Allen Lloyd Sawyers
Allen Lloyd Sawyers of Grants Pass passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 6, 1944 in Willits. California to Lloyd and Mary C. Sawyers. He grew up in Laytonville, California and spent much of his time at work in the woods with his beloved father who was a timber faller. At the age of 17 he moved to Blue Lake, California and lived with his sister Joy Winkle and her husband Charlie.

On June 5, 1964 he married Peggy Laumeyer in Blue Lake. They had two daughters, Kimberly and Shelly. They moved to Grants Pass in 1972. Allen and Peggy divorced after 22 years of marriage.

On October 11, 1996 he married Cheryl Clary in Reno, NV. She was very dedicated to caring for Allen throughout his illness.

Allen worked his entire life in the logging industry mainly as a timber faller. He believed that the true measure of a man was in his ability to work hard. He taught young men the meaning of working hard and taking pride in the job you do. He could be a tough person to work for but those who endured learned to understand and value the lessons taught to them. He formed some very long lasting relationships with these young men.

He had a passion for the mountains and couldn't understand those who didn't appreciate the deep bond that he had with the woods which is where he found peace and felt he belonged.

He was very proud of his daughters who did not escape the "lessons of life" in the woods either. They would camp with him on jobs during the summers and they learned as others had, to love and appreciate the life that was so important to him. He will be greatly missed by them.

Survivors other than his wife, Cheryl Clary, are daughter, Kimberly Dunbar and son-in-law Matthew Dunbar; granddaughter, Tera Dunbar; grandson, Jason Dunbar; great-grandson, Braydon Dunbar; daughter, Shelly Gutzman and son-in-law Paul Gutzman; granddaughter, Krystle Gutzman; grandson Paul Gutzman; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters, Leland, Lucille, Lorin, Stanley, Jean and Joy.

He will be laid to rest in the family cemetery. Services are scheduled March 26, at 2 p.m. at Little Lake cemetery in Willits, CA.

In lieu of donations the family would enjoy stories or photos from friends that will be made into a memory book to be distributed at his service. Send to: Shelly Gutzman, 4181 Highland Ave, Grants Pass, OR 97526 or e-mail dunbar@echoweb.net by March 18.

Those who knew this great man loved him. He will be missed!

Evan Burke
Fear no more the heat o'th' sun
Nor the furious winter's rages.
Thou thy worldly task hast done.
Home art gone and ta'en thy wages.
Golden lads and girls all must.
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.
(Cymbeline, William Shakespeare)

Evan Burke, 21, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, of injuries suffered in a skateboarding/ auto accident. Evan was a kind and generous person, and his last act was the gift of his life. His heart already beats in another body, and through the donation of his liver, eyes, bone marrow and tissue, he will continue to touch lives. A friend remarked, "They say that when a heart is transplanted, some of the personality is transferred. The person with Evan's heart will feel an occasional uncontrollable urge to take off his clothes and run around outside." Evan was born on January 3, 1984, in Daly City, California. When he was three, the Burke family moved to Ashland, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated in 2002 from Ashland High School's Wilderness Charter School, which transformed him from an angry, undirected boy into a loving, graceful, expressive man. He was an inspired artist (art was his major at Southern Oregon University) and an extraordinary cook. He loved the outdoors, hiking and making music with his friends. Walking down the street with Evan was a stop-and-start experience, as he paused every few feet to share a hug or have a conversation. He held no expectation about people, but allowed them to be who they were.

Evan will always be deeply loved, profoundly missed and joyfully celebrated by his parents, Jim and Lucille Burke, and his sister, Jocelyn, of Ashland; grandparents Roy and Gloria Burke of Long Beach, California, and Jim and Virginia Housel of Meadow Vista, California; uncle Richard Burke, Calgary, Alberta; aunt Katy Burke and cousin Isis, Paris, France; uncle Tom Housel and family, Pebble Beach, California; aunt Marian Watt and family, Rock Springs, Wyoming; and a large family of friends.

His parents greatly appreciate the love and support of the trauma surgeon and nurses at Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital.

A life celebration for Evan is scheduled for Sunday, March 13, at the Dorothy Stolp Theatre at Southern Oregon University. An informal gathering begins at 3:00, with a memorial at 4:30 and a potluck reception in the lobby before and afterwards. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to donate blood in Evan's name. Also a memorial fund in Evan's name has been set up at U.S. Bank in Ashland. Anyone wishing to contribute may call: 482-1522.

"If we marvel at the artist who has written a great book, we must marvel more at those people whose lives are works of art and who don't even know it, who wouldn't believe it if they were told. However hard work good writing may be, it is easier than good living." (Katherine Paterson)

Maj. Donal Patrick Daggitt, USAF Ret.
Mr. Daggitt was born on March 5, 1923, and passed away on March 7, 2005 after succumbing to smoking related illnesses which plagued him for many years. He was 82 years of age.

Donal was born to Donal Lachman and Elizabeth Keenan Daggitt in Spokane, Washington, youngest of two brothers. Donal graduated high school in Spokane. During his high school summers Donal spent time working for state and federal agencies on road building crews in Idaho and Montana, an area and he loved to which he would return many years later.

In 1941, after graduation from high school, Donal enrolled at the University of Illinois, school of engineering. While at the University he received a letter from his brother who was enrolled in an Aviation Cadet Program challenging Donal to become a pilot. Donal, always feeling that he could best his brother in most things, quit school and answered the challenged issued by his brother and joined the Air Corps in January 1942, although at the time he enlisted he had no interest in flying. He just wanted to prove to himself that if his brother could do it, so could he. Thus began a military career lasting the next 21 years.

While in the Air Corps, Donal was a fighter pilot during World War II based in China, flying the P-51 fighter. At the end of the war, Donal chose to stay in the service. He eventually came to be stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio where he met and married Patricia R. Doss. They had two sons and were married more than 58 years until Patricia succumbed to an aggressive and rare form of cancer on January 18, 2005.

Donal's career with the military had him assigned to many bases in the United States and abroad. In addition to piloting the P-51, he also flew the C-47 while stationed in Greece, and the RC-121 also known as the pregnant Connie, while stationed at Otis AFB on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

After his retirement Donal and the family moved across country and settled in Medford, Oregon. He returned to university and completed a degree in business administration with majors in accounting and mathematics. After graduation, Donal accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service until his retirement in 1976.

Donal became a member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary's High School in 1971 at a time when it was on the brink of closure. His help, along with that of many others who did not want to see the school close, was instrumental in the continued operation of St. Mary's. Donal was also a member of the Southern Oregon Warbirds Association composed of veterans who participated in wars of our country in a military aviation capacity. Donal was a participant in the organ donor program.

Because of time spent in the military Donal always had an urge to travel. He and his wife traveled extensively, not only to far destinations such as Morocco and Australia, but also to numerous locations in the United States, not just for sightseeing but also to visit relatives and many friends scattered throughout the country. Even while in the hospital, Donal expressed his desire to travel to the mountains again, or to see another fantastic sunset. Donal is now on another trip, but not alone, for he and Patricia are united and once again traveling. Bon voyage and Godspeed.

Survivors include his brother William E. Daggitt and his wife Evelyn of Centerville Ohio; their children and grandchildren; son Patrick Edward Daggitt of Medford, Oregon, his wife Kathy; son Russell Laurence Daggitt of Santa Rosa, California; and two grandchildren Christopher and Nicholas both of Medford, Oregon.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at the VA National cemetery in Eagle Point, where he and his wife will be buried together.
