Donald was born December 12, 1913 to George and Dorothea Neilson in Vancouver, Washington. While a boy, Don's family moved to Medford, where his father practiced law and served as Jackson County District Attorney.

Don's later teaching and school administrative career led him to several Oregon and northern California communities. After Donald earned his teaching certificate from Southern Oregon Normal School in 1928, he taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in the Rogue Valley. He continued his teaching career and completed a BS degree at Oregon State University in 1938. Donald then earned a masters degree from Oregon State University in 1951. He also attended Stanford University for two years of post graduate study. He served as head of the Yreka High School science department in Yreka, California, and then Donald moved to Hamilton City, California, where he became Superintendent of Hamilton Union High School in 1952. While at Hamilton Union High, Donald co-authored a book on the educational use of swimming pools for schools in 1954. His later career took him to Rogue River High School, in southern Oregon, where he was Principal, and to Yoncala, Oregon, before retiring.

At the end of WWII, Donald continued military service with the California and Oregon National Guards as a First Lieutenant, and finally retired from active duty in 1958 with the rank of Major.

Donald's marriage to Mary Vera Peart, July 10, 1940, produced a 63-year union before his wife's death in 2003.

The surviving family include: a daughter, Donna Ulrich of Loveland, Colorado; one son, John Neilson of Medford, Oregon; and four grandchildren, Bret Maidman of Phoenix, Arizona, Ian Maidman of New York, NY, and Sean Neilson and Kimberly Ramsay, both of Medford. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Loren Rush, of Medford; daughters, Nerine Shalita of Ashland, Pam Pierce of San Diego, CA, Leslie Gilkey of Reno, NV, and Lisa Sawin of Phoenix, AZ.

Born in Tucson, AZ, Bob moved to San Diego, CA in 1940. He graduated from Hoover High School in San Diego, CA in 1948, and then attended the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. He married Polly Lucille Risley in 1953 and had to row himself ashore to make his own wedding. He returned to San Diego to begin a career that spanned 22 years with Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Early in Bob's career, he was instrumental in the job to dredge out Mission Bay and form Fiesta Island. He also worked at UCSD's John Muir College when UCSD first began in SD. Later he worked on the Deep Sea Drilling Project, scheduling ports of call for the Glomar Challenger. This afforded him the opportunity to see the world and experience new cultures, and gave rise to innumerable stories of far away places. He left the academic system in the seventies and started a new career at Systems, Science and Software as a systems technician until retiring in 1993.

In 1993 he moved to the family property on the South Fork of the Little Butte Creek in Lake Creek, Oregon. He proudly described his new home as an 800 square foot woodworking shop with a detached two bedroom home. In addition to woodworking, he enjoyed river rafting and visitors. Bob also served his community with his active participation in the Watershed Council of Little Butte Creek. He was President of the Council for 3 years. He then went on to become the self-appointed outreach person and tour guide to all who were interested in seeing the area the Watershed Council covers, over 239, 000 acres.

The Hydro Plus project, a research program run through SOSU, had a special place in Bob's heart. He dedicated a permanent path to access the creek through his property so that this program could continue to run even after he passed. His memorial service will be linked to the annual Hydro Plus week at his property on July 16th. His cremation was handled by Conger-Morris in Central Point.

We will all miss Bob and his way of telling stories, loving others and serving with his heart first and fully.
