor Darold Hutsell will officiate. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Conger Morris in Medford.

Mrs. Chesnut, 85, of Phoenix, OR died Monday (Jan. 10, 2005) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1919 in Iona Township, MN to Leonel C. and Grace (Renn) Rusho. She lived in the Rogue Valley most of her life. On Feb. 24, 1941 in Talent, she married Leonard Chesnut who survives.

Mrs. Chesnut was a homemaker.

She enjoyed ceramics and embroidery. She was a member of the Phoenix Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband, Leonard, survivors include two sons, Robert and Kenneth Chesnut both of Phoenix, OR; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Von Chesnut, and one brother.
